    I started buying coins as an "investment" and after years of learning, earning an accounting degree, market investing, and real estate investing. I continue to buy coins as a collector. Nothing more. Every time my wife buys a pair of shoes, I buy a new coin.

      Precisely. I like knowing the value of what I buy mainly to ensure I get a fair value for my money and don't overpay. But once a coin is in my collection I couldn't care less what it is worth. That's the problem of whoever gets them after I die, because I don't intend on selling my collection during my life if I can help it.

    One of the best videos for guidance for any precious metals investor. The "Successful Series" part is my favorite because I have been doing this since I started collecting. The Perth Mint Lunar Series has a proven record of increasing in value and I try to buy a couple of rolls each year of the new release. I have almost doubled my money on the 2015 Year of the Goat as of two years after purchasing.

    My grand plan is to be a collector for 15 years without the pressure of being a seller, im loving not only picking the coins that i like the most but also betting on certain coins that i think will keep a long term and increased value. Sets are good as there will always be one star coin and hopefully the sum of all their parts will be greater than just an individual. Hopefully im building a collection that could rival in any small part the best of the best

    Another great video 👍
    I adore the Silver Krugerrand, really bought into the tradition of it, and what it represents in the world of bullion coins. An absolutely iconic design, now in silver.
    The question I'd like to raise is ... did they really mint 1,000,000 of the 2017 with the anniversary privy mark, as there seems to be a conflict of opinion on how many were sold, as the initial premium on the coin was high, and the coin seemed to get a bad reception when it was launched.
    I'm not talking the proof issue, but the BU one.

      Shadow Stack yes borg wisdom.. assimilate but as with all things one needs to choose friends wisely and listen to the right voices. Crowd wisdom has often allowed people to make money or to avoid losing money but the real money is often to be made by betting 100% against crowd wisdom and behaving anti cyclically. When nobody is there buying and the world looks to be a dark place, that is mostly exactly the right time to buy.

    Every silver or platinum coin that Ive moved on ive not lost on, having said that, using the proceeds to purchase more expensive metals has required additional funds. An example for getting more than that you need is definately something I benefited from, was indeed the Queens Beasts series. Getting several sets of these, I was able to recycle complete sets that included several of the early ones from EU suppliers that didnt attract that UK rip off tax.
    Im pretty sure my one remaining set has cost me nothing.

    There's nothing wrong with buying coins for the sake of investment - money can be made from gold and silver bullion coins. But the true numismatist collects coins for the love of the coins themselves, their history, their designs and beautiful edges. The metals and content that make up the coins interest us and their unique marks and signatures as well as the fascinating process of coin minting.

  • @roxdude

    usually when demand outstrips supply no matter what it is prices increase. until no ones buying then prices drop.
    say all of a sudden the market becomes more saturated prices will drop certain things have a true value and they will not drop below that point and i guess thats the price point you need to be getting in at. like buying a house before housing market tumbles thats problem with bubbles they burst. so getting in on bottom rung of the ladder always a smart move.

    Excellent points - agree with all mentioned. I actually would add that the online community/market is different than the coin show/coin shop market. Something modern that sells well on eBay might be looked over 100s of times at a coin show full of 1800s coins the older collectors grew up dreaming about owning. Your points are accurate for our online community, but things in the coin show world seem far more complex.

    • @Numistacker
      @Numistacker  Před 7 lety +2

      You make an excellent point about the online community and the coin show community and the limited cross-over there is between them. I sense this is gradually changing but when you think how many dealers of coins there are and how little impact they make on social media or on you tube thats good evidence. The ebay market is an important market and moderns are very unrepresented at coin shows. I believe though that the "stacker/collector" is one of the most powerful reasons why the traditional coin world has not suffered even more. My experience is modern/PM is the entry point and that many many then go on to other interests and that there is a good flow from silver to gold.

    Do you think the value of the bullion sovereigns, half-sovereigns, etc. will be brought up at all by the desirability of the proof sovereigns this year, even if they don't have the same design (or low mintage)?

    • @Numistacker
      @Numistacker  Před 7 lety

      guigal2 in all honestly I think the probability is extremely low. I think the proof sovereign will keep it's very high value indefinitely whilst the half sovereign proof may soften. The bullion sovereigns with the special privy are likely to stay bullion only and may generate an extra $2 on eBay but a dealer will give no premium.

  • @CoinsAZ
    @CoinsAZ Před 7 lety

    Excellent points. In my view, the "crowd wisdom" hype and effect may be the single most influential price factor in terms of short term appreciation of newly released coins. As I have already pointed out in Shadow Stacks' video discussion, aesthetically poor coin designs can and have been on occasion good short term flippers. Whether those coins with poor quality designs can withstand the test of time is yet to be seen in most cases. And of course, what constitutes aesthetically good or poor coin design is for the most part a subjective opinion as any coin / stacker forum or video channel is a testament of this fact. Bottom line, positive/negative hype can make and break the short term appreciation of a product. An example that comes immediately to mind is the SM Mint Lunar Skulls series. 2014 saw very positive hype and amazing short term appreciation while the following year there was lots of controversy over the 2 different versions minted by competing mints and the result was negative hype and ultimately poor performance of the 2015 edition in the aftermarket.
    Keep up the good work with the vids!

      Coins A-Z thanks for the excellent and insightful comments. I do think that those of us who spend time and effort understanding the dynamics of this complicated little market do ultimately make better decisions and benefit more. I still believe diversification is extremely important and that generally it is better to invest in a few better coins for the long run.

    • @CoinsAZ
      @CoinsAZ Před 7 lety

      Yes, diversity tends to lower risk in almost every context of investment. Shiny door stops (generic silver bullion bars) might be useful in the aftermath of a remotely possible and far off set of circumstances, but other than that it seems a wiser bet to, as you write, have "a few better coins for the long run."

    • @Numistacker
      @Numistacker  Před 7 lety +1

      garth kbikes if I had to choose between the Nanjing mint swan and mandarin duck with 199 minted or the Perth Mint swan with 25,000 then I would choose the Nanjing Swan but then again one of my points was relative mintage rarity and for a bullion coin from Perth the swan is a low relative mintage.

    • @motorbikez
      @motorbikez Před 7 lety

      Yes I get that Numi, but I think Perth mint swan is a design classic & very desirable, I would say your view that swan is 2nd rate design is not the case IMHO, I think it is a simple & classy design which appeals to me.
      Although personally I'm not that interested in the Bu version, if & I guess when they bring out the 1oz proof I'll definitely buy one.

    • @Numistacker
      @Numistacker  Před 7 lety +2

    I recently discovered 5 oz pandas not the insane mintages of one oz plus much higher def images and as you go older super packaging used to be wood boxes recent years plastic I saw as they get older prices are double or even triple so bought several years you sold me on the key sov years like 2017 where mintage are in the thousands not millions which I would never buy like You pointed out 8 million mintage of a panda

    The 1/2oz mouse would currently be worth £500-£600 GBP + & maybe a lot more at auction, the last one that came up for auction sold for $1730 USD in an insane auction LOL

      garth kbikes that was a good investment )) what do you think the Ox is worth?

    • @motorbikez
      @motorbikez Před 7 lety

      LOL it was a good investment :) currently I'd value 1/2oz ox around £200-£300 GBP as it is not as rare as mouse.That is a big spread but it just depends on who is after it & for what reason, mouse of all sizes will always make big money as collectors are always on the look out for them & have the money to buy at high price.
      As I have mentioned on my lunar proof video of a couple of years ago, you see mouse you buy it LOL.
