- Jimmy Carter was the last Democrat to win the South, given that he had served as Governor of Georgia. Most of the major events during his presidency were centered on foreign affairs, specifically the Middle East. Some went well, some not so well. What were these events and how did he handle them? What has he done since his term? An incredible amount actually, probably more than any other president. So let's learn a bit more about Jimmy Carter.

The Carter Administration was really influential over here, Argentina, during our last (and by far the most brutal and violent) militar dictatorship, mainly by the efforts of Patricia Derian denouncing human rights violations. It represented a shift in US policy, which used to view South American dictatorships as allies against communism during the Cold War.
Carter is a good guy.
pretty sure that was the Nixon administration.
@@GiordanDiodato Nixon was the one who put Videla and Pinochet in power
Carter was dealt a terrible hand during his term, and honestly that most likely plays a massive part in why his presidency isn’t as fondly remembered. A nearly uncontrollable onslaught of both international and internal crisises plagued him. He was one of those president who came into office at a very bad time.
This video is about to get a lot more views with Jimmy getting hospice. He’s such a curious president, and I think that largely reflects the 70s as a whole after Nixon.
5 months later he’s still here! He’s a pretty tough guy.
Happy 99th birthday President Carter!!
Surprised there was no mention of the Panama Canal treaty. I'm from the former Canal Zone and that treaty made him insanely unpopular with my fellow Zonians. I personally understand that it had to happen, but most people were against it. That was considered another foreign policy blunder for him.
That's one of the first things I think of when Carter comes up.
compared to Reagan basically going full force against a nation that could nuke us, which would you choose?
Lmao Jimmy Carter was on a plane I took and took 45 min to shake everyone's hand
And it wasn't because he was running for some office. He's long past that now. He's just a very genuine people-person.

I agree
I was 9 when the Iranians took the US embassy staff hostage. I have since 2000 or so changed my mind on Carter. I think him sending the rescue mission was probably the call that took the most guts any President has had to take.
The failed rescue mission? 450 days in? That he created. Um ok
@Dow John
I agree with you
I don’t know how anyone could say he handled the hostage situation well.
I’m 35 so Carter was before my time but I’m a history buff and I’ve read and watched everything I could on the Iran hostages of the US EMBASSY & he did a very poor job.
It’s amazing that he was The President when that went down and was campaigning to get re-elected while Americans were held hostage.
I don’t see how he could have focused on anything besides bringing those Americans home.
There was a reason he only served one term and a big reason for the Reagan Revolution was people got to see how bad a left leaning President policy’s effect the entire nation.
Carter comes off as a nice guy with a big heart with compassionate ideas but that doesn’t equal a great leader and it definitely didn’t translate well in real life with his policies.
After just 4 years of Carter & his bleeding heart America had a Republican in the White House for 12 years (3 terms Reagan & Bush)until they were ready to give a Democrat another shot at leading.
Carter’s bad policies effect America to this day.

Carter was a decent president but he was just weak. Pretty much why he lost in 1980. But with all the community service Carter did after his presidency, he definitely cleaned up his image and his presidency looks better decades later. I think it was Carter was president at a wrong time.
Just my take on it. Great video thank you.
I'm from the UK so my knowledge of him is relegated to Simpsons references quite frankly. He'd always been made out to be an incompetent dope but he seems like one of the few truly good men to be president
you know, I think I agree on him being President at the worst time. If it was during the 90s, he'd probably be a good President.
Didn't help that a lot of shit happened in his last two years in office. USSR invading Afghanistan, Iran revolution, Iran hostage crisis, TMI, and the oil embargo he was forced to sign.
He was president when I was born. That’s why I’m here to check out what kind of president he was because I don’t remember or know a thing about him.

