AVOID THESE 10 COIN COLLECTING ITEMS - PROCEED WITH CAUTION

In this video, I set out to identify 10 items that I would avoid purchasing when coin collecting from a resale perspective. However, it's super important to remember that fun is still at the forefront of collecting (it is a hobby, after all), so this video is more directed at people who are wondering if their items are good long term investments. I have bought tons of these items (I think 5 or so) and don't regret most of them, but I do want to caution people dipping their toes into the hobby that some items won't resell very well at all in the future. From modern commemoratives to newer proof sets to plated coins to Etsy finds to unsearched eBay lots, know what to look out for so that you don't get hurt down the road!

I've been a numismatist for 55 years. This is a good video. He's basically saying if you like the coin, if it appeals to you then buy it, but just know that you might be buying something that will bring little or no return for your money. Buying coins because you like how they appeal to you is very easy. Buying a coin that will increase in value takes lots of education and research.
Really like this comment. Going to pin it so others can - summarizes the video very well.
My father was an amazing numismatist and I've picked up a lot from him. He's since passed but I remember all he taught me and one thing aside from making a purchase that will reward a nice return is that he also told me if it's not that important for me to make the return and I like the item I want then, by all means, buy it. It's all a matter of personal preference, not always about the money. After all, I'm not a greedy person but do purchase items with considerable return value but items I just want to have too.
Sir i have american phillipines 1907 coin.
I don't know that I've bought ANY coins as an investment. I collect mainly ancient coins, but have some other because I like them. My heirs can get the money when they sell.
Yes, not all collectors do it for a huge profit. I do it for both, my father was a numismatist so I've learned a lot from him but I too buy some items, not for profit but because I do like them.
Just my opinion:
You should include visual aids.
Nice information though :)!
Will try to do more of them in my upcoming vids! Thanks.
@@TreasureTownCoins how do u feel buying from amazon.. I'm a new silver collector thanks
I collect bicentennial quarters, I keep them when I find them in my pocket change, I don't expect them to be worth more than face value.
They're fun to have, especially at face value.
I collect the ones i find, but dont shop for them to buy.
Same. They were my favorite coin to collect as a kid. I actively search for them when I'm coin roll hunting. They are good album fillers.
I used to horde them hoping to find a silver bicentennial, but after I'd get about 16 bucks worth I'd swap them at my local shop for an ounce of silver.
Susan B Anthony's love em
I've always been skeptical of the "unsearched" rolls and bags of wheat pennies. Even assuming the seller was honest and the seller never searched them the pennies did come from someone and that someone very likely did search them.
Definitely agree with you on that one.
It all makes sense. Sometimes I buy stuff just because I like a coin, not for investing.
My 17 year old son, who is a total Capitalist, thinks I'm stupid for buying something that won't be more valuable in the future. 'It's not your money kid, leave me to my devices.' 😁

