20mm bracelet on the 36 iterations of explorer never looked right to me, this looks perfect, the curve down from the case to 19mm works perfectly and I agree it’s the best looking Explorer ever.
I picked up both the 39 and 36mm versions this year. Both have their pros and cons. But I think the move down to 36 was the right one for Rolex and I'm glad to see people appreciating it as it deserves. Great video
@@watchyourstyle I wear the 39mm myself. My gf wears the 36mm. It's hard to downsize after wearing the 39mm. But if you start off with a 36, no need to change as it's a great size in itself

Rolex has never seemed at peace with the large watch trend. Their decision to reduce this model back to 36mm could signal that they see some long term validity in the recent trend towards smaller watches. Perhaps with their market authority they hope to force some validity onto the trend with this change. It could also be that the design of this iconic three-hander with it’s fixed-bezel lent itself to the smaller size in which it was originally designed. This gave them an opportunity to build a bit more size range back into the professional line. As a guy with a smaller wrists I am glad they gave us back this option. Whatever the motivations.
Great points! I’m hoping for a move back to 40mm / 20mm lugs submariner and a 40mm explorer II in the future! Would make those pieces wear so much better

Exact same sentiment. Just purchased this watch and awaiting its delivery. I have a smaller wrist size, 16.5 to 16.75. Of my watches and the majority micro brand's. Its the mid size watches that I find myself wearing and enjoying on the wrist. Think (off the top) my biggest is a 42mm Steinhart case. I can carry it off but in the end found it to big (the watch is a gorgeous vintage style homage) but my wrist size is to small. Even 41mm case is to big. My sweet spot for cases is around min-34, ideal-36-and max 39mm. Good or bad learned through a lot of trial and error. Lastly the noted number of factors of, dial size, bezel, crystal, bracelet, etc. But long short happy to "at least" now have these sizes as an option.
I have the new explorer and 36mm is the perfect size for this watch. Feels great on wrist. I've never been into larger watches, with 40mm being my upper limit. It's great to see watch makers reducing the diameter of their watches and coming back to classic proportions.
Wonderful review. I have been almost daily wearing the old 114270 which I bought early this year without knowing Rolex would return to 36 case size. The smaller Explorer wears comfortably and light. Yes it’s a small watch but it’s still masculine and is super versatile. I want to upgrade to the 124270 but with how Rolex is now, it’s likely it’ll take a while lol
Fantastic review, great observations, The 36 mm is the one for me… The compactness of the dial just worked the whole thing just seems to come together perfectly. Absolutely loved this review beautifully edited, some really good points covered, extremely slick work. I am a fan❤️
Nice vid thanks. For your wrist size the 36mm is the right size not to mention the proportions on the dial with the slim bezel. I noticed you tend to wear the larger watch sizes lower on your wrist far too close to your hand. That position may be fine when having a smaller wrist as its curve makes it appear to be larger, but its not comfortable over time nor correct as it limits natural wrist movement.
Rolex made the correct move bringing the Explorer back to its classic, iconic and historic 36mm case size. I have one on order with my AD and am looking forward to receiving it.
Great review and I fully agree that the 36mm Rolex is the perfect size for most people. I bought 2 tt DJs, this 36 mm explorer , a 36 mm Cartier Santos in 2021 and a 36mm SS DJ in 2022 and I must say that I've totally converted to that size after wearing and owning all the hyped 40mm Rolexes including your Batman. Legibility is not worse than a 40mm but wearability is so much more comfortable and unnoticeable. I believe Rolex and eventually Patek and other brands will revert to this classic size. Keep up the videos.
36 is an amazing size! I wear it on a rubber strap currently and I barely even notice it’s there. So incredibly comfortable. Let’s hope the downsizing trend continues! Thanks for stopping by the channel and for the kind words! 🙏
After owning a 124270 for the last 1.5 months, it makes my OP36 (116000) seem bloated for reasons you mentioned in this video. The 20mm bracelet, 18mm clasp, and “super case” of my 116000 makes me appreciate what Rolex did with the 124270 immensely. If the 116000 didn’t have sentimental value, it’d be gone.
I felt exactly the same on the 214270, the top heaviness. Thats why i sold it. It felt never really right on the wrist. Hopefully i can also wear the 124270 soon. Thanks for the small review!
I actually saw my banker wearing his 114270 today. Its lovely, but the new bracelet width and taper helps round out this watches versatility, by being more at home in more elegant settings. I'd say if those times where you want elegance are seldom or you have another watch for that, the 114270 is a slightly more masculine look.
