I was in this band. We had three hours of practice every day except Sunday during football season. The show is done during halftime. It was considered a sport in and of itself.
Kudos for remembering the routine. I was in high school marching band and I understand the struggle.

From what I understand, the OSU band members learns their routines two weeks prior to their halftime show. The guy in the middle dancing is the Drum Major (kind of like the Captain of the band.) Many of us were in marching band in high school; I was in the Colorguard (Flags). OSU is an amazing band, and yes, they are playing the music while making formations.
Just watched several of your reactions to the Ohio State marching band. And yes, these performances happen at every halftime of football games.
College and University bands are comprised of students who practice these routines outside of their scheduled classes, and perform at the weekly games (usually on Saturdays). Generally we learn a new routine every 2 weeks. The larger the University often means that we travel to away games as well (across the state, region, even the country).
I am an alumni at one such large university with a great band that has a very active alumni band. Every year our alumni return and perform a joint halftime show with the current marching band. Quite often our alumni band is invited to perform all over the world. I actually had the opportunity to travel to London one year to perform in your New Year’s Day Parade (2015). Forever being part of such a prestigious organization will always be the highlight of my college years.

The guy in the red is the drum major. Very prestigious position in the marching band. Every school, college and high school, has a marching band that performs at every football game during the season. Yes that is the band and only the band playing the music.
How does someone become the drum major? Do they try out for it and get based on their music abilities, do the other band members chose them?
Yes, OSU band is ALL BRASS - no woodwind instruments! Each member is playing their instrument and marching !!

The Ohio State Univeristy is only 10 minutes away from my apartment. The Ohio Stadium can have over 110,000 people in the stands! The Ohio State University Marching Band is known as "The Best Damn Band in the Land!" College/university bands play during the half time break in the game to give the fans some entertainment during the break half-time of the game.

You should also check out some of the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges/Universities) Bands. They have a little different Style and their Drum Majors are the Coolest . Check out JACKSON STATE OR 😢FAMU OR PVAMU. My Nephew is currently playing Tuba in the PVAMU band, so of course they're my favorite 😊

