The OSU band refers to themselves as ""The best damn band in the land!"Many of the highschools in the US have marching bands that also perform at halftime at their football games. Many Ohio highschoolers aspire to join the OSU band. It is a big honor to be the sousaphone (tuba) player to dot the"i" when the OSU band spells out "Ohio.,"

I miss doing field shows. The adrenaline starts pumping and , no matter how cold it is outside, you come off that field soaked in sweat. I miss that.

Texas A & M is more military patterns but awesome to see the precision. All of the colleges in the US have marching bands, but OSU is the best. Gail

As someone who was in marching band (but not this one) the steps and the music are more easily remembered together. The repetition does the hard work of memorizing both.
That's the part that is beaten into you. The hard work is mostly the time spent, in the past, and during the marching season. Learning to play, learning to march, but mostly the time overall.
As an MSU (Michigan State University) fan, and my husband is a UofM (University of Michigan), Ohio State is our rival. But I do admit, their marching band is second to none! They’ve even travelled to the UK to perform!

I've seen other examples but this is the first time the camera angle showed them backing up and stepping sideways so close you can see what is really happening.
The OSU Band played halftime when the NFL went to London.
I really think you will enjoy when they performed the halftime show in London, England. Professional American football teams play in London
I am a life-time Buckeye fan. My parents met at Ohio State and married while they were students. I lived in Upper Arlington (a suburb near the campus) until I was 18 .In fact It was within walking distance to the stadium. My grandfather donated money to BUILD the OSU stadium back in the 1920s. I have Buckeyes in my blood, even though I attended the University of Florida for my own education. I began attending Buckeye football games when I was 7 years old. The members of the band work for many years to acquire the skills they need to be in the band. Most start learning to play their instrument when they are about 10 years old. They play in school orchestras and when they are old enough they join their high school marching band and learn the basics of how to march. (Things like always lift your left foot first; 8 steps for every 10 yards; the proper way to hold their instrument while marching, etc. ) After playing and marching in their high school band for 3 or 4 years, some may be accepted as students at OSU. They may try out for a position in the band. It literally takes years of training to do what they do. One of the most famous routines they do several times each football season is the "Script OHIO". It has been part of the band's tradition since the 1930's; it is worth watching (simply search on youtube to find a video). Sometimes they perform it during the pregame show; and sometimes it is included during a half-time show. Also, you should take a closer look at the Ohio State drum major (the guy in the red suit who performs with a baton). There are youtube videos about the OSU drum major as well. There are other excellent marching bands, but Ohio State is TBDBITL.

You should look up Drum Corps International. It's basically professional marching band and they have a yearly competition with all the corps that qualify.
My personal favorite are the Caveliers. Especailly in the early 2000s. 2002 was their highest score ever I believe.
Except the OSU band members are not professionals and are all students at OSU.

For a great show, the bands of the HSBC schools that play in the Southern Classic put on a great show. Grambling State and Southern University bands really go all out.
HSBC, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, has never had a significant influence on marching band culture in the South. HBCU's on the other hand put on a great show.

I was a little confused for a second, but I think you're correct with your correction.
As someone who is from Michigan (blue flag at Mario’s castle that went down) I have to give credit to this band. Something we know very well in Michigan is that those from Ohio (armpit of Michigan) can really can blow.
You can't imagine the feeling of being there! Hope when you come to the states for a visit someone can get you tickets to an Ohio state game. You'll see so many bumper stickers on cars that say TBDBITL. its a salute to OSU marching band - the best damn band in the land!! And they are!

I don’t care about sports. But I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and I feel very strongly about the band. They are the best in the world. No band is comparable. You will be disappointed if you look at any other.

I've seen a lot of videos of the Ohio State Marching Band but this is the first one where there were many shots of the Drum Major, what an impressive show he puts on and usually never gets the attention he deserves.

Fun fact, to my knowledge, the only team in the NFL with a marching band is the Baltimore Ravens. Maybe they are worth a video? Its one reason that I became a fan of the team 15ish years ago.

I love watching these, they remind me of my sister. She played the quints (a set of 5 drums held on by a shoulder harness). She was rather petite back then, so by the end of the season it was always funny-her shoulders were huge compared to the rest of her. She was quite talented.
The crazy part is that they don't even get to enjoy seeing it live. They truly do it for the fans.

I lived in Ohio most my life so I'm proud to be Ohio State football fan. Also great video as usual love the honest content. The music band is also another great video to watch, just search Michael Jackson band

Every autumn I put a university/college football game on to listen to while I do other things because it evokes such great autumn in America vibes. The marching bands, the cheering fans, the whole thing has its own unique sound.

when I was in High School my hometown, Miami, hosted Super Bowl 13 and I was in the band of my school, Miami Coral Park Senior High School, and we were part of the halftime show....it was a blast to be at a Super Bowl and be part of it !!!!

