People should take some time to appreciate this guy's beautiful songs in his reviews! What a great channel, i am very glad i found it!
Thanks Again! :)
I’ve watched a few videos on this and no one has actually explained how the return channels work exactly. This was great! Being able to record dry and wet on separate channels is HUGE - thank you
Wow, the classic phrase "I came for the gear, stayed for the music" fits perfectly in this case. Great content! The Neve sounds lovely aswell.
Thank you so much Ossian!! :)
Haven't binge watched a channel like this in a while! Top shelf content and production. I'd like a studio tour video! Cheers!
Thank you so much Simon! :) really appreciate that.
Thank you for including a full demo that isn't just stale or a few notes. It really helps to hear a well-recorded song and nice mix!
Thanks so much Nathan! :) I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Very nice review. Alex. Always a pleasure
Thanks so much! :)
amazing as always bud, really sounds great. I'm liking the tonal choice they've made on the conversion. you know I love my Bottom end extension sir
Thanks Phill!! I love your bottom end extension!! :D
Great review I’m learning something new with every review. Great song !!
Thank you so much! 🧡
This is pretty amazing. Very good review AND great music / performance. Love the Song!

Thank you so much Hasse! :)
Good review and demo! Thank you!
Thanks Marius! :)
Amazing work no one is doing what you do! You should be out on tour!
Great tech info also right on!
Thank you so much!! :D
Again thank you always for your honest review.
I like when you quote: “For Neve to come to the interface market tells you a lot on how the music industry is running”.
But I wish before they even put their product out for the public, they should’ve check with honest reviewers like you, who are not just get the money and make you think that the product is heaven sound. That is why now i shot down some channels and watch someone like you who is being honest and tell me what i need to know, or if it’s good for my production or not.
Thank you Alic Brits !!!
Thanks James! :)
You're doing God's work with these reviews! Thanks
Thank you so much! :)
Sounds great man. Love the tracks you made! Subbed!
Thank you so much! :)
Wow. Excellent job dude! Congratulations.
Thanks so much Jake! :)
Great review mate! i am getting it next year now.
Thank you so much! :) enjoy it when you get it.
Wow this is great and the demo song was really good thank you !!!
Thank you so much! :)
Informative video man, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Francisco. :)
Soothing & natural sound quality.👍
Great sounding box. :)
Tolle Vorstellung, ein Multitalent, so was macht Spass! Vielen Dank!
Thank you so much Gabriele! :)
Nice review and nice demo!
Thanks Ralph! :)
Beautiful mix,great song!
Thank you so much! :)
Nice deep warmth to the sound.
It’s a great unit for sure! :)
WoW! You are really good! Thanks a lot, and I will follow you and continue to learn more and more about the world of recording.
Wow, thanks! :)
Yep, it's been said it before.
But unlike so many other gear reviewer where you hear the same tracks, usually of low quality, across diferent videos, Britt composes, records and mixes a unique track for each review. And they are really good! Congrats!
I need some mixes done and I like your style. Will be in touch.
Thank you so much Victor! :) feel free to get in touch.
I really dig that natural sound.
It’s great! :) thanks Perry.
great video as allways!
Thanks Pedro! :)
wow... you are a musician, many intrument player, producer, sound engineer 😵👏
Thank you so much! :)
Hi Alec,
I am a 88M owner and for the most part I fully agree with your assessment, thanks so much for putting all the effort into this video.
I think it's worth mentioning that the power matrix of the 88M is able to provide everything the box needs to run efficiently and effectively.
While this box may not be to everyone's taste or budget I do believe this is a remarkable value considering the extraordinary quality.
I would like to have seen a spdif input option to connect my 8801's and I would have liked to have seen a USB recording port where we could track directly to a usb drive with a similar configuration to the brilliant Soundcraft Ui webpage over a closed wifi connection.
I did use my iPad pro with the 88M but I used a bog stock power brick , not aware Neve has a recommended power hub we should be using.
Lastly, I've attempted using the 88M as a mixing interface with surprisingly good results, I have not gotten it to fall over as yet but for medium size project mixing, this has thus far proven to have more than enough power to operate in this capacity as well, and sound absolutely spectacular.
