This is what happens after 40 years of taking money away from public education you have two generations of semi literate adults. That can be manipulated.

We seriously do. If we spent a fraction of what we did on the military budget as we did on health care and on mental health, and on education, this wouldn’t be a thing. As pointed out, we are a not "democracy". That's ok.
We are a Constitutional Republic where the citizens of each state vote in statewide elections as determined by each state within the guidelines of the Constitution. 2 Senators regardless of each states population. They ratify legislation that is supposed to be presented Legislators, the number of each states representatives determined by the population of that state..
Our eligable population votes in our Presidential election, but each state is represented by the electors in the "electoral college". Each states number of electors determined by the states population.
Each state is a "winner take all" so if a Presidential candidate wins over 50% in a state with 14 electors.. all 14 electors go to that candidate.
I understand your concern as there could be serious consequences if we don't get this right and allow our system of government to fail.. or even falter..

This is really a problem - we in Switzerland have the same problem not with the election of our Bundesräte - they are elected by the parliament, no direct election through the voters. But we have direct democracy concerning many issues. We are organized in cantons and have two Ständeräte per canton and only the Nationalräte represent the number of citizens of the cantons. And very often the little cantons win over the cantons that are the most populated if the Stände-mehr counts. Our advantage is that we have not an only person who represents the State, but seven and these have to decide together, that makes our State slow in decisions but more secure. Thank you for your kind explication and your good wishes. I wish you all over there good luck and a wise decision for the next election of the president. (I hope my english is understandable, I decided not to choose deepl.).

I’m almost 60 years old and in my lifetime the U.S. has never been any close to being this f-up. I am afraid for my kids and grandkids!

I do think just blatant distrust of everyone to fill a narrative is way too convenient, to the point I'd question my thinking and wonder if I'm deceiving myself of learning anything truthful. Consider keeping open fluid thinking and it'll help get you to a more accurate truth. It shouldn't matter if you like it or not. Too often I hear "they", "them", "republican", or "democrat". If you want the truth, why does any of that matter. It only hinders your efforts. I find more and more people don't care what the actual truth is though...

Democratic institutions in the US have not functioned democratically for a long time. Our policy regime is functionally a plutocracy. Now the most radically insurgent faction of it, representing a very narrow set of power interests, is shamelessly trying to seize the whole thing for itself. It's been a four or five decade seige that has succeeded in the gradual erosion of democratic institutions, and the current escalation is just the latest point on that trajectory. No one in public office is acting to avert future coup attempts like this. So I expect to see a permanent "President" placed in the Oval Office fairly soon, with extensive partisan purges of public officials as well as shutdown of many public institutions.

I've never felt so pessimistic about my country. It doesn't have anything to do with political ideology; rather, it's about sanity vs.insanity, and the fact that the insane have so much influence on the course of our civic life.

For better and/or worse, our civic life is based in a two-party system. The 1968-1976 period was the high point for the most extreme elements of the Democratic left; records show thousands of bombings (mostly of govt buildings at night), along with sit-ins and demonstrations that often became violent. But statistically, these sentiments were on the fringe; consider the fact that Richard Freakin' Nixon got elected twice during the period, taking 49 of 50 states in 1972. There was a lot of political tension, but the center was certainly holding.
A recent YouGov poll shows 81% of Republicans believe the current President was fraudulently placed in office; they believe this in spite of mountains of evidence to the contrary.
A recent Daily Kos/Civiqs poll showed that 56% of Republicans believe the Qanon conspiracy theory is "mostly" or "partly" true.
As recently as 2020, more than half of Republicans polled didn't believe Barack Obama was born in America.
I could go on and on. The essential point is that democracies can't function in the absence of a widely-shared reality. What's new is the ability of anyone to spread misinformation around the globe with a few keystrokes, and a hyper-competitive media environment that leverages our tribalism and our attraction to controversy to generate revenue.
@@Anthonyprinciotti I'd consider myself a centrist, but from my view the left-wing has a complete dominance of the narratives from the media, complete corporate backing from essentially all major sectors, and an extreme elitist distain for right-wing or populist perspectives. You can not expect your opposition to behave rationally or conventionally when all available methods of enacting legitimate conventional change are completely dominated. Even if there are mountains of evidence to the contrary for election fraud, how are they supposed to accept them as fact when they come from an ostensibly liberal corporate and social media? Unfortunately, it's become commonplace to claim bias simply as a means of rejecting information one doesn't like. This conflation of opinion with fact is really cancerous to our system, which was designed to make reason the foundation of our civic life.
Finally, the notion of a "liberal media" is often asserted, but rarely substantiated. The biggest cable news channel is Fox; conservatives dominate talk radio. Facebook is filled with conservative feeds. I could go on and on.
It's never been easier to find consistently accurate information; we're responsible for making the relatively meager effort it takes to get it.

Even if what you say is true and in spite of any bias liberal outlets have they only report true factual information with no regard for their own agenda, their open bias creates a perception of duplicity to the opposition destroying their credibility. The conflation of opinion and fact might be cancerous, but it would not exist without ostensible bias and the partisan hostility that accompanies it. Corporate sponsorships also destroy the credibility of our media with a perfect example being CNN being openly sponsored by Pfizer and running negative stories about Moderna while having surprisingly little to say about any negatives associated with Pfizer. This scenario is in no way unique to CNN, but it highlights the absurdity in expecting journalistic integrity.
I honestly don't understand how you came to the conclusion that Facebook threads, AM radio shows, and a single mainstream cable news station are enough to dismiss the fact that all forms of media are dominated by liberals. Late night shows, social media platforms, every cable news station besides fox and a few fringe networks, sports media, academic media, and essentially every celebrity in Hollywood are undeniably worth more than whoever replaced Rush Limbaugh on talk radio and some Q-Anon facebook groups run by geriatrics.

Rule number one: If you have a crazy idea that you want to sell to the country, start by selling it to the segment of the country that already believes crazy things.

Like what anomalies? 2020 certainly has to be the most examined election ever. Georgia did three recounts (overseen by Republican Secretary of State), and all times confirmed Biden victory.
Of over 50 court cases brought by Trump team challenging results all were thrown out by mostly Republican judges.
There is one huge problem with how the U.S. conducts elections: the electoral college. We need to eliminate the electoral college and have one person, one vote … period.

This nonsense began building to this moment decades ago. In many ways the fascist appeal of a person like Trump was inevitable. It just was waiting for the right match. I’m 68 and truly feel that I’m witnessing a new Amerikan epoch.

Republicans know they are a dying breed. The younger generations are liberal and the older republicans are dying.off, so they are doing everything they can to purge people of color off the voting rolls. They will exhaust every opportunity they get to try and stay in power no matter how corrupt it is.
