    What’s up, Dirt Junkies! We all know I"m cheap, but winter backpacking gear can be expensive. I decided to put my budget zero degree sleeping bag (Teton Sports Leef) up against the more expensive Paria Outdoor Products 0 Degree Thermodown. I tested these zero degree sleeping bags outside on consecutive nights and used a thermometer outside, inside the tent, and inside the zero degree sleeping bags so I could look at actual data rather than just go by feel. In this video I'll give you an overview of both the Teton Sports Leef as well as the Paria Thermodown bag, and tell you the results on my tests.

      The full down Teton bags will give the paria a run for its money. And the Teton Atlos 0 down bag is amazing. I think better than the paria, bur more expensive at 249. It has solid stats, hydrophobic down, so ita good in wetter environments, 20 D ripstop shell, lofted foot box, zipper draft tubes, drat collar, 3 piece hood, great customer service, and a lifetime warranty. Teton is a great budget gear company, i passed on them for a good while, but they have neen surprising me lately.

  • @northeastfamilyadventures9186

    New studio room looks just like the old one! Super thorough review Jeff. I put a ton of stock in your reviews because you buy everything yourself and don't rely on the freebies (and invisible strings that come with them). From the early video, I thought for sure you were leading to a Teton recommendation. What a twist! At the end of the day though, for 3x the cash, the more expensive bag SHOULD come out on top for warmth, comfort, and weight. I mean, otherwise, why spend the extra bread? 88 is really impressive for heat retention though.

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks JR! Ya, I literally brought the shelf and rocks with me from UT to VA! 🤣 WE aren't in a permanent place yet, so just keeping things simple for now, plus it's just such a great place to hang all my bags!
      Ya, I thought about how Aria called me on always saving my fave for last, and decided to mix it up on her! 😂 And you're right, for the price difference it should out perform, but I think with a few tweaks the Teton could be more of a competitor.

    Hahahah bloopers are great as always! It's a tough gig making these vids for ya folks! Great budget bag showdown Jeff! Seems like Paria is the clear winner here even though they don't do the standard testing for temp rating (big negative). Lighter and warmer. Awesome use of the Thermo Drops! Ya, the Thermodrops were a fun addition to the testing!
      I tried a quilt for the firs time recently, and for non-winter trips, I think I'm going to go quilt from now on. But I tried it on a sub zero trip and it was just a little to tricky to keep the heat locked in. So for me, sleeping bags for the cold and quilts for everything else.

    Great video! Your vids are helping me find the right gear I need. BTW, did you try the Trazon sleeping pad with the bottom chamber blown up tight and the top softer yet? What did you think? Also is there a way to make your existing sleeping pad work better to in colder weather? Thanks!

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Kev! I'm so glad that the videos are helpful! It's a lot of fun testing out the gear and making the videos!
      I should have circled back with you! I DID try the 'soft top Trazon' method and it is definitely more comfortable! I've learned that I like the pad not quite all the way inflated, which works great if the pad has a good baffling system, but really exposes those pads with a bad baffling system.
      For me, I seem to really gravitate towards the horizontal baffling system, rather than one like the Trazon, but I think that is more of a personal preference type thing. But you're making me think about putting it bag in the regular rotation.
      As far as increasing the warmth of your existing pad, I think the best thing you can do is get a closed cell foam pad to go underneath your existing pad (did this on a recent backpacking trip). You'll see a lot of people with a Thermarest Z Lite, but Redcamp and some other 'off brand' manufacturers make something that's basically the same thing for a lot less (I think $25-$30 usually). I've read that R values are additive, so if you put that foam pad with an R value of 2 underneath your existing pad with an R Value of 2, then you have an R value of 4!
      I've also seen that some people put the reflective windshield shades underneath to try to reflect some heat back. I haven't tried this (or even looked into how effective it is) but that is another cheap option.
      My video next week is about 2 winter sleeping pads that are only $90. But adding a $30 foam pad to your Trazon would definitely be cheaper!
      Let me know what you decide to try out and how it works!
      Thanks for watching and your continued support!

    As well as the short one is 75” x 30” x 20” and weighs 3.85 lbs I take it on motorcycle trips I have a few bags and I’ll stick with this one it’s my favorite.. I have a few down bags and they are very costly and not worth the price I paid for them much harder to take care of.. and as far as Teton not having the collar well if it’s that cold I’d prefer to wear a Sherpa Hood Ski Mask in my bag it moves well with me and protects me and keeps me and my bag warmer..

