    Germany (whatever is in the 2 Michel specialized catalogs) is one of my favorite areas to collect.. always such great designs

      Hi. I have the standard, but I notice some colour variations at least that are not in my catalogue. I am trying to get a cheaper and older set of those Michel Special. In later years, are there variations too? For example, I noticed quite some colour differences in the World of Letter definities, the self adhesives. I bought them on paper, but I just soaked them with water.

      Hallo Dan, my wife is German, so we speak German and Dutch. And in my previous work I had to speak English. I loved speaking all languages. I sometimes get confused though, that I want to speak English but my 'German' brain is more active :-) What are you (planning on) to collect? And yes, it is a really nice hobby.

      Danke für deine Antwort, werde dich mal per Email kontaktieren
      Grüße

    I have 2 quart bags full of modern German stamps to soak but going to check for special cancels and such before soaking.I don't have many of the barcode stamps yet so will have to go hunting . I have found most adhesive stamps around the world will soak except for US which are a pain .

    • @chrislovesstamps
      @chrislovesstamps  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi John. Yep, US stamps are a pain, from the few I tried. What I noticed with the World of Letter definitives (I have hundreds now) is that there is colour differences. I treated all stamps equally, so I wonder if there are really colour differences. I should highlight that in a future episode. I only have a standard Michel German catalogue, maybe the Special catalogue mentions it, I don't know. If you are interested in some stamps, let me know, I literally have hundreds of some of the barcoded ones.

    Hi Chris -very interesting indeed! It seems water (after some time) does the trick with self adhesives. I have avoided self adhesives because I was told you needed a chemical to remove the backing paper. After seeing your video I will give self adhesives a go!! Thank-you for your video !!

    • @chrislovesstamps
      @chrislovesstamps  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Jeff. It all depends on the country and the way they 'set up' their self-adhesives. Canada and Germany is not a problem getting from the paper using regular (luke-warm) water. I heard USA and GB is a problem, if you do not want to use chemicals. Netherlands I am not sure. It can be that Australia (that is where you are, right?) is easy or not at all. Have you tried Australian (or maybe from other countries) self-adhesives? Let me know how it goes, I am curious. On my channel I had the easiest of self-adhesives I think (Canada and Germany). I have a few USA stamps and they did not come from the paper. Thanks for commenting!

      @@chrislovesstamps yes I am from Australia - I have tried soaking Australian Adhesive but I think I did not leave in the water long enough - I will give it another go - Jeff :)

      Hi Chris - I think I found the solution to seperate self adhesive stamps from paper - Luke warm water did not do it at all -so I tried almost boiling water and the stamp seperate almost right away !! I have tried this with a few self adhesives and success with each one.
      The trick is not to leave the stamp in the almost boiling water for long at at all.

    • @chrislovesstamps
      @chrislovesstamps  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Jeff. That goes for Australian stamps, right? Are they known to be hard to get off paper?

    • @jeffsstamps
      @jeffsstamps Před 3 měsíci

      @@chrislovesstamps yes - just for Australian self adhesives - they are really hard to get off paper but the almost boiling water dies the trick (I soak in like warm first for about 5 minutes then the almost boiling water )

  • @GreatStampAdventure
    @GreatStampAdventure Před 4 měsíci +1

    Great video, Chris, with a lot of variation. Thanks! Wow! You could also soak off the German self adhesives with water! I really become aware that sometimes one will be able to get self adhesive stamps off paper using water and that one doesn't have to immediately use other chemicals. Sorry if I missed, but how warm was the water you used? Did the gum also soak off the self adhesive stamps? ... I liked most of the stamps. I really see, that apart from classic stamps, I also like new stamps. They are frequently really beautiful. You are very strict against CTOs. 🙂 ... About the number of stamps - I have too little experience, but I make a wild guess of about 1300. 🥳

    • @chrislovesstamps
      @chrislovesstamps  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi Charnie. I used fairly warm water, not boiling, but a bit warmer than luke warm. No issue getting them off with just water. German modern stamps are not too bad, something about them I like, although they have that barcode thing. But I guess we need to accept it with some countries. Your guess of 1300 is noted. :-)

    I’m surprised to see that you actually handle the stamps??? Your fingers are loaded with oils etc, which will cause damage to the stamps. I was always taught to use tweezers. I do enjoy your videos though, I haven’t been collecting for very long.

      Hi David. Maybe I should have. But I washed my hands, yes, there'll always be some stuff on your hands, and they are soaked in water. I have used tweezers a lot before, and I still do when soaking them off paper, but sometimes you do need your hands.
