Sold my Explorer 39. It was too much of a scratch magnet for an everyday watch. I now wear an Omega Seamaster 300 professional as my new daily wearer. Could not be happier.
People are way too afraid of smaller watches... traditionally watches for men were averaging 36mm. That is small for us now, but I guarantee you, it looks fine. I have a 7.5-inch wrist, and I am very happy with it. And for those who care much of what others say, I have asked a few people, and they say it looks fine and classic.
Just got mine yesterday had 3 39mm and never got really on board with the size. I have 19cm wrist and yes this one it's a bit small (like my wife always says) but you get used to it! I love it.
Same size wrists as you and I own the 39mm but I just don't love it. The 36mm is perfect. I have been hoping for years that Rolex would go back to 36mm. I couldn't believe it when they released it.
Great review. Personally, I like the Explorer upstairs vs. downstairs but do agree that the minute hand should be bigger. As an owner of the 1016, wait for the call as the sapphire crystal, brighter lume, and water resistance will mean I always have on in the wrist. Happy, too, btw, about the anti reflective coating under the crystal and, frankly, a sturdier, less jangly bracelet with easy link extensions.
Absolutely agree with your criticism. Too much taper in the bracelet particularly. Makes it very obvious they're trying for a unisex market. That said, I'm on the waitlist as I like a 36 field watch.

