  • In this video, I rode a tandem in LA with a total stranger! Well, not a total stranger. I was on her podcast, Presta Story Valve. We hopped on the Flyer Tandem with Amy and had quite the adventure. We talked about all things cycling, how Amy left the corporate world to become a bike mechanic, how she started her podcast, and perhaps most importantly, how sometimes you just have to put yourself out there to create the life that you want. We talk about Amy’s love for the Los Angeles cycling community, and how the people she rides with embody that adventurous spirit.

    I've never once biked for "exercise" or to race or to be competitive. When I was a kid a bike was the only way we could go anywhere without mom. Something weird happens to most people when they get their drivers license that makes them think that going some place on a bike is maybe childish or something. It's cultural brainwashing.

    To rebrand bikes in the US, there must be a clear distinction between a sports bike and a transport/commute bike. It's that simple

    • @RenM908
      @RenM908 Před 2 lety +3

      But it’s not even just bikes. The public transit is equally not as good in the US with the exception of major cities like NYC, Seattle, etc and even then it could be better. Im surprised there is no high speed rail anywhere in the US. I think CA is just making one now.
      As someone from a European country (Denmark), there needs to be an overhaul/rebrand of your non-car infrastructure. I lived in NYC for 10 years and it was easy getting around but I have traveled to other states and it’s definitely hard to get around unless you have a car in other places.

    Wow, this is weird... Just watched Oldshovel winter camping in Utah on a fat bike and now here are you guys in t-shirts!
    Really enjoyed it, thanks. Sixty-three year old pwME who finds walking painful and exhausting, bought a 20" folding e-bike during lockdown 1 🇬🇧 to save from going mad. It's been a marvel, takes me anywhere I want to go, we're in the countryside here and it's been a delight. Those days when it was too cold and damp even with longjohns, I used for resting so I was strong enough to sit and get the pedals turning next time. I modded it... 😁trying to find a comfy saddle, finally saw one for private sale with a little back rest which changed my ride completely, stopped me slipping off the saddle. My wife was given an M&S Christmas hamper so I pinched that to put on my rack, now I can do a bit of shopping and feel useful again.
    There you go, thanks to all you CZcamsrs, especially a chap with MS I found who used his as a mobility aid, I now call mine my Stealth Mobility Vehicle and fold it up to go in the car on rare holidays... Well just the once so far, it is super heavy even for the two of us with it in its bag! 😂
    Thanks for the sunshine chaps. 👍 🙏🌈

    L.A. native and former bike commuter, partly on that path. Ok to bash L.A.’s lousy bike infrastructure, they can do SO much better but choose not to. I stopped commuting due to a few too many close calls and now work from home. Walked the bike a lot when commuting due to treacherous conditions. Loved that free feeling, even though it took a little longer. Once I got home I found I did not “need a minute” to detox from the work day and horrendous commute before relaxing with the family. We need that Portland bike-friendly vibe.😎

I live in the southeastern part of Los Angeles county and I've been riding in these parts that could use drastic improvement. It is good to see the land around the "LA River" being put to good use instead of posting 'No Trespassing' signs. I thought the guy in the background at 14:44 was fishing, which would be really odd as that is not a real river. Upon a closer look he must be checking his phone for his Riese & Müller Load 75 order at Propel. I will stay in Florida as there are many nice multi-use trails I have yet to explore.

    I remember cycling from Fullerton into central Los Angeles back in the '60s (not long after the Watts riots - and yes, I cycled through Watts LOL). There was certainly *NO* cycling infrastructure then...and very few cyclists. I attended a junior college with about 5000 students and on a good day, there might be half a dozen cycles in the racks. I would definitely have panicked with the bees!

There’s a great company in Exmouth, England, called FreeTrike Rehab Cycling who tech up bikes for anyone with mobility issues. They have many customers, including ex military, youngsters, retired, anyone really. We now have enough people riding recumbents to argue for improvements on the existing infrastructure, especially narrow access. If you’re ever in the U.K. come visit them 😁

    I feel like the carcentric society is just ignorant about alternative transportation because that is all they know. There are a lot of people that make their living off of cars. Some of the jobs that make a living off of cars are people in road construction, car manufacturers, auto insurers, ambulance services, lawyers, auto dealerships, fast food, big box stores, oil companies and even military which has to fight wars over oil. Even our doctors make more money due to health effects associated with less exercise . Psychiatrist even get more clients because people aren’t getting out in fresh air and moving around. People build oil rigs and need helicopters to bring them out there and radio companies to provide communication. Think of all the companies that build fenders, alternators, tires. I can go on and on. I parked my bicycle at Home Depot today and thought that what if everybody was like me. They would not need a parking lot at all much less one the size of a football field. A minimalistic lifestyle may bring us closer together, cause us to be happier and more healthy and end war. Who knows. I saw a lot of mayhem, death and destruction as an automobile adjuster and I am still seeing it on the television screen as wars rage over oil so we can keep this lifestyle. Did I mention global warming.

    Non of the bike lanes are connected there are no clear signs like this is a bike lane, bikes should get priority above cars. You should have wider bike lanes saver intersections, lower speeds within the city and more definitaly more space between bikes and cars. Now I am not an expert but i believe that making these kind of changes wil definitaly help improve bike infrastructure and wil also stimulate more people to bike. 😶

    Google maps has a bicycle mode.. And Garmin edge maps (that are supposed to be geared for cyclist) are not.. I have had garmin edge cycling GPS tell me to get on a freeway, (I-5) where it is illegal for cyclist to travel.. Garmin does not care.. and Garmin hasn't updated their cycling maps in 15 years.. In Portland, Or, there is a bike only trail called the SpringWater trail.. every time i get to the trail and start, the Garmin Edge with the latest maps, tells me, "make a uturn" it thinks i'm off the road..
    Funny how Garmin and Google maps say they are for Green (GND) and yet they are not at all focused on bicycle commuting. Garmin only wants to make that $600 sale on a new Garmin Edge 1030.. They don't care that the maps are completely out of date and direct cyclist on dangerous routes.. Don't waste your money on a Garmin Edge.. if you have a phone that can be put in cycling/walk mode, use that instead.. it is more accurate and it won't tell a person walking or cycling to get on the freeway where it is illegal to be..

    • @rdkuless
      @rdkuless Před 2 lety

      Komoot app is a better way to plan your cycling route.. it is $19 for access. Then the route can be downloaded to your phone and bluetoothed to your GPS so your not using data on the phone. Komoot is very user friendly. but not perfect..
