Sekhmet - The Mistress Of Dread, Goddess Of War & Divine Retribution | Egyptian Mythology Explained

- The Egyptian goddess Sekhmet was a deity often associated with war, medicine fire and divine retribution. Often going by many other names, Sekhmet was one of the daughters of Ra that constituted the Eye of Ra alongside the Egyptian goddesses Mut, Bastet and Hathor.
The goddess Sekhmet whose name means the powerful one in ancient Egyptian language, was often depicted as a solar deity with the head of a fierce lioness with the body of a woman wearing red clothing, and on top of her head was a solar disc and a Uraeus which linked her to the Kemetic kingship and the goddess Wadjet. In Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet also known as Sachmis by the people of Kemet, was the goddess of war that led the pharaoh's armies to wars, she protected the pharaoh against his enemies and played a major role the celestial life of Egyptian pharaohs.
At the city of Memphis, she was viewed as the consort of Ptah, and the mother of the gods Nefertum and Maahes. The lion goddess Sekhmet was often linked with the cat-headed goddess Bastet as they both shared similarities, However, contrarily to the goddess Sekhmet who represent death and divine retribution, the goddess Bastet was a more motherly entity associated to fertility and the home. But both Sekhmet and Bastet played the same role in lower and upper Egypt.
As many Egyptian gods and goddesses, Sekhmet had also a benign personality, where she is often seen as the goddess of medicine and thus the patroness of healers and physicians of all kinds, goddess of disease and healing. Although she was known as the goddess of disease, earning the epithet ''lady of the plague'', Sekhmet could also save people from diseases.
The most popular story about the goddess Sekhmet, which in a way also tells the story of her birth is when the sun god Ra sent forth the eye of Ra in the form of the goddess Hathor to exact vengeance upon men. Once she reached the earth, the peaceful goddess Hathor turned into the fierce goddess of divine retribution, Sekhmet, in an ecstasy of slaughter. But then Ra realized that she had to be stopped for the sake of humanity. Ra managed to tricked Sekhmet and saved humanity from the Sekhmet's wrath. Later on the goddess Sekhmet returned to her father but had to be pacified with music, dance and drunkenness.

Praise Sekhmet! ❤️
Thank you for beautifully representing my beloved Patron Mother. May she lay your enemies at your feet and bring healing to your ba. 🙏🪷☀️🦁
🙏🏼💜🙇🏽♀️🙇🏽♀️🙇🏽♀️💜🙏🏼
i’m just learning about Goddess Sekhmet & believe she may have given me a warning. i may finally have found what i’ve been looking for.
You, a warning, and me it feels like a message, I was distracting myself with Numerology, did the math on my real name, and it came out to the order of 1-8-9
Desire-Personality-Destiny
And I went back to my other journal where I did all the other mythological Gods, to make the connections to who is who in each cultural border
And I matched up perfectly with Sekhmet & Ptah, then learned they were consorts with one another! Super cool stuff😊
She's went to war for me more than once.
It’s so funny to see the similarities between the mythologies. Sekhmet, Athena, Kali, Innani all have similar attributes as war goddesses.
Or Pandora as bringer of evils upon mankind.
Anat (Egyptian goddess) is closer to Athena and Minerva then Sekhmet is.
Kali is more about wrath than war though right?
Kali is the embodiment of Durga’s wrath, she is the deity of time and death…
I do think you mean Maa Durga
Because all mythology and religion comes out of ancient kemet or as most people know it today Egypt. Every culture just has their own take on things
There's a correspondence with the fairy queen in Northern European lore. They believed her court held the knowledge of healing but it was believed elves would shoot humans who offended them with invisible arrows causing nightmares and illness
Sechmet blessed be the GREAT GODDESS🐅
Egypt has a bunch of great goddesses besides Sekhmet as well (Isis, Hathor, Bastet, Nephthys, Mut, Nut, Neith, Anukis, Taweret etc)
Thank you!!!!
@@BRIDEOFCHRIST-kd2nl Who are you thanking?
@@js1423 You for your blessings.
@@BRIDEOFCHRIST-kd2nl Which blessings? It seems your a Christian, but this thread has been about Egyptian goddesses
Today we continue our Egyptian series with a member of the Eye of Ra, Sekhmet, goddess of War, medicine, fire and divine retribution...
This is serious thank you again for the video 💙👍
Could you translate to Arabic, please???
❤️
There's something about Egyptian mythology and folklore that always makes me feeling in awe, with a slight sense of dread. Probably because many of their gods and stories have a close symbolic relationship to death, and life after death.🤷♂️
Next to Greek mythology, Egyptian mythology I love to read about. Keep up the good work
I feel like my spirit animal is Sekhmet. I am a Leo after all. I'm a recovering alcoholic and I love music and dancing
Your not a nobody useless...be a brave courage
As a person who likes watching short things packed with knowledge that's easy to integrate/connect with - this was so good :)
I have an altar dedicated to Goddess Sekhmet. Ya Sekhmet Ya, Dua Sekhmet Dua. I am her and she is me.
I'd love to see
I tend to name badass female warrior type characters Sekhmet in the RPGs I play.
I wish she were here now. We need her.
"Sekmet is me"(Nov 1st) . . wow!!! Hahaha love it!!!!
Amazing video, I watched all your ads to support your work… the artwork on point as always, and the narrative makes it so easy to understand. Keep up the good work. As always, we stay curious 😎

