You know, Pat, I never seem to think about sunroof maintenance for some reason. I keep my car machine polished and shampooed. I do the other maintenance as well. I appreciate this strong reminder. Tomorrow, while I'm bored to tears sitting at home, avoiding the virus, I now have a plan. Thank you!
Nice video but it would have really helped if you showed how to apply the silicone to the seals.
Still baffles me how low the subscribers are on this channel, I still think of Motorweek as a pioneer in the auto info industry and once a giant force not be reckoned with
People would rather subscribe to boys putting on make up instead of actually learning something. It’s a shame
Very well presentation and straight to the point! 10/10
Pat always had the best advice.
Great video. Concisely and well explained. Many thanks.
This was super informative and helpful. Very well done.
I just watched a 1985-1986 Motorweek marathon where in one episode Pat did....sunroof maintenance. Info is amazingly similar 35 years later!
Excellent thank you from the UK 👏👏👏👏 I've liked and subscribed
Right on. My wife and I just bought a vehicle with a sunroof. I always thought that they were maintenance free. learn something every day.
I found the drain tubes on my old Explorer were both disconnected and the headliner would get wet whenever it rained. Most likely a previous owner had been too rough in trying to clean the drains.
3-in-One makes a dry lube for garage doors. Been using it for years on hinges, rollers, tracks, door and padlocks. Safe for use on or around rubber, Plastics and vinyls. It goes on dry so it will never collect or attract dust.
Excellent quality, thanks!
Thank you for this helpful information 👍
Very clever tip to use canned air (low pressure) to help clean out the drains. Thank you.
thks PAT------great info on sunroof's
Well done!! Thank you.
Any extra advice for car owners without a garage or carport who live in states like Florida?
Was just charged $250 at the dealership to "clean out debris and grease the track" on my Sunroof after it became impossible to close. 😵
thank you sir great tips and advices ,,..,subbed immediately...
Concise video with good tips and background information on what NOT to do and why. Well done, sir. My mechanic charged me $45 to put grease up there. I paid the bill and never went back to him again. You can screw me once....
I use weed trimmer (weed eater) line to run through the drains. It’s flexible, I always have it on hand, and can still used on the trimmer.
This is dope!
good advice. thx
great vid, thanks for uploading, the vw pano roof leak, root cause and fix in 3 and a half mins, WOW!!
I use a 24" piece of weedwacker line, stick it in the hole, and twist it a few times in each direction, then run a little water thru it as a test.
Is it good to put PTFE spray on all hinges and sliding parts or what can you recommend? Thanks
Man lots of sunroof haters. I likes them!
Hi. I would like to know how to recalibrate a panorama from an audi q5. After I disassembled it to replace the curtain, it does not close properly, and remains partially open. I would like to know if and how it is done with vcds .Thanks
How should I maintenance the gasket to keep it in good shape?
My 2021 Camry xse moonroof is working anymore it was just working for me the left side is not moving but the right side is
I have a leak in my trunk. Can it be coming from a clogged sunroof?
Do I need to get my sunroof maintained if I always keep it closed? I never open mine.
My sunroof will close all steps except the final step where it lowers. Any tips on how to address that issue?
2:47 I would after cleaning the rubber , spray it with 303 Protectant and let in soak in for hours , then to wipe up excess with a microfiber towel .
I have 2013 Regal sunroof never opened . Bought new never opened sunroof .Should I service it ?
I need to do this for my sunroof. Thing is squeaking like crazy.
I have a problem with my sunroof / panoramic roof, on my KIA Ceed running very slow when trying to close the roof, it sounds like the electric motor is working hard, and in a few cases it has stopped during closing and driven back into open position . I have lubricated guide rails but I think it can instead be due to dirt by electric motor, gear, belt, is there any way to clean and lubricate these parts?
did you ever find a fix to this, mines do the same.. they start closing real slow or opening real slow and sometimes they struggle to open
Anyone have problems with the sunroof opening on its own....suspect electrical connection issue???
Do you just spray silicone spray on sunroof moving parts?
