    I'm 52 years old, a university graduate, and as a consequence I've had more than my fair share of teachers, at primary, secondary and tertiary level, and you are absolutely at the very top in terms of teaching skills. You are really a great educator. If there was any justice in this world, you'd be a very rich man - I hope you are. Great work matey. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

    Ok Steve, I realize that I have been coming at you with a lot of comments but, for me, this was the kicker! This video really helped me to no end. I really appreciate your time and effort. I'm a 69 year old guy that has been playing guitar for a very long time. My main guitar is an acoustic Takamine that I have had with me since 1975! I've been trying to take my playing abilities to the next level for quite a long time. You, my young friend, have made that possible. This was the first time that I actually had my guitar in my lap while watching and listening. It made all the difference in the world!!!

    steve, i really enjoy your lessons ... i'm finally starting to understand more theory than i ever thought i could

  • @MrJacobThrall
    @MrJacobThrall Před 3 lety

    I've known numerous elements of theory for a long time, but not really KNOWN them, if you see what I mean. I know that any major scale is "tone-tone-semitone-tone-tone-tone-semitone", and have done since my teens. And I know that means that different scales therefore need different amounts of sharps and flats to accommodate that pattern. But just saying "between third and fourth" and "between seventh and eighth" makes it feel so much easier. That's the beauty of your videos for me: I know lots of snippets of music theory - some of which more advanced than I know what to do with - but you're linking them all up for me.

    Steve! You nailed it home for me. I'm just starting out on guitar and have been trying to learn theory (online) and copying youtube vids at the same time. I really couldn't get how it was magically decided by some music god which notes make up a particular chord. After watching this vid, I now understand HOW to find which notes are in a major diatonic scale and then figure out WHICH of those notes make up the major chord. I also now see there is a relationship with diatonic and do-ra-me... What I don't know, yet, is WHY there are 12 pitches in an octave and WHY it was decided that we should pick out 7 of them? I'll bet I can find that out by checking out more of you vids. Rock on man! Thanks

    Always learned songs by ear and wondered what the heck I was playing and why. I took my first "real" guitar lesson today and was seeing the same things you are talking about here. Must be a good place to start. Thanks.

    Steve man, I learned theory (Master Theory series book 1-6) in prison and not getting a whole lot of play time limited my ability to put this stuff together. I now understand how a major scale works and how the circle of fifths are relative to the do ra mi scale! Awesome! I'm glad you do this and I am happy I discovered your tutoring!
    Thank you!

    Dude this is amazing! I've been scared of theory since I started guitar 16 years ago. I had seen an awesome video from you before and while browsing through lessons I seen you and clicked and BAM! Another awesome lesson. You break it down to where even I can understand whats going on. This is just the kind of lessons I've been needing. Awesome job man!

    I've been playing for years, but I never worried about the tech ( theory ). Now I have decided to learn it, Steve is becoming my favorite educator. I had a book "the heavy guitar Bible" that had all this stuff in it,but I was more worried about learning Metallica than come up with my own stuff. Thanks Steve for taking the time to teach.

    Finally decided to learn the theory behind everything I've been playing for a couple of decades, and damn if you didn't just make the major scale something I can easily remember beyond what my fingers already knew. Many, many thanks.

      I can't tell you how thankful I am that you put it this clearly. I've been running exercises on building chords, major, minor, 7ths, dim and aug, and I get it all now...incredible. Shifting theory into fluid improvisation will take time, but man, it feels so good to finally understand the basic building blocks. Better late than never.

    Thank you so much for making it comprehensible!! Finally!! (One minor, hair-splitting remark though... "diatonic" means "through the tone", "tone" meaning that through which something is pulled, like a string. Seven-tone is "heptatonic"). Thanks again!!
