  • @northeastfamilyadventures9186

    First thing I want to say is that we appreciate your reviews, and one of the main reasons is that you buy your own stuff, and we can be sure you're not feeling any pressure to say good things because some company spotted you some free swag. I think I mentioned it when we were talking PLBs a few weeks ago, and there was that review for the SpotX from the guy that got it for free. Just didn't feel like we could trust it.
    Pretty much, Teton sports is the way to go on this from what we see. I especially like the prank potential on the straps for the Leaf compression sack. As we're still getting our legs together on day hikes, we're not doing overnight backpacking trips... yet. But some car camping to get closer to some spots we want to hit is in the works, and backpacking is likely to commence next year. A good bag is key because we can see some really wild temperature swings up here. If I can ask, how tall are you, and are the Teton's good for someone around 6 feet? I ask, because I've bought bags in the past, and felt like they were made for people that were 5'8" at most.

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks JR! I really appreciate that! I am 6ft tall and each of these bags work great for me! They are all 87 inches long except the Ubon which is about 82. You can get the Tetons in a ‘scout’ size that is a little shorter. I’ve found this works well (and is lighter) for the kids. I agree that reviews of stuff that someone purchased with their own money to use seem to carry a bit more weight!
      Chloe and I have LOVED backpacking. I’m sure you and Aria will as well when you decide to go for it!

    Thank you for being so informative. These details have to be considered for a winter backpacker. Because ill go out into the woods for a long time and want the cold weather. Its like a drug and camping, especially winter camping, got me off of drugs. Still dangerous like meth and opiates, but much more socially acceptable. Hey we all have to get high in some way or another. My plan is to buy 1 pound of goose down for $16 and place it into a cheap 650 fp camping quilt (i prefer the camping quilt) so i can modify it to withstand 0°F or less comfortably. Delicate operation i hear as down will get all over the place if not careful but i have what i believe to be a rather clever method in mind to keep my room from turning into a disaster. Tedious but simple. Altogether feasible

    I bought a cheap rectangular Walmart bag from a thrift store for $5 a while back. I didn't even want the bag. It was the compression sack I was after, but when I took it out at home it was brand new and not a complete POS, so I hung onto it and tried it out. It's a 40 degree bag, so really a 50 degree, and with a proper base layer and insulated pad it's good for it. I was actually shocked by what a nice bag it is even for the full retail price (the closest I could find was $35) and it's probably going to be my summer bag this year because it packs down small and weighs only about 1.6lbs.

      Hi Josh! Thanks man! Can't tell you how much I appreciate that! In warmer temps I take the Trailhead or something similar but sleep with it open pretty far. Lately I've been more into quilts (just did a video comparing 3 budget quilts). The One Tigris one works well for warmer temps because it doesn't have much insulation but is just enough for those cool summer nights. But ya, I tend to just have whatever I'm using pretty far open and keep my vestibule open or rainfly off to keep it cool in the tent!

    Can you tell me what the numbers 250, 300 etc stand for with sleeping bags as the temperature rating is different from what these figures would suggest. I look at some sleeping bags but because it has these numbers rather than fill power or temperature rating I am put off purchasing them.

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety +1

      I haven’t noticed that. I looked up a few and the only thing I can think of is that it’s the model number or something. Doesn’t seem to have any relevance to the rating or size or anything that I can see. Temperature ratings can be tricky. Even when a company puts it in the name of the bag, it still might be an extreme rating or something-not representative of the conditions you’d want to actually use the bag in.
      If you can it’s good to get a bag that has an official EN rating, but a lot of smaller companies don’t do that.

    1:52 there is no opinion about it: cotton would _never_ be a good fiber for insulation in a sleeping bag. Also, I grew up pretty poor and we used the same Sears-brand car camping sleeping bags for years, they have synthetic batting insulation, yes they did have flannel as the inside liner, but the insulation was synthetic. I do a ton of thrifting and I look at the sleeping bags, almost every time I go. I find that The specs of the sleeping bags out there for wide people are in general measurements when the sleeping bag is flat. The true nature is for bigger people you need more shoulder wideness to compensate the dip your stomach protrudes up while sleeping which takes away some of the inches on the width. I think 38+ inches is the way to go because even if it is dead on 38 inches, the inner seam might take 1 or 2 inches. I unfortunately went with something alittle bigger and also expensive route with the Big Agnes Echo Rock. It can unzip to be use in multiple ways, weighs 3lbs, and has a thing where it hugs your sleeping pad so you wont slip off of it. Small details but it pulled me in. Other than that, Coleman, Teton makes great roomy stuff for the bigger person. Mmmm Staying away from mummy bags is also a strategy because mummy bags tends to contour closer to the body. BUT Quilts. Definitely Big people friendly.

      @@DoseofDirt So I'm 5"9, 290, and my sleep system is the Trekkology UL140 2.32lbs [10.8 x 4.9] (Wider sleeping pad with 4.9inch off the ground), Big Agnes Echo Park 40 Wide long 3lbs 2ou [8 x 6.5] The price range is around $250 range but I inadvertently made a semi light sleeping system. For the bigger people you have to spend a little bit more to accomodate for more material, fill, and if you don't wanna haul a 7+ lbs of material along with other things. BUT I think heavier sleeping equipment is fine because Bigger people can carry weight.

    You sleep in these bags without a sleeping pad? And what budget sleeping bag do you recommend if you do use them.. is there one I could grab for a four seasons?

    Very refreshing that you have a down to earth sense of what "budget" actually means! I do have to say, maybe it is time to update the video. The trailhead is *not* EN rated, just internally rated by Teton - their website shows this, and I've confirmed directly with customer support. The Leef 0 degree and 20 degree bags *are* EN rated. I would put the Teton 5 degree Sport Tracker bag at the same level as the 20 degree Leef. Really enjoyed the video, but like i said, the data should be updated.

    you have to be very careful when researching products on Amazon. There is so much false advertising.
    A bought a sleeping bag that they claimed in the title is a winter sleeping bag, but when I nearly froze one night I checked the stats only to discover its rated for 40 degrees.
    If the ground is 40 degrees that means the average air temperature probably wasn't less than 50 that entire month.
    I don't know who considered 50 F to be winter conditions anywhere in the U.S. or any place outside the equator for that matter.

    Doesn't want to spend $300 for three sleeping bags so spends $240 on for sleeping bags to find out which one to spend $120 more on. Genius.

      🤣🤣 That is hilarious! I have purchased some cheaper ones for kids to use on car camping overnights or things like that. Walmart has some good options in the $20-$40 range if the weather isn't going to be cold!

    For cheap bags, always add at least 10° to whatever the EN rating says there not liable to put the correct rating for the comfort,transition, and survival on their bags .

      Thanks, Gert! Ya, one reason I didn't consider the Coleman Silverton is because of the weight! I wanted this to be for backpacking, so anything much over 4 pounds just becomes too heavy in my opinion. But if you don't mind carrying the 5.2 lbs of weight, then I bet that Silverton is pretty warm! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
