Start Locations: I have had many comments indicating these do not work, but I have managed to get them to work. Create your map as normal, making sure any mods and DLC's you want enabled are enabled, and everything is set to standard (spawn locations, resources, etc). Once almost done with your map, turn on the Advanced Mode. Go to the Player Editor, delete everyone. Add in a Player (you, and slots for real players if you need). Set these to Any (it may force it to be Random, and not let you select Any, this should be fine). Spawn in AI players, one for each AI player you want. Then, spawn in an AI player for each City State you want (yes, every single city state). Set all of these, as before, to Any (or forced Random). Make sure the city states are set to be City States, not Civilizations. Start Locations can be placed like they are a feature/terrain. The menu on the left shows which player's start location you are placing. Place every single one, including the city states.
Save your map as usual (follow the above video, etc). Go create a new match, and make sure City States are set to the amount you created (this can mess things up if not set correctly). You can leave other Civs at random, or you can specify who you want them to be. Keep in mind, the player order will correspond to the order you put them in the Player Editor, and therefor where you put their spawn locations. Then you should be good to go! If there is a need, let me know, I might make a separate video just on this topic since it seems to be a bigger hurdle.
I would very much like to see a video on this one; I'm kinda tired of always recreating matches with my friends, when we spawn on tundra, or on other civs necks.
A 'restart match with new seed' button would be nice also - you hear me firaxis?!
@@ZeDlinG67 that would be pretty nice, to be able to quickly generate a new random map
First thank you so much for the video and also this follow up comment. I was getting errors when loading my maps and you helped me figure out that when creating the game I need to match the number of city-states in the advanced setup to the number of city-state start locations I placed on my map
Hey I'm glad you liked it. Sounds similar to some of the hassles ive had before
Is there a way to have a start location for just one player? Like if I wanted to make a map where I have a 'castle' I wanted to spawn in, and wanted the AI to be randomly placed?
Im having some trouble when I try to save it simply doesn't show up. anybody having trouble with this. Everything looks ok but when I save map it just doesn't show up in save map or load map or map selection or anything
Try exiting out and back in if the game
Thank you so much man from Russia (St. Petersburg) - YOU are the only one who could explain everything and everything worked out, before that I reviewed about 20 bloggers and re-read a bunch of information on the network. - YOU'RE THE BEST THANKS
Well hello from the US! Glad I could help you out :)
Here is my list of tips:
>>Before you start a new map, disable all but the official mods (expansions pretty much)
>>Change the Ruleset to the highest expansion you have, if you dont you wont be able to use these things in the Editor (example: with standart rules you wont be able to place vulcanos)
>>If you want to set the starting positions for atleast one player, I would place them for all the other ones, too. I have noticed that the game stops loading the map if you dont, prob because the random generation finds an error.
Sadly, so far I have not found out how to be able to choose "Any" leader instead of "Random". Ill update this post here if I think of more helpful things!
Thanks so much! I was doing something wrong when I tried to create maps and couldn't start new games with them. I don't know how, but following your guide I could finally create a game!
Glad you got it to work!
It’s been a while! Glad to see you back :)
Bob! I was watching some of your videos recently. Good to see you're still keeping it going. :)
Precision:
if you have 2 edited maps (or more) and one doesn't appear in the map selection, make sure that it has a different mod name, because two mods with the same name can't be both activated (go on the feather on the top left in world builder to change the name of the mod)
I had that problem and didn't know what was happening for a few hours
Also, thanks for the start locations tutorial, I don't think others tutorials as complete as this one are available on CZcams
It was very useful. Thank u from Siberia with love )
Wow Drawing & Dragons welcome back
Lol thanks Josh
This is driving me nuts. Got my maps to work on the weekend. Went back in and changed some stuff, and they no longer appear when I try to start a new game. What I would give for someone to review this map for me and tell me what I am doing wrong!
I worked it out!! I had used an old map and while I updated the Mod Name etc in the feather menu, it had the same ID number in the General section. Once i hit Generate a New ID and saved it again. it worked!
@@simonbedard7258 Thank god for this comment, you deserve a reward!
anyone having issues with the map crashing, start locations do work, took awhile to figure out but when the basic option is on, all spawn locations are random. In advance mode you need to select the spawn locations manually for everything, it requires you to place all the civs and make a AI - free city slot with every city state. when creating a game with civ ai's and players, set the city states to 0 and it will load. it crashes because its trying to load the city states and it cant because there are no spawn locations assigned or you have spawned to many for the map to handle, this might also apply to civs that don't have a selected spawn point, haven't tested that yet
Very helpful to read, glad someone did some experimenting.
