- In the wake of the May 24, 2022, school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 21 people, 19 of them children, attention has again turned to America's gun debate. Revisit the divide that split Newtown, Connecticut, after the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. (Aired 2013)

In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook tragedy, Newtown residents engaged in a debate over guns that could have taken place almost anywhere in America. The issue: Should amateur shooting ranges be subject to inspection and approval by the police chief? On one side were residents concerned about noise and unregulated shooting. On the other, those who see gun rights as an essential American freedom.

Good guys with guns just stood around for 2 hours and allowed the Uvalde killer to kill everyone. Good job.
They made you believe they will protect you
Cops standing around is what socialism looks like. Private police depts would have a bounty on mass shooters.

And 9 years later, we are worse than we were before. Inflation is rampant, geopolitical issues abound, mass shootings have multiplied, and we are still mired in a pandemic which spawned unprecedented public mistrust in gov't and public officials. When will everyone accept the tragic worldview that humanity will be suffering all of these issues and more, likely because human nature hasn't changed in thousands of years.
So in Connecticut you can't hunt with a gun on Sundays, but you can use a bow/crossbow because it's quiet. If you were to hunt with a gun and were fortunate to harvest game you might shoot once or twice, but there is no law to keep target shooting quiet on Sundays so folks have to endure the disturbing of the peace by the NRA crowd out to make a point. And they wonder why the majority of people dislike them? You're NOT a good neighbor running 200 rounds through your AR-15 at 9am on Sunday
I think they (NRA) must send out blast texts or emails filling them with fodder about their guns getting confiscated. No civilian needs a weapon that was SPECIFICALLY invented and designed to be used in war by the U.S. Army. No civilian needs weapons that accepts magazines. I don't even think civilians need semi-automatic weapons. I feel perfectly safe with our guns. They are all heirloom long guns, and almost as old as I am (11/68) with one exception. That exception is a one shot, that accepts either a rimmed .45 or a .410 shotgun shell. Why anyone NEEDS a 30 round magazine is absolutely foreign to me. Banning “assault weapons” is a fool’s errand. Too many ambiguities, loopholes, exceptions & work arounds. That would be yet another joke on Americans.
ALL semi automatic firearms. They’re FAR closer to auto machine guns than the single shot firearms mentioned in the 2nd. 100 round magazines firing 2,3,4 or more rounds per second? That’s a war weapon causing mass casualties. “Self defense,” my ass!
Single-shot firearms only. 1-2 rounds per minute are what the 2nd guarantees. That’s it.

I see no inconsistency between the right to own a weapon and the right to not be murdered. One of the rights does not need to be subordinated to the other. Both rights can exist simultaneously. Having a weapon does not require one to murder anyone. Being murdered by someone is already illegal.
Another example of your bad logic is when you call gun ownership a right and then later you call it a privilege. Gun ownership cannot be both a right and a privilege at the same time. I live in New Orleans where there are numerous car jackings daily. I open carry and don't care how ppl feel about it.
If l was living in Boise Idaho, l might not need to.
You'd be a fool and a sitting duck not to carry in New Orleans and Louisiana in general
I wish something would changed, but nope! I personally do t know how these parents hold composure! Such phoney politicians and its so unacceptable, icant even stand it! Up the school security, big ass metal detectors would be a start!!
"Passing a new law and then moving on is not the answer"
What is that man talking about that is exactly the answer!

Not a tipping point.
At a buffet, I personally sneak corn into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 boiled corn ears in my jacket pockets. It is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corn thinking they were part of the buffet.
How would you feel

@JG You are the troll team.
The only real thing that will force a change will be a confrontation on a mass scale call it whatever you want but a lot of people are willing to sacrifice their lives for their natural rights. On the flip side there are a lot of people who are willing to do whatever is needed to resolve the divide. 1700’s it was Taxation, 1800’s it was states rights, 1900’s to present it’s firearm ownership.
Natural right to arm oneself
with weapons of defense.
Our biggest threat is bad government.
My belief FRONTLINE is amazing journalism, Never do I hear anything that could closely be misconstrued as a lie or untruthful.
On the Gun control issue, It is "my personal opinion" That Yes we do have a right to bare arms, to protect our families and defend against attackers AS the constitution states. It is NOT the legal, legitimate or responsible gun owner that we need to target, but a control on the purchasing of a fire arm.
It takes far more time to adopt a child than it takes to get a permit to own a firearm, Why?
It takes far more testing and scrutiny to get a drivers permit, than it takes to get a permit to own a firearm, WHY?
It takes far more time for a business to get a liquor license to sell liquor, than it takes to get a permit to own a firearm. WHY?
I am sure I will hear a flood of off the top comments in every direction, but the fact of the matter is "WE" as the people of this FREE land need to find a common ground soon. Again it is NOT the responsible gun owners that is to burden the blame for the mass shootings, It is the lack of control on the Guns/weapons that are available to "Anyone" at anytime!
GOD bless our great nation, even under these deplorable conditions!
You skipped over the Second Amendment where it says, a well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state. Infringement reduces our security.
@@jakebredthauer5100 the constitution needs to be revised. No need for civilians to have military grade weapons. Stop with the conspiracy theories 😒

