- As most snowbirds know, the hardest part of camping is getting to your destination. Bad weather can pop up without warning. Here's my story of a trip that didn't go exactly as planned!

I'm a long-haul trucker from Tennessee have been Trucking for over two decades some odd years ago I shut down one afternoon in Missoula Montana woke up about 2 in the morning looked out the window about three and a half feet of snow 34 below zero took a shot of whiskey and went right back to bed set there for 3 days loved every minute of it

I have literally watched this video 50 times, always right before I got to bed. I think how nice and cozy that would be inside the trailer during that snow storm all warm and sheltered and it helps me sleep soundly.

I would hunker down and stay for a couple of days to make sure it was safe..truck stop..showers, food, hot coffee, rest rooms..yea i'm good.
Some Food / Beverages and Snacks for the road would be nice anyway.
TOILETRIES FOR THE ROAD WOULD BE NICE AS WELL. JUST ENOUGH FOR SAY 4 DAYS IN CASE YOU NEED TO END UP CAMPING OR AT A TRUCK STOP WITH JUST TOILETS.

Like you I'm a Winter person. I have U.T.D = Unable to Diagnose, I'm allergic to Summer, Heat, Sunlight, Humidity. Have had every test, allergic, Hormone and Bloods, scans everything. It's just in my D.N.A. I adored this video. It's winter here in Victoria Australia now and I love it, but it does not snow where I am, in the mountains it does. Adore the snow, have never seen, touched or experienced snow and blizzard conditions, but I know I would thrive in them. The little Camper you have is so deceptive, it looks tiny, but the inside is huge and tall. Is it? How cosy and warm. Subscribed as I adore video's like this. I don't do any form of social media only CZcams, so glad I found your channel. Sending my kindest thoughts to you and your family from Victoria Australia. Adore Canada also.

I'm from Thailand and I knew nothing about snow until I went to Iceland and drove in a snow storm there. What a nightmare.
When the temp gets that cold put your clothes in the foot of the sleeping bag to keep them warm as I learned in the Boy Scouts back in the 1940's.
That's a good trick that I forgot about, having been a Boy Scout myself roughly 20 years ago.
I do still live by "Be Prepared".
Learned that in the boyscouts back in the early 70's.
why would you need to keep your clothes warm?

I'm 27 and learned that back as a tenderfoot. We're talking 16 years ago now. Lol
I was a semi driver and I went down in between 2 mountains and I got stuck in a 8 foot snow drift. I got out and measured it and made sure that I was still on the road and I was. I spent 2 days with no cellphone reception in my truck but I had a full tank of fuel and food to eat. I kinda felt like I was camping. It was pretty fun. I had my TV and movies to watch until I seen a plow truck come. I had to remove the snow away from my truck to get out but I was able to drive again. I would recommend everyone to have food with them in the winter and keep your gas tank full as possible. Warm clothes would be a definite plus in your survival in this situation. I was lucky to have soup and a electric cooktop to heat up my soup. I never thought I would be in that situation but I had everything I could ask for and I had fun during that time. Alone in the Washington state woods and I even had Christmas lights on in my truck to help keep me positive. I did try to shovel my way out but I wasn't going anywhere, I drift was so huge and I would have needed alot of space to backup and get my speed up the mountain ahead of me. Even with chains and the road plowed, my tires were just barely getting up the mountain but I had no other issues after that and I am lucky to have everything I had and I was lucky that was the only time that happened. I didn't need a tow truck, I was only stuck because of the massive snow drift. It was as if my truck was suctioned cupped into the snow, when I was stuck. I said to myself, really, I have the worse luck but then I relaxed and enjoyed the rest cause I worked all week. I got my much deserved 34 hour restart and I had a emty 70 hours log book again. My company was laughing when I told them I had all the soup and coffee I could eat and drink because I had just went for my week shopping in Portland OR, while I was coming from LA to Seattle and then I was going to pickup a load in the backwoods of Washington and head east but the load was taken off me, when I got stuck and I wasn't able contact anyone.

What impressed me was your positive attitude towards the weather, and you kept a smile going. Glad you made it home safely.
Sir. If you do not have one install a CB radio with the long whip antennas. Not a small hand-held as they are not good on the range. Truckers are your best source for asking about road conditions...”West bound can you please let me know how the roads are looking behind you”? That sort of thing without even leaving the truck stop yet. I was over the road for 9-10 years and learned just how good the network with the truckers is. Safe travels.
a loooong antena..... 160 to 200centimeters , and a small president William CB, or a Midland Alan 52 (like mine) makes a lot of difference. also the chatter is sometimes more intereting that the radio. limited to 4 watt in TX mode but verry long RX with a bood and well calibrated antenna. also very very cheap. midland can be fitted with bluetooh hdeadset
@Rich Gibson Can confirm this, I'm a mechanic at one of the largest trucking companies in the USA, more than half the trucks I work on don't even have a CB these days
@@Acid0atm3al Which is sad, but the drivers these days rather vlog their trip or live stream. When I was otr, I almost always had my cb on.
@@Acid0atm3al Owner/operators will likely be users of CB, or at least have them in their rigs - company trucks probably won't have them unless drivers bring their own.