Once again a top notch presentation by this young man.
Thanks Michael!
Two things I think you missed. 1 I have seen " collector" coins advertised with one side having a colored commemorative. Most recently one for the moon landing, the one I actually saw appeared to be a sticker on the coin.
2. Buying unsearched rolls, buy them from the bank. At least you won't lose any money that way.
I think you're correct with those ones!
I haven't actively collected coins since I was a teen, and I'm 65 now. I have watched a number of your videos, and you are an unending source of sound advice. Thank you for giving such good counsel to anyone who will take the time to listen.
That's awesome to hear! Thank you so much for your support - welcome to the channel!
I don’t think I have much to worry about because I don’t buy coins. I find them in the world. That is the fun part for me! Going to vending machines and putting the quarter in until you get a collectable, or switching them out with your normal change when working with a cash register. It’s more like a coin hunt for me
That's pretty cool!
I had a cousin that was a professional coin collector and seller and he always told me that if you collect junk then you have a junk collection...
First off it’s nice to see younger people that still collect coins. Great advice to I’ve been collecting for awhile and have made a few of these mistakes. The part about Ebay and the rolls of Unsearched coins is 1000% correct 99% are fake
Thanks man! The unsearched rolls are not too good. I buy a few from time to time to search on this channel but that's about it (and I know going in that I won't do well).
I subscribed a while ago, and I appreciate that you are about valid, truthful information, rather than screaming at the beginning of the video, and planting bait terms in the title. You may be young, but you know what you're talking about and that's what matters! Good job 👏!
I appreciate the knowledge me and my grandsons are starting to collect and I'm glad I watched your video
That is awesome!
Thanks
It’s my grandson and I . Where did you go to school Disneyland ?
I think he did a great job! When I look around and see the video game junkies and the young people with their noses glued to their phone it is very refreshing to see a guy this age who is far ahead of the pack in my mind.
Appreciate it Greg! I have a lot of fun collecting and wanted to give my thoughts for others' benefits. Thanks.
@@TreasureTownCoins I just started collecting and ran across your video. I thought the content was great and the video was professionally done.
@Blue collar Gold pockets You misunderstood my comment obviously.
I thinks it's refreshing too. I am a vidoegamer and new to the art of coin collecting
@Blue collar Silver dollar take it how you choose but I thought I was encouraging him and commending him.
I thought the video was very professional.
Even an old guy like me can learn from him.
I think you read way too much into my comment.
Great video! I remember buying my first "grab bag" on eBay. Biggest coin buy mistake I've ever made. Never bought another one, and I've learned the rule to always make sure you know exactly what you're paying for.
Thanks Kendrick! Probably worth the money for the lesson (though I hope to provide it for free :) )
My favorite way of collecting coins is finding them in my change (silver coins) or finding them when tearing down an old building or under old carpet when replacing the carpet. When I have more free time, I'd like to use a metal detector in farm fields where homesteads used to be to see if I can find any old coins. About 40 years ago, I found an Indian head penny laying on the surface of the dirt in a former barnyard behind my childhood home. It was well worn, but still cool to acquire an old coin that didn't cost anything.
That's really awesome!
I bought a home built in 1957 and during the rehab we found a peace dollar in the wall! Apparently that was a common practice back then for good luck, 16 years later I still have the coin 😊
I love collecting Eisenhower dollars; I know they are clad but it reminds me of when my dad bought me some and I was mad because I couldn’t fit them in my piggy bank 😂😂😂.
They are super fun! I have a bunch that I just got rid of actually but it's a neat series. Some cool errors.
I love the 40% silver Ikes. They're rare, but they fit in well as a modern counterpart with the Morgan's and Peace dollars. :)
If the Ike dollars had had high relief it would have been a nice coin. That is what I always hated about the Ike dollars they almost have no relief at all. The only decent ones are the proofs.
That was and is simply adorable 💗👌☉👈
My father gave me a `74 D Ike Dollar when i was child and i still have it 😎
Fantastic video, especially for those who are novice numismatists. When I started coin collecting, I wish that I had heard these pointers. As it is, my early buying blunders weren’t generally too egregious, and, even though my first coins aren’t worth much, they have a lot of personal value.
Exactly - a lot of memories tied up in those old beginning coins we started out with.
This is my favorite coin channel. You’re videos are very informative and offer info that’s not the same as every other youtuber. Keep up the great work
Thanks so much, Hunter! I try to come at it from a different angle - appreciate that you pick up on that!!
This video came up as a recommendation with my metal detecting videos, I haven't got a clue about American coins but I'm enjoying it & thank you, so watching while sorting out my medieval coins found here in Oxfordshire England
That would make a nice video.
@@Gumardee_coins_and_banknotes
Thank you sir,
When I've sorted them all out after a house move & can work out how to do it, I might give it a try.
Thanks! Good luck - I hear about some cool medieval trove finds from time to time - hope you find one!
Very informal video. I'm a seller and collector been one for a few years. I get so frustrated when I see scams on Ebay and other sites. To me it's completely a disgrace to the hobby. I honestly think some of these frauds should be penalized or even booted from the Hobbie some of these sites can enforce this to a degree but for reasons I know not choose not to.
EXCELLENT information!! I agree 100%, it is mainly about the fun! I also agree that it's equally important to always be buying coins that will add the best value to a collection.
Thanks! Glad to see others on board!
I went into a small grocery store bought a roll of quarters a personally rolled One .came home opened it it was all collectable quarters and error quarters a dime plan-set filed quarter I can’t spell .i was holding a estate rolled roll .it felt strange to hold somebodies collection knowing the person was gone .With out cashing in them .
As a cashier i got a full roll of 1943 steel pennies, along with a bunch of other penny rolls, all sorted by year, lotta late 40's and 50's. I know they arent worth anything much over face value, but obviously they were someone's child/grandchild taking an estate collection and buying fricken cigarettes with WW2 history, and about 20$ in pennies grandma had been holding onto for 70 years. It was sad to see.
How many times have you been asked “I have a steel penny, how much is it worth? (No description, no photo) these people are nuts. 😂😂🤷♂️🤷♂️
Hahaha too many times to count
I think you did a really good job. Good advice. Pleasant voice. I like how you say that having fun is important. I collect coins because my Pop did, and I do not collect with the intention of reselling someday. I do the worst thing possible to my coins. I polish them, because I like them shiny. My hopes are to pass them on to my kids who will continue to keep them in the family, not for their worth, but, for their historical value.
Hey Eric - totally can relate! I also keep my collection small (and not optimized value-wise) since I appreciate the history and fun that goes along with collecting. Thanks for sharing your story!
You are a sweetheart. Morals...not money. My kind of person
God bless 💗
Collect what you want to collect. It's as simple as that. Buy and collect what makes you happy.
Exactly!
Since many modern products from the U. S. Mint have lost value, you can often buy them on eBay for less. Also, I *THINK* there might be some "sleepers" among the commemorative dollars. They hit a bit of a low point in popularity in the 1990s and thus you can find some with incredibly low mintages. For most of them, most people originally bought the proof version, and thus the uncirculated strikes have lower mintage. (My favorite is the 1994 P.O.W. silver dollar in MS70.)
Could be a good point! There are some of those commems that are very expensive (I think the RFK one is). Makes sense. There are also some cool events people could have personal ties to that would make it worth it to pick one up. Thanks for the comment.
I collected a full set of the modern commemorative half dollars. I know most of them aren't worth much or ever will be, but I bought them, cause I liked them. Same with the modern mint sets and proof set and the silver proof sets. I don't plan on selling them. Just wanted them to keep them and update them every year.
It's really fun to get involved with a collection / set that you enjoy collecting. Sounds like a good plan to me! I also collect for fun and not for the money - I just like informing people so that they have the full range of knowledge available when buying.
I started collecting older half dollar commemoratives. I have a 1935-S San Diego half and picked up an 1892 Columbus Expo half. They are both really cool and in fantastic shape. Both coins have great stories to tell.It was fun to read up on them and their true purpose at the time they were minted.
The only one I disagree with is the barber quarters makes sense getting them in higher grades but the survival rate on some are low
Good point. I think that's the weakest case.. might be difficult to recoup the value in twenty years or so though.
Yea I agree with u I think even in the long run they will hold their value or even increase since they are getting harder to find.
All of your info correlate well with many of my LCS and bullion dealers as I spoke with them periodically. Thanks for your honesty to discuss most of the issues in the coin collecting world.
Glad the info seems solid! I do my best. Thanks so much.

