Not everybody can do the headstand. I could do it at the beginning after only a few minutes, but i know, i have mostly pain in the neck or in the shoulders 8and sometimes in the neck) for weeks or more when i do it.
I could do splits after a few days as well at the beginning, but now my joints ould suffer from it, even if my muscles are stil enougt flexible.
Well, it is maybe because i'm 57. =)
Being very flexible is a good thing in the youth, but it can bring easily osteoarthritis in the long term.
A friend of mine has allways been stiffer, than me, we danced together and she never could do full splits.
But now she is 60 and still dancing very well, i had to stop with 40 ... And have now, i think, oseoarthritis in the hip joints.
Sometimes, a little bit of natural stiffness is better as an easy mobility then it protects the joints !

When you reach middle age, you no longer care what other people think of you.
And when you’re old, you realise, everyone was just thinking about themselves all along.

HERE IS THE DEAL! Almost anyone can headstand... WE PROMISE! I know it's hard to believe but it's true! It's just all about working your way up.
Some people can learn in a day and some will take a week or more of doing "the dolphin" exercise to build strength and stability, but both of us in yoga retreats and trainings have seen people who claim it would be IMPOSSIBLE, slowly come around to accomplish it themselves!
Also a great tip is to grab a partner in your home to work with you on spotting and it can become a super fun achievement for both of you.
    Just be careful.
DON'T push past your comfort zone.

Now i'm double this age and i'm not able to do an headstand or a shoulder stand anymore without horrible pain in my neck for years afterwords.

@@sabalight6470 wrong. Yoga is for everyone and every age. What people don't realise, the postures (asanas) are performed to achieve higher level of meditation. Each asana has different significance to health and mind. It can affect you alot if done correctly. Because Yoga is westernized (no offence), this meaning is dulled and gymnastic aspect is glorified. It's a shame really. :)

    • @sabalight6470
      @sabalight6470 Před 3 lety +13

      @@drpalashasardesaipt You are right !
Yoga isn't here to accomplish some postures to every price ! But to listen to the own body.
I think like you, yoga, specially in the internet, seems like a kind of gymnastic, where some one has to work towards a goal, and accomplish it, and this goal seems to be the perfect posture.
      To PERFORM something.
But the most important is to listen to YOURSELF, and never compare to OTHERS or to how the posture may be looking from outside...
Poison is as well to compare your posture (or which postures you are able do or not) with your capcities of your younger you, the "you", you were years ago.
The most important thing in yoga is to ADAPT the posture.
Yoga isn't coming from God, it was created by humans, who didn't know exactly the anatomy of billions of different persons all over the world.
Every body is different, and many postures are impossible for some types of bodies.
So is the childs pose very bad and very painful for people with hip hypermobility or hip impingement. The must avoid it instead of ignoring the body and the pain. For some of them, the adaptation can be to bring the knees wide apart from oneother by this posture.
The same thing with the shoulder stand. When your neck is very fragile, don't do it. When it is just a bit fragile, a thick blanket to elevate your shoulders can avoid the pain, but it doesn't work for everybody.
The headstand isn't a posture for everybody either.
Even when you avoid to let much weight on the head, headstand can bring pain to the neck, when you are fragile, and for people who have tendance to have frozen shoulders or had it in the past, or have some shoulder inpingement, it can come very quick when you do the headstand.
For those people, it is better to do the dolphin, for a few eeks, a few months, a few years, or for ever, you can never know.
But first of all, the own soul and the own body must come back in the first place, and not the pictures of perfect traditional postures or the competition with others (or with the things, one could do in his past)

Great tutorial. I would say some tips were missing, like correct head position (that is one of the causes you are tipping over your back) and also protecting your neck, correct way to roll over if you lose balance when lifting both legs, why lifting your legs quickly would create momentum and make you roll over, and also adding mobility routines, cause as we all saw that 's a key component, not just raw strength. I am still a newbie but i found those tips really helped me achieved a controlled headstand, cause I knew what i was doing wrong or what i was missing. As Boho said, you get better with practice, so don't give up quickly. For newcomers i would suggest not using intertwined fingers as described here. I first started using that hold, but I rolled over my back few times and most of them I cracked all my fingers at once with my neck, only ending with a sore finger (lucky me). So I decided to use a fists hold instead (you make fists in both hands and put them close like shown in the video, leaving both my thumbs free so i can give an extra support to the back of my head if needed. Hope everyone can achieved it, cause it really feels great when you do it. Cheers all.