I just got this model and damn its awesome. I got mine new from an AD out of luck and knowing the right people. I've been kind of apprehensive to wear it all the time, but its the most comfy watch I own. This is truly the one watch to rule them all. The weird thing is, I want another one, for back up when I get it serviced. lol
Just got one of theses, and I don't think I'll get another watch larger than 36. Actually also got a 34 mm Oyster from 1953. It looked so small at first but now I love it
I really love my 124270. The size is spot on and I much prefer the glossy dial over the matte of the 214270. Here is hoping the Explorer II is the next to revert to its classic size so I can pick up my second Rolex
The case measures 35.5mm. It has identical size and proportions to a 1980s AirKing. All tried and tested. Moving the Explorer logo back to the top made sense as otherwise it would have been different between sizes (40mm). If there had just been one size, then Explorer at the bottom of the dial would have been in line with how it’s done on Professional models.
Really love the 36mm size, used to be normal even somewhat large back in the days. Would happily trade my Milgauss Z Blue for this one - mainly for the better proportions.

No doubt that this new explorer is a hit. I just recently purchased the TT version. However I am debating between SS and TT, which is the best to keep. There is so much packed into this small package.
Agree about the size. So many look like Flava Flave, except with the clock on their wrist instead of their necks. Agree, too, about the location of “Explorer,” if nothing else, as a nod to the 1016.
Great review, and I fully agree. The 39 was never for me, the 40 even less so, but this one hits the spot. The minute I laid eyes and hands on it, I knew I had to get it. No regrets! The dimensions are perfect. Case and lugs of course, but even the dainty sounding 19 to 14mm tapered bracelet and 16mm clasp in real life have presence and solidity. I never got the appeal of ever bulkier and dishier wristwatches to begin with, and shun most of them, with a few notable exceptions perhaps. Instead, this Explorer re-confirms the beauty of proper design and classic dimensioning. Truly a great watch!
Nice video and appreciate your thoughts and logic. I have disagree about the layout of the dial. I prefer “Explorer” at the bottom of the dial. To me, it’s just more balanced that way. I still prefer 39mm as I feel that is the perfect size. However, I have yet to see the 36mm watch. All the best and happy holidays.
Thanks for your support and your perspective! I definitely do believe the 39mm has its merits. Sometimes I miss that added wrist presence and wider bracelet. Have an amazing holiday! Take care.
I second, I think the 39mm mark 2 is the perfect watch. I tried on the new 36mm at an ad (exhibition only) and it was just too small, my ad even agreed. I hope this drives down the price of the 39mm so I can buy 😉
Happy to see you out there hiking with that bad boy like it’s intended!! I just got an OP 41 which is basically an explorer if your looking at the specs so I’ll be adventuring in mine but I’d love to add an explorer II into my collection at some point
Thank you! Explorer is the best adventure companion. Just picked up an explorer II. Rolex makes some incredible watches. Enjoy your awesome pieces in good health!
The one Rolex I seriously considered buying. But after a 3-year hunt, I came up empty-handed. Prices on the gray market are ridiculous and I would not pay more than MSRP. Given the ever-increasing hype, I had to give up the search. This version is fantastic and though I will not resume the search, it represents the most refined version of the Explorer.
Don’t give up! I called every AD in my area and lucked out. I didn’t have a prior purchase history and I just happened to be at the top of their call list. Miracles do happen!
👌 Well presented, thanks..👍 Have the 39 waiting for the 36.. Good step with the AR coating internally, but still too reflective..not quite perfect..imho..
Nice video!!! Love watching your watch journey!!! The explorer 36 is the purest form of a watch. Time only, classically sized, amazing specs…less is more when it comes to this watch….a true gem! A 1 and done piece, similar to the sub no date (albeit in a diver format). If I had to create a 5 watch collection it would be: Sub no date (diver) Explorer 36 (GADA) Santos medium (formal GADA) Gshock square 1st watch that started it all or at least one of great sentimental value
The comparison between your OP36 was very surprising. Is the new explorer really that much smaller compared the the OP 36? What would you choose between the batman and the 36 explorer?
removing that mercedes hour hand could really modernize it and possibly make it look less fancy ...i dont understand that rolex engraving around the dial is looks a bit much for a tool watch
I would like to see Rolex continue to circle back towards the 1016. Rolex, my life expectancy is around 2060😂; can you also swing the Explorer 2 line back towards the 1655?