@@alec2themax :)
@@alec2themax more then welcome to pin the comment for anyone that has those issues, also civs that don't have a start location spawn randomly in the map and may spawn on top of each other
I knew there was something I forgot to do, thanks for reminding me
Thank You! This helped so much
Glad it helped you out!
This guy deserves more subs
Thanks! I am not sure if I do, been a while since ive made a video but maybe ill make more
strange, i did everything the same but my map doesn't show up when i crreate a game and want to select a map. It is activated in additional content as a mod and all but it just doesn't work...
This Guy deserve more subscribers
Thanks :) I hope to try to make some more videos soon. Got one or two coming up
Just me? But can't select "any" for the civ when choosing start positions. Is always on random :/
Yeah SAME! We could need some help, both.
I had the same issue, but it seemed to treat it like Any. I was able to be a random civ or choose a specific civ just fine
If I place those start positions and start to play, I just spawn random
@@luxofortis3713 me too
Same here...can't choose "any", it just put "random" instead. On my test map, all other civs were "random" and we I set up a test run, I choose "no duplicate leader" and they were duplicates leaders. Weird.
Your a life saver subbed
You’re welcome
Thanks, man!
It seems that my issue were different names of the mod and the map.
Drawings and Dragons 3:44 "The Earth is flat." J/K.
I usually don't draw a map from scratch and instead modify one of the templates. As such, I noticed that doing so breaks the Terra map ruleset; on terra maps, all civs (and some city-states) start on the bigger landmass and the other landmass is empty (except for the remaining city-states.) This is supposed to create the "New World" opportunity where the first civ to discover oceanic travel, and invests in the units to do so, get dibs on the sweetest city sites on the other landmass. By tinkering with a Terra map on Worldbuilder, it undoes this parameter and places civ starting locations on both landmasses.
Speaking of selecting civs and their starting locations, my findings are that they ALMOST work as they should. It seems the key is that it is all-or-nothing. If you want to play as a certain civ or have specific other civs in the game, you can choose them from advanced settings in the normal game mode (without worldbuilder.) But you can't pick which city-states are in the game (which is really, really annoying. There's one particular city-state, Auckland, that enables a certain strategy that is very potent, particularly when playing as Gitarja, that is much less effective without that city-state in the game or if it's far away because you won't find it until later and/or it will get killed.) So I find that if I want Auckland in the game, I have to choose every civ and every city-state. And for starting locations, again it's all or nothing. If I want to start in a particular location (and/or ensure that a certain civ or city-state is in a particular location) I have to set the starting locations for ALL civs and city-states. This works in the matter of having all your selected starting locations be where civs start, but it doesn't work in that it still seems to randomize which civ or city-state starts there. After restarting several times, you can eventually get the desired results.
great tutorial! I made some changes to the resource count....they don't stick when I play the game.....any idea how to fix that?
I think you need to have resources set to a specific setting when creating the map, and then when actually trying to play the map. You may need to experiment a bit
resources are not showing up when i load up my finished map to play it, is there a way to fix that ??
I made a map and played it and liked it placed resources and various things and then went back map then disappeared from my mods and no matter what I do I can't get it back is there any obvious problem that would cause this?
When i set a Civ to be ANY, it sets itself to random no matter what, and from other comments, they say it works like normal, but whenever I try to play the map, i am forced to play a random civ, it wont let me choose.
same
Great video, thanks a lot. :-)
I'm still looking for a information how to make maps WITH mods in world builder and to play it later. In Singleplayer. :-( It is really hard to get information about this witch are up to date.
can't seem to find any information on navigating advanced builder mode, any advice?
Describe a bit more what you mean by "navigating". In the video I show how to turn on advanced mode, and how to access the Player Editor and use that to set start locations. But aside from that I don't have any further experience in like setting cities, techs, etc, since that stuff is more used for making Scenarios, not necessarily Maps.
Hot damn sounds just like a choir
Lol stop
it always crashes the game when i try to start the game after i made my map :/ something lua.log :/
My game doesn’t have world builder. Is there a way to enable it?
how can I disable mods after building a map? or would I have to make a completely new map?
You have to use a database editor, then open the folder labeled something like "mods." once you have it open, delete the mods you want to remove and save. Then open it in game and save.
I can't get my saved map to show up when I go to create game, someone help please.
17:56
this part i always made the mistake of naming the map, but only naming the mod.
causing confusion everytime i had to look for the map
mom laughed. hehe. thanks for the help mate!