You tell em' Terry! 👍🏿
@@jakebredthauer5100 I didn't skip over anything, You just added your option to my comment. As far as the "Well regulated Militia" Isn't that the National Guard? Who is this well regulated Militia? and what other rights will be squashed in having this Militia? More questions than there are answers.
How anybody can be 'divided' about this subject is BEYOND me...
Those who give a damn about the Bill of Rights can be. When I hear you and others demand an end to the automobile because of drunk drivers KILLING innocents then I'm on board and not a minute before. Blaming an inanimate object for the careless operation of it's operator however idiotic is not only stupid but dangerous beyond measure. You obviously have never cracked open a history book.
@@jjbigfoot9077 Guns dont even have the same regulations as automobiles do, so can it. An Automobile is a technology invented for good, all guns were invented for was to kill. Time to start getting this 'well regulated militia' going. Now go make love to your gun and be gone
Okay exactly!! How in the hell does anyone think giving up 2A rights will “save kids”
“Shall not be infringed”
@@jjbigfoot9077 bruh we have DRINKING AGES and SPEED LIMITS due to drunk driving and automobile accidents;
So that mean you're by DEFAULT in favor of Insurance and Licensing for ALL firearms? Because that's not Universal... Yet.
Drinking ages and speed limits don’t prevent drunk driving and driving is a privilege not a right.
Uvalde an army armed to teeth couldn’t save those kids from one armed individual and gun lobbyists say good guys with a gun can stop one bad guy with a gun. Pathetic statement with no merit.
Amazing just how much lives matter when those lives are rich, white and from New England.

US never learns from it's mistake.
heartbreaking
I mean, we’ve definitely learned. Like I’ve learned that I should zig zag, take a second to really listen to where the gunfire is coming from because in hall ways or open spaces it can sound different, and that the three best responses or run, hide, fight in any particular order.

Keep glorifying the shootings and they will continue.
I don't have guns and never owned one in my life, I don't need a 2nd amendment. Civilians, even police should not have guns. That's my extreme view.
Not extreme at all. It makes sense.

Not pro-gun. Pro 2ND AMENDMENT (sound familiar?)
Well that’s not too surprising is it? Stripping a man of his wealth for doubting a narrative was a really bad thing to do.
No kidding. It was brutal and dead wrong
Addressing root causes will ultimately make more of a difference than any heavily contested legislation anyway.
You mean, like expanding mental healthcare resources? Republicans are against that too
Forgive me, but for clarification what's the root cause?
@@typeflo 21 year's old and 3 day waiting period on a rifle. That's how it is in my state. Except currently 18 yrs pistol is 21 an 5 day wait.
The root cause is the more guns that are available, the more people die. That's a very simple root cause. No one is going to seek psychological help!!! What planet are you even from?
@@BarnaliD I 100% AGREE 👍 IT IS VERY SIMPLE!
My 💔 for you..a member of my Church's daughter was one of the victims and she wrote a book about it. So sad😢. Mental health is the answer since other weapons would just replace guns.
Mental health is not the answer. Gun control is
Mental health is the answer huh? Other weapons would replace guns? Right. Because a lunatic with a knife would have the same results as a lunatic with a f.cking assault rifle right? Please get your head out of your arse ffs.
You have better odds of survival with other weapons
Yeah, there's a hell of a big difference between some guy running into a school armed with a knife and baseball bat to a dude armed with fully automatic rifles and pistols...five teachers get together and charge a guy with a bat or knife, some will get cut and hurt but the guy is going down, this isn't John wick where you can defeat even five or six grown adults with a stick or something, I don't care how well trained you are you only have two arms and eyes...you add an assault rifle in there and he can kill all five or six before they've made it three steps...
@@andrewhussey4538 Then on the other hand you have a situation like in Japan a few years ago where a man entered a school and stabbed to death 32(?) children with a knife. So much for 5 or 6 teachers getting together to stop a killer.
Newtown has a mangina.

Can you please elaborate on that and link me to the studies? I'm genuinely curious.
Media is the marketing dept. for mass shooters.
What are you talkin about?
I keep trying to answer.
We can not change fate, but we could be a better people. That is a decision that will be up to us how we treat our children and eachother. What we expose our children to in our homes, what kind of parents we are. We can always continue to put an excuse on top of another excuse knowing full well this life was not and will never be a paradise that is why there are consequences to everything we do. No one just goes off killing kids, torturing humans and causing war in the world with evil intent and gets a slap on the wrist the hellfire exists for a reason and its beyond what you even think just like you dont know everything so let's stop acting like know it alls and be better people. Living without morals is losing sight of reality.
