Matty whatever you do….. do not settle on size. Get the size that fits you best, you want that comfort. It’s challenging to decide off a short test ride but you have history with trek sizing & know what fits you. Color scheme, I like them all lol.. You can’t go wrong but if you want that blue, get it. You’ll be happy you waited & got what you truly wanted. Thanks for asking for our input, greatly appreciated. Looking forward to any content you put out, it’s all good stuff. Stay safe.

I got the marlin 7 a little over a year ago and i really like it. I use it mostly on trails and it did not dissapoint.
The large was the right size for me and i am 1.82 meters or around 6 feet. I do not have anything bad to say about the bike, it is one of the best beginner bikes in my opinion for mountainbiking and i think it would be a great commuter. I have the colour you are riding in the test and i really like it but that is my kind of taste. So if you like the way the bike feels go for it!
Also if you think the bike is to far to reach you can take one size smaller or maybe change the stem to a shorter one.
In the beginning when i had it for a week i got alot of backpain when riding but after more and more rides this disapeared and i have no more backpain or anything now. Alot of my friends with other bikes got the same problem.

Matty, my wife got a new Marlin 7 and felt a little hunched over too. I put a 45 degree stem on it and she loves it. Sat her up more and took some pressure off her hands. It was the best $20 I’ve spent. I just got a new X-Caliber 7 and gonna do the same to it. For the money these have great parts. I feel fast on our bikes.

I’m 6’ and ride a large Specialized Rockhopper, fits me perfect.
If your reach is too far, but the bike feels good, you can go to a shorter stem. They have an 80mm stem, I’d try a 50 or even a 35mm. I think the 50mm would be a good fit from what I can see

When it comes down to it, what can you do on the Marlin that you can't do on the Roscoe? If your friends are looking to go on long rides, maybe consider a different kind of bike that can't do what the ones you already have can do, like a road bike? Also, if you feel hunched over now, it's going to feel a lot more after an hour on the thing. One thing I've learned about you is that you definitely like shopping for bikes!

What's up bro, i'm from Brazil and last week i got a marlin 7, size Large, i'm 5'11. Very fun bike, today I rode 30 miles and have no problems, really good bike. The only thing I upgraded that changed significantly the ride was the pedals, I put a Bontrager Commuter and bro this pedal is awesome. Hope you have fun like I'm having.

I just got one. It’s feels quick. I took it on some hills and it tackles them no problem. I have the medium frame, I’m 5’7”. Great way to cross train. I used a Huffy bike, it’s just too hard to pedal that and it struggles to get up the hills. The Marlin 7 does that without a problem. It’s not that expensive to get one too.

This is a year later. Seems there are plenty of 2022 Marlin's available right now. Just bought one myself. I'm 5'8" and felt the Medium was better over the M/L. I got that same sense about feeling hunched over feeling at first, but then also, the different geometry from my cannondale hybrid certainly gives it a different feel, to be expected. After a bit of adjusting, I feel really comfortable. Can't wait to hit the trails.

I purchased a Marlin 7 less than a month ago (ML) I'm 175cm tall and I had to adjust the seat to its maximum position forward and had the bike mechanic at the shop put a spacer in the handle bars to raise them a little. It helped with the hunching of my back and strain on my arms and shoulders. The spacer in the handle bars helped with my arms reaching for the handle bars. It's more comfortable after just those two minor adjustments and I'm able to do wheelies now 👍

Glad I did more research before buying a trek bike. Was going to be a marlin but realized the 2022 verve disc 3 works for me in my bike use.. I do not care for the 30tooth crank on the marlins for smooth fast trails. Pedal to fast at high speeds. The verve 3 has 2 crank . 1 at 30 tooth and second at 46 tooth. 46 tooth will get me better pedaling at higher speeds. Nice cushie suspension seat and ability to adjust handle bar. I have not ridden bike in a long time and more then ready to get back at it.
So on which bike to buy is looking strongly on how it will be mainly used.
Forgot to add a reply to your question. Maybe you already purchased a bike. Me, I am a bit ocd ish on what I do and buy. If its not just right continually bugs me. I would not have bought it if my reaction was yours and just held out. I am finding bikes easier to find now. Not great , but easier. Your expression and tone really seemed you would prefer a different color and quite possibly size bike. And to that your initial feeling of hunched over. Ones initial gut feeling are usually not best to ignore. Really sounded like you where trying to convince yourself. So for my opinion I would wait it out .

i am 5/8 and bought the large in miami green as there was no other options where I live.. I am still waiting on it to arrive though. it will be here mid march. What I was going to buy was the Trek roscoe 6 but the wait for that is december this year for the purple i wanted. The same for the marlin 8 which would have been the better buy with the air fork and the 1x12 set up
The problem in Australia is the supply. most bikes are slowly dribbling in. We have had a 300% increase in demand on bikes in this price point, which means everything sells quickly, and most is sold by the time it hits the stores.
If I find the reach is a bit long ill probaby buy new stem and bars to try adjust that way.