How do we have true start locations for countries like if I create an Earth map, and want Canada at the right location US and so on
True start locations meaning like real life locations? I am not too sure how to do that, sorry. I usually make custom maps so I don't really deal with that
@@alec2themax k thanks, I am designing a real earth map like the "Yet not another earth map" mod, however, North and South America is in the proper spot, on the west side of the map lol
I've followed these instructions exactly and the map doesn't show in the map section, only the mod section, where it won't let me activate it. And suggestions on what's wrong? Four civilizations, four City-States, a starting location for all eight. Randomly put in resources which are removed when I reopen the map. The LUA file shows this error: Runtime Error: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization VI\Base\Assets\UI\WorldBuilderMapEditor.lua:100: operator .. is not supported for string .. nil
The random resources I think is if you have random resources on when you start a game. As for the error code, not sure at all sorry.
If its not showing in Maps but is showing in Mods... Hmmm. There can be a few things causing that. Your settings when you are trying to start a game (which ruleset/expansion, which mods are on or off, etc) need to be identical to what they were when you made the map. If that doesn't help, maybe try checking the folder where maps are saved. If its not in there, it might have saved to the wrong place somehow. Sorry I am not much more help
@@alec2themax Thanks. I've read everything I can find on the internet and it appears that opening up the advanced map options can cause the map to fail. Lots of complaints about how picky it is. Very grateful for your tutorial. Will try again.
Yeah its a bit finnicky. I have found it can just come down to luck
Hey man, i have a problem with resources. I want to place certain resources just like you did and create a sort of exclusivity, but when I play the map after uploading it to the workshop, it generates resources on its own on top of the ones I placed. What could be causing this? How can I fix it?
When you are creating the “game” in the main menus check if you have random resources turned on. It’s going to follow whatever setting you had on when you first made the map
@@alec2themax Yes that makes sense. But I guess there's no way to remove randomly generated resources at all, only reduce them. It's pretty annoying having Rice spawning in the Europe-like continent and Maize in the Far East-like one.
But Gedemon was able to do this in his Earth maps, right?
Same problem, can't select any civ, but i tried with random and it worked, just select the exact same civs when you create a new game, and it works
Nice good to hear that it works for others
It did work, thank you so much, please keep uploading videos. Saludos desde México!!
It doesn’t show up in the select map it says untitled map even tho I’ve named it
Same, I got my game for free on Epic so I don't know if that's causing a problem.
Tried to do this. My map does not show up under the create game area. Have all the rulesets and mods I use active (only a handful of mods) because this is a map I am making just for myself. help
*EDIT* completing quitting out of the game and coming back in fixed it. wtf. don't care, getting that luftballoons haha.
Hey, do you have to activate the "Any" option in the AppOptions file? I play Civilization VI over Epic Games, shouldn't make any problems, still can't use "Any". It automatically sets it then to "Random", I tried multiple maps, still did not work.
That's odd that it won't let you change it to Any. You should not need to activate anything
Hey so I checked this out just a bit ago, I am actually getting the same issue! Very odd. I was still able to set spawn start locations and set leaders just fine, so you will hopefully be okay. Still seems like a buggy issue they are working on
Yeah, I also can set spawn locations and that, but when you open a game you have to do some more things than with the "Any" functions.
Will you think about making a guide on how to upload/download mods properly like maps, scenarios, and all that kind of stuff. I think that would b helpful for many people.
Like upload them to the Steam Workshop? I have never done it before myself but I can certainly try
No matter what I do the start locations for my map do not work and I can't find any information about it online. I noticed the start locations didn't work right in this video either. Please help
As you can tell by the video, I'm not super knowledgeable on them myself. The advanced settings are still a work-in-progress so there are bound to be issues. Did you make sure to create the teams first in the Player Editor? That is what the start locations use.
Make sure that you saved the map while advanced mode is turned on otherwise it won't save them. Instead of using the player tool you can just use the field tool right netxt to placement. This allows you to alter the properties of the selected tile as well as selecting who should start there.
same for me its not working either ive try everything
start locations do work, took awhile to figure out but when the basic option is on, all spawn locations are random. In advance mode you need to select the spawn locations, it requires you to place all the civs and make AI - free cities and every city state manually. if you only add AI - free cities with civ ai's and players with 0 spawned city states it will load. it crashes because its trying to load the city states and it cant because there are no spawn locations assigned, this might also apply to civs that don't have a selected spawn point, haven't tested that yet
I am having trouble playing the map that I made. The message I keep getting is. "Error Starting Game. We recommend the you disabling any mods and try again. Error one or more startup scripts has an error. See lua.log." Note: the first time I played worldbuilder. I was able to build and play the game with no issue, but now I can't. Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry for the late reply. It's most likely based on whether you had mods on at the time of making that specific map. At least that is what I have found usually causes the problem.
ive set my players to any, yet it still forces them to be random, does anyone know how to fix this?
to clarify, the spawn locations do infact work absolutely as intended, its just that i cant chose who any of the players are
EDIT 2: IVE FOUND A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM, just set them to any empire in the game and then it lets you choose, i learnt this after giving up and setting my players manually in the player editor, DO NOT SET THEM TO ANY, set them to different empires and for some reason it lets you chose
Can I just put the start location of the player? Instead of putting all of the start locations, including AI...
