VIEW STEVE'S GUITAR COURSES HERE → guitarzoom.com In this guitar lesson, Steve Stine shows you how to explore the sounds of various scales you might be working on by exploring the fretboard, using the 6th string as your root note. Often, when we are learning scales and positions on the guitar, we forget to spend time actually "listening" to the sounds of the scale against the root note and find what our ear likes best.
Steve- Absolutely love your lessons!!!! Could you do a series on 80s Hair Metal? All the common techniques, scales, chords and riffs that they used back then. Want to get a 80s rock sound. Keep rocking!!!!

That was awesome. I usually practice scales while chord chasing and miss the sounds. Then I get lost not knowing where to go next. Now I will be doing this exercise more often. Thanks for the quick lesson and keep them coming. I enjoy these quick tips.

Hey Steve, I enjoyed meeting last month in fargo! My lil bro billy introduced us on a Saturday morning. Very interesting video. Ty. Happy Easter. Peace john
Yesterday I bought Music Theory Made Easy lesson from Steve's website. To be frank, I bought it as a means of expressing my gratitude, I was thinking "The gentleman puts all his lessons for free, at least let me help him by purchasing something". Boy I was positively surprised on how deep the lessons are, much more than you put out on youtube. Although I am grateful for the free stuff as well, thanks to you I cracked music theory at last :) Thanks again Steve, you are born a teacher!
I found this way to practice in the very last bonus video of your Modes Masterclass. Really neat when you want to hear the sound of a scale in relation to a given note or chord. Thanks !
Thanks for the kind words, Doug! And thanks for watching! :-) Just a heads-up, you can still get Steve’s Greatest Licks Bundle here → guitarzoom.com/greatestlicksbundle/promo-new/ It’s 10 of Steve’s best licks courses in one bundle. And the bundle price is less than what some of the individual courses normally cost. So if you want to spice up your leads and create killer guitar solos from scratch, make sure you check it out, because it ends soon. And no matter what, keep playing! :-) - Mike from GuitarZoom P.S. Every day I pick a note and go through its locations on my fret board and play a major and minor scale off that note vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. Doing this daily you end up hearing every single time you mess up in your scales because your ear ends up just learning the steps used in the scale. Slowly over time you will mess up less and you will not even be thinking about playing your scales off of the root notes you will just be playing emphasizing certain notes. This also naturally breaks you away from being locked into vertical scale shapes which seem to be the bane of guitar players, it shows you exactly how that vertical shape is the same as the horizontal and diagonal shapes same notes.. literally the same notes just played using different strings.

Great video as usual Steve. What are your thoughts on learning how key centers work for scales and chords? My teacher showed me this recently and it really opened up my mastery of the fretboard to play any scales/chords across the entire neck. It would be awesome if you did a lesson on this topic to show us how patterns and key centers work.
I wish Steve would go back to using this Hughes & Kettner amp. It sounds much better in the recordings than the Synergy (or whatever it's called). This amp sounds good regardless of the guitar he uses.
Steve, you turned me from head banger to a axe wielder. Aye my skill is young, weak, but promising. Now my guitar is a hat and coat hanger no more! Now instead of wasting away at the park with a little Jim Beam Im passing my time obsessing over the scales. Thanks for helping me get out of the bottld. Probably werent expecting such a change thru the teaching of an instrument huh? I know i wasn't.
Hey Steve how are you ? Great vid as always ,the camara has a great picture btw. Anyway I was wondering if you would do something on recording and copywriting songs , my question is does everyone on utube or wherever get their music copyrighted before putting it out there. I have songs but not really a clue how to record so my music just sits and it's really frustrating . I know you don't usually do that kind of stuff but any thoughts?

I am finding one of the best things to help me with that lately is to NOT look at the fretboard. That way you are forced to hear what is happening instead of visually depending on where to go.

Nice! I love using "ghost notes" to explore complementary notes and make my sound bigger.