Captain Picard, that's hilarious. Thanks for mentioning it. I hadn't noticed. We all need a good laugh.
So True, It made me laugh
Unsearched coin rolls is a scam, but "grab bags" are a sure-bet. Lol.
😂
Hahahaha thanks
My thought on "unsearched rolls" is the seller may not have searched them but whoever sold them to the seller certainly did. They have likely passed through several filters before reaching the seller. What does one do with hundreds of loose wheat pennies bought in unsearched rolls....perhaps sell them back to the seller at face value? Then if he doesnt search them he can honestly claim them to be unsearched and resell them.
Thank you for taking the time and making this video. Your videos are always straight to the point, I'm never left guessing afterwards what you meant !
I appreciate it!
Thanks so much for the info, I'm just starting out as a hobby but by the same token it's always great to know what to invest in and what to generally watch out for and wasting good money on crap. I've already made one mistake of buying a few fakes. But I'm learning and your videos are a great help. Thanks so much !!
Thanks! Glad that I can be helpful!
We all been burnt on ebay with thoes unsearched bank wrap rolls with fingerprints all over them! Lol
Yeah! Stay away!
Wheat pennys here.
Haha! I remember getting burnt years ago on 1969 s LMC rolls I bought off of eBay. Although, it was my fault though! 😁
If you want coin rolls, why not go by the bank and buy direct from them?
this guy when at my age will be rich. I'm sure about that, keep this going and you'll be retired soon.
He looks pretty rich already to most people.

