Universal Audio VOLT 276 Interface Review / Explained (vs. UA610 Tube Pre)

  • Today I walkthrough, explain, test and review the Volt 276 and discuss when you might want the Volt 2 over the Volt 276. I also compare vintage mode to the LA610 tube preamp and compare it to the Audient ID14 and SSL2+. This thing offers a 55dB gain range, an EIN of -127dBa, sufficiently powered headphone amp, direct monitoring, midi I/O, and that vintage mode & 76 style compressor

Honestly - your efforts are absolutely not wasted, but I think you know that. These are real world comparisons, and though they are done over video one can still hear the differences. I used your comparisons to buy a mic for my stepdaughter who is currently attending the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. As untrained as I am, I still was able to get a huge amount out of your comparisons - enough to make a decision. Thanks. She has a very solid voice with good low end. I went with the TLM49 (vs 103) and for versatility the UA710 as she is also an instrumentalist and has a few other mics like the 102 for that. We'll see. I think it is a solid platform for now.

recently got an analog voice channel and i'm kind of glad I didn't see this video first. I'd be plenty happy if I went with something like this just for the compressor but there's just something about the modularity of an analog channel strip that really makes the audio sound worth it.

    Great review.
Would like to suggest a video where you test if the SM7B has enough power when recording on a phone/tablet(Android if possible)?
For context, I am a blind musician. I find that mobile recording software are enough for my use case. It also helps that they're a lot more simplified, and are Text to Speech friendly. I was gifted a Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen and found out that it can run the SM7B on it's own(no CL/fetthead) when I watched a Julian Krause review on it. I'm interested in getting the SM7B because other mics can't handle the sound pressure of my loud vocals. I am also not able to sound treat my room.
Stay healthy and cheers from Philippines.

All I know is that with vintage mode and the vocal compressor on I actually am finally liking the sound of my vocals. I'm recording into a Neat King Bee in a mostly untreated space, just using very close mic technique and I am shocked at how musical UA made 6:1 compression sound. Fixed ratio is nothing bad, the LA2A is fixed ratio, just turn up your input or "gain" in this instance. Honestly could do some faster processing though, my Behringer umc202hd avoided pops at lower latency times

So niche case, but may be applicable for some: I was run my interface through a KVM switch built into my monitor in order to use speakers and mic with two computers. I was using an SSL 2 which had a tendency to lose connection when switching computers and required the computer to be reboot. I decided to try the Volt to see if this resolves, and it did. I experience no dropped connections. Headphone audio also sounds better on the Volt, for what it's worth.

What I'm interested in is the job which has to be done after recording. So my question is: how is the 'output signal' afected by these audio interfaces? Which one is cleaner in the output? I have to say that I'm a beginner and maybe my question has no sense, but yes, this is what I look for, a audio interface whit an clean output. Thanks!

It's a shame UA didn't provide a separate compressor drive control. As it stands, the preamp gain is the only way to control compressor drive level, but that also controls saturation in Vintage Mode. Practically, compressor drive would have to take priority.

Thanks again dude. Excellent vid as always. I really really really want to see a collaboration between You and Julian. A podcast once a month discussing you rfavourite gear and experiences would be awesome and mutually beneficial to both of you. 2 different styles but very similar in attention to detail. Having said that. I am on the fence over the SSL2+ & the Volt 276. I use the SM7B a lot due to my recording evironment, so the gain in the SSL is appealing but I think both drive it comfortably. I recently purchased the ID14MK2 but quickly sold it on as it has a lot of issues mainly around drivers. I think any interface north of the $250/$300 price point should be including ADAT expansion as a priority as a lot of users would appreciate the flexibility and expandability of the feature. In the end though, after watching this and Julians video on the Volt 2, me thinks I'm a going to choose the Volt 276.

Quick question: Regards the Motu M2/4 and the Volts, which one has better preamps and signal output, (in a musical way)? Thanks ;)

Sir please 🙏 I need a valuable piece of information . Does the akg d5 with compressor on generate a lot of noise like the sure sm7b because I think the recorded signal with the sm7b is not usable. I have the samson q2u and with the focusrite solo first gen gives very clean gain 👌 but the dac in this interface is not good 😐 and with volt using the compressor it gives very noisy signal .so will the akg d5 good with the volt using the 76 compressor?

First of all, very good and informative videos.
Currently I am putting together my audio setup, until recently I had the Motu m2 as a favorite. But some said that I should look at the Volt 2 as it is also very good.
Is the Volt 2 better or more worth it than the Motu m2? which one would you prefer?
Mainly I use the interface for gaming & listening to music and maybe I'll start streaming soon.
I think the Motu m2 would still be the better choice what do you think?
    Great work keep it up!!!

I read you need at least 60db gain for the sm7b. does this have enough gain for the sm7b?

Hi Bandrew and thanks for all the info which helped my choose a Volt 476... 4 lines of everything would have been nice. I'm about to get a Lewitt LCT 640 TS for stereo. Would it get too noisy plugging a 276 into my 476 to get another 2 channels of comp and vintage for my GAP R1? (I'm guessing yes)

Oh nice design maybe inspired by some old Dieter Rams and Braun products. Wish there were more things inspired by them.
