I did some light tandem racing in my younger years and want to put some input on the pedal position. While at take off you need to to both be on power stroke at same time , this creates a lot of torque steer issues. After the first start the captain should continue and the rear should hesitate a stroke. In other words you want one rider to be on left leg power when the other rider is on right leg power. This negates the side to side torquing and puts all energy into straight ahead motion (less energy loss). This makes the captains steering and safety much better as he or she will not need to fight the controls.
Then the most critical for team effort , the captain must not be flatulent 😒 .

My wife and I have had a tandem for over 20 years, if you like spending time with your wife, then they are great fun. Brad indicated that the bumps are worse for the stoker, which is true as the captain's saddle is half way between the two wheels. Going over an object the captain feels two bumps (one for each wheel), with the mechanical leverage each bump is halved, the stoker saddle is near vertically over the back wheel, so they hardly feel the front wheel, bump but get ALL of the back wheel bump. However the most significant factor is that the stoker can't see the bumps in the road, each one is a surprise, and they can't brace or lift in anticipation, if I don't give a warning I'm in trouble. As the captain I give a commentary on what I am doing, e.g changing gear (which requires lessening the pressure on the pedals), count down to pulling away, stopping (my stoker initially keeps her feet on the pedals when we stop), and turning (at which time I ask for the appropriate turn signal, so that I can keep my hands on the handlebars).

The stoker gets on after the captain is already on and keeps the tandem steady for the stoker (wide leg stance and sitting on top tube) with brakes applied. Stoker gets on, gets comfortable, and clips in (if that is an option). Stoker backpedals to move one pedal forward as directed by captain. Captain gets one foot on forward pedal and off you go on command. Captain clips in when you are moving and are ready. To briefly stop, say at a red light, captain holds the tandem steady and stoker remains clipped in (or feet on pedals). No reason for stoker to put feet on ground. To completely stop, captain holds tandem steady and stoker gets off. Then the captain. There are videos about this.

5:49 Those aren't clips. They are, in fact, called Clipless pedals because they do not use a cage over your toe (the clip). These can properly be called cleated pedals or just clipless - a rider will mount cleats on the bottom of their shoes and walk funny wherever they go.

Captain to stoker communication is key as far as road hazards and shifts etc.