I appreciate the omissions you'd have preferred to see but I don't see any of those as a real concern and my own wants for this box are purely personal and based on my own experience.
Stay safe and well mate
gene
Thanks for the feedback and your personal review there Gene! :) really appreciate that.
Hi, Gene! Is it possible to send the outputs back to the line inputs to process something from the daw with the preamps or through the inserts?
@@evsp8048 sure! You’ll need to align the grab to compensate for RT latency
Wow! Such a great song!
Thanks James! :)
Great review, thanks!
Thanks Johnny! :)
Definitely has the “Neve sound.” Sonically, this reminded me of your 1073DPX review. If I were choosing preamps for you, I would go with Neve. Well done!
It’s a great sounding box! :)
Great vid. Also, great demo song. Hit me like a wall of bricks. Good work!
Thank you so much John! :)
wow great work!
Thank you Mailer! :)
Awesome... Love the Song as well
Thank you so much! :)
Such a great channel with some of the best gear demos. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these reviews. Great song and production as always. I think this box really has a nice sound and vibe. I'm a big fan of when the preamp is paired and tuned with a converter all in one unit. It takes so much guesswork out of the recording chain. I think AMS NEVE has a nice combo here sonically.
Thank so much Matt! :) I agree, the pairing of conversion and pre always hits differently. 👌🏽
This song get SO stuck in my head, you should definitely have this one on your album
Thanks so much! :)
Bro how have you only got 5k subs? Most underrated audio channel on YT
Thanks so much for the kind words! :) will keep working on it.
lovely song, subscribed!!
Thank you so much Remi. :)
you're a very talented man!
Thank you so much Kevin! :)
First and foremost, great song! Keep up doing a great work!
Thank you so much! :D
Great review
Thanks David! :)
good channel. nice music demo.
Thanks so much Alexander! :)
Wow really nice song man!
Thank you Boris! :)
i think this thing sounds amazing and your engineering of tones is fantastic I think the only thing this mix needs maybe is too open up the high-end with a maag eq or something similar
Thanks Angel! :) yeah, I love how everything is cohesive with this box, some pultec on the master with an API 2500 and I think the mix would be almost ready to go. 👌🏽
This thing sounds amazing!!! None of that thin, nasty sound of the other interfaces with the same type of build-including UA and Antelope AND the others.
It’s a great unit for sure! :)
You will become big one day. Just keep persevering and create content.
Thanks so much! :)
this sounds awesome
It’s a great box for sure! :)
@@alecbrits nice demo song as well and nice gear, I'm a happy owner of Moog Grandmother as well
You are a gentleman sir.
Thank you sir! :)
neve + neumann is a classic combo.
Indeed! :)
I always enjoy your videos and always learn a lot too. Just on my earbuds, this sounded warm and smooth, very un-harsh - I like this sound. Although without an A/B comparison for me to hear, it's hard to assess how your song sounds as a result of the one particular piece of gear you're reviewing at the moment. Each review is a different performance, different instruments, etc. So I rely on your personal assessment at the end, but you tend to be diplomatic rather than decisively negative about things...but that's cool. --- This is a great youtube channel. Great music performances, great information. It's clear you're passionate and talented and I'm sure your audience will keep growing and growing. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Keep em coming.
Thanks for the feedback! :) I try to show the weaknesses and the strengths to each device. The demonstration is there for the viewer to decide on how they feel about the device. :)
Nice. Subbed instantly. Thank you!
Thank you so much! :)
great voice man
Thank you so much Priyam! :)
Fantastic review Alec...ty! "Sounds absolutely unbelievable". Sound quality niche product...just as I suspected. "Interesting" indeed.
Thank Music Creation! :)
Ok, I’m bout to fire it up...let’s see what we got...it better be good!🙂
Brits does a great job either way, always has great demo songs.
@@bigdap100 I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts...if you care to share.
@@musiccreation1198 I'm AB'ing right now as we speak...
@@bigdap100 Cool!
You’d make anything sound good. Awesome song.
