Fixing Audi's noisy SUNROOF (8V1 S3 Sunroof problem)

- Firstly; Yes, I didn't wash the car. Secondly, at least we seem to have gotten to the bottom of the 8V S3 Sunroof problem! That thing has been driving me crazy! I hope anyone with similar issues got insight from this video as to how to find and solve a simple noise issue like this on your car! Just do some googling and see what you can find that might help.
EDIT:
From the comments we've deducted that this sunroof rattle problem is present in most VAG cars
- Audi Q7
- Audi Q5
- Audi Q3
- VW Golf 7
- VW Tiguan
- VW Touareg
- Audi A3
Luckily these cars share a lot of parts so if your sunroof has these two screws this rattle fix should work for you too!
Anyway here's the original video I found and it helped me a lot:
• Fix A3 S3 RS3 Creaking...
Golf 7.5 R - 25k km, the sunroof was killing me, i even thought to sell it, until i found your video.
Totally worked, complete silence now i can enjoy my dream car.
Thanks for sharing this. 👏👏👏
Hahah sick man!!!🔥🔥it was the same in my car😂I was pulling my hair out over the noise and couldn’t believe it was just two screws
Q7 CREAKING: Thank you for this video as I was trying to fix my Audi Q7's creaking sunroof. This didn't show how to adjust the Q7, but the premise was the same. My creaking was caused the friction in between the front & rear panel on the panoramic sun roof. There are 8 screws, 4 on each side on the railing underneath the back panel glass (like the screws in your video you showed).
MY FIX: I retracted the front panel w/ the button to relieve pressure between the two panels, then loosened the 8 screws using the star shaped bit, then with my hand I pushed up on the back panel (there is a 1/4" or so the panel can move up and down w/ screw adjustments), retightened the screws, and lowered the front panel back into the closed position. This fixed the annoying creaking. THANK YOU!
CONCEPT: You are creating pressure between two points of contacts (front & rear panel of sun roof). If those contacts are loose and flex, they will rub and create noise. Tightening that contact stops the movement and any creaking.
MY RESEARCH: I looked everywhere for a solution - lubing the rubber seal all around the glass (didn't work), installing felt tape on the plastic clasps on the sun roof railing (didn't try to do this one) & lubed the rubber foot that presses down on the wind screen at the front of the sun roof (didn't work), removing the wind screen (didn't try). This was a $525 bill at Audi, which I didn't proceed with.
Thank you again for posting this. It was crazy to read all the unsolved issues with the sun roof and how many times I read a dealership replaced the sunroof outright.
That's epic man! Well done on figuring it out and thanks for posting it here I hope more people with Q7s find this comment. Glad I could help you out even if it was only in concept! :P
I appreciate the description, but I'm a little confused. I have a 2023 RS3 with a creaky sunroof, but it's only one panel for the sunroof, unless I'm just misunderstanding the terminology. In other words, when you say you "pushed up on the back panel" are you referring to the rear portion of the glass sunroof after it's retracted fully open? Or does the Q7 just have a different sunroof than an RS3?
I've already had it at the dealership, which is 250 miles from my home so it's not very simple to do appointments. All they did was lube the tracks. It improved it for 2 weeks, but now the noise is just back again and driving me crazy. They also said the next step would involve removing the headliner, which I'd really love to avoid.
Thanks again for the writeup
@hlf_coder6272 you lift up the back portion of the glass to get the two screws in the center. I have an 2014 8V S3. So you just loosen the two screws slightly to be able to shift the whole panel up and down within its bracket and then tighten.
Do you have the new facelift model because I’m not sure if those have the same sunroof mechanism. Let me know if this helps💪
@@hlf_coder6272 I don't know anything about the design of the RS3, but I would assume based on my experience and this video, that there are adjustment screws somewhere that are now loose. The Q7 has two panels, the front that retracts over the rear panel. I pushed up the rear panel when the front panel was open to create more tension when closed. The front pane aligns & presses against the rear pane edge when closed. That eliminated any vibration & squeaks.
Could you add more details where to find those 8 screws? Heve a similar problem with my 4m 2016
Glad i found this vid. For me the problem was the front two screws that needed alignment. Interestingly it appears Audi tried to fix the rear screw problem by smothering the rear screws with silicon.
Really, maybe a dodgy mechanic did that. But wouldn’t be surprised if that mechanic was working for Audi😂glad you got it sorted, there’s no worse sound when driving. I’ve also found just opening and closing the sunroof helps for creaks if you haven’t used it in a while
Now I know what I will do tomorrow. I can understand your enthusiasm when getting rid of creaks. 😂 My Škoda Superb is otherwise so quiet, only the sunroof makes noises. Hope this will fix it. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Knowing that Skoda and Seat share parts I hope it gives you as much peace as it did me😂since this video mine needs a re-tighten
Thank you sharing mate.
I had similar issue on 2015 VW polo GTI and this trick fixed the noise issue.
I might test this little bit more and will share more with you.
Thanks again!
Thanks a Ton man!💪 glad it could help! Please share more tips cause my rubber on the glass seems to be squeaking now and adjusting the screws don’t seem to do much!
@@alex_aka_dev thank you mate.
I’ve read that for the rubber parts and seals we can use some rubber products.
I am actually testing the Nextzett Rubber care stick which should treat and protect the rubber. So far it so good but I didn’t have any issues with my rubber seals to begin with.
Few weeks in and to be honest I am still having the rattle noise.