I wear a 36mm watch every day. It's a Sea-gull day date datejust look alike with a 2628 automatic movement on it's original president style signed bracelet, it has a signed crown and I love it. I bought it for £60 two years ago. I have a seven and a quarter inch wrist size. I would love this explorer but I can't afford it.
Like you, I had the 39mm version and came to the same conclusions you did. I bought the new 36mm model last week and am much happier with it. My only gripe is the 19mm lug width.
Good review, per usual. The Explorer always has been, and most likely will be, my favorite watch. I have a 114270 and a 214270 and I like both of them for different reasons. This new model looks like it’s a nice mix of the 114270 and 214270. Im not sure I’ll grab one (even if I could) but I’m happy to see Rolex go back to 36mm.
I owned the older version of this watch. Loved the design, but sold it because I just couldn't stand how small it was. I would definitely buy an Explorer II, but I hate Rolex's business practices.
I would like to get two tone explorer. The biggest advantage is that this watch was released in 2021 which is my son’s birth year. I can see myself wearing it while Jeeping, get dirty, muddy and scratched. It will add a lot of characters to the watch. Never polish it, and later pass it to my son. It will create a lot of memories for us doing things together 🖐
@@JustBlueFish yes, but change up the proportions a bit, so the dial doesn’t look so spaced out and it’s bezel so wide…37/38mm might be the sweet spot.
And you were right, they introduced a 40mm version. By the way, the new Explorer 36 has the measurements of a vintage (1980s) AirKing. Quite interesting. The main big difference is that there is so much more going on on the dial now. The AirKing has very slim indices and hands and the text is much finer. - The name of the watch usually sits at the bottom half of the dial, but on the 36 I don’t think there is enough space. While there is enough on the 40, they probably did not want to make the two watches as aligned as possible in terms of design. That might also be reason why the 40 was not given the crown guard case.
There is something satisfying about the simplicity .i have the new 41mil op in black which looks very similar . I measure it at around 39mm which is perfect for my 7 1/2 inch wrist . I think this probably suits the smaller wrist guys just fine ..
I think the bracelet is a good size for the 36mm case. Proportions are good 19mm down to 14mm. Well compare that to the Omega Speedmaster, 40mm case with a 20mm bracelet that tapers down to 15, and that feels great to me.
Great watch...i find it wears more like a 35 than a 36 if that makes any sense. Too small for me and folks with wrists over 7 inches imho. I still prefer the 39 mkii
214270 mark ll is the best Explorer to date. The new 35 1/2 mm version is just simply too small unless you have very, very small wrists. I’m by no means a fan of large watches. But this new Explorer really does look like a ladies watch in person.
Great review. I’ve been wearing mine for a little more than a month and it is the most comfortable and lowest profile Rolex I Own. Only other enthusiasts know what it is. I hate to tell you this but it makes a KILLER combo with a Submariner! Gives 2 totally different looks and feels.
I own the 114270, current 36mm OP and the new 124270. Love the new Explorer. Finally they’ve corrected the 20mm bracelet on their 36mm models. The 20mm bracelet looks perfect on the 5 series 40mm models. Much to wide for a 36mm watch. Funny, cause no one ever complained about the blackbay 36 or Omega AT 38 having a 19mm lug width. Typical Rolex fans looking to complain about something, can’t even notice an improvement when it’s in front of them.
I feel like the new 19mm and 21mm lug widths by Rolex not only look better proportionally but will hopefully increase the demand for aftermarket straps in this size, win win for all!
Agree about the 5mm EasyLink. It should only really be 2-3mm. Its the only thing that lets Rolex bracelets down. They are otherwise perfection. Draping beautifully with a beautiful taper and gorgeous clasps that feel super secure.
Great review. I agree on your points about the better dial proportions with this model and the width of the minute hand. The oyster case generally wears larger than its dimensions and I always felt the 39mm case was too large for me.
Hoping to get one of these and that many will be put off by the 35.5mm case and 19mm lugs. That’s the same size bracelet and taper on my 34mm Air King.
Nice review. The bracelet is actually perfect and extremely comfortable due to the tapering toward the buckle. I am not quite sure how making that wider would make it a better wrist presence.
“Better” is subjective of course. But it would make it feel a hair larger give “more” presence. Which might be good considering so many feel the watch is too small.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews , I felt the same way until I tried it on. It is supposed to be conservatively sized and it doesn't seem small on my 7 and 1/4 inch wrist. I wouldn't have minded a 39mm but 36mm fits perfectly. Also due to it's smaller size I feel it's not in the way of my day to day activities.
One thing I really think that Rolex overall does not have correctly sized on their watches is their hands. I think they are all too small for the newer larger sizes. They seem lost in their dials to me I used to own this watch the OG 36mm and it was def a fine piece. I prefer a larger watch these days so I can see them better to be honest. Great review.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that the case diameter is 36.2mm and that is with a precise calipher. Bezel is slightly smaller, on the 35-number, can't remember that one precicely. Nice video👍😄
I own this one as well as the 214270 and completely agree re the sizing. Personally I would love a 37mm case with 20mm lugs, but that would sit conveniently in the middle of a 36 and 39mm, and result in most people being slightly dissatisfied on either side. As Rolex have now proven they are not afraid to diversify the Explorer line, I do think they will release a larger option in future, though this would likely be a 41mm and use the OP case. I also feel the 12mm thickness is out of proportion with a 36mm diameter. A minor complaint, and a worthy price for 100m WR. Great review. I agree with all your other points😉👍
Really good review. This proves that smaller diameter watches with larger lug-to-lug span are better proportioned and look better on any wrist than stumpy large diameter versions. On the latter ones, lug to lug distance need to be shortened not to ovehang the wrist, what actually ruines good proportions.
I would not let the 19mm lug width to deter me from getting a watch that I like. The following watches in my current collection all have the dreaded 19mm lug-width, interestingly enough, I seem to love these timepieces more and more as time goes by: (1) 1967 Seiko Lord Marvel (2) 1988 Tudor Prince Oysterdate (Lucky find - I picked it up as an NOS two years ago) (3) 2013 Tissot LeLocle (4) 2020 Yema Flygraf Pilot IMHO, upsizing to 20mm lug-width would "ruin" the balance of the overall design altogether.
Excellent review and great photography. I can see that selecting a watch is going to be difficult for you!! I am building up quite a head of steam to own the new Explorer - but that is the easy part.
Watch enthusiast wish Rolex would one day make a 36mm Explorer, but in the back of their minds this would never come true the way Rolex is going. Now that Rolex made the 36mm, a lot of reviews saying it’s a little too small for most wrist sizes. Maybe it’s should had been a 37mm! Could had been a perfect watch. Another wish, just maybe…
@@JustBlueFish I also thought this, but then I thought I could always have the top of the lugs and polished centrelinks of the bracelet brushed by a jeweller. Now it's an even harder decision.
The Explorer was always a strap monster. Owners loved the versatility. That made the older bracelet issues less of an issue as they didn't use it so often. The latest version has two big issues. Firstly its 19mm as you mentioned and secondly its a tight space between the bars and case so its almost impossible to fit even a nato strap. Even worse is that if you do remove the bracelet then it reveals the large mounting holes for the new end links and makes the watch look odd on a strap.
I have the old 36mm 2005 model and I tried the other day the new 36mm. I have to say the old one wears much better on my 6.5 inch wrist. The new one wears smaller, especially, due to the 19mm bracelet and the extrem taper!
I actually think it's a boring plain watch. And 36mm is too small for most men. Much prefer the datejust, as the fluted bezel is just a classy look. Although again the 36mm datejust is too small for big guys , so it's the 41mm version for me . Great vid as always guy , just not my thing.
I love that they have gone back to the "Explorer text'' at top of the dial. Just like the original 36 sizes were. Makes me love my 114270 all the more now. So glad I chose it over the 39 still to this day. I toiled over the size for months. If I had gone with the 39 a few yrs ago now I would be wanting this new version. But ... I'm all set!
A very well balanced review Guy, I was at the AD yesterday talking about this exact watch but without seeing it in person I can't comment on the size but you are absolutely correct the proportions are much better on this reference. I like that it does not have the date along with the Rolex signature cyclops as it keeps the dial clean. At the moment I could not justify this model as I already have the OP 41 that just works perfectly on my wrist. Let's see if or when Rolex release the larger model.
I have a slightly smaller wrist then you, but feel that this watch is too small for me. It it were a 38 mm watch with 20 me lug width I would run to the AD to buy one.
Been looking forward to this review Guy. Very well done. Yes there are some issues, but I'm used to my F91W casio which has a very similar width bracelet, so this Explorer will be great. I'll need time to get one, but the search is over I think...(I was also thinking the new Speedy, the OP 36, Airking..but as a first Rolex I think that this will be the perfect one. No in all of the watches with the 3200 series movements, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. It was happening on that 39mm Explorer and it's also something that happens with my Rolex Submariner 116610LN. So they must have changed that with the new updates.
It’s great but would’ve been better if it was under 35mm with thinner bracelet and a thinner watch altogether that said it’s much better than the previous 39mm which I own.