Many home game have a half time show. The Super bowl half time show is done by celebrities but others are done by marching bands especially for colleges and high school.
Every university that has a marching band does this at the halftime of their home games and sometimes at the away games
its sooo good because you see the front knee bend during the moonwalk, you see the 1-2 yard jut out where his butt should be, they paid attention to detail and still choreographed everything so well. BDBITL
Actually the guy in the red is a feature twirler, who also leads some marching. He's twirling a baton and apparently OSU only has one twirler. The drum majors are on the sidelines you can see them directing if you look back. In high school where most marching starts 9-12th grades you do have a game each week in the fall and there are 2 bands, 2 flag corps, 2 twirler sets, and a drill team( large group of pretty girls who dance to a tune the band plays. Both high school bands perform usually the guest or away band 1st. So most of the time you face your home side so they hear and see you best. It's a competition just like the rest of the game and yes you boo the other side(even though adults try to stop it) In university often only the home band will play for all but a few games. I think we had like 3 away games each season in college as it takes a lot of money to take the whole band and all to another state or part of the state. Meaning in uni the home band does most of the half times and therefore like this, its longer for the home band as you aren't competing with another band. HALFTIME. It doesn't happen at the beginning-sometimes there' s a shorter pregame thing for the band but halftime occurs between the 2nd and 3rd quarter(there are obviously 4 quarter. It's a time where the coaches take their players to the fieldhouses and go over how they've played and what they need to do next to when and generally eat them out for anything stupid they did and or try not keep them from getting big headed for the good stuff cuz the game's only half over and they don't want to lose. Sooooo the bands and drill teams and so on come on and put on a show for the audience to pump them up for the 2nd half of the game and give them someone to cheer for and boo for and just show school pride. The uniforms in my day were wool, eveybodies everywhere were, and by the time you've sat and played through 2 quarters and then marched a show you are really hot and sweaty until about Novermber(for me I was in Texas and it often stays hot, but when it does get cold even wool doesn't quite do it so temp wise the bands gonna lose. It's great fun though, we play current tunes and the school fight song for scores throughout all quarters and starting at the end of the 3rd we start back and forth informal contests with the other band(for uni only when you have an away band) It's something you always remember and it's a way lots and lots of the towns kids get to join in and sort of be apart of the whole football/community thing. Your work up probably from 4 to 6 shows a season and mix match parts and the whole thing leads to contest which is a state wide or competition where you try to win the trophy for your school and everything supposed to be perfectd(never is but we try) Usually thats in November-well in Texas anyway. You've had Ohio state, they march showstyle. Others like Texas A & M which you had march military, you can see the 2 stack up. Show is more fun, but military is actually harder to get right. My high school started military and when show after 2 years and my university was always show. In high school it's long hot days in August for band camp and then each day after school till 5:30 or till you get it right and the director gets off your back so you can go home for your homework. In college you do practice a good bit but nothing like high school Students in college have college level classes to maintain and most have to have jobs to help get through school and then labs and whatnot so you can't give practice as much time. You just have to get it right, but you sort of can by then as you've been doing it since you were 14 or earlier and know what's going on, Anyway that's way too much description but it's how it works, and how we try to get everyone involved in the school/community. Tell us what kids in your schools do for band or sports and how they get everybody involved.
Most US high schools, colleges and universities, as well as the branches of the military, have a marching band, but not all of them rise to the superlatives that Ohio State has earned. Have you watched their tribute to Harry Potter? Even more amazing, IMO. Enjoyed your reaction.
L3WG, 'this guy' in red is called the drum major--sort of like a roving conductor. Yes, 100% of the music is from them. Anything less would be dishonest.
All of the universities do this type of show. It's just that some are more spectacular to watch than others. In fact, this is even done by high school bands across the country.

Most Colleges perform a band routine before the Game and at halftime,and yes it is fun to go to College football and basketball games.These Universities are where the professional football and basketball players are recruited from.
You should Definitely check out some DCI groups (I recommend Santa Clara Vanguard 2018 and Blue Devils 2019😮💨)
I never imagined that a foreigner would enjoy a marching band halftime show. It had never even crossed my mind to ask if anybody would. This is so heckkin cool! Lol
You should do a video on College Mascots. There are many that are remarkable and lead the college team onto the fields. Check out Texas Longhorns, Georgia Bulldogs, Colorado Buffalos (my college). Don’t miss the contests between the military academies: Army, Navy, Air Force. HUGE!. Colorado Buffalos actually run a Buffalo down the field before the game!
I was on my HS marching band in Columbus Ohio. We copied OSU, and they all knew who we were. We learned a new half time show with all new songs every week. We pretty much had it down pat in 3 days. All songs memorized and all of the formations. Not sure with college, but they do sometimes have back to back home games, so I am sure they do the same thing. Learn it all pretty quick. I mean if us high schoolers could, they could do more with the extra years of practice. It got to be pretty easy to memorize the songs quickly.
Oh and that Drum Major in the middle, he is twirling a heavy baton. Not like a girls baton. This one has weight in it and our DM went to OSU to learn the same skills.
Go Bucks!!!! Almost all colleges have marching bands but OSU is by far the best. Have been on Apple commercials and there is video of them performing halftime show over in London at halftime for the NFL game played there. You may like to watch that one as well. There are several other ones as well that are well know you can still watch.

The loan guy is the Drum Major, AKA leader of the band, they learn both new music & new choreography fora every home game. I don't know how they do it. And most colleges have marching bands. Ohio state is just known for their talented band.
The music comes entirely from the marching band. They are carrying their instruments, which some are heavy, or cumbersome. Imagine keeping a tune, and march in form at the same time!!!
Yes, the marching band has to play the songs and work together to form these complex pictographs on the field at the same time. I know my high school did the same thing during their games.