It's only 42 degrees where I live, and at least 65 inside my house, yet I'm watching this while rolled up like a burrito in my electric blanket! So awesome that he was stranded himself, and helped the trucker out! My grandfather was a trucker, and I feel he would want me to say: thank you for that! Classy move sir! 👍
Gonna make a suggestion here that I offer for anyone sleeping in cold conditions. Much as you dress in layers for the cold you should prepare you sleeping area in layers. There is a reason why there are such a thing as four poster beds and there is no reason you can’t recreate that effect in your trailer bed. A simple horizontal line running from head to foot of your bed with some sort of cloth “tent” above your body will help to hold in the heat escaping your body and not diffusing it into the ambient air of the trailer. Especially considering where you are it will help to dampen sound and light pollution in your sleep

I have been a truck driver for 20 years. I have used the electric heating pad style for years. Saves a lot of fuel.

Old video but I just had to comment. When I lived in Calgary I was known to travel to that truck stop in Shelby because I loved their chicken fried steak! Always fun at the border “how long will you be in the U.S.?” “Just going for lunch, I’ll probably see you on my way home!” I used to keep my passport in my camera bag because I’d be down in the Lethbridge area taking picture and just have a hankering for their chicken fried steak. Mmmm…now I want one and I’m about three hours outside of Calgary, not so easy to hit up Shelby anymore! Great video, you’re an awesome story teller.

That’s the thing about Canadians, no matter how crummy their situation, they’re always willing to bear a hand. I grew being good friends with some Canadians that lived up the road, best damn neighbors you could think of. “We saw it snowed and had the tractor out already, so we plowed your drive.”
Win. Bear that in mind, life lesson there.
When the roads are that bad I would not have left the truck stop. There are so many dangerous drivers on icy roads. Glad that it worked out for you. Thanks for sharing
I, too, would have stayed at the Truck Stop & probably would have turned South when the weather & roads permitted. That's just MEeee & my opinion.

You had me chuckling when you commented on earthquakes. A Southern California person the only sizable one I missed was January 17, 1994. We had moved to Canada for a couple of years. Some are pretty darn scary but most are like a street party. You go out to make sure you gas line isn’t leaking and wave to the neighbors who are doing the same. Pretty soon you go see if anyone remembers how to turn the gas back on, and everyone talks about the pros and cons of the the valves that turn off the gas if the lines are shaking. Someone checks the elderly and gets the water heater and the stove going. We make one more lap to see if everyone talked to loved ones who are out of the area and check on news of places to avoid or roadways not checked yet. And the party is over.
Thanks for the experience. I’ve been thinking maybe an A-line is our next step in camping. Tenting is nice but now that we are camping just two of us and two dogs I would not mind skipping ground clothes and hunting for tent stakes in the dark.
I just bought new Aliner in Florida. I can't imagine how cold that must be. I love the sunshine and will only go north in the summer. I learn a lot watching these videos. I had a Runaway camper before so it's a big step up for me.
As a 2004 liberty owner seeing this was awesome. I think you just convinced me as to what little trailer I wanted to get for road adventures. Thank you!
The A-liner is the perfect roof shape for shedding a snow load! Imagine a flat roof RV in this weather. You would have to climb up every hour to brush snow off, ugh! Actually, this is also an ideal scenario for a Dewalt 20V leaf blower - just blow that dry snow off!
That dirty brown snow reminded me of my days in Buffalo, NY. The snow would cling to the back bumper behind the tires in one big clump you had to kick off! These clumps littered the whole place. So glad I live in California now! Nice scenery you showed us, thanks Slim!
The A-liner also has hard sides, so you can stay in grizzley country.
I've got to say, this is probably one of my favorite videos that you've made. It has a sense of adventure and survival that I remember from when I lived out west.