I remember well your Explorer 39mm review and the struggle you had with the fit and the eventual swap for the Submariner loosing a grand in the process. It was the first video I saw on your channel. I would need to try it on but as my wrist is slightly bigger It may well look a touch too small, although the 39mm which I love, actually as you say looks on the big side on my wrist. 37mm anyone? And yes make it with a 20mm bracelet..👌 of course there is no pleasing everyone 👍
I think Rolex, from their ivory towers, never expect anyone to change their straps/bracelets 🙄. Hence, they have zero qualms using a 19mm bracelet to help finetune proportions and achieve ratios that we somehow intangibly prefer. I happen to think the odd 21mm and 19mm bracelets are genius moves on their part for aesthetic balance and proportions, even if we hate the loss of strap versatility. They help the respective watch heads seem visually smaller for one that has grown (Sub) and larger for the one that has shrunk (Explorer).
I have the 39mm MK1. The numbers are solid white gold with no lume. Proportionally, It’s off. It does not bother me that much but it does leave me a little dissatisfied. The second version MK2 has hands that were better and had lume on all the numbers. As for the new Explorer it’s actually smaller than 36. But the consensus.
I saw the two-tone version of this watch at a Rolex AD recently…still can’t decide if I liked that one or not 🤔 this traditional all steel version I definitely do like, my only big caveat being the size…it might be a tad too small, while its predecessor was too big 🤷♂️
My only 36mm watch is the marathon GSAR medium. While at first it seemed very small and unbecoming on my wrist. However, after two or three days and plenty of glances of reflections in windows and mirrors; believe me when I say, you get used to and it looks so good! My 39mm Damasko looks like a dinner plate and it large as I would ever go.