Texas A & M is another university with a great marching band. In fact most colleges have marching bands just not on this scale. Ohio State and Texas A & M are known for their marching bands. Check out vids on Texas A & M. Really enjoy your reactions vids. Keep them coming.
I’m sure it’s all been explained before, but just in case… these all happen at half-time, so in the middle of the game, while the players get a ~20 minute break. During which injuries are treated, equipment repaired, tears in gear repaired or replaced. And maybe most importantly, they regroup and rethink the game plan to adjust to what the other team has done so far. If you’ve screwed up enough for a coach to notice, you will be well, uh, “informed” about it shall we say lol.
Anyway, back to the band. They will usually have a new show worked out for every home game. While these average out to about every 2 weeks, they may go 3 - 4 weeks straight of home games, so only 1 week between each new show.
At my college of choice, the University of Tennessee (Knoxville campus), otherwise known as UTK to instate people, or simply UT to everyone else, the band has other duties too. They play along with the players walking into the stadium, which is a traditional thing where players walk in through the crowd cheering them on. They will form the giant “ power T” it’s called, that the players run through on their way in. They then go to their spot in the stands and play music between plays and our song “rocky top” after every score. Then again at the end if we win, along with various songs to close out the game as people exit.
I think all US universities have marching bands like this. Ohio State University is recognized as one of the best, though. High schools have them, too.
Almost every high school and college has a marching band. So much money is put into athletics that they have to offer some money to music in the form of a band to appease everybody that isn't an athlete..

Band half-time shows are not just college. They are also in high school. We had practice every day after school and music had to be memorized.
They do a different theme every game at home

❌️ All colleges alsob have a mascot. The one for Ohio State College State Football is Brutus Buckeye - The man in the red you're watching may be him ❌️ To your question, almost all, if not all colleges, and many high schools have their own marching band, and many have elaborate shows like this ❌️
He is the Drum major
They have to do all that while carrying and playing their drums and huge brass instruments. And it's not like you're going to use that skill out in the world when you graduate. I doubt there's a huge job market for the choreographed, Stadium sized Michael Jackson marching band simulators.

Here in West Virginia (the Best Virginia), all the junior high & senior high schools have competitive marching bands. I started in Elementary school. I remember the first Christmas parade my class marched in lol We couldn’t have been any older than 4th grade omg we were frozen. The band director told us to leave our coats & scarves behind so our matching sweaters would show. Clarinets cannot be played while wearing gloves . We had cheap thin Santa hats … holy crap I’m starting to recover repressed memories. The flutists lips were freezing to their flutes. 😂 it’s not funny 🤷♀️ oh god it hurts BAHAAAA NONE OF US COULD MOVE OUR FINGERS. JACK’s trombone was the only thing that we could get to w make noise & it was hideous. At 9-10 yrs old, we were unable to see this fiasco as anything other than humiliating. But hot dang it’s funny now. We marched and pretended to play along. Jack’s trombone & the snow-crunching of 120 snow boots was all there was to be heard from us. We were all crying and shivering and snotty nosed by the time we got to the end where our parents were … oh, how I loved the 1980s! 🎉
No. All high schools across the country and all colleges with a football team have a marching band that performs at football games. This band is the absolute best of the best. All those members were the best at their high schools and have been doing this a minimum of four years by this time. And high school marching band is insane. My daughter is a sophomore in high school in percussion and they have 13 to 14 hour practices in the summer to prepare. But they're a good band. I was in it in high school and we had 2 hr practices for three days a week and no summer or weekend. And if they had tried, they'd have had no band. I don't understand it. My brain cannot fathom why or how anyone finds this fun. The vshow is amazing, and my daughter seems to like it, but that thought is just way too foreign to me. I like the shows and am impressed with the dedication of all these people bc I couldn't do it.