Hey my friend nice review ! How do you feel a year later about your 124270? Do you still have the same opinion and the same love for it ? Just traded yesterday my 114270 plus few cash for the new 124270. My initial observation is that there is an optical illusion about the new being tiny bit smaller because of 19mm to 14mm taper . Otherwise the face on its own looks tiny bigger than the older because of the bolder numbers and bigger bezel . I have same wrist size like yours and I owned watches as small as 35 up to panerai 42 and Rolex seadeweller. When I first bought my 114270 never ever felt wrong or small while for example my DJ36 had times that doesn’t look that right . My initiall concern so far and I hope I’ll get over it is that the taper makes it from time to time to feel small . Everyone else I’ve asked though tells me on my wrist looks perfect neither small or on the feminine side just perfect . Initial thoughts is that 90% compare to the older reference is superior but when it comes to lug and taper, for now loosing points . If it was 20 lug taper to 15 would be the best Rolex ever made. For the 39mm tried many times and while I could buy it retail was always feeling wrong .. too much dial.. for this kind of watch at this size I would look for other better or cheaper options .. I would like your updated thoughts please !!!
Hi friend! Thanks for your comment and support. The 124270 is a cracking watch. I do agree with your points about the 35mm diameter and 19mm lugs being a bit more on the modest size. However, when I wear the watch, it disappears on wrist. It’s incredibly light and comfortable. I’ve also found that putting the watch on a strap makes the lugs look wider and more balanced to the watch head. That being said I recently had the opportunity to pick up the exp40 and actually gave my 124270 to my father. I wish Rolex revived the 114270 but with modern touches like lumed Arabic numerals. That was my favorite explorer reference. I have found myself gravitating towards the mk2 and exp40 in terms of sizing in the post-114270 era, but that is just my personal taste. You really can’t go wrong with any Explorer, it’s a dang near perfect watch, and I’m glad Rolex continues to make this model as faithful to the original as they can. Cheers and I hope this helps!
Great review. Very understated watch 👌 Would make a great versatile daily watch as you say. Out of the steel Submariner and steel GMT (black/blue or blue/red) which would you choose? I have the Daytona which I have been using daily but looking to add an Explorer 36mm but also either a Sub or a GMT….hard call. Many thanks in advance
I have a 39mm 2015 version and aquired this new 36mm model yesterday I think it’s almost perfect but would be happier if the clasp could be a bit thinner
There is no good reason for a 34.9mm case with 10bar resistance to be 11.6mm thick. The height to width proportion just kills it for me. I mean, not to put too fine a point on it, but that's thicker than an OP 39, and thicker than every Yachtmaster 41 reference. A Patek Aquanaut? 40mm case, 12 bar, and 8mm thickness, and that's with an exhibition caseback. If Rolex really is making an attempt to downsize its case sizes, it needs to take a hard look at how unnecessarily thick its offerings are.
compared the new explorer to my 16610 sub and noticed i could hear/feel the movement wind when lightly shaken. with the sub it's quiet. is this normal? is it due to the different movements or case size/build? appreciate any help.
Hi! Yes, it’s normal on the new 32xx series of movements. I wish it was quieter too, but it’s a worthwhile trade off for a superior movement with longer power reserve. I believe it may have to do with the weight of the rotor, making it more efficient and therefore lighter (thinking miyota here), but that’s just a theory. Hope this helps!
Perfection? Say it ain't so! Once you adjust to the size, Speedys and Subs appear comically large. Mine hasn't left my (7.25") wrist in 6 weeks. GADA? Definitely. One and done? Exit? Perhaps.
Love your videos- this is the most boring watch ever made by Rolex imo, people over hyper it! It's time only there's nothing special about it. The "PURISTS" Are boring clowns lol Datejust imo is the best undervalued Rolex, it does everything this watch does plus date, but it looks stunning in every angle and so many dials and colours/configurations to choose from, the Jubilee on Fluted is a work of art
Nice video! I’m glad Rolex went back with the more traditional sizing, I’m sure no of us saw that coming. When I see this new variant next to an 14270/114270 I prefer the dial of the older ones. The texts is smaller and the 369 is smaller as well (no lume though). It’s less bold. It’s totally a personal preference though. But if you asked me which explorer would I choose it would be the 1016. Infinitely cooler and I absolutely prefer Rolex vintage dials over their modern counterparts
Beautiful! Hi man, just a question. Do you give a gift to your Rolex SA for prioritizing you on the list? Do you think its appropriate? I intend to give one to my SA as a sign of gratitude considering I don't have any purchase history and it's a hot ticket model.
