  • In Episode 37 I am continuing the series How To Build Your Stamp Collection On A Budget!
    This is a beginner friendly series that aims to provide tips and maybe even tricks to build a collection from scratch while being on a monthly budget. See comment section of all episodes for helpful tips the viewers provided.
    In this episode of the series I am showing you wonderful comments I received from viewers, showing you where I buy my stamps, show stamps from the previous episode in a slideshow, and there is a little bonus in the form of a concept intro to this series I made back in November 2023.
    The idea of the intro was this:
    There is a so-called cappuccino index that tracks how much a cappuccino costs, both on average and in certain areas. I wondered what I could buy for the price of a cappuccino. This slowly evolved into raising the budget from approx. 4,65 (cappuccino price) to 10 euros. The series evolved from November 2023 to this point in a complete guide for beginner and aspiring stamps collectors to what you can buy for 10 euros as a monthly budget and how you would plan on buying everything you want for a collection.

    Hi Chris, I love this series of episodes you are making now! I myself am 54 yrs old now and I also started collecting stamps when i was a teenager with a very small budget of 5 Gulden a month in the 80's. I went every month to the 'Postzegelmarkt' on the Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam by train with my friend and then I bought one or two Dutch series of the 70's or 80's (then stamps were more expensive then now!). Back in the train home I watched my new bought stamps and I remember these moments as the luckiest in my life. Now I am lucky to have a budget of around 500 euro's a month for buying stamps but the feeling still stays the same.....
    So I hope that still kids will enjoy the art of stamp collecting today and create the same beautiful memories of collecting stamps. and your CZcams clips are certainly adding value to that!

      Hi Piet. Thank you for the compliment. I love this series also. Would be weird if I didn't :-) Going from 5 Gulden to 500 Euro is a big increase, even considering inflation and such. What do you do with 500 Euros? Do you buy the more expensive stamps? And what are you collecting?
      Stamps used to be more expensive, I remember that too. In a sense, from a purchasing point of view, stamp collecting is more accessable. I love the story you shared. I am not one to say 'things used to be better', but some things were.
      I remember that next to the Post Office here in Enschede, there used to be this tiny stamp shop. If 5 people were in it, it was crowded already. It was a happening going there. Now all the stamps I have I received in some form or another online: be it buying them myself, or because lovely people send me stamps, knowing me from this channel. I wish both things could exist next to eachother: current age, and stamps shops. Now there are only a few scattered around The Netherlands.
      Anyway, thanks for sharing your lovely story, commenting, and watching!

      @@chrislovesstamps Hi Chris, 500 euros is quite a lot of money yes, but some people spend thousands of euro's each year to go to a distant country for three weeks, and for myself, I think I have a lot more fun buying stamps for it:) I collect mint German Area's and Old Victorian England, so there is where the money goes.. Good luck with your channel and keep making nice videos about stamps!

    Hello Chris, once again a really great topic and series! Thank you for showing us that collecting good, interesting, and beautiful stamps doesn't have to break the bank. Keep up the great work!

      Hi Charnie. Thanks Charnie for the compliment, comment and watching. I think most creators on CZcams know it is possible, maybe not just everyone. And when you land on a 'wrong' forum, they will tell you it isn't possible.

    Interesting site! It seems like a huge advantage to have a local European site like Marktplaats to minimize shipping prices, especially if you can pick something up in person. Good luck on getting an inexpensive collection with a nice stockbook to house all of those beautiful Norwegian stamps!

      @chrislovesstamps  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Hi. Marktplaats is an advantage indeed. I hope it is not 'cheating' :-). I live at the East side of The Netherlands, not a lot of people where I can pick stuff up from, but it is definitly an option nontheless. Yes, I am really looking forward to how this progresses. Sure I already know a bit more than you ;-) but it is a journey that I have not figured out, which is nice. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Thanks Chris for showing those highlighted comments !! I liked see😅by sone clues on picking up stamps on a budget - my problem is it so tempting to go over budget if you see something you love !! Thanks so much - Jeff

      Hi Jeff. It is tempting for me to go over budget also. When I look for stamps for these episodes, for the Norway collection, I just don't look when I don't have budget or don't want to spend anymore. The problem is often that I have spend money and still keep looking. There is always something to want, something to buy :-) Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Hi Ted. I actually checked out who Davie 0504 was. Never heard of him before you mentioned him. I played bass for a really short while also. Let's say I lack the discipline before I could figure out I also lack the talent :-) Thanks for interupting and watching my video, obviously that is the preferred order of doing things ;-)

    Hi Chris, have very much enjoyed this series. I think the most important decision when starting a country collection is taking the time to understand what are the challenges in collecting that country. I had considered Belgium but the recent year sets are quite expensive. Instead, decided to go with Canada I spent several months before making a decision.
    Norway will bring you much joy. I love my Norway collection. Best, Bill😊

    • @chrislovesstamps
      @chrislovesstamps  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Bill. That is a good point. About the challenges. In that case, Norway might not be the best pick. The posthorn series can be challenging. But I figured you can ignore the varieties at the start and grow into it. I hope at least. :-) Are you from the US? Recent modern used stamps from Europe demand a premium here. Germany is maybe the easiest to come buy for a reasonable price. I can see that Belgium is expensive. Are you a world wide collector?
      Thanks for commenting!