I have kia sportage 2019 With panoramic roof
from what I understand, you spray silicone on the rubber seals to keep them in good condition.
the moving part should be sprayed with dry lube, as stated in the video.
Is it ok to always use the auto stop/start feature on the car? I feel the constant starting puts a strain on the starter motor and the battery. I would appreciate your feelings on this. Thank you.
Disable it if you can. Wears out the starter and battery , even if they say it doesn't.
Supposedly these vehicles have different starters that can handle the increased usage.
The starter motor is upgraded for longer life due to the repeated starts. I work at an FCA dealer and only seen one ever go. The batteries on Stop/Start cars are AGM deep cycle type, and in some vehicles they have two batteries, a regular sized one and a small motorcycle sized one. Battery life in these applications vary, but seem to have a shorter life.3-4 years and they need a new battery(s). The newest thing we have is E-Torque, which is a Stop/Start system which uses a 48 Volt Belt Starter Generator, and a 48 Volt Battery pack. The vehicle is still otherwise a 12 Volt based system, with an AGM 12 Volt Battery and conventional starter which is used for initial starting of the vehicle. For Stop/Start restarts, the 48 Volt BSG is used. The 12 Volt battery is charged through a power invertor in the 48 Volt battery pack.
Our 2018 VW Tiguan was bought back due to it leaking and causing mold so strong in smell you couldn't even drive the car.
I have a 14 Kia optima ex and I tried your dry lube recommendation and it made my sunroof worse than it was. Going to try white lithium grease to see if it saves me a lot of money from taking it to the dealer
Update. Blaster White lithium grease saved my sunroof! DO NOT use dry lube it will NOT work!!
How’d it work out after you tried lithium grease?? I just stumbled upon this video because I’m trying to clean my 14 Kia optima sxl LOL
@@user-xf5dj1up8g It ran perfectly after! Just make sure you clean it thoroughly before and remove any particles that can cause blockage in the tracks. Apply a light but generous amount to the inside of the tracks kinda like this video. Test it and see where the most points of contacts are and wipe down any excess.
The panoramic sunroof of my Tucson 2020 squeaks whenever I hit a bump what should I do in this case?
Regards!
I use 130psi to clean the drain tubes
Where are the tubes on this specific car
Good info
I have a panoramic sunroof on my 2018 Jeep Cherokee limited and love it.. I don't think I would ever fight another vehicle without a sunroof or panoramic. Like he said 15 minutes of maintenance goes a long ways the sunroof haters are the ones that are lazy and don't want to take them to do anything God forbid you have to clean the piece of glass
I have a 2019 VW with a leaking sunroof. This is about cleaning glass. This is a design flaw. The drain tubes are either angled wrong or pinched.
Could you gun oil to lube the rails?
Why on earth would you put anal lube on a car?? LOL Why not just use Boy Butter..LOL
Dialectric grease is not a great idea to use?
awesome!
I had a sunroof in my 2012 Toyota Prius and it would annoy me when my friend would get in the car and open it while the sun ☀️ beams down on your head uncomfortably. Then it’s too bright to see on the road.
I don't like sunroofs because they will leak and possibly shatter. My mother's 2004 explorer had a sunroof and leaked on the front passenger floor. She acknowledged me that her next will NOT have a sunroof. My mother's 2017 Edge don't have a sunroof.
@@kyron2092 😂😂😂😂
Her 2017 Edge is a titanium model with option group 300A (base titanium) which don't include panoramic roof. It's a former rental vehicle.
Is having a sunroof car bad
Yes. IDC for sunroofs because they are prone to leak if you don't take great care of them. Plus, they take up lots of headroom.
Just wanted to warn you, that you should first read what does manufacturer of your car recommend. For example the silicon based lubricant is not recommended for the purpose of lube sunroofs of VAG group cars. They use synthetic lube developed for NASA called Krytox (for seals) and lithium lube (for rails).
Am I the only one here who doesn’t even use the sunroof in my car? My Dad doesn’t even have a sunroof in his Dodge Journey! He’s 6 ft 6 and the moving parts for the sunroof take up precious headroom.