I believe you need to place all of them for it to work
i cant plase dlc civs spawn points. do i neew to place the city-stats. so if i whant to play canada i place toronto?
Nope its not the citystates. You need to make sure that you have the DLC activated when you create the world. Then you need to go into advanced settings. From there, make sure Canada is one of the players. Then place a city for that player
@@alec2themax thanks
@@rga7099 you're welcome, hope that helps
*Tell me how to play a map with circular river without crushing*
I do not think you can. The last time I remember the developers mentioning it, they said it can't be done.
13:35 What "advance mod" means?
Sorry, I had meant to say advanced mode. It is an option you can turn on that shows more complicated controls
Why do they have to make custom starting locations so hard
Yeah it seems like a very highly requested feature for people who want to make maps, so you would imagine it would be a high priority when it comes to Worldbuilder development. I am hoping its something they are working on
"There was an error starting the game we recommend disabling any mods and start again"Every. Single. Time.I do not have any mods, except for the current map enabled. I don't now what I do wrong.
That sounds a bit odd. Did you have any enabled when you first made the map?
Sadly it doesn’t work for me and idk why
Is there a way to get world builder on Switch version?
I don't think it is on console sorry
@@alec2themax do u know if firaxis has plans for this maybe in the new frontier dlc
I don't sorry. I am sure its something they want to add in the future
How do I make ponds?
Like a lake? You use a coastal tile (or even ocean tiles if you want it to be really deep) and place them in a land area.
Is this coming to console in any form?
I don't think so sorry, at least not soon. I remember from a stream a while ago, they were working on a map browser, so maybe when that is finished
@@alec2themax thank you i was wondering. I hope they add something to console eventually.
It doesn’t show up on Nintendo switch version
Yeah its not on there sorry
How do you turn it on for swich?
The switch version doesn't have worldbuilder unfortunately
Noooooooo... thanks for the info

I dont think you can do it from the Worldbuilder, but I have never tried that. Sorry
@@alec2themax oh welp
Is the world builder on console?
I do not know for sure, but I don't think so
It really sucks that worldbuilder isn't on console. I can't get Civ 6 on my computer as it is VERY slow and old. Thanks for the video anyway :)
Yeah it is a bit unfortunate, it would be nice if at least the basic version could be on there.
@@alec2themax Yeah, maybe we will get one in Civ 7
It doesnt show up :(
Sorry you'll need to be a bit more specific, what doesn't show up?
how do i place floodplains?
They should be an option in Features. Generally they need to be next to a river, and there are ones for different terrain types I think
@@alec2themax i can add marsh but floodplains are always red next to both rivers and seas
Sorry this took a while, but I did some searching. What Ruleset did you have selected when you started making the map? The conditions for placing the floodplain are different between the different Rulesets. (Standard, Rise & Fall, Gathering Storm)
@@alec2themax i was using the standard ruleset
That would be why then. Not sure how to help then sorry
Wish you could name your own continents :(
Yeah agreed. I know there is probably ways to do it in modding, along with being able to edit the list of city/natural feature names for each civ. Ive always thought it could be cool to do a whole like D&D world with modded civs and terrain names and things
@@alec2themax yeah that's what I wanted to do for more immersive rp
Maybe in the future

Can you help me play my scenario 10 hours making a map and i cant play it without cheating heavily to get people into starting positions.. -.-
also your map on the mini map looks like mr hanky having a gang bang.

im sure this is why i went bank to civ 5 last year coming to think about it...
I actually don't really mess with starting spawn locations or other scenario-building tools. For the Avatar play through I just did random teams and random spawn locations.
I'm not sure what your problem is if you don't share more about what you've tried and haven't. But I know the starting locations aren't perfect yet, since its one of the Advanced features still a work in progress
@@alec2themax I found it bud took me a while but I did and soon as I started playing I realised id lost all interest 🤣.
All these people trying to solve issues tell me this crap isn’t worth bothering with, very poor;y designed when people have to go through all this.
I mean it’s relatively experimental, especially when this video was released. Maybe give it a try first?
@@alec2themax I’m sick of trying it. That’s how I arrive at my conclusion. When you have to start scouring websites and videos and you see how everyone is struggling, it means it’s a design failure.
