    Killer Queen was written by Freddie, it is actually a very complex song from a composition point of view. Killer Queen is used as part of musical studies at University in Britain. The song has different time signatures, a few key modulations, Killer Queen has 29 cords. This is a very complex song for popular music. This song is studied alongside Mozart. This is a template you will often see in Freddie's songwriting, he wrote very complex songs in catchy memorable ways, so that they could still be hits. Killer Queen was Queen's first international hit song.

    I remember back then, many bands were not happy to having to lip sinc on TOTP, but we as an audience did not care, it was just great to see these bands live on our screens, whether they lipped sinced or refused to appear ( yea pressure to allow free vocal) or deliberately messed up the sinc, (these were the best), they were all great, love Queen anywhere anytime.

  • @lillylee7658
    @lillylee7658 Před 3 lety +5

    The BBC made them lip sync to the song. They didn’t want to, but had no choice in the matter. That’s the way they did Top of the Pops. That would be the reason that Freddie held back as you say. Their live performances were always so energetic. Glad you’re back to Queen. Please react to White Queen live at the Odeon Hammersmith 1975. It is breathtaking

    There is in fact a Queen jukebox musical (We Will Rock You). I haven't seen it, but I have read a plot synopsis - it's a 'paste a plot onto these songs' jukebox musical rather than 'we just want to sing a bunch of X artist's songs.' From what I remember it's... pretty convoluted, but it sounded like everyone involved had fun cooking it up.

    It’s also amazing that each one of them wrote some of their hit songs.
    You also mentioned it would be terrible to bring out an album right after Queen. Supposedly when they came off the stage at Live Aid, David Bowie was next & he took Freddie by the shoulders & said ‘How the hell do I follow that’. Bowie & Freddie were friends. They did Under Pressure together. If you haven’t reacted to that you should.

    Killer song...love it and always have. This may have been the first song by Queen I ever really listened to...waaaaaay back when it came out. I had heard Queen on the radio in my car or when I was doing things in my house, but this was the first album from Queen I ever listened to with headphones and I was captivated. The first thing I said was , "That is the best voice in rock n roll." Then Brian kicked in and the next thing I said was "Holy $***, that is the best guitar in rock n roll, too." That was when I became a bonifide Queen fan and have been ever since. You must react to White Queen Live at Odeon, Hammersmith, PLEASE!

    They weren't No.1 as much as they would have been but for being so fabulous. The competition appealed to those who didn't give the genius of Queen a chance. Still they made it thru to be legendary for the quality of their work.

    When you talk about how other bands reacted if a Queen album came out before theirs it reminded me of Live Aid. Queen absolutely stole the show & as they were coming off David Bowie was getting ready to go on & as they passed he said "You bastards. How the F*ck am I supposed to follow that?" 😋 That was pretty much everybody's reaction that had to go on after them.

    What tends to get lost amidst the due veneration of this band is the fact, as noted in multiple documentaries about them, that they were *reviled* by rock music critics from their earliest days. Which is not at all to suggest that the tastes and opinions of such individuals matter.

    Well.....the greatest bands of that time were all so different that they didn’t really impinge on each other I would say. I mean, if you’re talking the best of the best. I mean....Queen, Zeppelin, Floyd were all so different. But, I hear you....if you were a band or artist what was more radio friendly, perhaps Elton John would be a good comparison.....then might have been more direct competition. Just musings......

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic Před 3 lety +3

      I don't think that is quite true for Queen, but I can easily understand how you might have come to believe that. Take Killer Queen as an example, it is actually studied in University in Britain as part of a musical degree, alongside Beethoven's Pathétique.
      Killer Queen has time signature changes, there are quite a few key modulations through the song. The song is in a unusual key for a popular song. Killer Queen has 29 different cord, it is an incredibly complex song for being a popular hit.
      Here is part of an analysis that is done in 6 parts.
      czcams.com/video/xK9oDFYt76g/video.html
      Queen was not just seeking commercial success or doing radio friendly songs. They genuinely wrote music that they wanted to make. Killer Queen has a very Vaudeville type of feeling, Freddie was experimenting with that Vaudeville sound during this time. Vaudeville was a popular style of music from around 1890 - 1940. It certainly was not a commercial type of sound. People think of it as a commercial sound because the song became popular. I would not be surprised if people will still be studying Freddie Mercury's compositions in 50 year's time, people are starting to analyze them more these days. He actually wrote very complex compositions, but he also had the ability to write in such way where a casual listener will still enjoy the music.
      Killer Queen came from the album Sheer Heart Attack, which features Stone Cold Crazy, the song that has genuinely been credited as the first thrash metal song. At the same time, you can find a Ragtime song, this was a popular genre before Jazz became popular in the 40's.
      Check out the Ragtime number Bring Back That Leroy Brown:
      czcams.com/video/NRh-mn3Dnt8/video.html
      Of course they also added some great rock songs to the album, check out this seamless edit of three songs, from this album:
      Tenement Funster/ Flick Of The Wrist / Lily Of The Valley:
      czcams.com/video/GWTwmeaw6CU/video.html
      (Dream Theater did a nice cover of this as well)
      There are songs such as Now I am here, which was more of a straight forward rock song, which they always performed live.
      Queen produced their first anthemic type of song on this album, which no one else was doing at the time, In The Lap Of The Gods Revisited:
      czcams.com/video/Y_8kk3_-_ck/video.html
      Queen often did rock far harder then Pink Floyd, so I don't think you can count this as in a similar vein to Elton John, but they could also sometimes share some similarities. They experimented with very obscure genres, and invented thrash metal on the same album as Killer Queen. Killer Queen in reality has a lot of Vaudeville influences, which was not a popular genre of music. They were not just trying to create commercial sounding music, it is actually a very eclectic mix of different music and musical influences. You can find that on any Queen album. They had an eclectic way of experimenting with different sounds. I can understand how that might not appeal to someone if they only listed to one genre of music. If you are only into rock music, then you might not like every song. Queen were often criticized for this. A rock fan would properly llike a song such as Now I Am Here far more then Killer Queen, but in this case the rock song would actually be the more commercial sounding song.
      It might not be in everyone's taste which is understandable, but it is actually very progressive.