Thank you so much! :)
the MINIMUM gain is +21dB on Mic (range of +21 to +68dB) and +13dB minimum on instrument, meaning these inputs are likely to clip on many (maybe even most) sources.Potential issues that Mic input impedance is a tad on the low side at 1.5 kOhms, and a minimum gain of +21 dB would mean that mic input overload would occur at -3 dBu
Thanks for the specs! :) I recorded with DPA mics on the drums and did not run into clipping issues. But it’s good that you highlighted the specs there for us!
ok pal your music is amazing! Your style is so so so...
Thank you Dimitrios. :)
I like how easy it is to set up a comfort reverb with this.
Yeah! Super useful. :)
exelent review
Thanks Van! :)
Great song!!!🙌
Thanks so much! :D
Nice review Alec, i see your Echofix EF-X2 do you plan on doing a review of it?
There is already a review on the channel. :)
Alec please make album!!! We love your songs!!!❤❤❤
Working on it! :)
@@alecbrits I think I heard 88M song at least 50 times and love it🥰...and bought Neve 88M based on your review as well👍
A couple of Neve preamps would be great but I bought an SSL Six a while ago and have been extremely happy with its flexibility and sound. Matched for price and features the Neve leaves a lot to be desired.
It’s a workflow thing isn’t it? :) thanks for your insight Bo!
I'm surprised with hinting at a comparison, as these are two vastly different products. SSL Six isn't even an interface! No converters to get your sound in or out of the box. I'm not knocking you for liking it. I'm sure people are doing good things with it. But it's limited to working with SSL's purposefully limited tools and routing options. The EQ and comp are not the features or the quality SSL built their reputation on. As it's an interface with connection options, you can use whatever analog gear you want with the 88m, plus it gives professional sound on the way in and out.
I actually want to combine the Neve 88M with my SSL SIX, and get rid of my Apollo Twin.
@@johnnymandez An interface and the Six are complimentary. The Neve would be a great addition to the analogue workflow but it doesn't have the I/O's to work optimally with a Six. So I suppose I was lamenting the fact that, for me, it's a lost opportunity. I could be wrong. As far as the Six is concerned the 2 preamps on it are stellar. And even though the G-series compressor is limited it works in a very musical way to glue a mix that, I would say, an interface alone doesn't. Now, if Neve 88Mv2 came out with the same I/O's as an Apogee Quartet ... 🤔
BTW I'm not using the preamps of the Apogee just its AD/DA converters.
Great review Alec. I learned a lot and I will certainly get one of these when it hit the second hand market. Do you think it's the first gear of this kind? I have the feeling that buying this is like buying outboard pres. It is not clear for me if we can eventually use this as preamps only and hit another gear for the conversation.
Thanks so much Hekho! :) Steinburg have done transformer balanced conversion in the past. You can use just the pre’s by going out of the insert sends, that bypasses all conversion. :)
You deserve way more subscribers. Peace
Thank you so much Rectape! :)
great song. reminds me a bit of sting. but unique. sounds really really good for being just rough tracks without compression, eq and other processing. I ordered one. I'm a bit skeptical but I'm going to give it chance.
Thank you Yannic! :). I hope you enjoy the unit.
waiting for mine :)
Enjoy it! :D
man you are a dope ass songwriter that song is fire
Thanks so much Eddie! :)
No doubt. :) the 88m sounds unbelievable. Like you say, it’s the music and the room that highlight the power of the 88m, where as the Apollo is all about the plug-in work flow. Enjoy your unit!
Great música man!
Thanks Sabastian! :)
Amazing, thanks for doing this review. I have a Steinberg URRT with Rupert Neve transformers and I'm thinking of replacing it with a 88M. I would love it if someone did a comparison vid of the 88m with a UR-RT2.
That would be really interesting! :) how do you find the Steinberg?
@@alecbrits Sweetwater did a great demo of the 4 channel unit on their YT channel and they did a great job. I personally love it and think it sounds better than most similar units, including the Apollo, Audient, and SSL. Those transformers make all the difference, they're also in the line input signal path.
@@Espresso101 that’s so awesome, I gotta get my hands on one!
