You do realize that the band members aren't just marching in formation, but they're playing instruments to make the music you hear... The band members practice the show for a week and then perform so there is essentially a new half time show every home game. They also may perform at an away game depending on arrangements with the host school. There are regional and national contests for high school (high schools also have marching bands that perform half time shows) and college marching bands.

Yes! Great points. I'was in high school marching band for 4 years. It was fun but also hard work. We weren't allowed to have printed music on the field, have to memorize several routines at a time (home game vs away game) and I played a totally different in marching band as I did in indoor band. We did get invited 2x to play halftime at the Cleveland Browns (NFL) games. Yes, I am a true "band geek" lol.

Marching bands are part of school and university football culture. Growing up, our high school had a marching band that performed during halftime and also played along as the cheerleaders did their chearing. Then, if our team won, which it did a lot, the band led the students and spectators through the town on a victory march. There are different types of marching bands. There are the ones like this and others that do military type formations. I went to a Texas A&M game that has a cadet program, and they did the military precision formations. It was amazing as well. Not only are these students carrying out these difficult routines, but they are also playing instruments the entire time and keeping up with their school work.

    • @majkus
      @majkus Před 6 měsíci +2

The band tradition goes back to ROTC (military officer training) programs in colleges and high schools in the late 1800s. And of course, marching bands go back even farther (the 'drum major' was a British military officer in charge of the drum corps. When marching in formation was important to an army). Texas A&M, one of the few remaining military colleges, carries on the military thread of the tapestry of band traditions, with their spectacularly precise drills that defy the laws of physics. Another offshoot from the military tradition is the 'Drum Corps International' competitive band performances which have grown less military over the years-but DCI bands and others still twirl plastic rifles instead of batons. I am not quite sure when the practice of the band forming pictures (instead of just TA&M-ish formations) on the field began, but I suspect it was in the 1910s or 1920s, the same time that bands moved to music departments and out of ROTC, and also when 'bleacher stunts' like card stunts began to be performed. As you point out, bands and cheerleaders or yell leaders are kind of inseparable.
If there is a good comprehensive book covering the long history of U.S. band traditions, I would love to hear about it. If not, there should be.

Thank you for this amazing comment! You should write that book and I will buy it immediately!
I am in my 70s, and my community was very into band and choir cultures as well as patriotism. It was right after WW2 and during the Cold War. My brother was in ROTC during HS and college and joined the reserves. I can still feel the pride of watching him march after he finished boot camp. I remember wondering how the heck they taught him to march as I spent hours trying to teach him to dance, lol. I twirled my baton to John Philip Souza marches and loved every minute of it. I sang in the choir, and we performed The Battle Hymn of The Rebublic at The Academy of Music in Philadelphia. I look back at those years, and I am still grateful for those experiences. We spent many hours practicing, and we were proud of what we did. The discipline involved was a great life lesson that carried on throughout my life. Thank you again for taking the time to reply. I loved it. I am disabled and homebound living with the amazing Katie, the kitty who thinks she is a dog. To keep my mind active and to keep negative thoughts away, I have some daily must dos. I must learn something new each day. At night, before going to sleep, I think about something that brought me joy that day and something I was grateful for that day. It is amazing how life is full of good things if you look for them. Your reply hit every box today, and I thank you.

Ohio State grad here. The OSUMB always includes at least 1 dig at Michigan University (please excuse my cursing) during every performance. This show included 2. Once when the T-REX ate a guy dressed as a Michigan ( again, please excuse my cursing) player and then spits out his helmet. Second time is when OSU sinks their ship.
I have to explain the 'cursing', no Buckeye ever says Michigan (cursing again). It is considered foul language. We instead always refer to them as "the state up north." The rivalry is the oldest in college sports. It began on October 16th, 1897.

The Ohio State University calls their bad TBDITL (The Best Damn Band In The Land). They are widely regarded as the best marching band for halftime performances. They basically learn a new performance one each week. The best view of them is in the upper seats when you can appreciate the choreography. They are known for their script writing of Ohio. Watching how they make it look like cursive writing is pretty great. Remember they are playing instruments whilst doing this. Check out their Michael Jackson tribute as well as their performances in Wimbledon for an NFL game. You will understand why they are The Best Damn Band In The Land!

