  • Volt audio interfaces from Universal Audio are designed to compete with the Focusrite Scarlett, Audient iD14mkii, Motu M2, SSL2, Presonus Studio, amongst others. Boasting Vintage mode and a real, built-in, analog compressor, class-leading preamps, converters, and headphone amplifiers, the Universal Volt Audio Interfaces are definitely worth considering.
    Hear how Vintage Mode and the Compression sound in this video.

    I enjoy that UA is giving people tools to MAKE music and not learn mixing too much. Back in the day we used such minimal gear from just Tube amps, slow compressors and Noisy Eqs and with this harmonic content it will change how the musician hears themselves.

    5-pin MIDI is a must for people who are playing electronic music live with a number of different modules/synths. Having 5-pin MIDI on board is a major selling point for me, (one less box to bring to a gig) and one reason i’ll be picking up this interface.

    I’m glad you regularly bring up the functionality of being able to adjust the mix (daw output vs mic levels). For me, this is an absolute requirement in an interface (on the hardware or in the software); my old guy ears need it. It amazes me that most reviewers fail to bring it up.
    It strikes the Volt off my shopping list along with the Motu M2. The M4’s got it but at another price level.

    Dear Ed, I have used a MOTU Audio express for years. It still works, although some lights no longer work. The UA Volt 476p has caught my attention. Mainly because of the ability to re-amp your signal, including the 610-style preamp and the 1176-style compressor. I watched your video about this.
    My question is: if I switch to the Volt, will that mean a sonic upgrade for me compared to my old, trusty Audio Express?
    Thank you in advance for your advice!

Considering UA is trying to fill the gap in the lower priced audio interfaces, esp still being usb 2.0, I don't see the need for these interfaces. If I become more serious with recording, id def upgrade to the higher end UA interfaces (arrow, apollo). I really like the idea of having an analogue compressor for colouring my tracks and I was wondering if this one could work as a mastering compressor too? Hi there, and thanks. I’ll be honest I didn’t like the NI when I reviewed it 2.5yrs ago. Volt is definitely one of the best sounding in this price range. I’d suggest getting a designated stereo compressor for mastering, it’s unlikely you’ll match the gains exactly on two individual preamps, and you may introduce phase shifting if their EQ curve isn’t identical. I’d also avoid anything Behringer, personally. Check out the Warm Audio Bus Comp, that’s great for the money.

I am wondering if I should grab a Volt or stick with my Scarlett solo for mixing on my older Mac Pro (El Capitan and waves 9.6). I will track guitars, bass, and vocals on the MBP through the Apollo and MBP but I have a lot more plugin options for tweaking the mix with waves (Not going to pay for the upgrade) on my other machine. Final mix/mastering back on the MBP 'cause the UAD included plugins are just better than waves.

      It’s the same converters in the Volt and Scarlett so the difference won’t be huge for monitoring. However, however UA have integrated the converters, the Volt monitor outputs do sound better and the HP is better too imho.

    Over the years, i’ve owned alot of the entry-level/budget interfaces to use as my mobile setup when i’m travelling. I’ve owned the scarlet, audient id44, audient evo, ssl2+, and motu m2, and after hearing this demo, I’d 100% recommend the Motu out of all at this price point. Although the analog circuitry of the compressor and vintage function may seem cool, I see it more as a gimmick, similar to the 4k button on the SSL interface. There are free plugins and stock DAW plugins that are far more flexible and sound better at compression and thre “vintage” sound. If you like the sound of the interface, go for it, but dont be suckered into buying it on the vintage mode or compressor. The software bundle it comes with will get you further than those. Aim for an interface that gives you the amount if ins/outs you need, has enough good-clean preamp gain, good latency/direct monitoring, and enough juice for your monitor and headphones. I’ve been buying gear for the better part of 20 years

Dont get reeled in by the ginmicks. Just my $.02

      @@DieTabbi If you absolutely want a hardware compressor, there's a ton of options, even inexpensive ones like the FMR RNC go a long way. But honestly, there are a ton of free plugins that get the job done quite nicely, even the stock ones in most DAWs perform pretty well. It's just my opinion that a compressor circuit added to an entry-level interface is not a selling point that would make me pay more over comparable interfaces. I'd rather buy an interface that performs equally as well in the primary duties of an interface, for less money, and use a free software compressor or either buy a dedicated hardware comp. I have a lot of gear in my home studio (not much that's considered budget or entry level), so I'm not trying to bash this interface, just giving my opinion since I've been down the road of getting caught up in gimmicks or hype when I was first getting into pro audio equipment.

      @@DieTabbi Sure thing, no problem. I haven't used this UAD, but I see they offer a cheaper version without the compressor circuit. That may not be a bad option, but I still can recommend the Motu overall. It has all the features I needed, sounds good, and is built very solid. The SSL2+ checked pretty much all of those same boxes, but didn't have enough juice in the headphone amplifier, which was a dealbreaker. The Audient ID14 mkii is also likely one of the best contenders in the sub $300 price point. I've had the ID44 a while back and really liked it, just wanted to try other things out. I liked the Audient Evo as well, but it felt like a toy, and not having separate knobs for different controls wasn't the best for me. For what it is, it was pretty cool though, and very small so easy to take wherever. Try downloading a free LA2A style compressor to learn. That's probably the easiest style of compressor to use, just two knobs.

    I only listened on my phone.. but I found the vintage and compressor settings a bit harsh. I tend to trim 4-6K on vocals and guitars as this is always the ear biting harsh area for me..where everything builds up...guitars vocs Amd drums/cymbals. So I'm not sure I might be inclined to just use the clean setting to let it sit back in the mix more. Add vintage plugins I can tweak after the fact. Thanks, Jay. The Apogee Duet is a considerably more expensive interface, likely because it has better parts and converters. The pres are flatter, I dare say lifeless - but some desire such neutrality. A better comparison would be Duet 3 (new version) VS Apollo Twin X.

      Vintage mode and the compressor will offer some nice recording variations but if you already have four channels for recording a piano (close and wide/room stereo for example)I’d say there’s no need to change.

    I have a focusrite Scarlett and an Apollo solo and a presonus 24c,which I pretty much chose bc of the midi connect. If I could have got the same A to D conversion (if it is in the Volt?) and the good preamp and compressor in the Volt, I would have just kept the focusrite skipped the 24c and Apollo solo and spent the extra money on a faster computer. The DSP you get with the Solo isn't enough to really do much more than if you just had a faster computer, in my experience. Their plugins are great; but not the only great ones around.

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  Pƙed 2 lety

      The plugins are great but other brands are catching up, I agree. The Solo is fundamentally flawed with only one DSP chip. IMO the Solo should have been a one input device with two DSP chips.

    • @canna-comedyculture5790
      @canna-comedyculture5790 Pƙed 2 lety

      Is the A to D conversion on the Volt on par with the Apollo Solo? My Solo turned into a one in, after a few months, when the one input broke. So, I've been mono on the input anyway, but I probably wouldn't have bought the thing if it wasn't at least a 2 in (originally!) I didn't realize that most modern computers can already handle recording in through a couple of plugins already. Which, as you mentioned, with one chip, is all you are gonna get anyway.

      Hi Peter, the Solo needs a USB-C (3.0+) cable to supply 100Watts of power. USB 2.0 cables only supply 60Watts which isn’t enough for these devices. The Volts run on USB 2.0 with enough power 🙂