    • @w.t.chapman1995
      @w.t.chapman1995 Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Chris, yes I am from the U.S. I inherited a large world wide collection as a child. Collected U.S. and U.N. as adult. Have added Scandinavia, FSAT, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Canada. The only addition will probably be the Canadian Provinces.
      Early Luxembourg (both regular and back of book) are hard to find at a reasonable price.
      I am having a fun time collecting. I appreciate your efforts with your channel and hope you continue to share with us fellow collectors. 😊

    • @chrislovesstamps
      @chrislovesstamps  Před 3 měsíci

      @@w.t.chapman1995 Hi Bill. What is FSAT? Yep, Luxembourg can be tricky. But I found most recent modern used stamps expensive and demanding a premium. Could be a combination of that stamps are not used as much nowadays and that collectors (or investors) are trying to get them and hold on to them a few years because they are scarser already. I have bought like 800+ Luxembourg stamps 2 months ago and am still planning to do a video on it. I bought in bulk and hope to find some to add to my collection. I will definitly have duplicates. If you have some catalogue numbers and if you collect used, then I can see what I can provide you with if you like. You don't have to have Michel numbers (which I use), Scott or any number I can look up on Colnect will do. Think about it :-) Thanks for replying!

    IN the United States one way to get stamps affordably is to get the Stamp Commemorative albums produced by the USPS. Most are under $50 if you get those before about 2004/2005. After that the prices climb as the initial price of the albums has increased (although the mark-up tends to be high and you are better off buying panes and stamp individually for stamps after 2004/5). I especially like getting from about 1979 till about 1992 the Definitive and Postal stationery albums the USPS put out on and off. You never know what you may get. Plus you have a nice coffee table book after you transfer the stamps to your collection - or you can mount the stamps in the book and keep everything in a cool, dark, dry place for long-term storage.
    Another tip for US stamps is for those stamps that you maybe don't want a pane of 20 or a coil of 35 or more, you can get a First Day Cover. I find FDC's great for getting a stamp in its say booklet and coil format so that I spend far less than if I purchased multiple stamps in these formats because all you could get is a pane of 20 or at minimum a coil roll of 37 or 25.
    A final tip is to join a postcard exchange group as it is a great way to use excess stamps you may have and get some cool stamps from around the world

    • @chrislovesstamps
      @chrislovesstamps  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Chris. Sorry for replying this late. Some very good suggestions! I love coffee table books. I don't have a place to display it properly though. But how something is displayed is pretty important to me.
      I don't like FDC's much. They never attracted me, I find them to extraverted and distracting from the actual stamp. No offense, that is just me. I also do not like the flood of 'FDC' stamps that are on the market. A lot of FDC's are not worth a lot over here, from various countries, and then they get soaked off from the paper and sold as used stamps. Most of these FDC's were never really used, so in my opinion it is not a legitimate stamp and are almost on par with CTO's. Again, no offense, it is a good way to get stamps.
      Really good tip about exchanging postcards. I know you don't mean postcrossing, but postcrossing can get you in contact with collectors also.
      Thanks for the comment, and for watching!

    Great video, Chris, and I really like this series so much. Thanks! Very natural and hands on. The slide show at the end also show the stamps excellently. Naturally I 😍the bird stamps, and the berry stamps. We have a similar local online bidding and buying platform - Trademe, and I also got my best buys on that. Marktplaats seems to be an excellent place for buying stamps. Thanks for showing us. I am looking forward to you getting a stock book and starting to sort and putting the lot of Norwegian stamps in it.

    • @chrislovesstamps
      @chrislovesstamps  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi Charnie. On Trademe, can you also buy per stamp? Or only (bigger) lots? Marktplaats is pretty nice, yes. I wondered if other countries have something similar. I reckoned they would have. If they don't, then this 10 euro/month series is easier in The Netherlands than in other places. I am really excited where it goes. On for example my Luxembourg collection I went pretty fast in acquiring stamps. Now I need to be strategic and also trying to think what a new/beginner collector knows or doesn't know, which is pretty hard. You can't really undo what you know :-) Thanks for replying and watching!
