What a brilliant drive, absolutely masterclass. Refuelling was very interesting, especially in race like Monaco where it's difficult to overtake. In addition drivers can push to the limits straight away.
Good point about refuelling. It added another variable that made the races more interesting, especially if it was difficult to pass on certain circuts.

I'm so happy they went from this to actually showing the midfield during TV broadcast. I recently watched the 2004 French GP and while his 4 stop was amazing it was kinda boring seeing just one car driving on its own for 2 hours.

The only accolade I would contribute to Senna is that of the best qualifier ever and amazing rain driver. Michael is literally Prost and Senna combined. He had that measured agression altho he did snap sometimes just like Senna but he was better than Senna in my opinion.
But then you've never seen Jim Clark, who made all that speed and bravery look so easy. He did what Senna, Schumacher, Prost did but with half the effort, and with an elegance and gentlemenly conduct that would be ridiculed today.

Yeah refueling was a blight on f1 I've managed to watch a lot of 80s racing and everything since the 90a and refueling was really the thing that caused overtaking to drop and battling to be cars separated by 30 seconds on track putting in qualifying laps until one of them pitted. It really was the worst era of formula 1

@@tuttutteddy8889 That's precisely because they produce those "terrible" tires that they keep their contracts, because the FOM contracts asks for high degradation tires. Pirelli know how to make good tires that last, if they had been asked to, look at what they are doing in GT3 for example, they make tires that can be pushed for 2h stints on cars weighting 1300kg. But the issue is that the FOM specifically asks Pirelli they make burner tires on purpose. Because they think it will make races interesting.
These camera angles make it look so much faster than the current day ones. The panning wide angles are great for capturing the action but I wish they showed a few more fixed views like this to get a true sense of the speed these days
What happened in the race? Schumacher retired while in the lead on lap 45. Under the safety car he was weaving and locked a brake. He was fine, but Montoya was right behind him and tangled. It was looking like a Schumacher victory at that point. Trulli won, Button second, Barichello third. Alonso crashed while lapping Ralph Schumacher
Just to put Schumacher's lap times in perspective the fasted lap this the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix was 1:15-ish. I would much rather watch these v10s running on synthetic fuel, which are 50 percent lighter and a third smaller vs the current hybrid SUV-sized F1 cars we have today, which are roughly the same speed...
Brawn and todt was unbelievable at strategy and knowing when to make a call but let’s be honest most of their strategy was hey micheal if could you do qualifying laps for half the race that would be great
Leclerc's got some good speed, that's clear. He does make the odd error, but so did Schumacher. The real difference is that Schumacher lifted the entire team, while driving, and while out the car, which helped in races as well.
People always talk about how Ferrari were uncontested, but just rewatching these GPs, you can see that there was always someone biting at their heels like sharks, be it Renault, Williams or McLaren. Always nail-biting. It really isn't a wonder that Renault went on to end the reign. No idea why people said Renault was bad. They weren't.
Even BAR were in contention, Jenson finished 3rd in 2004 taking 10 podiums. Michael was out of the question, but with a little bit more pace he would have been challenging Barichello for 2nd place
This track made Renault better and Ferrari worse, which leveled things in 2004. Then the rule makers, tired of the dominant way Ferrari won the season, banned tyre changes, and tweaked aero rules for 2005. They got their wish and Renault got 2005 and 2006.
Think without the crash he would have won that race by pulling out extra seconds in that car given their race pace was up there which Nearly paid off until the crash.
People like to complain about the F1 direction nowadays but this was much, much worse. Things like the positions and pit stop overlays, picture-in-picture shots of action etc. make it 10 times easier to follow what's happening.
Nowadays we have an absurd amount of invasive graphics which show a lot of useless and unwanted information, such as the "overtake probabilityg" or "tyre perfomance", it looks like Nascar, this is clean and simple and focuses on the drivers fighting for points. The footage is much more enjoyable without the timing tower.
Maybe I'm viewing this period through the rose tinted glasses of childhood, but I preferred the days when people had to build up an overtake over multiple laps, using anticipatory driving tactics, or fuel/tire strategy.
For me, once Michael left Formula one for the first time in my life I just lost interest in the sport. All of the rule changes did not help much either. I dread the day when we finally hear from his family that he has passed on to the great race track in the sky, it will be a sad day indeed.
@@liamquigley891 There's little difference. You had greats then; Raikkonen, Alonso, Schumacher. You had the very good Montoya, the super quick, if a little less race pace Trulli. Button, Ralf Schumacher, Coulthard, Barrichello, Webber, Heidfeld all similar levels and solid drivers. This generation's greats (or one day greats); Russell, Verstappen, Hamilton. Leclerc is close and Alonso is at somewhere close to his best. Norris is very good, and when the car suits him, so is Ricciardo. Ocon, Vettel's current form, plus Gasly and Bottas are all reasonable.

You had greats then; Raikkonen, Alonso, Schumacher. You had the very good Montoya, the super quick, if a little less race pace Trulli. Button, Ralf Schumacher, Coulthard, Barrichello, Webber, Heidfeld all similar levels and solid drivers.
This generation's greats (or one day greats); Russell, Verstappen, Hamilton. Leclerc is close and Alonso is at somewhere close to his best. Norris is very good, and when the car suits him, so is Ricciardo. Ocon, Vettel's current form, plus Gasly and Bottas are all reasonable.
@@Beau_Rivage Junior categories make Russell look better IMO. They're both very quick, but I think Russell has the edge.