Just picked up my 124270 yesterday and decided to gift my AD an amazing box of Belgian chocolates. Felt like the right thing to do and was a nice gesture which they seemed to appreciate.
Yeah I’ve definitely thought about it. I think I’ll bring them some chocolates for Christmas 🎄 not sure if Covid changes any of their policies for accepting food gifts!
A long-awaited return of the classic 36 mm diameter as worn by actors Robert Mitchum, Tom Hanks but more interestingly by British gentlemen such as author Ian Fleming, watchmaker Roger W. Smith and zoologist Sir David Attenborough
I tried on a 1016 recently. They had it at an AD... I would never spend 20k on a watch that looked very flimsy and tired... but the size was lovely... this new Explorer is 100% the perfect one watch... and I'm on the list. I'm a few years away from being able to afford one, but your gorgeous video was the final moment...I am totally convinced that this is the right choice. It's stylish, small, subtle, high quality...I wish there was a little micro adjust system, but you can't have it all... my G shock 5600E is my daily wear, while the Explorer is slowly coming my way..I think that it perfectly goes against the culture of big shiny fashion watches.... it doesn't scream... it doesn't have to...bravo
@CoolHandLuke ummm thanks for the idea? Ha ha well it's for a special occasion in 3 years, so that's what I'm aiming for. Again, thanks for the sensible suggestion
Ive had mine adjusted so that its relatively loose. It remains very comfortable because its light. It doesnt need a snug fit like other behemoths and constant adjustments like glidelock.
I have the 114270. Yes, 36mm is better than 39mm, snd looks right on your wrist. Though I still prefer 20mm lug width. And Explorer text looks better up too. Did you get it at your AD? What camera do you use?
Tried it on recently…..way to small…… feels too dainty and delicate which is not good for a tool watch. And that polished bezel is a complete scratch magnet!!!! But loved the review and the feel of your video…. Really nicely done, thank you
The 36mm is lovely but is just a tad to small given the tapered strap. I have the 39mm and think it is just right even thou I don’t like the taper in the strap as it makes the watch look small. If it was 41mm in size, like the OPs and Datejusts, then it would be to big. I just don’t appreciated being charged the same amount of money for a watch that is now smaller in size. It’s no different to food manufacturers reducing the pack size but charging the same. It irks you like hell and this is no different.

This the most daintiest and cartoonish feminine Exp 1 to date. The narrower lugs and aggressive taper of the bracelet makes it wear so much smaller than the DateJust36 and OP36. Im sorry. The 124270 proportions are wrong. Much prefer the 114270.
@@russellseah2347 Have you tried it at least or are you just judging from the videos and others… Some prefer small watches and others the big ones, I really don’t see the connection on the female side. In addition, the 36 with this size and this bracelet is perfectly suited to its usefulness.

Amazing ...i got it in 21..great my online clock 😊
I might be able to get it at retail at around 8kUSD. Should I go for it? Worth the investment?
Perfect, just perfect!
👌 Well presented, thanks..👍
Have the 39 waiting for the 36..
Good step with the AR coating internally, but still too reflective..not quite perfect..imho..
It is perfection.
Nice. I have the larger version, but this one is way cool.
It's perfect...just perfect...
Nice video!!! Love watching your watch journey!!! The explorer 36 is the purest form of a watch. Time only, classically sized, amazing specs…less is more when it comes to this watch….a true gem! A 1 and done piece, similar to the sub no date (albeit in a diver format).
If I had to create a 5 watch collection it would be:
Sub no date (diver)
Explorer 36 (GADA)
Santos medium (formal GADA)
Gshock square
1st watch that started it all or at least one of great sentimental value
Edit: may scratch out the santos for the Tudor BB54
Excellent rotation! No GMT or travel watches? 😁
Thanks for your awesome video. I really love mine!
You’re very welcome! Enjoy yours 😉
The comparison between your OP36 was very surprising. Is the new explorer really that much smaller compared the the OP 36? What would you choose between the batman and the 36 explorer?
@@t.sfinest is the case actually that much smaller?
I’d probably choose the Explorer. Better daily driver due to its versatility and low key nature. Yeah crazy how it makes the op36 look larger!
I think the 124270 is about 35.4mm and the OP36 is actually 37.xmm. so its not an illusion.
@@aussieexpat wow. That’s a big difference between 2 “36 mm” watches.
next move for rolex must be 39mm subby!!!!!!
removing that mercedes hour hand could really modernize it and possibly make it look less fancy ...i dont understand that rolex engraving around the dial is looks a bit much for a tool watch
Hello! Amazing video as always! So how does this compare to the explorer 2 you showed us in your EDC video?