    Hey, Matty,
I'm 5'10" with a 31" inseam and ride a large Marlin 7 that is 3 years old. The frame is the same as the 2022s though. For commuting and gravel riding doing rides as long as 50 miles the large size has been comfortable for me with no leg cramps or back pains. I'd say that for technical trails it might be better to go with the medium/large though. While it will climb better and roll faster than your Roscoe, if you feel hunched over then technical descents on the Marlin may feel sketchy in comparison. FWIW I'm curious about the new 29er Roscoes.

I am way late to the party and now they've released the Gen 3. But I got a Marlin 7 Gen 2 (with a Recon Silver RL) mostly because there weren't many bikes in the shop, the price was right, it fit really well, and my cycling inseam is comically long.
So, I am 6' 3 1/2" (192cm) with an almost a 38" cycling inseam. Trek bike's sizing calculator gives me an error, telling me to re-check my measurements!! HAHA!
I got a 2XL in Nautical Navy with some upgrades from the shop. The XL 'should' fit in theory but I just looked weird sitting on the smaller size. When I tried the 2XL it just felt 'right' but yeah, the ride position is a bit more aggressive but it keeps a good amount of weight over the front tire which is also good. It's comfortable.
The Marlin is capable for what it is and it allows me to do the kind of riding I like to do. Like you said, it's super fun to ride!
I think I'm a little disappointed with bike sizes in general because with my cycling inseam, I am not sure if an XL Roscoe would fit. I also noticed that most fat bikes only come in XL. So, I'm a bit limited in terms of what will fit me.
I'd really love a high volume tire more trail oriented bike but this sounds difficult to find at a lower price point; There's really not a lot out there that looks like it would work.

Im sure you must have made a decision since this is an old video but still, i have the marlin 7, my height is 5.6 or 7 and i ride the m/l size. L9ve the bike. Shifting is smoothe. Love the whole experience and people notice the bike a lot.

Just bought a 2022 Marlin 7 in M/L size today. I’m 5’11”. Originally went to the store with the intention of getting the large. However on the large the reach was slightly too far for comfort, too hunched forward. The M/L was ever so slightly smaller and is a better fit. I find the handlebars a bit too wide so I’ll be taking an inch off each end.

I'm same height as you, but only 30 inseam
Do you think the medium would be too small?

    • @TheToastedChannel
      @TheToastedChannel Před 2 lety

@@jbloggs751 I also have a 30 inseam. Yes I think a medium would be too small. My son recently bought a Norco Storm 1 in a large size. I wish I had bought that. The geometry is ever so slightly more upright with better reach to the handle bars and overall a better fit for me. Something you might want to consider.

I don’t know if you have the Marlin 7 yet? I am 5”8 and feel comfortable on the large, i don’t feel like I am over reaching leg wise, however the hunched over feeling is there in the shoulders, so I am going to have to raise the stem. The red/marigold colour is all that was left, so instead of getting a navy I got this one. It’s a great bike and with the 29ers I absolutely love it. It’s a great all rounder, ace on the trails and lovely and smooth on the tarmac. The gears are so smooth on change and I just love the 1/10 drive train, never thought 10 gears would be enough, but I love it. Best of luck as they are going like hot cakes.

In 5'8 as well with a 30.5 inseam and treks website recommends a medium. A large is two sizes up from that? If you don't mind what is your inseam?

Returning to your roots :P I agree about the navy blue, it's a better looking bike, but the market is still super hot - if you're okay with the size I say go for it! The color will probably grow on you, I actually thought it looked decent in your video :) Plus Marlin is one of the most popular bikes around, good for the channel! What's the rule again, N+1+1? haha

I got a trek marlin 7 and I rode it 8.5 miles on the first day. Some on road some in dirt but basically if of it was on road. I see some small scratches on the front fork is that normal? They are not chips just small scratches. Is it damaging

If you want to commuter then just get a gravel bike.
Gravel bikes also work well as a bikepacking bikes. And considering you seem so psyched about all things connecting biking and dirt I assume you'd be interested in it.
But in the end it's your call.

In India, I ordered the Marlin 7 M/L size. I noticed your model has Maxxis tyres, not sure if I will same tyres here, I saw the Marlin 6 in the showroom has Bontrager tyres.

    • @MattyActive
      @MattyActive  Před 2 lety +1

It’s pretty fast for a mountain bike. Not too heavy, I think it would be a great bike for paved and gravel

I also have the same color. I was wanted something matte and dark, but in 2021, it's was the only one available. The color scheme definitely grew on me. I've been doing upgrades as I go, maybe a new rear cassette in my future.

  • @saddleweary9709

Large would be ok on trails but it's to long for commute. Neck and hand pain will come with that bike. Going by your arms stretched out on the vid. I'm sorry for telling you what to do, especially on the first vid I've seen from you :D. I did sub. I am 5' 10" and own a large, med / large and med ( the numbers count not the so called size ) but the med feels like it's part of me and the others, I feel like I'm a part of them if that makes any sense. One thing I've learned about buying bikes is take your time when choosing. Don't let the the industry fool you buy telling you to get one while it's available. Nice videos y'all

Reach has been the most important factor for me. If your hunched over, you might be able to get a shorter stem to help, but if you have the choice wait for the M/L frame. Being hunched over on a long ride kind of sucks imo
