I have to add that when I was a young boy they were broadcasting the entire McCarthy hearings. I remember watching when one of the senators stopped McCarthy and asked him, "Sir, do you have even a shred of common decency?" or something along those lines. There was nobody else in the congress building at that time, McCarthy and the TV operator were the only ones there. McCarthy kept rambling on but the American people watching the TV agreed with the senator. Common decency would have prevented all the firings, suicides and ruined lives that Roy Cohn (notorious for his dishonesty) and McCarthy was responsible for. Regular people were accused of being communists and it ruined their lives. And I'm not talking about just a few people, this was a lot of people that had their lives turned upside down because of these spurious attacks.
