-Has anyone ever successfully welded spring steel?
-Define "successfully"..!
They bought their weld sticks in spring, so it should be alright.
not these guys they know the difference - but they do have a plant that can rebuild them - rk

Yeah that’s not how trucks in Pennsylvania come apart 😂
Hand tools would never work in the rust belt.
To make sure everyone knows this.
These repair techniques are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. The front axle is either forged or cast, the former is almost impossible to weld properly, the latter is completely impossible. Same goes for the leaf spring, it's a special kind of steel which you can't weld. These welds won't last, the one on the axle will simply let go, and the one on the spring will break right next to the weld.
This solution is only acceptably if you are putting this axle under the truck only to get it off the road more easily to a workshop, where they replace it asap.
No wonder there are so many deaths on the roads of those countries...
It is clearly visible at several points in this video that this axle was previously repaired at the same exact place before.
@@joncassino Exactly. That's why you mustn't try to repair them.
If it's that bad then go buy 'em a new axle.
in third world country, it will be hard to buy OEM parts, and even if parts are available people probably don't have the money for them on a 30+ yrs truck. on the other hand i heard this kind of repair is like 2000 rupee (~40 USD) and if you drive carefully, this can last you 6 - 12mons which is enough.
@@jlpeng9036 Don't having the money or the parts doesn't justify killing multiple people in an accident. If they don't have the parts, then don't use the truck.
There are two types of people in the comments: those who know that welds will never be as strong as the original material and those who are impressed by this roadside repair.
You're right, but if you don't have access to a new axle or spring then what else are you gonna do to get it back on the road. These lads have no choice but to make do with what they have
At the very least, they can get the tuck home.
Depending on the type of steel and the weld process used, in some cases a good weld repair can be stronger than the original material.
There's 3 but you work with what you got that's life.
While I admire their abilities and ambition, I’m not sure that the failure wasn’t from a previous repair. Kingpins don’t bust their axle ends in the middle of the road without any accident or visible road hazard. In my 79 years, I’ve been a welder, engineer and now a truck driver ……… this repair would scare me. 😢
Professional welders from Russia, I completely agree with you
Same here... weld will not transfer weight for very long. Look for this truck to be sitting in the middle of the road in the very near future. I guess one could call this job security?!? Hopefully when it fails next, nobody gets hurt.
@@GarrenShannon If you know that they receive a salary of 5 USD per day, then of course you are right.
The driver would also know that its scary but he got no option... life is hard in Pakistan specially for a truck operator

Im digging the peak-a-boo welding shield
That guy needs a modern solar-powered welding helmet.
WOWW!! REWELDING those broken main springs after they have already been weld repaired once which more than likely caused their failures again at the 1st welds is insanity as one never ever welds leaf springs... Ever... Notice the previous weld repairs to the top main springs just beyond the double wraps.. And the failures along the weld repairs ... No bueno,no good,no...And then towards the end it shows 2 new main double wrapped leaf springs being installed at the top of the spring pack ?!?!?!.. Much better than welded, non quenched, repaired springs... 👌
You do what ya gotta do!
Maybe, and it may sound facetious (is that the right word?), maybe, perhaps, this was all done in aid of getting the truck going on its way, off the road, delivering the goods, and then reassessing the costs of doing a proper refit? But probably, and this is assuming of me, the owners will soon or later figure that it isn't worth getting it fixed properly, and they'll keep running with it until it pops again? (or worse, sell it on)?
That Truck is more than 60 years old. Where you gonna find a replacement part of such an old vehilcle? And moreover, say somehow part becomes available, then how a person driving such an old vehicle for livelihood can afford it? Its Pakistan bro, a very poor and third world country. They even re-furbish worn and torn tyres but don't purchase the new one. Then in this situation, this is a steel spring. They will reweld it thousand times, who cares of road safety and human lives?
When you are stuck in the middle of the road with little time, or money, to buy a brand new spring from far-far away a weld will have to do.
I'm not sure they are new leaf springs. I saw the part numbers on them and thought the same. Then I looked back at the disassembly and, low and behold, the part numbers are just barely visible under the dirt. After repair the dirt is gone.
These man are great at problem solving.. full credit to their workmanship using limited resources….
THESE MEN ARE SUPER HUMANS~!!! I'm a weekend Mechanic and I am totally blown away by the near impossible repair on a huge truck in the middle of the street with the simplest of hand wrenches and wooden blocks and absolutely no consideration for safety for themselves. I can't admire them enough for what they do and I only hope they all live through these incredible repair jobs they do. They deserve so much more~!! Bless Them~!! 🙏🙏
This is not a repair, it is an insult to the mechanics' guild and truck manufacturers, those repairs will last until the first serious load, then it will collapse again
Give credit where credit is due. These guys did a fantastic job given the tools they have. Money is hard to come by perhaps and certainly no new truck parts are just sitting around. These folks don't waste anything and do whatever they can to salvage whenever possible. Say what you will about their work but in the end they fixed and accomplished what they set out to do. Yes, the safety is and was compromised during the entire job, but they have been working this way and in these conditions for many years. IMHHO, great job all around. My biggest concern was with all those heavy traffic zipping by all around them hoping no other vehicles accidentally hit this truck with people still under it working without any concerns.
I did give credit to them, i'm just saying get up to speed to improve, I not buying this poor country bull shit, not enough money, they are grown men and can do what ever they set their mind to, they just have to set their mind to it, like anyone else, you cannot get anywhere if you do not set out to get there, simple logic, to hell with all the excuses, done and done
I agree, absolutely first class under those conditions😁💪👍👍
dont make money your god you will perish than, repent and get right with jesus and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins and receive the holy spirit....
I wondered what they were doing when they cut the wrist off the axel end. Then when they used the thermal lance rods to gouge to the centre line to allow a successive build up of welds then I could see where they were heading. Everything is a bit medieval but they have no choice.
I agree about the "circumstances" .... but ,- that's why there are countrys who
build such trucks .........and there are countrys who try to repair such trucks ....
There are roles to made them ,- and there are repair roles
It will appeare in the ability of functionality and resistance of stress and burden
A welded axle like this has 20% of the strength of the original one.
plus welded leaf spring
I think 20% is too much. Below 10% can be a suitable guess
did you pull that number out of your butt that your boyfriend put in there?
They know that. Unfortunately thats all they got.
@@lloydchristmas1086you say that, but there's got to be plenty of junk trucks and wrecks that they could have gotten a axle and leaves from...

