  • Having recently bought a Mountain bike, The Trek Marlin 8 Gen 3, 2023. I finally got around to taking it for its maiden voyage. I haven't been riding a lot, due to some injuries i picked up, during and after the Bikepacking series. But I simply can't wait any longer! I found myself some trails to discover and put in various different surfaces to put her through her paces, to see how good a bike this Trek is. I've ridden plenty of offroad trails in my time, on a Tandem, road bike and a couple of different gravel bikes. But its now time to try them on a bike that is actually made to ride them. So top of Cheddar Gorge anyone?

      Thank you, The Roscoe was also on my list, but I wasn’t keen on the colour schemes. But there wasn’t a lot between the two bikes. Although the Marlin does also have mounting points, if I ever used it for bikepacking.

      Thanks Paul, I’m really enjoying riding this bike and getting another dimension to my cycling. I had planned a two week break when I went on holiday to Northern Ireland with the family, but we all can back with Covid. So I’m currently recovering from that and taking things easy. Although, that’s easier said than done, as we applied to be Puppy Raisers for Guide Dogs Uk and were given our first Puppy, Cooper! So the last few days have been a bit of a whirlwind. Hopefully though, I’ll be back out in the bike in no time.

    Great first foray into the world of MTB Darren. It will get easier, and you will gain more confidence. It can be brutal, but a full body workout is always guaranteed. Its ace in the Winter also, which is pretty much 11 months of the year here in the Uk.

    Hey Darren! Pick up a pair of bike gloves for riding in hot weather. They’ll make sure your hands stay gripped to the handlebars! I also saw another comment about bumbags, which I believe that commenter was referring to a saddle bag aka one that fits underneath the seat. Stowing items on handlebar bags is great for long distance bike packing, however that extra weights on the handlebars can make riding through technical trails tricky. Overall, you’re a natural mountain biker telling from this video, enjoy the off-road world!

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  Před 9 měsíci

      Thank you, I wasn’t sure that you could put a saddle bag on the bike, as it has a dropper post. Which was why I asked how MTB riders carry stuff. So I’ll have a look and see if it’s possible. I haven’t worn gloves on any bike for years, but Mark did tell me I’d need some for MTB riding. It may hinder my operation of the cameras though, so it’s something I’ll also need to try and experiment with.

    Love my Trek Marlin 7. Don't see the point of a gravel bike hardtails so much more comfy if a little bit slower but I don't care about that as comfy equals cycle for longer!. Get comfort grips with the built in adjustable bar end grips changing hand positions is a game changer!.

      I completely agree now I’ve been spoilt with suspension! I’ve had a few rides on it now and luckily the handlebars and grips have seemed ok since. I love this bike, it just puts a smile on my face riding it and makes off-road a lot easier!

    I'm currently looking at getting this bike, just the weight of it puts me off at over 14.5kg in size M and the Sram SX set up. Is it a heavy feeling bike and how does it go on the road/pavement with a slacker geometry ?

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  Před 7 měsíci

      I can’t say I’m a mountain bike expert and how one should feel, as I’ve mainly ridden road and gravel. But I have a very light road bike and a heavier road bike. The weight of the bike is never something that you notice so much riding, as long as you have the gears. This Marlin has more than enough gears to get you up anything, plus I’m nowhere near as fit as I would like to be currently. The bike itself doesn’t feel heavy to me. I’ve only ridden it a handful of times and my only slight complaint is that the bottom bracket is noisy. But someone did comment that to equip the bike with the dropper post and group set, they’ve saved money by putting in a cheap BB, which will probably be the first thing I replace. I’m enjoying riding it so far, as it had made off road riding just a whole lot more fun.

    Good work on your first mtb ride...I went from mtb to road and youve done the opposite. So some friendly advice that may help...First of all get some baggy clothes and a helmet with a peak 😂 You can also buy mtb bumbags which are useful for tubes/tools etc so you don't have the weight on the bars.
    Also when you take the grips off there are lines on the bar, so you can cut them down if they're too wide. You can also buy bars thay have a bit of a rise which may help...Keep up the good work mate

    You're not being uncool by using a handlebar bag, I've had one on my mtb for years to carry spares tubes etc. Enjoy - using a mtb on terrain like that is perfect!

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Thanks! I’d normally have just whacked a saddle bag on the bike, but with the dropper post, it didn’t look like it would work! Plus, I’ve got to have somewhere to store my Jelly beans 🫘 😂

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I went and tried the sizing in a bike shop as looking at the recommended sizes, I should have been a small. But having sat on one, I was easily a medium. I’m 5ft 6 with a 29inch inside leg. Hope that helps, but if you still not sure, go and try the sizing in a bike shop.

    Marlin 8 or roscoe 6 not sure yet

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  Před 4 měsíci

      Those were the two that I’d narrowed it down too as well. I just liked the colour of the Marlin 8 more than the colours the Roscoe had. I think it was green. I’m pleased with my choice so far, but I’m only new to MTB, so time will tell. The reviews I saw had them pretty similar, but if remember correctly, the Roscoe had 27.5” wheels and the Marlin has 29’s, and all the reviews said to go for 29’s. I’ve no idea what the difference is, but my 29’s roll over anything. Good luck choosing John!!

    As a died in the wool roadie, I’m thinking of extending my choices and having either a Mtb, keeping the wife or getting a gravel bike. It’s a struggle deciding. I keep vacillating.
    I think I need a road bike, gravel AND a Mtb!……and a wife😁

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  Před 9 měsíci +1

      😂 Just buy a road bike, that doubles up as a gravel bike, like my Domane, convince the wife that at 2 for 1 it’s a bargain and you’ve saved a couple of grand! Spend half of it on the Mountain bike, and give the missus a £1000 to spend on whatever she wants! Then you both win!! 😜

The gate was already open, and I wasn’t sure what to do. I’ve experienced a scary situation with Cows, when I was walking my dog. They are aggressive and charge as a group. So I’m not surprised at that number!

      @@DarrenPhillips My first mountain bike. I'm was a good BMXer, but that was 40 years ago. The geometry of the mountain bike is new for me. Most recently, I had more of a cruiser/upright position bike. So now I'm pushing myself on the stationary bike a bit so when this weather breaks, I won't be so winded. Wouldn't hurt to shed 10-20 lbs as well.