No watch is going to be perfect unless you design one for yourself with all the specifications that you want. These are off the shelf watches made for a mass-market. Over my years of collecting I chuckled to myself about the obsession over the size of the watch and the bracelet and the hands and everything else that the watch is made up of, every watch is a compromise. I own 34 to 44 millimeter watches and I can pull them all off, I have a 7.25 in. wrist. My sweet spot is 38 to 46 millimeters. But I guess when you spend that much for a single watch you want it to be perfect.
rolex is expensive nowadays, i paid 5.2k for my op36 4 years ago, tax included. would paying ~8k for this explorer worth it? it certainly retains its value well, and has 'improved' movement, not sure about this.
Hello Guy. I got a 39 model about the time you got yours. I have had it into Rolex twice for accuracy issues. It's never been repaired, as it is about 4-6s fast per day. I have the 39 White OP with similar mvmnt, and it also is subpar in accuracy. Perhaps the newer calibre in the new Explorer is more accurate? Nice video! Randy-IL
Every time I see that watch being pushed by a CZcamsr I get a flash back to Hans and Franz pump you up! (a SNL thing by Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon). This watch is pee wee Herman sized. Pee wee was pumping up in a different way when he got in trouble with the law. It would have kept the watch well wound….if he used that hand.

i'd prefer 18mm not 20 lug width. 20mm is even too wide for a 38mm watch imo. all rolex lugs are too broadly spaced and dominate the case too much for me. i really like the new small sized pink OPs, but the lugs are huge compared to the watch head.
I like a 20mm bracelet, but everyone has their own tastes. Would be nice if you could just custom order the exact dimensions you want from the manufacturer. That would be cool.

Tried this on recently and its way too small, I have 6.5 inch wrists. It felt cheap as well, not worth the retail price imo, shame as the explorer is the only Rolex I really wanted to own.
everything about this watch is perfect except for the size of the text. its just too big for a dial real restate in 36. i am fine with explorer at the top but would really prefer without the "oyster perpetual".

I'd say it would work for any sized wrist from 7" and below. But personal taste being a factor I can understand if you don't like the size.

I just got this and love it. Disappears on the wrist. I think they’ll release a 41 in a year or 2 but I prefer it at 36mm with the tapered bracelet.

It truly baffles me as to why not just add the 36mm and keep the 39mm option available to suit most people's needs.

19 mm straps aren't absolutely no problem to find...especially higher end makers have 19 mm options in many cases.

There’s no excuse for Rolex not to fit a smaller glide look clasp given Tudor just released the new 58 Bronze with T fit clasp.
Gridlock makes the clasp huge. Why would you even need that much adjustment for a watch like this?
Really wish they kept a 39. I have big wrists so the 39 fits like a 36 would on most people.

Hoping to get one of these and that many will be put off by the 35.5mm case and 19mm lugs. That’s the same size bracelet and taper on my 34mm Air King.

Nice review. The bracelet is actually perfect and extremely comfortable due to the tapering toward the buckle. I am not quite sure how making that wider would make it a better wrist presence.
“Better” is subjective of course. But it would make it feel a hair larger give “more” presence. Which might be good considering so many feel the watch is too small.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews , I felt the same way until I tried it on. It is supposed to be conservatively sized and it doesn't seem small on my 7 and 1/4 inch wrist. I wouldn't have minded a 39mm but 36mm fits perfectly. Also due to it's smaller size I feel it's not in the way of my day to day activities.
@@mraymanTube this is a ladies sized watch at just over 35mm. Must look absolutely ridiculous on a 7 1/4 in wrist.

19mm is common for grand seiko fans 😬 delugs has a pretty good selection.
Even though (Grand) Seiko rules, odd lug widths are gross
One thing I really think that Rolex overall does not have correctly sized on their watches is their hands. I think they are all too small for the newer larger sizes. They seem lost in their dials to me I used to own this watch the OG 36mm and it was def a fine piece. I prefer a larger watch these days so I can see them better to be honest. Great review.
Ya I felt like the hour hand on this was a hair too thin. Looks fine on camera but in person it’s just a little off to my eye.

Hey, just wanted to let you know that the case diameter is 36.2mm and that is with a precise calipher. Bezel is slightly smaller, on the 35-number, can't remember that one precicely.