Thank you for this information. It sure will help me when it comes to buying coins.
Been collecting since the mid 1970's..
It was brought at face value back then.
Thanks for your input.
So jealous! Wish I could've started then too!
I am startup to wonder about the 70 s. Maybe... just might wanna look at some sets more closley? 👈
Good video. I also recommend people avoid problem coins, cleaned, altered, etc...
DEFINITELY!
Well cleaned coins are ok in my books as they cost less at my lcs. So for a collector with less money a cleaned coin for cheap could be his purchase for the day/week. Not all cleaned coins are terrible in my opinion.
Why does cleaning or buying cleaned coins matter I’m new to stacking
Generally avoid them, unless it's a major Doubled Die for the series or a major error. I have plenty of problem coins in my collection. Kept them, because I found them myself CRH. A good amount have some value.
Oh man, I just liquidated my 401k and spent it all on Trumpbucks.
Always so informative, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, I learned a lot from this, you were so open and honest and I appreciate that, but I have always avoided those coins from a mint that's not the USA mint
Thanks Kenneth. Sounds smart to me.
I’m putting all my money into Big Mac coins.

Thanks for all those do's and don't's. I probably would've fallen into some of those traps. Thanks again for a very informative video.

Awesome! Thanks for the comment.
First timer. Just subscribed. I've seen a number of programs. Best over all show I've seen or heard. Most of us want to make this (coin collecting) profitable. I learned a lot. Thank you. Keep it coming. Part two?
Really appreciative of the comment! I'll try to make some follow ups in the future!
Never buy high premium new 'collectable' coins. Anything that is advertised as rare or limited is not going up in value. In Australia I can pick up 30 to 40 year old proof sets for about double the price when they were new. That has not even kept up with inflation.
I'm skeptical of the Lunar series from the Perth Mint too. To me this is just a cynical marketing ploy to rich Chinese. If the coin is gold or silver? Great! I will back up the truck and buy (assuming the premium is low). But if it's cupronickel? Forget it. Never. Same goes for all coins with paint on them.
Premium is far too high on modern commemoratives & Proof sets.
Totally agree!
Premiums are way too high on silver also, damned if I’m paying $30 for an ASE!!
Great Video my friend, great info for people just starting out coin collecting! Thanks for sharing! Liked and subbed!👍🏻
Thanks! Agreed - appreciate your comment.
Barber Halves and Dimes are tough to find above VF grades, so an AU is actually a good buy, and will hold and probably appreciate in value. Barber Quarters are a little easier to find in upper grades. Barber coins circulated quite a bit.
Yeah that’s what I thought
Agreed. Although, for everything on this list, if it holds sentimental value for you, then sure go right ahead. I assume you agree with that but just didn't say.
Totally! I think I tried to allude to it... definitely agree.
I like your opinion alot. Seriously...i roll my own cigarettes alot..and I can grant you I know it's the same darn tobacco at the end of that smoke. EXCELLENT ADVICE ON BEING CAUTIOUS
THANK YOU CHRISTIAN 💗

The bottom line is that the only people who make money out of coins are dealers. If you collect, have fun, don't spend more than you can afford, and don't expect to get rich.
#10 I buy these on the after market for near spot, even back to 1956.
#9 I get those at face.
#8 I avoid those
#7 I buy MS70 silver & gold bullion at spot + 0 to 7%
#6 Don't touch them
#5 Only at spot
#4 Forget about them
#3 Mostly searched, they are a scam
#2 Good for kids to learn when they do it themselves
#1 Never do it
Very good video Treasure Town. I hope all new collectors get to see this. I like Tony Creswell's comment.
Thanks so much Meteo! Sounds like you're doing it right - can 'stick near these' if the price is right.