    I always prefer more affordable gear. I use camping gear for more than 30 years now and my experiences, especially in the last 10-15 years are: if don't want something fancy, EXTREM lightweight or else, you better go budget line. E.g. my sleeping bags are:
    for summer (comfort rating about 13-15°C): a small high peak for less than 35,-
    for temp. to 5-0°C: Grüezi Bag for about 60-70,- (sell) - that's my "Standart"
    for temp. 0° and below: Snugpack for 55° (sell) - the only con on the Snugpack is, it's a bit "snug" ^^ so, you better are a bit wider buil (like me )
    All bags are bought new and lasted now since years.
    I also have an old great down sleeping bag, but cost about 180,- back than, it's rated like the Grüezi Bag, but it's bigger in packing size, not very lighter and definitely not more comfortable. So it isn't worth the much higher prize - little anecdote: the zipper at the expensive one only lasts about a year, so meanwhile it's a down blanket 🤦‍♂😂

No real experience in camping but love the idea (budget is small world will end I'll be out there alone) lol if I'm going camping would rather do it spring and fall not winter or summer my area winters are 30 ish ° on average my summers are 80° at night with 50° humidity... If you pick a bag that says 0° degrees and it keeps you at a smultering 88° would it be 188° if it was only 50s??? So I guess I'm asking if a bag could keep you warm at 0° would it dehydrate you at 50°?

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety

      Hey Shane! Ya, sometimes the ratings can be a bit deceiving. I wonder if the 0F is the 'extreme' rating. I think that's what they did on the Leef as well.
      Ya, the Paria has treated me well. I haven't taken it down to 0F, but I have taken it down to about 15F and it did well (with a good sleeping pad my base layer, socks, and beanie on as well). I have noticed that the down sometimes has to be moved back into the center of the baffles (basically where my chest is when I'm on my back). Probably because I sleep on my side sometimes. Not a big deal since I can just push it back up there ever few trips, but just something to note.

      Hey Ruthie! If you're a cold sleeper, I probably wouldn't trust it down to 15 degrees UNLESS you have some good layers on underneath the Paria. If I'm going down to zero degrees, I wear a good warm base layer, warm socks, my puffy coat, and a good beanie to stay warm. I don't mind doing that for extreme cold because it also means when it isn't that cold I can just use the sleeping bag without all the extra layers (Instead of having a sleeping bag that can ONLY be used for super duper cold trips!).

      I will say that the key ring it comes with is basically crap. So I ordered some "Nite Ize" S-Biners from Amazon. A lot easier to move from pack to pack that way.

      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety

      Hey Marcio! Absolutely! I love the thermometers and take at least one on every trip or hike.
      It's called the Thermodrop from Thermoworks. They are about $20 and so far it seems you can really only get them directly from the company:
      www.thermoworks.com/thermodrop/
      Also, the little keychain loop that comes with it is terrible. I replaced it with an S clip from Nite-ize, and it makes it really easy to move from pack to pack, or other locations: amzn.to/3vwHcgz
      The only thing to be aware of is that it takes a little while to sync with the ambient temperature (for example, if I take it out of the warm car and start hiking on a cold day, it will take 5-10 minutes to get down to the actual outside temp).

The Recharge XL has an estimated R value of around 4.5, so if it's going to be much colder than 15-20F, I also take my Thermarest Z lite closed cell foam pad (those accordion looking foam pads).

    30 outside is a heatwave winter night. So they must be rated for 0 celsius? If you get cold with a "0 degree" bag when it's that hot out, how could it possibly work when it actually gets cold? If it's only a 40 degree difference between the outside temp and the inside bag temp, then it's only going to be 40 degrees inside the bag when it's actually 0 fahrenheit.

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před rokem

      Yes, the Teton is rated as a 0 celsius bags, but I think the Teton is using more of the 'extreme' rating (meaning it will barely keep you warm in temp. The Paria is techncially rated as 0 degree F bag, which I wouldn't rust it down to, but it was definitely warmer than the Teton bag.
      I know what you're getting at with the 40 dgree difference, but I think there are a lot of other factors to consider, like how much heat I'm dumping with the neck all the way open, zipper open, etc.

    Comfort Ratings:
    Teton - 34°F
    Paria - 0°F
    Not a fair comparison from the get go. IMO Budget bags are often advertised at their limit rating. Since Paria thinks that the comfort rating is 0°F then I would like to see that tested in 10°F weather (want to give yourself about 10° buffer just in case it gets colder than expected)
    Since the Teton has a 34 degree rating and the outside temps were from 29 to 35 and you stated that you were initially warm and then cold in the morning. It seems that the Teton 34 rating is accurate.
    Still a great review video especially where you gave all the details.