Not the first of last time it's been welded?
They should spend more money on new parts and less on decorating the truck, those paint jobs will not take the load far !
Orayı yeniden kaynatmak çok tehlikeli olur.

Decorating seems to be way cheaper over there than newer parts, just a marketing strategy to sell their hand build truck with basic materials
Truck art is a cultural thing, nothing to do with safety.

Romans 10:9
just weld it again, no one cares about safety and loss of life apparently in this area of the world
IT'S A HELL OF A JOB, however It will not last. the welding should have been done from the center of the fracture and build to the outside with with the proper grinding every cm or so.
That's exactly what I thought, too, when watching
Not a root weld. Doomed to failure hate to say
Thats exactly what they did..except the grinding part but who knows maybe that was done off camera
The Repairs so good as there Hand Made Oil Filters !!
From an engineer who grew up in a welding shop my thoughts would be that the best thing they could've done to that axle after all of that arc gouging, and heavy welding would've been to bury that axle in deep compacted sand for 24 hours or more to allow the metal and welds to cool down slowly, and then waited until it was cool to the touch before dabbing paint on the welded areas...
they have their own standards 😂😂😂
@@rohmadhendri8722is that what that was 🤣😳🤣🫣🤔
There's a truck sitting in the middle of a busy road...
As an engineer you should know those parts are NOT to be welded under any circumstance because of the dangers it presents.
The truck must be placed back into service ASAP!

welding spring blades can't last long. It's not the same steel, and it anneals the blade.
Absolutely. There are times when parts need to be replaced and not repaired or welded. I guess these rigs are so old they are not able to find parts, or they don't have the money to pay for them. It reminds me of the US in the early 50s.
Well........yeah.

How do you know? Are you psychic?!😂
These parts in the truck are forbidden to be repaired by welding. Complete spare parts must be used, either used or new. It is forbidden to use welding for these parts. It is very dangerous, and also the process of measuring and placing the part in its correct place. Everything they did was wrong.

I would think the only way to get good penetration is to have it connect only in the middle and build up the weld from the inside and PREHEAT was never done. but time will tell and welding leaf springs is a really temporary fix. Hard working guys and my hats off to them for what they can with the equipment they have.
Welds are normally done with both connections at a 45 degree angle so the weld has no voids. These welds will fail somewhere down the road. The least they could have done was wire brush the thing.
Your not taking into consideration that the combination of dirt, grease, rust, and paint, combine with the molten spring steel to make a ultra strong super metal that will last for weeks.
Welds must just last long enough to get the truck out of the traffic and into the next village. Then there's another team of mechanics and videographers to film part 2.