My panoramic sunroof on my F-150 has broken twice. I'll never get a sunroof again.
I worked at a ford dealer and saw this happen all the time. Its a massive job, the whole headliner has to come out and about 4 guys have to lift the sunroof out of the roof of the truck.
Ricardo Chavez - My Integra’s sunroof still works fine and it’s 22-years-old.
Panoramic sunroofs (moonroofs) are different than just a 'normal' moonroof, which tend to be more reliable than pano roofs.
Actually your response should be, I will never buy a FORD again. I have owned many Japanese cars with sunroofs, mazdas and hondas never ever had an issue. Quit buying American crap, you won't have crappy issues.
Sunroofs are just another silly phase (fad) that the auto industry is using for additional profit. If you want one because you use it, fine. But I suspect most folks never open it but maybe open the shade. The problem is that as soon as you want one of the trim levels beyond basic you get a sunroof whether you want it or not. I deliberately ordered an S model VW Sportwagen so I would not have a panoramic sunroof (that is prone to leaking.)
It’s not by coincidence that a VW is being used for demonstrating sunroof maintenance in this video.
Except that a Gen 7 Jetta doesn’t use drain tubes to evacuate water.
A vehicle with a panoramic sunroof should have been featured. Panoramic sunroofs are notorious for water leaks. Just ask any VW technician what he/she thinks about panoramic sunroofs, especially here in the north.
What kind of drains does a panoramic sunroof use? Im asking because it looks like my front drains (in corners of sunroof) drain into a gutter-type slot above the windshield and simply drain down the outsides of the windshield (the gutter-type slot is covered in a rubber gasket). At least that is what it looks like to me
Dude, don't hold the air and vacuum hose on a bare body (paint) - You can accidentally scratch it...
Rip
My comment is Goss wears a mechanic uniform like he’s going to work to build & fix a car. His hands never seen grease in decades.
I believe he washes his hands before these segments but he mostly manages his garage now days I think .. Most quality shops have their mechanics wearing gloves to protect them from cancer caused by the oil and other chemicals under the hood
Have never understood why anyone wants a sunroof. Sounds glamorous but in reality they leak and the only time you want to use them is when it's nice outside but then the sun beats down on you uncomfortably.
I agree. Especially after watching this. I do not want to have to deal with all the maintenance and upkeep. Also they reduce headroom. Certain option packages and trim levels FORCE you to have a sunroof, and so a lot of people who don't want sunroofs are stuck getting them.
Moonroofs are more common than sunroofs. It can be nice to let more light in with a closed moonroof. Plus, the tilt feature can be handy for venting.
If it's a factory installed power sunroof it will have a sliding shade to keep the sun off the car's occupants.
Knock on wood, but I've had a few cars with a sunroof and have never had any issues. They also come with a sliding shade that keeps the heat out.
Solution to problems with sunroofs is to not get one
xadam2dudex My dad doesn’t have a sunroof in his Dodge Journey! He’s 6 ft 6 and the mechanical part for the sunroof take up precious headroom, so he prefers no sunroof.
@@jacobg.witmer yep they do reduce headroom on some car it can be detrimental
xadam2dudex I don’t mind having one. I just flat out not use it most of the time. When I do use it, it’s a chimney when the AC isn’t working! My Kia Sportage has one!
Also my Kia: It has a cassette player I still use these days in 2020! Lol 😂
Definitely don't want a sunroof. The idea of a sunroof is way better than the reality of a sunroof.
These troughs become clogged with leaves and debris and. Zzzzzz.
Didn't say ANYTHING about how to access the tracks. No more info than talking with service writer.
sunroof is the dumbest invention ever , if you want a "spacious feel" go ride a bike, if you want to see the sky, step out of the car, more problems than benefits
Thanks Pat for everything! R.I.P
He’s fixing cars in heaven now, and I’d like to think going down to hell to fix grave digger and some dragsters. What an absolute icon.
@@wstreff oh my gosh, I JUST came across his page. He seems so knowledgeable, genuine, and gentle with his passion. I’m sorry you guys lost a great person to go to on here :(