This is not the best college band. There is no such thing. It varies from week to week and show to show. But they are very, very good. You have every reason to be proud of them (I would be) but it isn't even a complete marching band without colorguard, majorettes and dancers. Writing for them requires a skill set for the staff and designers that OSU doesn't even attempt. This leaves your band lacking somewhat in visual effects and crowd appeal in spite of their otherwise flawless performances in playing and marching. It is like a priceless painting without a frame.....still priceless but not quite complete. All of that being said, I am so happy when these kids have fans like you supporting them so just keep on insisting that they are the best!

@@user-up3ux9jx7c Please do not make me laugh. What competition declared OSU Band the best? Just curious? I am not the final say but I have been an instructor, judge and auditor for numerous marching bands for over 30 years and when I did march years ago, my group won the World Championship. I marched trumpet for several years and independent color guards. I have also had continuing education instruction from Hall of Famers. I have stood on so many sidelines at so many NCAA games (mostly SEC) that I couldn't count. I have attended various regionals and finals of Drum Corps and WGI since the 80s. I am through being educated. I am retiring. Sorry, if you were offended by my remarks but there are many good bands; granting yourselves a title doesn't make it true. OSU Marching Band is consistently one of the best In the land. That is all I will say based on my experience. I would be thrilled to claim them and you should be proud and supportive. Every team needs that.
BTW, the Metallica Light Show performed by my alma mater this year beats anything OSU has done so far. I am proud as well because I am objective and they finally did it! They beat everyone with that show! It now sets the bar so high that Auburn may not ever be able pull off something like that again. Oh, and they did it with a colorguard, dancers and majorettes to beautifully frame the pictures.

For big university marching bands like this one (and there are many) they hold try-outs for marching band members. By that time most have at least 4 years experience in high school and perhaps more in younger years. As others have said, the band plays the music you hear live on the field . . and all of the prep and practice happens outside their university studies. This is like an intense club. I was in my High School Marching Band for 2 years (also in Ohio) as part of the Color Guard (flag, baton, ribbon, and rifle twirling) and I can confirm that high school marching band is grueling work. We prepared and practiced for MONTHS before parade and football season starts. Including during our summer break when we had band camp - which again, grueling. People truly underestimate the work and dedication it takes to be in a marching band.... hours and hours and hours in the heat, cold, sun, rain, snow, muscles aching, sweat dripping down into your eyes, going back and forth on the field to learn every foot placement and every movement of your body over and over again until it becomes muscle memory because each and every person needs to be in sync (you can't even march in place if you're not supposed to - it can be seen and its a major no-no during band competition... I should know, I got called out for it).... and my school's Band Director lead us with a tough military attitude she learned when she was actually in the military and part of the Military Band. I don't know if it's just an Ohio thing but marching band is taken seriously in many circles and perfection is expected, even in high school, perhaps BECAUSE our college band - the Ohio State University band - is so heralded throughout the country. (The Best Damn Band in the Land!!!) Just as high school football players are scouted out by college teams, the marching band department scouts out exceptional band members as well. It is a whole thing that causal football fans probably know little about.

I'm going to age myself but back in 1982, the Minnesota Vikings NFL team did invite our high school marching band to perform the halftime show at one of their first games in their new stadium, the Hubert H. Humphry Metrodome. The "dome" has since been replaced by US Bank Stadium (2016). The Vikings stadium is considered to be one of if not the loudest in the NFL. The crowd cheers to interfere with the opposing teams QB calling out plays effectively.