your videos are always very intriguing.
some things are almost unbelievable
until you start doing your own research.
He has tackled a lot of different mythologies
Nice, but you've got a little wrong. Sekhmet was the one who was so blood thirsty, who Ra got drunk. When she fell asleep, Ra turned her into Hathor the Goddess of Love.
Do a search, you'll see
I am right.
Depends on which version you read but yes you are right.
Ra actually pulled some of her divine essence out and formed it into Hathor or Bast (no one really knows probably both at one time or another) Sekmet was still her own goddess after this she just calmed down
@@ryan1000011 it was Hathor. Afterr Sekhmet calm down she got mad at Ra for getting her drunk. Ra had Bast takeover fighting Apep.
This was❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥👑🌹
I AM so pleased to hear that you told mostly The Truth
Thank you so much I love it 🐯🌈🙏

Danke!
A Word!
Wow
Any time a modern story tries to make Anubis, Sobek, Ammit or Set the main villain of their story I think "Why not Sekhmet?". She'd be a great end of the world scenario where the main character would have to stop a villain trying to bring out her destructive side while simultaneously finding a way to pacify her.
Now we know what have you learned 👍🏽💌🌎
I love her. Rise my FIRE power!
That thumbnail picture of her is terrifying.
A fury so great Ra was shocked at it.
Thank U, infinite intelligence. ♾
Is there a video on Set?
Not yet, but it is on my list so stay tuned...
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
If you ever feel like your life is flowing through segments is it's sekmeht
Kali represents an outlet of natural feminine aggressiveness. That is why She and Shiva make a balance. They are a fulcrum for each others destructive powers. They to me, represent forces of nature.
Sekmet was just a powerful sorceress who enjoyed bloodshed and eating men. Interestingly Her mate was Ptah a Creator God.
Sekhmet kill anybody who wasn't didn't align with divine law
@@djholidaytv414 then the world would be empty
Of witches and such. Jinn are divinely created, so...
"Gne gne gne my goddess is better than yours". I suggest you grow up and actually learn something before you speak about deities you know nothing about.
Kali is Wicked and is doomsday and death!

Great video! Are you Egyptian by any chance?
I'm not Egyptian, just someone who is passionate about any cultural/religious related tale of the ancient world still existing even to this date.
@@afroemperorfictionmythology Nice. Here is a modern tale that might interest you about Sekhmet. In modern Egypt we have a tale of Omena El Ghoula which roughly translates to our Ugly(or ogre) Mother.
In 1903, seven Energetic young boys were playing over an old temple in Karnak and then vanished with no trace, weeks have passed until George Legrand, an Archeologist, thought of excavating the area for an underground temple and to the workers' surprise, there were the seven kids laying dead with the huge shadowy statue of Sekhmet looking down on them, rumers spread around Egypt that Our ugly Mother eats energetic children, and with time infertile Egyptian women would go to ask her for children
(The logic was that since she ate children she may also give children), Egyptian mothers would warn their young boys not to be soo loud and Energetic our they will attract sekhmet who will kidnap them(and later eat them).
Ever since then Sekhmet has been sorta revived in Egypt with the descendants of her ancient worshippers calling her
Our Ugly Mother
@@ahmedanubis that was quite interesting, thanks for sharing this.
I think Sekmet was a symbol for the chaos upon the planet after the Younger Dryas Comet Strike. And here replacement Hathor was a symbol the return to agrarian culture. Notice that Hathor is displayed standing on a lioness.
Dua Sekhmet!
a word
❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊
Sehkmet is here
The pantheon is actually not a polytheist system they are more a representation of human psychology , thede"deities" take on several archtypes, but theres always 1 God thats seen as actual god. The rest are more akin to heroes and angels. Indeed the chief monotheist God of egypt was probably RA,
That said reincarnation also issnt unique to one religion hence the cross looking similar to the ankh.
The reddish drink that got Sekhmet drunk was a kind of strong beer dyed red to look like blood.
its wine
I've heard wine mixed with a bit of human blood to trick her into thinking it was human blood.
It's 5:55
Since you said leave a word, the word I’m going to say is: perpetual
I sorry for not drop a comment I thought I did great video but I apart of her heritage divine feminine 👁️ of Ra
Possibly representative of our animus?

OK so u might find this very hard to believe but I only speak truth and I was so very excited to learn of this video and let me tell u why my friend Not very long ago when I made a very bed mistake I was just a breath away from death and I did something I never did before I quit literally cried out For God to forgive and save me Well the very moment my cry ended Lilith and Sekhmet both showed up in my life Lilith did not stay but a few days after but Sekhmet has never departed altho she keep her distance and stays mainly in the trees behind my home watching over me.She talks with me at times but not often she mainly stands watch over me along with many other but they don't say anything one of them looks exactly like some of the paintings of the God's with the big head dress and he is very very large and super tall. They never leave my side as far as I can tell.Ok my life has been very different from the day I spoke of untill now and I am no longer the same man I was when I almost died.I Wish I could tell the whole story but it way to much and some things I just can't talk about but this I think I can mention I was told today that I will meet her sister soon and we will be Married and Set up a New Kingdom. God's Kingdom 🙏 So u tell me AM I TELLING THE TRUTH.
EITHER WAY ITS A HELL OF A STORY RIGHT!!!
I think the first hed of the spink was hers.
