I've been playing double bass for nearly five years and it still impresses me how amazing the instrument sounds.
That's what keeps us bringing back to music and instruemnts isn't it :) The magic of music and the instruemt!
Mostly because we very seldom hear it bowed these days.
This video deserves at least a million more views. I’ve never heard a double bass sound so versatile before. Fantastic playing.
With some good speakers, even a deaf man could enjoy this! Excellent work, love to see such dedication to this instrument. I'm not listening, I'm feeling.
A friend is playing this on his recital, so I thought I'd come by and listen to the original. Love the Berceuse! It's probably my favorite movement.
I've listened several times now, and I'm very impresssed and inspired. It's music like this that truly motivates me to practice. Can't wait to play this someday.
I’ve just fallen in love with the DB. Thank you. Cellos are for wimps! 😎

That's finally a professional thing. Good job man, u got the technique
dude.... wow
Fuck yeah
Wow, the sounds it makes are gorgeous. You're also really talented! By the way starting from 6:40 sounds like something straight off the game Vampyr and it's awesome.
You're a badass. Gonna get an extension and learn this
Can you please record 2 hours straight similar music is the only thing that is bringing me peace right now. Put some unaccompanied stuff on Spotify maybe?
fuckin incredible
Great sounds, I notice you trigger the low string once with first finger left hand. That is good. I have only seen a cellist do that while playing Kodaly . Thank you for the excellent music.
Замечательно
They way I can produce a short movie to this
Briljant. Veral mal oor Dirge en Berceuse.
Wonderful music, but I would also like some information about that bass - it has a fantastic sound!
Thank you! It is a very typical mid/late 19th century anonymous French bass from Mirecourt, probably made in the Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy workshop.
What have you done at 4:50? But exellence work!
At 4:50 I pluck the low C with the left hand just as I start bowing it. This is so that the string is already vibrating when the bowing begins, which makes the note speak faster and more reliably. (Happens again at 4:54 and probably some other times too - it's not a conscious technique!)
Amazing. Im interested in learning more about Dirge. I tried searching for information on the song/what year was written and by who. Could you help me? Im in awe
I refer you to the title of the video, which contains the answers to all your questions! Dirge is simply one of six movements from the larger work titled 'Six Vignettes'.
Great tone, that low C is huge. Are you using pirastro flat-chromes? Can't quite see the colour
Flat-Chromesteels, well spotted.
Hey what do you use to put your dots on your fingerboard?
They are wooden inlays that the luthier who built the fingerboard put in.
I love this suite! Do you happen to have an arrangement that doesn't require an extension?
Emily Gage You’ll probably find that all but the 3rd mvt. (Dirge) can be adapted easily enough for an extension-free performance - often the lower notes are only there for additional resonance. Unfortunately the Dirge can’t really be arranged otherwise because of how reliant it is upon the changing pitch of the lowest open string. For mvts. 1, 2, 5 and 6 however, I would just tune the bottom string down to D, and mvt. 4 (Berceuse) is simply in standard tuning. That being said, getting an extension (with all the gates) might be the best decision you ever make and I can hardly recommend it enough...
@@avbigband thank you, I'm excited to play your piece! I am planning on purchasing a bass with an extension eventually, definitely a worthwhile investment!
I saw a guy on a train with one of these, can they create something for these people because this bass is HUGE. I felt sorry for the guy, especially when it is in the case, it's like 7 feet tall.