It's so unfortunate that people felt that they had to criticize and throw hate at you just because you were telling what happened you in that storm. Especially due to the fact that I'm pretty sure None of that would have the guts to boon dock in the snow and cold weather like you have. I quite enjoyed that video. And the bad weather blues also... So much so that I put them on a playlist and watched them often. My co-workers have also enjoyed your videos on our breaks and lunch hours. We are preparing for the day when we get to retire and go out on the road. Watching you educates us (we all want to go with very small trailers) and treats us to your cool editing and awesome humor as well... Thank you for that... 😀😀😀

In those adverse conditions I suggest putting a customized cheap tarp over your roof, would save you a lot of work when packing up.

The dollar tree has moisture absorbing packages. I picked up three and tried them out in my pop-up. Outside temp. was 18 and warmed it up with a propane heater to 60. The next morning no condensation at all. They work well for three bucks.

Cat litter works great for absorbing moisture. I dont even have a cat but I keep a scoop of it in a sock under my front car seat and I've never had issues with condensation inside the car.

A simple candle will keep you warm as well. It is surprising how much heat they provide without endangering your health.

No slim i love cold winters when you are out camping and I can enjoy the coziness of your trailer, your tea drinking and working on your video. That's coziness. I can look out the window seeing the snow falling, or the rain, not sure which one I love best. Snow or the rain. I think a good old rain storm will suffice. Thanks for sharing. Go safely. Thanks for the video Slim . I just retired last week @66 . Will be making my way from California to the Springfield,Missouri area where I bought a nice farm there . I’m leaving right after I spend Thanksgiving with my son and his family here . I’ll be pulling a 10 ft utility trailer with a F-150 4x4 . This time I’ll pack along a set of snow chains just in case ,one set for the truck and one for the trailer to keep it in line . I’ve driven in snow before many times( 43 yrs driving truck cross country) but still respect the ice and snow . You did right calling it quits before it got dark , glad everything went alright and you made it home safely !

Springfield is pretty cool, I used to live Mount Vernon, Mo. not too far from there. I was born and raised in So Cal, so at first it was culture shock, but I met some of the nicest people I've ever met in that area. I remember one winter I think it was 2005 then a bad ice storm hit the area and were were out of electricity for 13 days! thank God we had a huge fireplace. I ended up moving back to So Cal, but I still think about how beautiful it was living there on that great little farm. I hope you will love farm life!

NOTE FROM SLIM POTATOHEAD: I've had a lot of questions about the electric blanket. The one I have runs on 12Volts, 2.5 Amps (Measured, not rated amps). It is powered by the two 12V batteries I keep in my trailer. These are charged by my solar panels. Being low current, it is just enough to keep me warm under my sleeping bag in below freezing temperatures. As it is low current, it does not drain my battery significantly overnight. I put a link to a similar blanket on Amazon (see video description). Hope this helps. Thanks! SP
UPDATE Nov 22: The electric blanket I linked keeps getting SWITCHED by Amazon as sellers sell out! Not the same as I originally recommended, and I can't control this. Just make sure you know the WATTAGE before you purchase. Thanks! SP

Some certainly do. The one I recommend claims 40 watts, but many use 75 watts or more. One with a low setting is definitely preferred if battery reserve is limited. Thanks! SP

I think most were thinking the same whilst watching this. ''Is he gonna drain his main battery.'' But I guessed you had an alternative power source. I drive a ford transit van that is useless in the snow when unladen, but nevertheless I always keep many items in my storage place above the cab accessed from the cargo area. I keep a warm blanket, two torches, a small spade, a warm fleece jacket, spare socks, spare gloves, two purpose designed tow ropes with a 1.5 ton break limit, a tool box with all assortment tools, jump cables and two pocket cigarette lighters, a small hand brush for sweeping snow off stuff , a first aid kit, a steel fire resistant dish for cooking on a fire and a spare litre of drinking water along with a bag of non perishing food including tins of food. Summer or winter I have these. When the time comes whereby you have or find yourself in an unexpected negative position you would be grateful you have these supplies. Never underestimate Nature and what it can throw at you.

Glad to see you made it alright. If you're gonna get stranded pays to have one of those cool little camper thingy's. I'm living in BC these days, back when, just after the Gulf War, (I think in terms of events not years) I was back in Alberta shoveling out my truck, and cursing nature. The remainder of my family had all moved out to Vancouver BC some years before. Anyway, I call my brother up had a nice conversation but said he had to go and mow the lawn before he lost the daylight. They hadn't had any serious snow in years. I hung up said screw it and packed up deciding it was time I moved out to the coast.
I slugged through Calgary and over top the Coquihalla highway, got down the other side and saw my first lush greenery in weeks. Clear roads and green fields. As I approached Vancouver it began to snow, which turned into the worst snowstorm they had had in decades. I was crawling along the highway literally the only vehicle. Luckily I had a tricked out Toyota 4X4, that thing was like a tank in any conditions. By the time I reached my parents house there was over 4 feet of snow and still coming down in blankets. Gotta love mummy nature. 😁

