Fixing Audi's noisy SUNROOF (8V1 S3 Sunroof problem)

  • Firstly; Yes, I didn't wash the car. Secondly, at least we seem to have gotten to the bottom of the 8V S3 Sunroof problem! That thing has been driving me crazy! I hope anyone with similar issues got insight from this video as to how to find and solve a simple noise issue like this on your car! Just do some googling and see what you can find that might help.
    EDIT:
    From the comments we've deducted that this sunroof rattle problem is present in most VAG cars
    - Audi Q7
    - Audi Q5
    - Audi Q3
    - VW Golf 7
    - VW Tiguan
    - VW Touareg
    - Audi A3
    Luckily these cars share a lot of parts so if your sunroof has these two screws this rattle fix should work for you too!
    Anyway here's the original video I found and it helped me a lot:

    Q7 CREAKING: Thank you for this video as I was trying to fix my Audi Q7's creaking sunroof. This didn't show how to adjust the Q7, but the premise was the same. My creaking was caused the friction in between the front & rear panel on the panoramic sun roof. There are 8 screws, 4 on each side on the railing underneath the back panel glass (like the screws in your video you showed).
    MY FIX: I retracted the front panel w/ the button to relieve pressure between the two panels, then loosened the 8 screws using the star shaped bit, then with my hand I pushed up on the back panel (there is a 1/4" or so the panel can move up and down w/ screw adjustments), retightened the screws, and lowered the front panel back into the closed position. This fixed the annoying creaking. THANK YOU!
    CONCEPT: You are creating pressure between two points of contacts (front & rear panel of sun roof). If those contacts are loose and flex, they will rub and create noise. Tightening that contact stops the movement and any creaking.
    MY RESEARCH: I looked everywhere for a solution - lubing the rubber seal all around the glass (didn't work), installing felt tape on the plastic clasps on the sun roof railing (didn't try to do this one) & lubed the rubber foot that presses down on the wind screen at the front of the sun roof (didn't work), removing the wind screen (didn't try). This was a $525 bill at Audi, which I didn't proceed with.
    Thank you again for posting this. It was crazy to read all the unsolved issues with the sun roof and how many times I read a dealership replaced the sunroof outright.

      That's epic man! Well done on figuring it out and thanks for posting it here I hope more people with Q7s find this comment. Glad I could help you out even if it was only in concept! :P

      @hlf_coder6272 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I appreciate the description, but I'm a little confused. I have a 2023 RS3 with a creaky sunroof, but it's only one panel for the sunroof, unless I'm just misunderstanding the terminology. In other words, when you say you "pushed up on the back panel" are you referring to the rear portion of the glass sunroof after it's retracted fully open? Or does the Q7 just have a different sunroof than an RS3?
      I've already had it at the dealership, which is 250 miles from my home so it's not very simple to do appointments. All they did was lube the tracks. It improved it for 2 weeks, but now the noise is just back again and driving me crazy. They also said the next step would involve removing the headliner, which I'd really love to avoid.
      Thanks again for the writeup

    • @alex_aka_dev
      @alex_aka_dev  Před 3 měsíci

      @hlf_coder6272 you lift up the back portion of the glass to get the two screws in the center. I have an 2014 8V S3. So you just loosen the two screws slightly to be able to shift the whole panel up and down within its bracket and then tighten.
      Do you have the new facelift model because I’m not sure if those have the same sunroof mechanism. Let me know if this helps💪

    • @kevinrust
      @kevinrust Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@hlf_coder6272 I don't know anything about the design of the RS3, but I would assume based on my experience and this video, that there are adjustment screws somewhere that are now loose. The Q7 has two panels, the front that retracts over the rear panel. I pushed up the rear panel when the front panel was open to create more tension when closed. The front pane aligns & presses against the rear pane edge when closed. That eliminated any vibration & squeaks.

  • @xristo303
    @xristo303 Před 10 měsíci +1

    Glad i found this vid. For me the problem was the front two screws that needed alignment. Interestingly it appears Audi tried to fix the rear screw problem by smothering the rear screws with silicon.

      Really, maybe a dodgy mechanic did that. But wouldn’t be surprised if that mechanic was working for Audi😂glad you got it sorted, there’s no worse sound when driving. I’ve also found just opening and closing the sunroof helps for creaks if you haven’t used it in a while

  • @GF-lk8jh
    @GF-lk8jh Před rokem +1

    I also did the torx screws and reset on my SQ5. Only lasted a few months. Friction between rubber seal and glass so used the silicon grease (must be silicon) and it has been over 6 months now. I wiped and reapplied once in that time. I hear it flex on big bumps but it resets itself so do stress on rail which I feel was source of creak. If adjusting screws doesn’t last try the silicon grease (rubber grease is too viscous - silicon like jelly so slides easier)

    Hey there! I recently got an s3 and was having the same issue. I will give it a try, but also i dont know if you had this issue as well but like at over 100mph or 160 kph it sounds just like if the sunroof is open. Did you had this issue as well?

    • @alex_aka_dev
      @alex_aka_dev  Před měsícem

      Hey man no didn't have that issue. I would suggest that maybe the seal isn't in the proper position. Try adjusting the screws lower from where u find them at the moment and see if that helps the seal. If not maybe check if the rubber seal itself is in good condition and not dry-rotted.
      But I think adjusting the screws down a bit should help a bit.

  • @bmwforlife6951

    Alex, next time put a big microfibertowel to protect the roof. The interesting thing is that there are also video's where they smear the rubbers to stop the noise. That also works.

    • @alex_aka_dev
      @alex_aka_dev  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey man, yeah I checked my alignment afterwards and it seemed fine with no major gaps, i moved mine all the way down first time round and that looked funny but centering those screws was the move on the S3. Had to have my palm inside on the glass to lift it properly while tightening