@@alecbrits not only would I be indebted to you but I think it would be a great service to the community. The UR-RT2 is a fraction of the cost of a 88m. Even so, I would still be interested in the 88m if it's a marked improvement over it.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Yes!
Thanks Jim!
I like that solid sonic sound it’s definitely there and also the clarity. I just don’t like that harshness going on with the pre, I wish they would’ve Smoothing out some of that harshness. But other than that I love the thing.
It’s a solid sounding unit for sure! :) thanks for your insight Richard.
Thanks, does your demo have a banjo on a track? Or is that the elec guitar direct into the neve?. Sounds way clean. Your demos are excellent.
No banjo thankfully. :) it’s Electric guitar I to the Neve. With an echo fix and an Echo Dream 2.
Great review! I think this would be an amazing addition to my setup. I currently use a Fireface 800 interface but would use this as an input / print device. I’m just wondering can you use the Neve 88m to route audio out of the computer, or is it just an input device? Thanks
It is just an input device in its standalone mode. I think you can send out of the ADAT though.
Thanks for the thorough review. Which would you go with if you had to choose between the 88m or Babyface Pro for home recording? Predominantly using 1-2 microphones on acoustic instruments, vocals, amps, and some live drums. No synths, samples, midi, etc. Looking for vintage studio sounds (50s-70s). Or is there another good option to consider?
Thanks Brad! :) I have not spent any time with the RME stuff, so I can’t give you an honest answer there.
no comparison man, the neve kills the babyface soundwise. used to have a babyface never liked the sound, its super sterile and thin i found in comparison, ppl always rave about the super drivers but very few speak about babyface sound, i even preferred my audient id22 compared to the babyface pro, ad converters going to the speakers are super important for me they werent good enough on the BBface
Thanks for great review! I’m considering to get one, but only my concern is that I want to use 88M for Mixing and Mastering inserting other outboard. Can we use Insert SND to send sound from DAW to outboard and receive back to RTN from outboard? Or only way to do is to use main out to use as send and receive the return to pres or RTN and monitor through Headphones only?
Thanks so much!
It’s not really possible to use this in that way really, unless you were sending signals out with one interface and then using this as a capture device.
Love your channel and your music. I would love for you to demo a really cheap crappy audio interface and I bet it would still sounds good. Your demos makes me realise that if the performance is great the recording will be.
I have reviews a couple affordable interfaces. :) check out my EVO reviews.
I like this one because no software on my mac. And usb powered. A true good device for traveling outside.
Sounds like a good fit. :)
Hey mate; great video! Was wondering: how good would you say is the conversion in the 88M compared to say, the Cranborne Audio 500R8?
Thanks Alejandro! :) they would compare similarly, except that with the Cranborne you can almost choose the tone of your records by placing the mic pre’s you want before the converters.
@@alecbrits Thanks for the advice mate. Would a setup like the API lunchbox + Burl converter then sound noticeably different than using the Cranborne Audio 500R8? (using the same preamps)
Still putting the Neve through its paces,Was also thinking about rme babyface as well ,thoughts? Using the interface for songwriting ,John
Hey John! :) I’ve not used the RME yet, so I can’t give you a solid comparison there.
Thanks for your review! Would this be good for voice over compared to the Apollo Twin?
Thank you! :) I think that depends on your current recording chain really. If you are doing all the processing before the conversion stage, then it may be the right interface. If you are using the Apollo processing to achieve the sound you would like, then the Apollo is the right interface for the job. :)
Hi Alec, really appreciated your review. I thought for certain my mind was made up for an Audient id44 mkii, but now I'm not so sure. These are entirely different beasts. Have you done a review on this particular Audient. I'm at bit of a loss here. I'm thinking the bottom line difference must lay in the audio, but hearing the difference in one review would be so advantageous. Thanks if something like this is ever possible. Good job in your review.
I have not tried the MKii yet. But it does offer a very extra features. I very familiar with the pre’s as I use them every day on my console. :) the Neve will have a more harmonically rich tone then the Audient, but the Audient has a lot more creature comforts than the Neve. So it depends on your workflow.
"These are entirely different beasts." = spot on. Do you need a Swiss army knife"? If yes, iD44mkII is a great choice. If no, I'd buy the 88M.