In the past, quite awhile back I almost bought a small popup, then ended up buying a 17' travel trailer about 25 years back. It was a better choice than the popup camper especially when I used it in winter months. I had been looking at the A Liners for that reason as well because you have a hard shell as opposed to the canvas shell on a popup. For the vehicle you have I think you made an excellent choice on your camper. You can be warm and comfortable in it even in winter conditions, warmer than you would be in a popup. I always used the furnace in my camper when using it in the winter. I had two, 20# propane tanks on it but they do go fast when it's cold.
My Wife found your channel just by browsing the tube so we both subbed. We spend our time mostly making long hauls on I-80 from east to west. We both found your channel interesting as we are both well prepared also for most anything. But our w900 KW has a good size sleeper that is our home away from home for 3 weeks out of each month and than 1 week at home. I fail to see why anyone in their right minds would give you issues so you would need to clean them from your channel. We both feel really bad for you as you don't deserve it at all. Whats-It's-Like I totally agree with you 100%,,,, somehow the system,, has failed all these CZcams sites,, I can see it in the future that you'll have to take out an insurance policy, for any texting, demeanor, malcontent, sarcastic,, criticism. Glad you made it home safe. Driving in snow can be treacherous. Here in Westchester N.Y. drivers were stranded on roads over night in only six inches of snow. It pays to be prepared.
I love the snow I live in southern Oswego county NY north of Syracuse and we just got 20+ inches from winterstorm avery last week it gets me laughing everytime you have the veteran snow drivers and the people who think they know what they're doing and people that haven't a clue 3 types of drivers and when we get lake effect snow forget it blinding snow blowing snow thunder and lightning all at once off the good old lake Ontario
Similarly here in eastern PA on 11/15 the region here was paralyzed for almost 24 hrs.. Snow got ahead of the plows and the motorists.
Another reason why I left Westchester County and NY state !!
Informed citizen aye another Westchester resident! I live 10 minutes away from my job in Peekskill, and it took me upwards to an hour to get home. And I left when the snow just started to stick.
I'm in the Bronx. So you already know the nightmare it was. Almost all of the major street roads were gridlocked on that Thursday

I'm glad you made it back ok! I live here in Montana and I still freak out when I have to drive on icy roads like that especially every day! Even though I work 1 mile away from home, I dread driving to work and back. Loved the video and will tune in for more!

Seems a lot easier to keep warm, than it is to keep cool. I much prefer the cold weather... Makes you feel alive, rapping up warm in the freezing cold
I love the winter to. For one reason it keeps our loud drunk neighbors inside and not outside yelling.

When a person is properly prepared and equipped for some snow and cold it ain't that bad.
I go for a bicycle ride and a walk every A.M. about 6:10 most of the winter in temps 15 degrees F and up then go home and toss some oak in the stove and enjoy the fire. As Slim mentioned in the beginning cold is okay if you are planning and prepared to be in it. Tough trip for ya Slim. Glad you let us enjoy it too. Thanks.
Truck Campers reign supreme when snowstorms happen and are awesome for Stealth Camping as well, plus side to look at least you where at a truck stop so you could get food and other essentials, If your stuck and tires spinng cardboard works really well to get your tires working again :)
After RV'ing through USA and MExico with our 4 kids from 04-07 we settled in the Caribbean and 3 years ago moved to MN. I'm LOVING your channel! Off to buy some "get out of the snow" traction stuff too!
FWIW, Slim; I prefer a polypropylene balaclava on my head when I crawl into bed in my insulated Cargo Van because & keeps my head & neck warm + it stays on my head no matter how many times I twist/turn while sleeping.
I love these 'teaching videos'! I think this really answered my questions. Just lifting the roof in warm weather would be challenging for me and the A-Liner would be a lot more physical than some of my other RV considerations. Your journeys are wonderful and fascinating, even if horrific at times. I always learn from them and enjoy them!
My Aliner is 15 years old and the springs are shot. New A-frames are easy to lift, some even include hydraulics. Dont use mine as an example! SP

I enjoy cold weather because I have very overactive sweat glands and cold weather is the only time I can be normal and walk for 1 minute without dripping with sweat and being embarrassed ;)
Same with me really except even in the cold I’ll sweat because my body will randomly heat up.
Same here. Winter is my best friend since ageing.
I wouldn't exactly call it stranded being in the safe confines of a truck stop with plenty of help nearby if it was needed. Nevertheless interesting..