Members of the IBWC (itty bitty wrist committee) rejoice.
I would like to see Rolex continue to circle back towards the 1016. Rolex, my life expectancy is around 2060😂; can you also swing the Explorer 2 line back towards the 1655?
Wow are you sure that was OP 36mm? I have a green one and the explorer seems much smaller for some reason in your video
Great review
Thank you 😊
So as an owner of a gmt, sub and explorer. Would it be accurate to say you wear your explorer the most?
Sub gets most of my wrist time 😊
Hey my friend nice review !
36mm is the perfect size
Its shocking how much smaller it looks next to the 36mm I think rolex rounds up and down on these published sizes.
Great review. Very understated watch 👌
Would make a great versatile daily watch as you say. Out of the steel Submariner and steel GMT (black/blue or blue/red) which would you choose? I have the Daytona which I have been using daily but looking to add an Explorer 36mm but also either a Sub or a GMT….hard call. Many thanks in advance
I prefer the newer gmts versus the new submariner 41 just based on the wearability factor. God forbid Rolex ever makes the gmt in +40mm!
I have a 39mm 2015 version and aquired this new 36mm model yesterday
I think it’s almost perfect but would be happier if the clasp could be a bit thinner
Beautiful watch. What is your wrist size?
Thank you!! My wrist is 6.5” in circumference give or take.
Perfection? Say it ain't so! Once you adjust to the size, Speedys and Subs appear comically large. Mine hasn't left my (7.25") wrist in 6 weeks. GADA? Definitely. One and done? Exit? Perhaps.
What do you mean by GADA?
#124270 is possibly the ultimate Rolex sports model.
1000% 👍 🔥
@@Speedbird36 thanks for the advice, man. I’ll do the same.
Yeah I’ve definitely thought about it. I think I’ll bring them some chocolates for Christmas 🎄 not sure if Covid changes any of their policies for accepting food gifts!
@CoolHandLuke Leave
@@aussieexpat that's really useful to know thank you!
It would be perfect if it was 41mm 21mm like the new sub.
What is your wrist span and size
6.5” in circumference. Not sure on span
I have the 114270. Yes, 36mm is better than 39mm, snd looks right on your wrist. Though I still prefer 20mm lug width. And Explorer text looks better up too. Did you get it at your AD? What camera do you use?
Thank you! I love the older references too. AD sourced.
What is your wrist size?
Hi, my wrist is 6.5” in circumference!
124270 is Rolex best watch.
Isn’t that Eric channel 😮
It's not the best Explorer, it's too small. The MK II 39mm that was recently discontinued is the best available. I've also worn both.
I think I'd rather watch B rolls of everyday life you wearing this watch. No explanations. Just life.
36 (actual size is 35.4) is just a bit toooooooo smallllllll
Tried it on recently…..way to small…… feels too dainty and delicate which is not good for a tool watch. And that polished bezel is a complete scratch magnet!!!! But loved the review and the feel of your video…. Really nicely done, thank you
124270 does looks a little smaller on your wrist. How bout trying out 224270?
watch my latest review :)
It is scratched on stone.
Hands too small and why oh why Explorer at the top throwing off the dial?
36 is too small, at least today. Rolex realized that hence the new 40mm
Oohhh yah itz wooleex
Ohh yah itz understated underrated and flying under the 🥺
Itz descreet itz no body want it
Itz cozt 10000$ dolla coz itz from hanz wilzdove charity trust foundation 😔♥️😳
36mm is utterly tiny. 39 is acceptable, but generally i prefer watches that are around 40mm.
This the most daintiest and cartoonish feminine Exp 1 to date. The narrower lugs and aggressive taper of the bracelet makes it wear so much smaller than the DateJust36 and OP36.
Im sorry. The 124270 proportions are wrong.
Much prefer the 114270.
Nothing wrong wth the case size. But the symmetry and proportions of the lugs and bracelet are too thin.
Its just perfect
@@russellseah2347 Have you tried it at least or are you just judging from the videos and others… Some prefer small watches and others the big ones, I really don’t see the connection on the female side. In addition, the 36 with this size and this bracelet is perfectly suited to its usefulness.
I prefer the 36mm 114270
And of course I've tried it on.
Bullshit,yes if you’re a woman or have girly wrists,so you’re wrong.
One of Rolex’s best moves
Except for the 19mm lugs 😩