I own this one as well as the 214270 and completely agree re the sizing. Personally I would love a 37mm case with 20mm lugs, but that would sit conveniently in the middle of a 36 and 39mm, and result in most people being slightly dissatisfied on either side. As Rolex have now proven they are not afraid to diversify the Explorer line, I do think they will release a larger option in future, though this would likely be a 41mm and use the OP case. I also feel the 12mm thickness is out of proportion with a 36mm diameter. A minor complaint, and a worthy price for 100m WR. Great review. I agree with all your other points😉👍

Really good review. This proves that smaller diameter watches with larger lug-to-lug span are better proportioned and look better on any wrist than stumpy large diameter versions. On the latter ones, lug to lug distance need to be shortened not to ovehang the wrist, what actually ruines good proportions.
I would not let the 19mm lug width to deter me from getting a watch that I like. The following watches in my current collection all have the dreaded 19mm lug-width, interestingly enough, I seem to love these timepieces more and more as time goes by:
(1) 1967 Seiko Lord Marvel
(2) 1988 Tudor Prince Oysterdate (Lucky find - I picked it up as an NOS two years ago)
(3) 2013 Tissot LeLocle
(4) 2020 Yema Flygraf Pilot
IMHO, upsizing to 20mm lug-width would "ruin" the balance of the overall design altogether.
Excellent review and great photography. I can see that selecting a watch is going to be difficult for you!! I am building up quite a head of steam to own the new Explorer - but that is the easy part.

Watch enthusiast wish Rolex would one day make a 36mm Explorer, but in the back of their minds this would never come true the way Rolex is going. Now that Rolex made the 36mm, a lot of reviews saying it’s a little too small for most wrist sizes. Maybe it’s should had been a 37mm! Could had been a perfect watch. Another wish, just maybe…

Hmmmm… I’d say the Explorer. The DJ case is completely high polished and I personally don’t hate it but I prefer the brushed surfaces on these.
@@JustBlueFish I also thought this, but then I thought I could always have the top of the lugs and polished centrelinks of the bracelet brushed by a jeweller. Now it's an even harder decision.
The Explorer was always a strap monster. Owners loved the versatility. That made the older bracelet issues less of an issue as they didn't use it so often.
The latest version has two big issues. Firstly its 19mm as you mentioned and secondly its a tight space between the bars and case so its almost impossible to fit even a nato strap. Even worse is that if you do remove the bracelet then it reveals the large mounting holes for the new end links and makes the watch look odd on a strap.

I have the old 36mm 2005 model and I tried the other day the new 36mm. I have to say the old one wears much better on my 6.5 inch wrist. The new one wears smaller, especially, due to the 19mm bracelet and the extrem taper!
Yeah, it's unfortunate the way they proportioned the new 36mm it's not right.

I actually think it's a boring plain watch. And 36mm is too small for most men. Much prefer the datejust, as the fluted bezel is just a classy look. Although again the 36mm datejust is too small for big guys , so it's the 41mm version for me . Great vid as always guy , just not my thing.

I love that they have gone back to the "Explorer text'' at top of the dial. Just like the original 36 sizes were. Makes me love my 114270 all the more now. So glad I chose it over the 39 still to this day. I toiled over the size for months. If I had gone with the 39 a few yrs ago now I would be wanting this new version. But ... I'm all set!

A very well balanced review Guy, I was at the AD yesterday talking about this exact watch but without seeing it in person I can't comment on the size but you are absolutely correct the proportions are much better on this reference. I like that it does not have the date along with the Rolex signature cyclops as it keeps the dial clean. At the moment I could not justify this model as I already have the OP 41 that just works perfectly on my wrist. Let's see if or when Rolex release the larger model.
Ya if you have an OP41 and like that size this might not be up your ally. But if you get a chance check it out. Maybe it’ll surprise you.

It’s definitely going to be smaller than most people prefer. Like I said in the video. It’s definitely not the right watch for everyone.
Been looking forward to this review Guy. Very well done. Yes there are some issues, but I'm used to my F91W casio which has a very similar width bracelet, so this Explorer will be great. I'll need time to get one, but the search is over I think...(I was also thinking the new Speedy, the OP 36, Airking..but as a first Rolex I think that this will be the perfect one. No in all of the watches with the 3200 series movements, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. It was happening on that 39mm Explorer and it's also something that happens with my Rolex Submariner 116610LN. So they must have changed that with the new updates.

It’s great but would’ve been better if it was under 35mm with thinner bracelet and a thinner watch altogether that said it’s much better than the previous 39mm which I own.