For me, i will keep silver coins with resale values in case of rainy days.
Highly respect your decision to keep business and politics separate. Love the videos and your attitude. Thanks for the knowledge
I appreciate it! That way we can focus on the coins and not worry about that (same with my professors, I appreciate them separating viewpoints/class material). Have a good one!
But, the only person mentioned on a coin was trump :/
If we're leaving politics out of hobbies (and I'm all for that!!!), then let's leave it out completely ;)
Nice young fella and I mean no disrespect, but stick with what you said.
Should have left that out completely.
Comes across as you just needed to mention him for whatever reason.
@@davidgrove481 Trump coins are a perfect example for what he was talking about. It's not political to mention U.S. presidents when talking about coins. Think about that for a minute. Also I'm sure there are a lot of new coin collectors out there who should know the Trump coins they bought are not from the mint. What other modern example could he have used for the subject he was talking about?
Thank you for this video! Really appreciate it! Very honest and genuine intention.

Thank you for the info. Your opinions are spot on. What is the framed coins on the wall behind you? Is that something you put together, or did you buy it? Thanks!
Hi Thomas - I was given it by my coin shop boss and it's a poster called something along the lines of 'The Periodic Table of Currency' by PCGS
I get excited to see such a young educated coin collector. Its great
Watching our younger generations teach one another!👍👍
Good video overall, but one nit to pick. An AU 55 Barber Quarter is a nice piece. Good type coins will always be in demand, and not everybody can afford a MS 63 stunner.
Good point. Definitely better than most investments (I'd probably buy an AU55 when I get around to it for my type collection). I'm just a little skeptical about long term value, but agree that it's by far much more solid of a buy than some of the other items seen here.
Hey, its always good to a bit skeptical. Great to see new numismatists who take the hobby seriously, and add good content!
That was my nit pick too. I actually prefer older circulated coins EF or at least VF. EF shows the design of the coin quite well to me. I collect coins out my interest in history, with a circulated coin I can think of who may have carried it a hundred and fifty years ago. I am buying history not an investment. I had wondered about all these new coins from the US mint, if they were anything to bother with. To me it seems the mint is turning into a souvenir stand
I agree Glenn, nice circulated type coins are much more interesting to me, and getting harder to find problem free examples...
Thanks for great information that’s very helpful keep up the good work
Glad to provide it - thanks for the comment.
I buy unsearched OBW rolls from local dealers. An one day I got 1968 S lincoln memorial cent roll. All of the cents have doubling. I cant remember if it was ddr or ddo. But very cool coins. But, your are correct for this advice. Any new numismatist would be lucky to stumble on this video, well done an well said Christian. Great job, thanks for the hard work an efforts young man.
For sure! And nice on that 68S roll!
i'm not collection to make money i'm collecting because i like collecting
Great video. I just subscribed! Here is my question: What is the best way to sell off lower value coins? Ebay? Coin shops? I look forward to your reply.
eBay definitely has more premium! But it could be pretty time intensive.
Very good advice. When I first got into collecting I was more quantity driven trying to have as much stuff as possible but now that I'm a little more experienced I focus more on rare and high quality bigger ticket items like key dates of popular series (Lincoln wheat cents/ Indian heads, peace and Morgan dollars, etc.) In the best grade that fits my budget. If I'm picking up something like a common date Morgan I try to get something that's at least ms-63 but recently have been trying to go even higher in the ms-65 range or better because as far as I can tell these are the things that appreciate the best over time or will at least hold their value. I stopped collecting clad proof and mint sets all together and now only collect the silver proof sets and I also like to buy generic silver when the market is down, but I'm also guilty of buying some ms-70 ase's and that kind of thing when I find them for a decent price because I like them but at the same time agree with what you said and don't really think they are a wise investment, especially the common dates. I also invest in gold a bit here and there, but with the high cost of gold I try not to sink too much money into it. I might buy 1/10 of an oz here and there when I have some extra money to burn, or I might pick up a gram bar or something if I can get it cheap on like a live auction website and I try to stick with mints that I know and trust like pamp suisse, valcambi, etc.
New Sub. and new to coin collecting. Great video. Thanks for the info on Ebay rolled coins. I've been tempted but now won't waste my $.