I am new to this, so you can imagine how awkward I was following along with you. At the end of our session together, though I did not obtain complete success, I felt good about introducing my body to new positions and strength development techniques. Thank you. I enjoyed every minute of an intense session. Intense for me, that is. LOL

Took me two years to get the headstand right. At first I was practicing against the wall and was too afraid to balance using my forearm strength. It was demotivating really to feel like there was absolutely no progress in getting this posture right. But as I kept practicing for like 2 minutes a day, I am now starting to get used to balancing without the support so I'd say this is a challenging pose and everyone goes at their own pace so don't lose hope and keep practicing!

CrystalJo I would recommend at least 10 min practice / day. 2 mins are like warm up. I did 10 min/day and it took me 1 month.

    Morning Quarantine Goal (1:50):
Context: Somewhat fit young female who is terrified of headstands
Day 1: Wow this is hard! I stopped at 3:30
Day 2: I stopped at 3:41. Gonna try again tomorrow!
    Day 3: I did it til 4:12.
Day 4: I skipped it, because I was running late.
Day 5: Did it til 4:12 again!
Day 6: Got lazy. Sorry, I didn’t do it.
Day 7: I did it til 4:12 twice! I'm going to do an arm workout today!
Day 8: Arms are so sore! I did it til 3:43. I did my abs workout!
    Day 9: Stopped at 4:10.
    Day 10: 4:11
Day 11: 4:11 with extra practice
Day 12: 4:10 with an arm workout
Day 13: 4:12. I’m getting closer to it! I’m not strong enough to hold it yet, but pushing off my bed made it easier. Did abs workout.
Day 14: 4:13. I did a headstand for one second and fell over 😆
    Day 15: 4:11
    Day: 16: Rest day!
Day 17: Much easier than yesterday! 4:10
Day 18: Getting close! 4:11. I did it and lost balance again. When I did it against a wall, I realized I put too much weight on my head. I think I need to build my arm & abs strength before I keep going
Day 19: Ughhh it’s my period. I’m going to take a rest day,
Day 20: 4:10. Gonna do upper body workout. I did a headstand for a bit again, but I still put too much weight on my head.
    Day 21: 4:01.
    Day 22: Rest day!
*Day 23: OMG! 😃 I can do it with back support! I did an upper body workout!
Day 24: 4:08. I’m so sore from my arm workout, so I’ll try a headstand again it a couple of days.
    Day 25: Rest day!
Day 26: Did it against the bed for balance support. Gonna do upper body workout today!
Day 27: Forgot to do it
    Day 28: 4:00
    Day 29: 4:02
    Day 30: 4:10
I’m going to take a long(ish) break from this and come back to it when I feel like it

I've learnt to headstand in a day, even though I have to kick my legs up. I'm too unflexible to ''walk my feet up''. I could stay a few seconds on my elbows, after my sister helped me with my legs, because i can't even kick them up, I feel like my shoulders can't support my body weight and I freak out. As a result I've begun to work on my flexibility, using your videos, they help a lot, thank youuuu.

This is definitely something I want to work up to. When I was a kid, I was a dancer and a gymnast, but when I was 37 I had a rollover car accident.
Yoga has helped me so much with my pain management. But I don’t feel like things are over for me. Somewhere in there, my body still remembers my old flexibility. I see it showing up from time to time (I can still do the splits at 47) but I have yet to build the confidence.
Thank you for making this accessible and practical.
