Samsung Odyssey G5 Review! One of the Best Budget 1440p Monitors?!

  • The Samsung Odyssey G5 was somewhat of a silent release as I personally wasn't aware of it until it was brought to my attention from a subscriber but after having problems with the G7 I'm happy to say that this is a solid monitor at a great price point.
    *The price has dropped since my recording! It's only 349.99 right now for the G5, 699.99 for the G7 and 1399.99 for the G9. Of course these are subject to change.
    From what I'm hearing though most of the problems with the G7 have been solved for most people via firmware updates but keep in mind that monitor is 430 dollars more.
    Below are links for the Odyssey monitors as well as the Gigabyte monitor which comes in at the same price point with very similar specs. I didn't want to take up more time with the review to compare the two as I will be doing a separate video covering that.

      It accepts an HDR signal but it's implementation is total garbage. No local dimming, it tops out at 350 nits when at the very least need to be at 600 nits to be decent and it doesn't have a wide color gamut. It essentially has none of the three pillars of HDR. This monitor isn't even at DisplayHDR 400 which is infamous for being garbage.
      For all intents and purposes, it doesn't actually display HDR content.

      I've been happy with mine, it isn't perfect but it's a good screen. I've noticed on mine the backlighting has some issues where some areas are brighter in others, but I think that's due to the curve. Other than that I have nothing to complain about, I've used it for 10-12 hours a day as my main monitor for work for the past 6 months and it is holding up well.

    *But I grabbed a 75 Hz BenQ 1440p 32" IPS LED. I am in love. If Samsung didn't spoil my love for them, I would buy an Odyssey G series. But dead pixels, burnt driver boards, sections of screens artifacting, etc.*

    Owning one of these myself and having played with it for about a month, your review is right on the money. It's a lot of performance for the price, and while it's not the best, it's also priced quite a bit lower than the best. I picked up one of these on Prime Day in 32" for only $296, and for that I feel like it was an absolute steal for all it offers.
    I feel like the people that would really feel this monitor's limitations the most are also people that are hardcore enough to justify spending more on a monitor anyway. Anyone with reasonable expectations in the $300-400 price range could hardly do better than this.

    I've had this monitor for three months now and it has been amazing so far! Playing scenic games like Horizon or Read Dead or Subnautica has never looked so good. Unfortunately I can't really make full use of the 1440p res and 144hz refresh rate due to my gpu (I'm using an RTX 2060 so running smoothly on that res can only be done on less demanding games like Valorant or Overwatch etc. so for the newer games I have to bump it down to 1080p). Oh, and since this is 32" wide, it's an absolute knocker for movies too. And after watching this video, I got an ever better satisfaction now that I know I've bought the right product. Thanks so much 1 Up!

    • @FlickFlag
      @FlickFlag Před 2 lety +9

      @Aleis in Wndrien
      You should've gone with the 27" version for 1440p, as the 32" version will have lower pixel density at 1440p thus making the image look blurrier. Every resolution has a sweet-spot in size (typically 1080p - 24", 1440p - 27", and 4k - 32" and up, respectfully).

    Btw to anyone wondering. This monitor works on the Xbox series X, at 1440p at 120hz. I have it and can confirm it. The new Xbox doesn’t let some 1440p 144hz monitors get to full performance (1440p 120hz). This is Microsoft’s fault, but this monitor doesn’t have that issue!

I was hesitant on getting a curved monitor but now I don’t think I could ever go back to a flat display. I love this monitor and I personally haven’t noticed any ghosting. The only problem I have is trying to use HDR.. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong but every time I turn it on it washes out my screen. But HDR wasn’t why I bought this so it’s not a big deal. My only concern for 27 ”is the scaling problem of Windows, so if I use it at 150% because the texts are too small, will my image look worse than the 4K 32 inch model? Or will it have a disadvantage? I just ordered this monitor at 230€ without second thought. I'll keep it at 120FPS or I might even create a profile at 90FPS because I play all my games with VSync enabled.
    By the way, 1440p is for 27 inches top. Bigger monitors provide less PPI which sucks, blurry font rendering. The pure perfection is 27 inches at 2160p resolution, but you need an extreme GPU. It almost touches modern mobile phones clarity and the ~150 ppi is more than great in comparison to 90-110 we usually get at this price point.

    Buying this monitor tomorrow. So excited to upgrade to my first 1440p 144hz monitor. Been using 1080p 60hz with my Rx 6700 xt and figured its finally a time to treat myself 😅👍
    Edit: Got it. So much better looking than my old 1080p 60hz monitor 🤘 Been using it around 4-5 days now and it looks so much better than 1080p monitor. Also the curve is very nice. Takes a few days to get used to but i woudn't get a flat monitor after this. You somehow are more focused in the center of the screen because of the curve. Overall picture quality is amazing once you tweak the settings. Brightness is more than enough (300 nitts) i love it. If you're thinking whether you should buy this or not get it. A 34 inch ultrawide would be a better replacement for two 24 inch screens. This can do PiP and PbP if I’m remembering correctly but it still will seem off compared to the 2x 24 inch screens.
