    Great reviews Matty! I’ve got that exact 2022 Marlin 7 (red/marigold) on hold up in northern Canada at my local shop and can’t wait till all the snow and ice are gone! Typically ride a mix of packed recreational trails, some urban asphalt trails and will be out on some cross country with a mix of some techy, hills etc. As a less-aggressive rider (into 40’s 😯) after watching allot of your vids I think the 7 will be awesome! I think a PNW cascade dropper will be in order but will see how it feels before dropping the $$ on that. Definitely will be doing a review on my channel as soon as I can get out with it!

    Crazy that they didn't put the dropper post on the 8. Shimano vs. SRAM is always a preference thing, i prefer the SRAM 1x12 but it's not a deal breaker. Tubeless rims can be managed with some rim tape. Seems like Trek is trying to leave room and not step on the Roscoes toes. I agree with your conclusion. I wish everything had a dropper 🤣

    After listening to your video I am going to tell my local kingsport, tn Larry's cycle shop that I want to cancel my marlin 7 purchased onnmjbday but i was going to pick it up later on this week.
    Instead I am going to buy the Cannondale mtn bike that was $1,500.00 but they would let me have it for 10% off. It comes with drop post seat already installed on the bike.

  • @Vector853

    Where I live the difference is less than $100 between the bikes. That makes me feel the Marlin 8 is a better deal.

  • @JoshKablack
    @JoshKablack Před rokem +1

    It's about the size of the pie, not the number of slices:
    Assuming both are running 2.20 tires, the 7 ships with a low gear of 17.62 gear inches, while the 8 comes with a low gear of 17.33 gear inches. So that 12 speed cassette isn't exactly giving you more low gears. It's just very marginally lower.
    It's at the top end where that having a tooth chainring instead of the 28 matters enough to notice. There the SRAM setup gives you 78.86 gear inches compared to the 73.66 of the Shimano.

    Between the rims, forks, and drivertrain, it seems like it's worth the additional 300 bucks to get the 8. The no dropper post thing is so dumb. That should be standard equipment for any bike over $1,000 IMO.

    Trek Marlin 7 is fine for most cases, however $200-$300 upgrade to Trek Marlin 8 is good for the 12x1 gears if do you do a fair amount of uphill riding, the front suspension if you want smoother rides on trails, and the grippy Maxxis Ardent tyres which helps better stability on trails (dont know much about the Bontrager tyres on the 7). Also with the 8 you can later upgrade to better tyres and front suspension, to make it like a Roscoe, which I own and love :)

    As far as the derailleur, sram got a very delicated ones and they are far away from shimano concerning the clutch (they called lever switch), so for me there is no alternative, shimano only.

      It depends what you want tho because the marlin sets and roscoes are completely different with the heavier weight in the roscoe and way fatter tyres the roscoe is an amazing bike but almost only for trial since it may feel a bit sluggish on rode
      I have the x caliber 9 which is perfect for my 50-50 road off-road rides

    Spot on, Matty, can you imagine you've become an expert at this stuff? The Marlin line is a bit confused to me, when you get to the higher end of the range the bike doesn't make sense. If you're going to spend 1200-1300 on a bike because you want to ride off road, you're better off getting the bottom range Roscoe (if you're a Trek maniac like someone I know). I think you usually get the best value by getting the lower end of the range of the next higher model line, you can upgrade later if needed. It always makes sense to buy as much bike as you need, with room to grow, but I think you get the least value when they start putting lots of more expensive options on the lower range frames.

      The cheapest roscoe comes with bad forks though doesn't it?

    • @mattj6676
      @mattj6676 Před 2 lety +1

      @@jbloggs751 I don’t know that it comes with “bad” forks, but it does come with less expensive ones. The point is that you can upgrade a better frame down the road to improve the bike if you want or need to, but when you buy a less good frame setup that’s as good as it will ever get. The Marlin is a decent bike, but it’s never going to be as capable for rugged off-road use as the Roscoe because one bike is designed for light trails and roads and the other is designed for off-road specifically. In my opinion for most folks there are better brands out there for the money, so I wouldn’t go with either bike, though they are still good bikes. For a mass produced line, the Giant Fathom is a better bike than the Roscoe and is hundreds of dollars cheaper. Hard to beat Trek’s colors, though…

  • @kwaktak
    @kwaktak Před 2 lety +3

    Between those two I’d take the Marlin 7. I think the Roscoe 7 would make more sense than the Marlin 8 if you’re riding more trails. You can still go tubeless on the Connection rims and upgrade the tires for about $200 and you can get a dropper post and lever for about $200 as well. The fork is pretty much the most important thing to consider IMO though. The Judy is probably better than the old XC-30 but many people upgrade to Rockshox Recon Silver which go for about $250. Finally. I don’t see an advantage of having 12 gear over 10 really. If you’re shifting under load you’re just beating your chain more.

    • @kwaktak

    But you’re only comparing the 2 bikes. In the uk the price difference is £100 between the marlin 7 and 8 so for that fact it’s a no brainier to get the better shox tubeless ready set up and the 1x 12 set up. The roscoe 7 is an extra £500 over the marlin 8 and the similar price roscoe to the marlin 8 is the 6 which has 1 x 10 set up and shimano drivetrain. Can’t really compare the marlin and roscoe. Or use the dropper post as a reason to buy the 7 over the 8. IMO

  • @ca-lt1fc
    @ca-lt1fc Před 2 lety +2

    i have a 2022 trek marlin 8 and IMO it's clearly a dead end Walmart upgrade design and my worst bike purchase ever!
    Currently I am looking for another frame to move my upgraded components to and finish building out, put my Marlin 8 back to original showroom configuration and sell it!
    Rear is non-boosted 135mm QR, hubs are formula without an optional XD freehub or thru axle end caps so if you want to run GX or above, have to change wheelset but again that's not easy when working with the 135mm hub limitation. Drive train is SRAM SX with Shimano freehub so your ONLY cassette upgrade option without changing rear wheel is NX...GX and above use the XD driver but even if you change wheel GX 10-52 will not fit to 135mm so no matter what you do your highest possible cassette upgrade is NX, headtube is 1.125 straight not designed for tapered fork head tubes, Trek has removed the hole at the bottom of the seat tube for dropper post cable routing. When inquiring with Trek support about thru axle conversion, their answer is not possible, Marlin is QR ONLY!
    They offer a kickstand and a rear rack so maybe Trek has decided the IMO overpriced and over touted Marlin line is a family weekend neighborhood recreational cruiser.