I remember well your Explorer 39mm review and the struggle you had with the fit and the eventual swap for the Submariner loosing a grand in the process. It was the first video I saw on your channel. I would need to try it on but as my wrist is slightly bigger It may well look a touch too small, although the 39mm which I love, actually as you say looks on the big side on my wrist. 37mm anyone? And yes make it with a 20mm bracelet..👌 of course there is no pleasing everyone 👍

I think Rolex, from their ivory towers, never expect anyone to change their straps/bracelets 🙄. Hence, they have zero qualms using a 19mm bracelet to help finetune proportions and achieve ratios that we somehow intangibly prefer. I happen to think the odd 21mm and 19mm bracelets are genius moves on their part for aesthetic balance and proportions, even if we hate the loss of strap versatility. They help the respective watch heads seem visually smaller for one that has grown (Sub) and larger for the one that has shrunk (Explorer).

I have the 39mm MK1. The numbers are solid white gold with no lume. Proportionally, It’s off. It does not bother me that much but it does leave me a little dissatisfied. The second version MK2 has hands that were better and had lume on all the numbers. As for the new Explorer it’s actually smaller than 36. But the consensus.
They should make a 38mm and a 40mm version. I bet they’d sell more.
I saw the two-tone version of this watch at a Rolex AD recently…still can’t decide if I liked that one or not 🤔 this traditional all steel version I definitely do like, my only big caveat being the size…it might be a tad too small, while its predecessor was too big 🤷♂️

My only 36mm watch is the marathon GSAR medium. While at first it seemed very small and unbecoming on my wrist. However, after two or three days and plenty of glances of reflections in windows and mirrors; believe me when I say, you get used to and it looks so good! My 39mm Damasko looks like a dinner plate and it large as I would ever go.

No watch is going to be perfect unless you design one for yourself with all the specifications that you want. These are off the shelf watches made for a mass-market. Over my years of collecting I chuckled to myself about the obsession over the size of the watch and the bracelet and the hands and everything else that the watch is made up of, every watch is a compromise. I own 34 to 44 millimeter watches and I can pull them all off, I have a 7.25 in. wrist. My sweet spot is 38 to 46 millimeters. But I guess when you spend that much for a single watch you want it to be perfect.

rolex is expensive nowadays, i paid 5.2k for my op36 4 years ago, tax included. would paying ~8k for this explorer worth it? it certainly retains its value well, and has 'improved' movement, not sure about this.
It's 35.3mm and very dainty, hands are way too thin and positioning of the word Explorer throws the dial out of balance.
Hello Guy. I got a 39 model about the time you got yours. I have had it into Rolex twice for accuracy issues. It's never been repaired, as it is about 4-6s fast per day. I have the 39 White OP with similar mvmnt, and it also is subpar in accuracy. Perhaps the newer calibre in the new Explorer is more accurate?

Every time I see that watch being pushed by a CZcamsr I get a flash back to Hans and Franz pump you up! (a SNL thing by Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon). This watch is pee wee Herman sized. Pee wee was pumping up in a different way when he got in trouble with the law. It would have kept the watch well wound….if he used that hand.

nice vid thanks for sharing, I never liked the previous models and now this one is too small for me I find the markers too thick and the smooth bezel a scratch magnet.I'd say go for a datejust 36.
i'd prefer 18mm not 20 lug width. 20mm is even too wide for a 38mm watch imo. all rolex lugs are too broadly spaced and dominate the case too much for me. i really like the new small sized pink OPs, but the lugs are huge compared to the watch head.
I like a 20mm bracelet, but everyone has their own tastes. Would be nice if you could just custom order the exact dimensions you want from the manufacturer. That would be cool.
Totally agree. Lug width should follow a two-to-one proportion. 40mm case with 20mm lug. 38/19, 36/18. They’ll never get it right, though.

Tried this on recently and its way too small, I have 6.5 inch wrists. It felt cheap as well, not worth the retail price imo, shame as the explorer is the only Rolex I really wanted to own.

everything about this watch is perfect except for the size of the text. its just too big for a dial real restate in 36. i am fine with explorer at the top but would really prefer without the "oyster perpetual".
