If you are feeling down about your own practice after watching this or any other video with Laruga, please know that she has been practicing Ashtanga CONTINUOUSLY since 1998. Time and dedication get you here. "Perfection" is not the object in yoga--growth is. No matter how slow your progress, no matter how far you seem from being able to achieve even a simple pose, you are reaping as much benefit as the next yogi as long as you are approaching it with an open heart and working with your breath. Even the most advanced yogi will never stop growing.

I mean, she's pretty ripped. Did you mean women don't need big muscles to be strong? Because women, even straight-up power-lifters, don't put on "bulky" muscle the way men do. Not enough testosterone for that :). I see this way of thinking a lot, and I guess what I'm saying is don't be afraid to weight-lift or work on strength if you're a woman. Even insanely strong ladies (like the woman in this video) very rarely have that Schwarzenegger look.

@@k.kirkland9796 , what Laruga demonstrates are asanas from the first 3-4 series of Ashtanga yoga. This is also what I've been practicing for two years now, until Nakrasana. I am aware that this is a short amount of time. However, as someone who is neither long-limbed nor particularly skinny/strong/flexible, I still stand by what I said.
According to the descriptions I find at various blogs and forums, my body is all ''wrong''. But in the end, not like it matters - because neither of these asanas is anatomically impossible. Dwi Pada Shirsasana, Kapotasana, Karandavasana - you name it. Provided that you practice with a qualified teacher, none of these is either dangerous nor impossible. All it takes is time and dedication.

I had three disc prolapses (the 1st at my 30th birthday...seemed like an omen: you're getting old now, dude.) over a a period of 10 years, even though I've always been engaged in sports of various kinds: judo, basketball, bicycling. Until a year and a half ago - that's when I began practicing yoga on a regular basis - I'd been thinking for years that I always would have to live with backpain for the rest of my life. Now, at 47, I've been free from pain for several months. But the physical benefit is just a nice side effect...what happens mentally and spiritually when you get deeper into it is the most exciting trip one can imagine.
