Steve, I really appreciate your teaching style, and all your hard work. My question is, do have a video that you teach on "How Notes Make Chords" or how a chord is made??? I'm having a hard time wrapping my warped mind around the note/chord/key/tone thing and difference.
Thank you for a ton of helpful information. I am a 42 year old engineer that has never played any instrument. The theory is far more important for me because I don’t memorize, I understand and apply things. I just bought my first guitar and am learning with my daughter who wants to play.
I think there's some programs like Playground Sessions for guitar, but DO NOT rely on graphics that are like Rock Band to read music. Just learn to read music. TAB can't hurt, but you'll have to read notes at some point. So just START there. If you major in music, city colleges are incredibly cheap to free, and you get guys that DID go to the expensive music schools. And you'll be right back to piano for theory. Lol. Even for drums. They make you do marimba at some point. Which is essentially a xylophone, set up like a piano.
When you are able to go from no musical theory understanding to making your own songs. Ty Steve :D This is one of the first videos I will show someone when they are starting to learn scales.

Steve i would like to say a massive that you for all the content you have put out, I have played guitar since i was 13 (now 35) on and off, mainly off for the last 13 years but thanks to your content i feel i am only now beginning to start to learn to play properly, I was self taught and got to a what i now see as a basic level, yes i played in a band and enjoyed it but that was mainly bashing power chords etc, I always knew the pentatonic scale but had no idea how to use it, Now i making serious efforts to learn basic music theory on how keys/chords are constructed/the caged theory using the Major pentatonic sclae as a sort of webbing, Just throwing in some chord notes in the right places and the difference in how i can solo is unbelievable, Speed and technique is not where it could be but i can play some nice slow solos over backing tracks and have a idea on how im going to create it thanks to you, Once again Thanks

I’m wondering if you have a trick or even a video on one major exercise I was taught when learning classical guitar…my teacher would have us play all the locations of a single note everywhere on the fretboard below the 11th fret and then 12-22. We did a new one everyday and spent like 3-5 minutes doing that. It seems so basic and common sense that I’m sure you’ve heard or done something similar, for whatever reason it’s not really clicking for my daughter like it was for me. Thanks for all your help man!

Great explanation, thanks a lot. If I may make a suggestion, a quick reference about correspondence from ABCDEFG to La, Si, Do, Ré, Mi, Fa, Sol would have helped.
They don't make you do solfege until dedicated music theory...and in the States, we call Si, Ti. Tho you're right that if you wanted to major in music, go find Julie Andrews from Sound of Music, lol. "Do, a Deer." But one could go insane fast. I mean, I think you CAN have an E#, it's enharmonic (same note, different names) to F. Or Gbb. See? Turns messy damn fast. Lol Good to know, but it can turn into never-ending fractal-like knowledge.
But real world college major stuff, music theory starts with the assumption that you know nothing about it. They always use piano, of course. Because you can easily SEE how it works. But I was surprised to find that if you've had lessons in several instruments, theory is incredibly easy. Also an easy major. You just learn as it's pertinent if you learned through private lessons. I learned about root/open chords and 2nd inversions from Jon Cain's piano based songwriting. He's huge on them both.
So I need to pull the "LETTERS"out before I can pull "words out", in order to create "sentences" Steve,,,, please help obie won kanobi,,,you're my only hope,,, seriously, I need to comprehend notes used to make chords,,,,