So cool to watch a European watch and like a video that showcases a great aspect of American culture: college football. In the US, we absolutely love college football, we are rabid about it. It's a passion, a tradition and a love we have not only for the sport, but for what it represents to generation after generation. People outside the US don't fully understand why college sports in the US are of such great importance. So, let me explain to you why it is.
    1. For thousands of financially challenged kids can only dream of getting a good college education, because they cannot afford it. So, they look for scholarships through different avenues. It could be through academic excellence or the arts in high school or, in this case, through sports. My son got a full scholarship through swimming. He represented his university as a top American swimmer the way many other thousands of kids do in our country. So, as you can imagine, the nature of competition in sports is also carried into the pride of competiting for your school. There are old rivalries between schools in the US. So, a college football or basketball game is the coolest way to demonstrate that pride and rivalry.
    2. Traditionally, people who graduate from their respective colleges carry that pride with them for the rest of their lives. They live, breathe and carry their pride for their Alma Mater all their lives, and pass it on to their children and grandchildren. In many cases, their kids end up going to the same school as their parents and grandparents. It's tradition! That's why college football games are so huge and stadiums can have larger audiences than professional football. Everybody goes to the games, your family, parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors, to support your respective kid. Its big.
    3. Although there is every imaginable sport in college, like swimming, water polo, diving, equestrian, track and field, volleyball, golf, tennis, soccer, skiing, and many others, the most important ones are by far the big 4: football, basketball, baseball and hockey. They are also revenue ($$$$) producing sports, meaning that they generate income for the colleges. They collect a lot of money through ticket sales, memberships and more, and that money helps the university set aside millions of dollars to attract future athletic students, and offer scholarships. Colleges also compete for the best athletes to come play for them to carry on the tradition. The kids you see in the marching band are also on scholarships that football ticket sales generate.
Now you have a better understanding of why college sports in the United States are of such importance. If you want to look for other traditional college football rival games, no better games than those where Georgia Bulldogs play against Florida Gators, or Texas playing Oklahoma, or Ole Miss (Mississippi) playing Alabama. Have fun!

I know Jon Waters, the man who developed and directed this show. What happens is that the show is designed on a computer program that divides the field into one-step squares. The marchers are issued tablet computers, which can show each individual marcher exactly where to go and when they need to be there. Most college marching bands perform halftime shows, but Waters is considered to be especially creative.

I saw this for the first time last night so you've probably already gotten these answers. Sorry for any duplication in advance. I happen to live in Columbus, Ohio where Ohio State is located. You are correct, we are very proud of our football team :) We are even more proud of the marching band. That's why we call it "The Best Damn Band in the Land" :) You are also correct that Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverine rivalry is close to, if not THE most famous college football rivalry in the USA. It began in October, 1897. I have to commend you that you knew every movie, including the Eye of Sauron in Lord of the Rings. I've seen half a dozen of these first view videos for this particular video and NO ONE but you knew the LOTR answer! 10 points for Griffindor! :D PS...I also agree that college sports are far superior to watch over professional sports. So much more passion and spirit! :D

It might be hard to plan, but if you visit the USA, I HIGHLY recommend going to a large university football game. If you narrow down where you want to visit (Midwest/Chicago? Go to a Purdue or Notre Dame game. South? Try University of Georgia or Auburn University. Florida? University of Florida, Florida State University, or UCF - Uni of Central Florida). A rivalry game is best because the atmosphere is even more....MORE. The season is August through December (with "bowl" games on New Years. Bowl games are championship games, usually in warm, sunny places so the students can enjoy New Years in Miami, or Phoenix, or Atlanta.

My husband and I were both in band, he started in 4th grade in a small town where everyone was in the same band, 4th through high school. Once he graduated, he ended up at the University of Oklahoma in their band from 1974-1978. He played trumpet. The big rivalry for OU is the University of Texas. If you go check out 10-07-23 OU vs Texas Halftime - Pride of Oklahoma, you'll see the OU band playing Metallica's music. Big sound. I played flute and oboe in my jr high and high school band, then did a year at West Texas A&M in their band. We've had almost every grandkid in band, tuba, two flutes, a saxophone, trombone, French horn all in our grandkids. My husband, who also plays piano, played for their solo competitions as accompaniment. My daughter in law played French Horn in high school (her kids were tuba/flute). One of our grandkids was in choir and is currently a music therapy major at Texas Tech.
Go explore other bands, there's a lot out there, different styles, all good. Glad you're finding out how much fun American College Football is and especially the bands. (oh, and the last song the OU band plays as they go off the field is their fight song, Boomer Sooner).