I actually don't know a ton about platinum - I will research and maybe make a video!
Great ADVICE half way through the video. Thank you and keep it going.✌
Thanks Margaret!
Excellent video, even though one or two things hurt to hear mentioned. I've collected some of the modern commemoratives, more the silver ones than anything else. Now I limit myself to the yearly silver proof sets. I also collect a LOT more world coins, because I can get better conditions and more unusual pieces for less money. I swear, prices are driving me straight out of US coins.
They are not the worst thing though. World coins are really fun (I collect them) and can also be cheap relatively.
Christian as I said it before , you're knowledge on coins is amazing . Thank you for the info. God bless y'all

I agree with you. I've bought some new production commemorative coins here and there, but only for the looks. There's no real value there, but they look great for display. For the real coins though, it's nice to find a rarity and also nice to complete a collection even with some low value pieces. Great! Thanks Jerry.
I have been collecting coins since the 1990s and I see no point in collecting coins that can be found in my pocket change.
When I think of this I would rather buy unusual, (non-bullion) coins that, while they can't be used in a store, are still interesting
(like a show-stopper).
I believe a true collector should coins for the beauty of them
Thanks for the video. I just started getting into coin collecting for fun. I’ve more so been collecting what I think is cool looking so far and not what is rare. I bought a couple silver eagles but other than that it’s mostly been random coins I thought were neat. I think eventually once I know more about the coins and do my research I will look into getting more rare, valuable coins
My brother-in-law has been buying Morgan dollars. And he looks for the higher graded ones. But he’s not a coin collector, he just wants the silver. I told him not to worry about the grade, if he wants the silver, just buy the coin, or even silver bars.
Very sound advice, especially with point #6. I see a lot of people collect worthless clad coins. They have binders upon binders filled with regular coins, then they get demoralized when the coin dealer offers them face value for all of their worthless coins. It's similar to people who buy cheap jewelry or gold plated jewelry, then get mad when its time to sell it and get offered nothing for it. It's better to save up for that gold necklace, because when it comes time to sell it, you know that the money is still there. Same with coins.

Believe it or not , I'm a Lincoln cent collector and have been for 40+ years....there can/ could be a return on some but I do it for the fun of it. Nothing like sitting down with a new roll of cents.
Definitely a fun feeling!
Yea, out of all the rolls I've ever bought on Ebay, the 2 that were actually OBW were a 69S Lincoln cent roll (subtle rainbow toning around the rim area on all 50 coins....gorgeous roll) and a 1956 Roosevelt dime roll.
There are no unsearched wheat rolls (except for same date). Someone searched them at some point in time.
I feel good all the things you brought up I would never consider spending money on.
Awesome!
Coins are a very tough racket when you try to make money on them. Most of the time you can't even get close to what you paid for them. Great video..
You hit the nail on the head just have fun. Now if I would have heard this 6 months I would have saved lots of money. I can't look back on my mistakes just go forward form her. The way I look at it I have paid well for the education. Thanks for all the great information.
Thanks so much! And yeah, the education is priceless!
I love collecting modern graded proof coins. I'm not trying to make any money off of it, nor do I expect to. I have a lot of fun doing it, and that's the important thing. Good tips for newer collectors. Ty for the vid.
That's actually a super cool collection that I wouldn't have thought of. Sounds super fun - right on. For example, my Type Set is not a great investment but super fun to collect.
Thanks for the grim facts. 🤢
For sure!
Smart kid. 👍
Nice video. The two main points of collecting are that "You are enjoying what you collect.", and that the coins have "Eye Appeal". What I mean by "Eye Appeal" is that you can have two MS63 Large Cents. One is mottled, has lots of small marks, and just doesn't look great, but for some reason, the grading service considered this coin MS63. The nice coin has great colour, the marks are insignificant, and has original luster, and great sharpness. The main thing is to have fun.
I collect US Braided Hair Large Cents, Lincoln Cents (knowing that most will not be worth much if resold), and I collect our of circulation the State and Parks Quarters. My only enjoyment on the quarters is seeing if I can collect each variety and mint mark. It's kind of a game.
Have fun everyone
I’d say this is pretty spot on minus one thing. All the modern commemoratives that come out of the westpoint mint (specifically the ones in gold) are great coins and I believe will retain their value and appreciate over the long run.
2008 gold buffalo 1/4 (about the size of a buffalo nickel)
1999 w gold Washington 1/4 (the brought the design by LGF to life in 2022)
2016 W mercury, standing liberty and walking liberty in gold. (Fantastic coins)
And the 2014 JFK half dollar in gold. An absolutely brilliant coin.
Just my thought. Westpoint gold commemoratives are top of the list for me. That being said, I’d rather them depreciate so I can buy even more.
