      Yes a lovely song. I think it really suited the 1073, it had a 70s feel to it. This was a time when the 1073 was the go to pre amp for those giant mixing desks. Giant Ashtray full of dog ends anyone!

    Good lord I have used and owned a lot of 1073 pres including this one. Never could put a finger on what bothered me about them. I think they are too thick! Serious buildup in the low mids in this demo. That 88LRB sounds freaking amazing. Thanks for the demo! I am gonna order one. The mix is so musical and open with the 88. Night and day.

      @@alecbrits I guess your demo really got me to spend some money - you should get some royalities from the manufacturers for your great advertisment ;-) Maybe I'll get the 88R LB too since it offers something different. I was thinking of the API 512c, but maybe I'll rather go with the 88R LB as alternative. For very clean stuff I already have an SSL 500 Six Cannel. It's great that Neumann re-launched the U-67. It's expensive, yes, but it's brand new and not used without a guarantee. And they exactly copied the original specs. This is very tempting.

    88RLB is so much more dynamic and natural sounding. Always found the 73LB a lil compressed sounding, tho at times to it's benefit. The tops on the 73LB seems a tad more open due to less midrange and dynamics coming through, but the 88RLB is so much more lively and clear that I'll probably favor it 9/10 times.

  • @revelationsoundstudio
    @revelationsoundstudio Před 9 měsíci +1

    First off Alex, thank you for your very insightful videos. I know a lot of hard work was done behind the scenes. One additional thing I noticed is the transients on the 88R are faster on the drums vs the 1073 which has a little more relaxed sound. Though both are good, with my studio current setup with all ready having a Manley Voxbox and other gear, the 88R I am more attracted to.

    Channel splitters usually cause impedance loading interaction between connected pre-amps. You can test your channel splitter by connecting something like a Cloud Lifter Variable Z to one pre-amp then passing a tone through the splitter into the connected pre's and listen when you vary the impedance on the pre-amp with the CL variable Z if it effects the other connected pre-amp(s).
    Very nice song by the way - very well performed.

    Beautiful work, Alec. I've just watched several videos, and through my Dynaudio BM6A's and Klipsch sub, I liked every 1073 labeled product the best. Warm, punchy AND inviting, perhaps the closest to my old MCI JH116 two inch tape machine. I need to upgrade my computer and interface (currently Antelope Zen Studio and early 2015 macbook pro). After watching your videos, I'm leaning toward a 2020 M1 mac 64 gig ram and 4TB M. Thinking the 1073opx would be great as an interface (maybe the Neumann as a close second, sonically) Thank you for the fantastic music to help me decide!

      Hey Sam! Do you feel that Bae has smoother upper mids than Ams 1073lb? I had Ams 1073 dpa with u87ai and i thought that sound was too strident and sharp in the high mids.

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  Před 3 lety +3

      Hey Phillip, I think a lot of that comes from the U87ai rather than the 1073. :) but that’s not to say that the BAE might be a little darker.

      I did use a U87ai with my 1073lb and found what you said to be true, hence why I prefer the BAE, but the U87 does have the mide range push. I now use a u47 clone from Nordic Audio with the BAE 73mpl, Ive gotten great results.

      I’m a little hesitant to go down the road of comparing units that are trying to do the same thing at the moment. I think the two companies both do great work, but I don’t want to start the whole “which 1073 is best” thing. It just gets nasty in the comments for no reason.
      There are so many different mic pre’s out there that I would love to try out first before doing shootouts between the same two designs.

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  Před 3 lety +4

      Hi Dean! :) thanks for commenting. I preferred the 88R on all sources, I found it had a little more of an open tonality that got me to the intended result quicker. Sometimes you want to have something that is a little softer, thicker and harmonically rich to soothe the upper mids of some more aggressive sources, and that’s where the 1073 comes in and really helps.
      I think hearing the full production is a healthy way of hearing the full effect of each circuit spread across a production, rather than isolated instances. But that’s just me!
      Hope this answers your questions Dean! :)

    That 88R preamp is incredible... I've always heard great things about the preamps in those consoles but I'm really surprised at how great the 500 series version sounded. Such an underrated pre. In my opinion, it smoked the 1073 LB on everything (except for bass, where I liked the 1073's extra fatness). The depth and clarity of the mix took a quantum leap forward with the 88R. Maybe I'll have to pick myself up a few :)

      Luckily, I've had an opportunity to work on both boards. I've always found going straight from the pre into the box is the best sound for guitars and bass. Very little e.q. just to pull extra stuff out, and usually a gate for the drums. Working on a handful of different consoles, imo the 88R is in a league of it's own, it's unfair in a way, because nothing else sounds like it.

I wonder because other than more lows and highs on the 88's I don't hear a lot of differences, and i'm missing that 3-5db boost 73 usually has on 5-6K. in fact is sounds like that boost is on the 88. It’s hard to give you an answer for both of these questions. If you are looking for a pre that is going to give you a lot of character and some tasteful distortion when pushed, then the 1073 is the way to go. If you would like to have a versatile pre with a lovely tone that’s well represented across a very wide palette of sources, then the 88RLB is the option out of these two. :)

      The RND only has one transformer, more open tone with the open of dialling in how much saturation you want with the silk. The RND also has a great variable hpf. The 1073 LB is $300 dollars more. Two transformers. Not too sure why the prices are that far apart. :)

    Love the video and really helped me decide to get both the 1073LB and 88R, into my 500r8, I'd love to get your opinion on this, I am single production artist who does majority guitar & elektron A4 tracking but mostly running samples from my DAW to my outboard for "refinement" do you think a single unit of the above pre's is sufficient? I am looking for a compact multi-use box and I am thinking of using the other slots for a zhal eq1 and some compressors and perhaps a reverb, any advice is appreciated.

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Lewis, thanks for the comment. I would potentially look into getting a pair of matched units to be able to process stereo stems. Running things through pre’s will help the effect, but perhaps not as much as eq/compression will.

    I'm just curious: when you say the splitter has iso output then it sounds like that output has a transformer in the signal path. That might alter the signal. It is also possible to do this kind of configuration with just a y-cable. Then it is 100% sure that the signals are identical. Anyway, great video! Keep it up!

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  Před 2 lety

      Hi Y Reyes! :) there is a pretty big difference between the two mics for sure. The 87 has a boost in the upper mids that sometimes makes the voice feel a little too forward or harsh. The 67 is a more forgiving or smoother sounding microphone. It’s a little more versatile because of that. :)