@@alecbritsin terms of AD/DA. How will you compare the Audient interface to the Neve 88m
I got it one week ago, the sound is stunning.
The DA is so solid isn’t it?!
@@alecbrits oh yes, it sounds so clear. My best investment for sure.
I’ve been looking for a review of this for a while, so thank you for this excellent one! I’m going to upgrade my interface in the next month or so, and I’m trying to decide between this and the Apollo Twin X Duo. Any other thoughts you can offer on this choice?
I think I covered my thoughts, but like I said, it’s about what you are looking for in your workflow. The Neve is a great interface, the Apollo gives you the additional options with software and more ability to expand with other Apollos interfaces. :)
@@alecbrits You definitely did. Sorry I should have been more specific. I didn’t know if you had any additional thoughts regarding the 88M vs specifically the Apollo Twin X. I think this answers that though. Thabk you very much👍
@@LBJedi G.Michael Hall ... a commenter here ... might be willing to share his opinion on that comparison. Fwiw, I would not invest in - (the current product line of) - UA DSP hardware in 2022. Investing in an Apple "Pro" or "Max" chip machine provides FAR better ROI vs UA DSP hardware.
@@musiccreation1198 Thank you! This is extremely helpful. I’m actually upgrading to an M1 Max before o upgrade my interface, so I’m very glad you brought this to my attention.
@@LBJedi That's what I did :) I sold my Apollo Twin X Quad and Octo sat about two months ago. Bought a MacStudio Max & RME interface...I'm thrilled with the results. I already know how G.Michael Hall feels about Apollo Twin vs 88M...just think it's inappropriate for me to speak on his behalf. ;)
Loved the song, Alec. How would you say that the conversion of the 88M compares with Apogee/RME/Apollo?
I’ve not used an apogee in years, and I’ve not used an RME yet. I far prefer the tone of the Neve both AD and DA compared to my Apollos. :) the Neve was softer in the upper mids, and fuller and detailed on the bottom end.
@@alecbrits Thank you so much for replying! :) Does it come with an output pot similar to the one on the 1073DPX? I was planning on picking this up to route my current chain into (1073 --> CL1B --> 88M) but noticed some reviews mentioning that it starts with +6db of gain to begin with.
Merci!
Thank you Daniel! :)
When using the 88M as an audio interface, and expanded with the 1073opx via ADAT, can you digitally send line level signals out? I.e. to external hardware while mixing?
I’m not too sure, from what I remember the Neve OPX does not have DA converters for 8 lines out.
Hi Alec. I have a question regarding the ADDA converters of this unit and the Apollo's. How you would compare those 2?
On my current set I'm good with preamps (no need extras, 1-2 is fine just in case) and Im mostly looking for good DA converters and monitor control- speaker outs and headphones. Thanks in advance! always enjoy your vids, Jess
Hey Jess! :) thanks so much! Would something like a Dangerous Source controller be more of what you are looking for?
@@alecbrits the Dangerous Source is a great unit with cool features but I don't see any DA converter in it...The Neve 88M seems ideal (with just 2 mic pres, transformers, and line in/outs) just wondering about the AD/DA conversion. It says "reference-grade conversion quality", but is it for real? Usually for these kinda stuff you really have to test it..print a mix with this and same mix with lets say an Apollo x8 or so. There you go, your next vid! :)
@@MountainViewStudio Neve converters sound better than the Apollo to my ears. More depth and Apollo 8x high mids are a little harsch compare to tne 88M
Cool song dude.
Thank you so much! :)
Is there a way to just access the use of the pre amps without the conversion? Maybe out of the send? Great video. Thank you
Yeah! :) just take the insert sends.
I got the Steinberg by Yamaha just because it had the Neve Transformers, but the noise floor isn't low enough. I thought about getting this but the price range is about three times too much. I'll just go with the SSL, since both the noise and price are low.
Go for what works best for you. That’s always the best way. :)
Hi Alec, great job. I notice that the large red mon level also is a button like all the other pots. What happens when you press it? Can't find any info on it anywhere. Cheers
Thanks Paul! :) it does nothing sadly!
