  • Checking out the rarest of the Trek Marlin series, the Marlin 8 is full of all the features you’d want as a mountain biker except still missing one keep part.
    The worst part is it’s inability to a have an internal dropper Prost is a bit of an inconvenience but manageable. The hardest part is valuing whether is worth this much money with out one?

    The air shock and 12 speed really swayed me over the 7. Should be an amazing trail and commuting rig as I don’t do a lot of downhill.

    I have one. The SRAM derailer sucks. Out of adjustment even when it is in adjustment. The dropper thing was done on purpose to push people to move up to the more expensive lines.

    Nice video. I have had one for a month now and am enjoying it very much. Only thing I would change would be both tires being the same width. Just my preference. Thanks.

    I had a dropper added to my m5. You can go internal halfway and zip tie up to the back to the seatpost.

    Nice ! So.. for trips and rides climbs and downs for scotland mountains.. would tou recommend Roscoe or Marlin would suit better for day trips in Scotland?

    Helpful video. I have been looking at the Marlin 8 and Roscoe 7. I like the dropper post feature on the Roscoe 7 which is the bike I would prefer to go with. Instead of buying the Marlin and wishing I would have bought the Roscoe. Are there other bikes in the Roscoe 7 price range that you have reviewed/recommend? Or that I should also consider? I am riding a 1999 Kona Nunu and looking forward to an upgrade lol 😄

    Have to agree that the lack of dropper post or routing for it seems like an oversight.

    I was wanting the marlin 8 but went with the roscoe 6 because it was available mid march. I thought i might have buyers remorse, but it rolls better than i thought and I love the dropper. So no regrets.

    The Marlin geometry feels really comfortable for me. I test rode the 6 and 7 at my local shop, but not the 8. None of my local shops have an 8 in my size. I’m debating whether the 8’s upgrades are something I’d really notice with moderate trail riding. Specifically the front shock. I’m 175lbs and not sure if the air shock would be any more comfortable/smooth than the coil for me. What would your advice be if I stopped into your shop?

      @CARLOSTEIN Před rokem +1

      Oh, believe me, It will feel very diferent. Before I ride Marlin 8, I only knew the classic spring fork (diferent qualities) and I felt god (not amazed, but not dissapointed); but, then I try the Rockshox Judy and, men, puuuffff: It's just another level. I highly recommend you to get that bike.

  • @FranNDR

    Thanks for the video Chris. What I don't understand is why the Roscoe is 1.5kg heavier than the Marlin. I'm thinking to buy the Marlin 8, it's still cheaper than the Roscoe and the X-caliber and although no dropper post, it has quick release to be able to drop it manually. Not great for racing of course, but for an amateur I think that's good enough

    • @goodluckchrisclark
      @goodluckchrisclark  Před 2 lety +4

      No problem! Yes the Dropper post is probably most of that weight! The Marlin will still hold its own on the flowing climby trails. Roscoe will win downhill but could loose up hill!

    I had the same wheels on my 2021 X Caliber 7 and the 'cup & cone' bearings failed within four months. Why don't Trek supply their whole range with sealed bearing hubs. Replaced mine with a set of Mavic Crossmax.

    I am NOT a Mountain Biker. I recently owned a Marlin (5) and used it ONLY for city riding and on city trails. After years of road cycling it was an excellent change of pace. Now I’m considering moving up a level to the Marlin (8). What are the major differences between the (5 and 8) and is the (8) worth buying over the (5) for the type of city riding I enjoy!

    • @kevinmiller3163
      @kevinmiller3163 Před rokem

      Yes 3 major differences is the drivetrain itself has improved quite nicely, the forks are now air suspension instead of coil and the most obvious is the tubeless tires. Now keep in mind this is the new 2022-2023 marlin 8

    • @TrizerFlame
      @TrizerFlame Před rokem

      You can also lock your fork which is something useful on city terrain. The 1x12 will give you speed but if you don’t need or want the upgrades then the 5 would satisfy your needs. I own the 7 and use it when riding between city tails and dirt.

      @@goodluckchrisclark Indeed, I just learned that the 2019 Marlin still had a cable port on the seat tube to route an internal dropper but that port was removed on the 2020 Marlin and later models. Why they would choose to just remove that port is a sheer mystery. I guess to boost sales of the Roscoe..
