    This is an actual repair video of the problematic 2000-2003 Volvo dash. This is not my first attempt, I have repaired over 100 units with the same technology. There can be other faults but according to my experience, this usually solves all the problems. You do need to have experience in soldering SMD components.
    If your soldering looks nice and clean then it doesn't always mean it works but if it looks ugly it most likely won't work.

      This is really great thanks for sharing it! Mine is an ‘06 and was debating soldering iron vs hot air.
      I’ve successfully reflowed small SMD parts w/soldering iron.
      I see you used liquid flux, and which solder do you recommend (lead? Lead free?), wondering if a certain type is better to last longer at higher automotive temps?
      For the larger chips - Do you add solder when you reflow, or just flux and tin your iron tip?

      @@zzzATLzzz If yours is '06 it's not going to look like in the video. You would have to remove the gauge needles to pull it apart and do some fault tracing there. Does it fully die or does some funny stuff? I usually use lead based solder but nothing specific. I do all the chips with the iron.

    It’s great to watch this video on CZcams. Thank you so much for sharing. My 2016 XC90 has something wrong with the DIM. The dashboard shows “driver support system function reduced.” The Volvo service center quoted me $2,565.54 for the DIM replacement. Is that a reasonable price? I just don’t trust them anymore. Hi, a very helpful and informative video. On our 2005 XC70 DIM the fuel gauge needle stays at about a quarter full position regardless of whether the engine is on or off i.e. appears to be stuck. Is this a possible fault with the instrument in the DIM or does the fault lie elsewhere? I.e. the sender unit in the tank? Thanks.

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! If it stays there all the time it's most likely the DIM. If it looks different to the one in the video (newer) then this video will not help you much. On the newer ones it's bit more complicated to pull them apart and put back together and PCB is also different.

    You forgot to mention, car battery DISCONNECTED. By all means, don't touch the resistors or the chips with a soldering iron - I've tried and destroyed my DIM. You need a heating gun as shown in the video. That said, my DIM also had several RA6 small resistors going bad which needed replacing (just heating/resolder them will only help for a while), so it's not only the chip connections that go bad. I had mine done by a TV shop who checked the entire board. Also check the resistors near the High beams indicator bulb, also go bad. You can also swap the DIM with same year and same 4 side numbers in the column (the 5th number doesn't matter)

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for the comment. You don´t have to disconnect the battery but you can if you wish. I have done 100+ DIM-s with soldering iron and I have never destroyed any of them. I do see lot of them destroyed by really poor soldering skills. I am not telling that the areas soldered in this video will fix it 100% of the time but I rarely have to touch anything else (unless it has been "fixed" before).

Are your worries regards to manipulated mileage? Because you don't need to physically change anything to change the mileage, it's just saved in one of the chips and is accessible by OBD port. If it has been changed you will usually have a fault code which can be read out with VIDA or similar.
