What happened in the race? Schumacher retired while in the lead on lap 45. Under the safety car he was weaving and locked a brake. He was fine, but Montoya was right behind him and tangled. It was looking like a Schumacher victory at that point.
Trulli won, Button second, Barichello third. Alonso crashed while lapping Ralph Schumacher

Just to put Schumacher's lap times in perspective the fasted lap this the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix was 1:15-ish. I would much rather watch these v10s running on synthetic fuel, which are 50 percent lighter and a third smaller vs the current hybrid SUV-sized F1 cars we have today, which are roughly the same speed...

This track made Renault better and Ferrari worse, which leveled things in 2004. Then the rule makers, tired of the dominant way Ferrari won the season, banned tyre changes, and tweaked aero rules for 2005. They got their wish and Renault got 2005 and 2006.

You had greats then; Raikkonen, Alonso, Schumacher. You had the very good Montoya, the super quick, if a little less race pace Trulli. Button, Ralf Schumacher, Coulthard, Barrichello, Webber, Heidfeld all similar levels and solid drivers.
This generation's greats (or one day greats); Russell, Verstappen, Hamilton. Leclerc is close and Alonso is at somewhere close to his best. Norris is very good, and when the car suits him, so is Ricciardo. Ocon, Vettel's current form, plus Gasly and Bottas are all reasonable.