I will try to troubleshoot this with the delearship :(
@@georgiosvogiatzis1039 unlucky man let me know what they find. Mine comes back then I just readjust. My rubbers however are noisy but I just need silicon spray
I also did the torx screws and reset on my SQ5. Only lasted a few months. Friction between rubber seal and glass so used the silicon grease (must be silicon) and it has been over 6 months now. I wiped and reapplied once in that time. I hear it flex on big bumps but it resets itself so do stress on rail which I feel was source of creak. If adjusting screws doesn’t last try the silicon grease (rubber grease is too viscous - silicon like jelly so slides easier)
I’ll give it a go thanks man!
Hey there! I recently got an s3 and was having the same issue. I will give it a try, but also i dont know if you had this issue as well but like at over 100mph or 160 kph it sounds just like if the sunroof is open. Did you had this issue as well?
Hey man no didn't have that issue. I would suggest that maybe the seal isn't in the proper position. Try adjusting the screws lower from where u find them at the moment and see if that helps the seal. If not maybe check if the rubber seal itself is in good condition and not dry-rotted.
But I think adjusting the screws down a bit should help a bit.
Alex, next time put a big microfibertowel to protect the roof. The interesting thing is that there are also video's where they smear the rubbers to stop the noise. That also works.
Thanks man but this was definitely something loose and not just rubber squeaks! it Hasn't made a noise since then! I also tried a few other methods off camera before this video and they didn't work...
Great that was driving me crazy also keep up the good work
Glad I could help Joe!🔥trying my best to keep up content just hard with work and travel, I’m backlogged like 2 years almost of content (not just car content but work now too)
hi mate i have found that by doing this it makes the sunroof too low and not aligned with the roof. visually not good. did you check how it looks after you adjusted it?
Hey man, yeah I checked my alignment afterwards and it seemed fine with no major gaps, i moved mine all the way down first time round and that looked funny but centering those screws was the move on the S3. Had to have my palm inside on the glass to lift it properly while tightening
My sq5 does exactly that, tge sunroof has been serviced as per the Audi schedule and it still rattles, as soon as I tilt the roof it stops rattling the noise is only from the left side, hopefully your fix doesn’t put the glass under tension
I definitely will be giving this a try on my Golf 7R
I tried this fix and it worked. Thank you has I had this annoying rattle for such along time. No one else is talking about this.
Glad to hear it worked Flyn! It’s so annoying
my 15' Q5 roof is a nightmare.
I wonder if your solution with work on my panoramic roof model
I’ve never looked at those ones yet however it’s worth a shot if you can find 2 set screws with some adjustment try centering them and tightening them well
Have you tried ? Did it work?
Did it work?
The noise actually makes me hate my car, my car rattles like a bitch and its a 2015
have you tried these screws? If yes, maybe spray some Q20/WD40 on areas that could touch if it's a squeeky sound!
otherwise hit me up on IG with a vide if you keep struggling! @alex_aka_dev
Definitely sooo talented!!😘😘 well done my baba! ❤️
Thank you so much flower! you're the best!
Thanks
Yea thats great but I got no screws whatsoever on my audi sunroof
yeah that's a bit of a tough one... have you tried putting some rubber care products on the seals? maybe check other parts too to see if there is any adjustment that can be done to set the height of the glass
All audi pano roofs have this issue. Here its the dame sound on my Q5....
Worth checking if there are any alignment screws u can adjust the glass with
@@alex_aka_dev yeah I've heard about the screws. It seems that they are behind a cover. I'l check it next weekend. 😅
Sick video 👌🏻keep it up
Thanks Hein boet😛🎉🔥long time no see bro, Vid het die kuier dae history gemaak chomma😬
Audi forces these sunroofs on us. It comes as a standard feature on my Audi q5 sport model here in Australia. Car is less than a year old and I already hear squeaky noises from sunroof … annoying
Whhhaaatttt a difference!!!😂❤️
Indeed! massive differnce!
Om te dink… 2 skroefies kan ‘n kopseer weg vat😂🙌🏻
daar was verseker n paar skroefies los in my kop as gevolg van dit! XD
Thanks for this video…I was able to sort out my sunroof as well
Always a pleasure man!💪🔥
That just made mine wirse
Where did you align the bolts too? Are they centre and did you put pressure on the glass to get seated properly on the bracket?
Did I just spend 11 minutes watching you screw two screws?
Yes! Hah, editing👀Stories from nothing😂
@@alex_aka_dev I mean its not like you realised you haven't finished with the longer video and needed to put something out
@@lethabomohale977 nah id only have to put something out if I had a schedule🤔but im working on it👀
I have an Audi RS3 Sedan from 2019(only 20k kms) with the same problem and its so frustrating... Audi told me that they need to disassemble the entire roof (fuck them). I´ll try this strategy and I hope it works but I'm afraid of doing it and that later the system will break. It seems easy but I don't usually have good luck hahaha Is it too risky?
Fuck em bro! tuning shops know how to fix most common issues more than most brand dealer mechanics👀 try it like it seriously worked on mine it still taps and from time to time but nothing I wouldnt say isnt just body flex over the road or something🔥
@@alex_aka_dev Really, these types of videos save lives .. Thank you very much for your contribution to the community. At the moment I am on vacation but when I am back home I will try and bring my experience here. May the Force be with you
@@davidnienhaus95 Thanks Bro! Let me know if it helps! otherwise WD40 or Q20 the seals XD heard it helps for squeeks!
@@alex_aka_dev I´ll try it . Thanks mate :))
@@davidnienhaus95 did it work? Mine got worse
my q5 is having the same problem npw stupid car
Give this a try, it should help out a lot. It works on the Q7 from what the comments say
