When I was in the US Air Force I was stationed at MacDill AFB Florida in 1974. I had orders to go to Eielsen AFB near Fairbanks Alaska. I drove which was around 5000 miles. Back then the Alcan Hwy was 1200 miles of unpaved dirt muck. On the way up was in November. I drove a 2 wheel drive International Pickup Truck towing a 26 ft. Airstream Trailer. The roads were frozen and muck and ice. Driving straight up high mountains sometimes having to be towed the rest of the way up. The way back I drove a 1969 Ford 4x4 and also towing the Airstream. I came back in April during “Breakup”, meaning melted snow, ice and muck. The whole Alcan Hwy, all 1200 miles were like the road you were on and even much worse. It was the Best memories of my whole life driving that road. Of course I have some amazing stories, too much to tell here. Happy adventures!

All the roads used to be like that...not too long ago.

looks like a standard road for anyone working in the alberta oilfields, which is why it's best traveled in winter. cue "iohan gueorguiev, see the world" videos when he started his biking trip some 5 years ago.

Anytime the upper layer of the road is frost and snow free, it's road repair season in the far north. I have frequently take a massive, rear wheel drive, class A motorhome, through conditions as bad, and even worse than this. There are times when the road is so bad they end up building a temporary dirt bypass, off to the side, as they dig a really bad area out, or replace a failed culvert. As to why it's allowed to remain open, there is no choice. In many areas it is the only land route available to get to a village, mine, or other destination. If you see a land accessible village, or larger town on a map of YT, AK, or most of the northern half of Canada in general, chances are that it's only got one road in, and out. Governments try real hard to avoid absolute closures, and plan far ahead if there is no choice. A closed road can cause a lot of stress and expense to a village that gets cut off. Everything from food and fuel to medical care can be a big problem once you have to fly everything in and out.

It’s strange that even with today’s stunning cameras, you still can’t capture the magnificence of nature when seeing it though your own eyes. Great videos, and at least we get a taste and entertainment, not such a bad deal.

Another great video! I can relate to the nervousness of being in the middle of nowhere and low on fuel!

WOW! Wonderful video. That’s a trip I would love to make. I’ve been on the Alaska Highway five times but never on the Dempster to Tuktoyaktuk. Our Lance trailer would not do as well as your little egg.
