    The most attractive part of Guadalajara (to me), is the citizens’ dedication to education. They have an excellent University there & bookstores on every corner. If you go there to learn, you can expect a life-time of education from well-respected scholars.

      I wish I could like your comment more. It cannot be overstated that this is an educated city. As a foreigner I am motivated to learn the language more just to conversate with #thepeople. There are bars filled with people sipping red wine and reading books at 10 pm on a Thursday night. This is one of the allures this place provides.

    Welcome to GDL. I came to visit 3 years ago and haven’t left. After staying in Americana and Providencia, I chose to buy a place in Valle Real, which is in Zapopan. If you decide to stay I think that eventually you will want a car. If I had one suggestion it would be to try to live above the 9th or 10th floor, not only for the incredible city views but to greatly reduce the flying insects (dengue fever area), I leave my patio sliding door partially open (for my dog) 24/7 and never ever have an issue with mosquitos. I think I heard you briefly mention pizza.....in my experience this area is not great for pizza, they just can’t make good crust. Shockingly, my favorite, and I’ve tried many is.....Little Caesar’s, I kid you not. Enjoy your time here, the weather is the best year round weather that I’ve ever known and I lived in San Diego before moving here>

    • @TheYarbros
      @TheYarbros  Před 3 lety +6

      Thanks for your comment! We actually checked out Valle Real, really love the area - we love Zapopan. Having a great view is high on our list for an apartment as well. Once we saw the topography, we were hooked! We were in Merida for a year also and understand the battle against mosquitos quite well. And the weather is definitely a big draw for us. We appreciate the cooler temps here!

    • @nazurin5982
      @nazurin5982 Před 3 lety +3

      You're absolutely right with the best pizza comment, the best truly is little caesars in here, I've heard people in the U.S. consider little caesars a not so good pizza when put against dominos or other chains? Maybe the ingredients or preparation is different here? Cause dominos and all other chains simply don't match to little caesars in flavor and taste here, they're really amazing, and cheap too!

    • @WiseOwl-1
      @WiseOwl-1 Před 3 lety +5

      @@nazurin5982 ... Jajaja, it’s crazy but true about the pizza, and I have tried many of the top rated “Mom & Pop” pizza joints here.
      The other strange thing is that if you ask locals about the best Chinese “style” food, they always mention “Qin” which is Mexico’s “Panda Express”.
      But here in GDL, they have an almost unlimited number of great Mariscos (Seafood) & Japanese restaurants.

    If you have a chance, visit Tonala, you'll see some of the most amazing crafts. Spend a few hours there, eat, walk, and enjoy. Many public buses take you there and that's usually their final destination. Tonala is a small city (or big town?) near Guadalajara. It's insane! If you go there, arrive early as it gets packed. The open market or swap meet takes place Sundays and Thursdays from about 8-5. Also, try the birria, a meat kind of soup and (hopefully) served with hand-made tortillas. Enjoy your new temporary home, and WELCOME!

      Pastor is good! Try Barbacoa and birrilla if you want to try alternative meats (mutton and goat, respectively). I’m also a big fan of lengua (tongue) and meat from la cabeza of the vaca. Costilla is rib meat. It tastes slightly stronger than your typical carne asada. And if you’re daring, keep your eyes open for tacos de sesos (sweetbreads). I bet you can find some really great mariscos in GDL, seeing that it’s closer to the ocean than where I am.
      Also, find your carnitas place. If you want whole ribs, ask for huesos enteros (and watch to make sure they don’t cut it up). Surtido is the pork mixed with fat, lomo is pure meat. Order a hueso if you want a big pig drumstick.
      I really liked the tip about watching for which taquerias and stands have crowds of clients. I learned that rule on the streets of L.A., and it’s served me pretty well in Mexico.

      I am a recent widow, my late husband Tomas died of Corona virus here in USA.
      Our four kids dont speak Spanish even though we both native speakers.
      Do you know if they have schools where they teach in English?

    •  Před 3 lety

      @@Tomas-ql9yo Hi, and sorry for you loss, Certainly there are bilingual (private) schools so children can adapt to spanish. and kids adapt fast!, however, most schools are taking classes online, as there aren't any schools open, with an uncertain future. public schools teach spanish only classes, so it has to be a private school; tuition fees, per kid, may range from 3,000 to 8,000 Pesos monthly. As for the city environment, it is a big (huge) city with it's ups and downs. But I guess it leans more to the good side.

To many of those couples end up stressed and not in a good place. Contrast that to the lifestyle y’all are doing and…..well the smiles say it all. Such a cool way to enjoy each other.