Think of a marching band like an army in close maneuver. The percussion line is artillery, the horns are rifle blocks.The movements are meant to dazzle.
NFL has cheerleaders/dancers and Superbowl has Professional Artists perform like Adele, Shakira, Usher.

The Ohio State Marching Band is literally known as "The Best Damn Band in the Land"!! TBDBL!! They are awesome! I've been a Buckeye since I was born 70 years ago! Win or Lose (they rarely lose) - The Ohio State Buckeyes Football and Marching Band are the very best!! I love my Buckeyes!

2 of my cousins marched in college. One was in this band, the other marched for Texas Tech. Yes, Michigan has a band. I currently know kids in the marching bands at Purdue, Indiana, Notre Dame, and Ball State.
OSU traveled to London England several years ago and performed at a pro game. It was one of my favorites. Also the band members change every year as they graduate and new freshman come in. My Son went to OSU and this makes me proud. You may underestimate the rivalry between xichigan and OSU.
Even high school bands in the U.S. are remarkable. My local, rural school has a marching band of over 140 students!
My roomate was in the band and it was almost a full time job. They practiced for hours a day.
I was part of the Illinois State Marching Band. It was hours and hours of practicing in all kinds of weather. Only lightning would get you off the field because the Tubas were moving targets. LOL Practice would begin a week or two before students would arrive on campus. So, we got to beat the move-in rush the other students had to deal with.

You should visit Ohio, a very nice Autumn with the colors, great State parks and the worlds best amusement park which is beside Lake Erie (a large fresh water lake with many sunken ships). Just don't go in the Winter.
The "M" flag at the end is for Michigan State... Ohio State's hated rival... they knock it down like Bowser's flag at the end of a level.

My in-laws are native Nebraskans; so, my husband & brother-in-law are both Husker fans, even though they're native Kansans. Kansas State beat Nebraska the first 3 years that my brother-in-law was a student there; thankfully, Nebraska finally won his Senior Year.
Check out Texas Aggies Marching Band and Michigan Marching Band. I don't think either of them are quite as good as Ohio State but they are still very good and worth taking a look at.

But for some, once they get there, pride gets i in the way. C.J. Stroud is a recent Ohio State Buckeye quarterback that lives up to everything the game is about! ❤❤❤❤❤

Yeah, football is okay... but my heart goes to the marching bands. There's so much time, effort and passion to make a show for half time.

I always wondered why NFL didn't try to make marching bands a bigger part of their entertainment (probably bc tv commercials pay more) but I'll always prefer college football over NFL because of this!!!

When I was a kid TV broadcasts of college football games included the halftime marching band performances. When they decided to cut that from the broadcast and just had sports casters dissecting the game or previewing other games, I stopped watching the games. I could listen to my local radio for my team’s game and skip all that 💩. I love a good marching band and they are big part of the American football tradition.

I believe college football is better than the NFL. The reason is it represents local communities, who are more passionate. And can be active supporters for a local team that they can't for a pro team. There is something special about college sports.
When you said that this was better than the game, I think Ohio State beat Nebraska 62-3 in that game.
Because these are kids. Kids in college in the marching band. The NFL is professional and its a business strictly football. College football has way more layers to it. Athletes go to school. Band members go to school. So bands in the nfl just doesn't go together. Cheerleaders are ok for both but not bands . Sometimes though the nfl will invite highschool bands to the games to play. But all in all the halftime shows are for college football

The NFL doesn't have bands because they don't have students.
This is a college band made up of students, just like high school and middle school bands are made up of students.
Many of us start marching band in middle school (5th or 6th grade) and continue through high school. If we're good enough, we can get a college scholarship which helps with tuition.
I live in Alabama and my city is known for hosting The Mid South Marching Band Festival. It's only for high school bands and is the largest competition in the Southeast. Jacksonville State University of Jacksonville, AL is the only college band to perform there, but only for exhibition. We'd get so excited to see them and have them blow us out of the stands with their amazingly clear sound.🙂
My high school, which no longer exists, was known as one of the best bands in the Southeast, years ago. The Emma Sansom Rebel Band.
Marching bands are extremely common in the USA, so you will find that most Americans were in a marching band, had a relative/friend in a marching band, or simply love watching marching bands. Furthermore, we see frequently see marching bands because they perform at our high school and university sporting events, all parades around the country (big and small), and for competitions. Because of how common it is and how 'band geek' is used as a stereotype across the nation, a majority of Americans know how much work a marching band will do for each performance, the skills and talents required, and the dedication from each band geek... I would bet >90% of Americans think marching bands are so normal that they would be extremely surprised if they found out that they are really only in the USA and some parts of Canada.