This! 👍
I cant think of a single person who was such a great person, so loveable, yet such a mediocre leader. If he had more of a backbone and been a bit more patient by staggering his reforms out across 2 administrations he could have been one of the best presidents of the last 100 years, but he was a bit too gullible, indecisive, and self righteous. He was a great person but politically he was like an American Chamberlain, a classic appeaser.
Doing things like supporting the Shah publically yet doing next to nothing to actually support him was enough to weaken the Shah and sour his opponents (like the ayatollah) against the US without actually doing anything to help the Shah. It was a classic example of why it's best not to do half measures.
If Carter and Reagan had teamed up with Carter as the VP I honestly believe it would have been the best presidency since FDR. He was a great diplomat and ambassador, and had an excellent moral compass and endless compassion. Coupled with Reagans decisiveness, pragmatism, and political power it would have been a match made in heaven. Reagan could reign in Carters pie in the sky optimism while Carter could counter balance Reagan's more morally bankrupt acts like the Iran Contra affair
Carter and LBJ. That would truly be a match made in heaven.
I also forgot to add that Reagan used to be a Democratic of the old FDR mold.
WOW...mediocre is such high praise for Carter.....

im currently researching about jimmy carter with his successes and failures and this video excited me because it looked helpful, but i was disappointed because the video gave us all these events that happened under his administration but gives the viewers no context to the events, and does not explain the importance of the events at all. i am better off just using your video to see all the events and then googling them individually instead for better information.
This tutorial is specifically about Carter.
@@ProfessorDaveExplains i know this is supposed to be a video about carter but i just got confused when i watched the video instead of enlightened. for example, you discuss the 2nd oil embargo at 1:24, but do not elaborate how this might have been a failure of Carter's, or how it affected him (maybe the people blamed the inflation on carter or became unhappy with him, etc). i can list many more examples where you present an event like that and leave me confused about the significance. when explaining events in history, i think it is crucial to include even the most minute context in order for the viewer/learner to be able to fully understand. if it is a video about carter, i don't understand why the video hardly talks about him, or at least presents no useful analysis as expected from the title. i guess the main idea of what i'm saying is, WHY are these events important to his administration and how was it a success or failure?
and yes, you can tell me to go make my own video then if i know so much, but i saw that no one else brought this up in the comments. maybe i am missing something, but that is what i thought. i do not mean to be a hater or something i just mean to give you criticism in case you decide to make more videos like this for the future, and please tell me if i am misunderstanding something . furthermore, i apologize if it is unwarranted. i hope you understand

The Iranian Revolution was one of the greatest upsets of all time.
Especially for the people living within Iran. They were lured by a man who claimed he didn't want power, and then he took absolute power and created an oppressive regime that has lasted 40 years. Remember the Green Revolution attempt 10 years ago? It was bloodily crushed, sending the message to Iranians that the Ayatollah will forever be Iran's jailer and that they are all his prisoners.
@@davew6949 lmao, that so-called “green revolution” consisted of 2,000 (at the maximum) crazies who banded together that day. That was basically the scaled-down capitol riots of Iran.
@@resikin Huh, I didn't know that the Theocratic Jailers of the people of Iran invested much in misinformation abroad about the people of Iran. I suppose there is an understanding that the people of Iran will look for any chance to overthrow the Jailers and thus, the Jailers have people hired in order to try to keep chances low.
The Green Revolution was a lot larger than what you're trying to make it out to be. The event wasn't that long ago. And even if it was 30 years or so ago, people won't forget. Remember, the Chinese Communist Party has invested a lot more than the Ayatollah in misinformation about its own people and still can't make the world forget about Tiananmen Square.
@@resikin the irony is that democrats are authoritarian dictators
and it's all because we got rid of the Iranian Prime Minister in the 1950s and installed the dictator Shah. Why? Well, Iran refused to give oil to the US and UK.

@@NH-zi4jr I do agree with the idea that we need different ways of seeing things and perspectives and the like, but I think officilly switching to the metric system would have been a pragmatic decision overall, especially when so much of the world utilizes it not only in commerce, but in science as well (though to be fair, metric is the official measuring system of science to begin with)
@@NH-zi4jr Globalization is a good thing. It leads to more diversity, to more ideas and more achievements. By democratically elected Government you mean the time when Qajar dynasty ruled over Iran? People lived in filth and suffered from many diseases back then and women were not considered as individuals.
I believe you have mistaken Shah's father for him Because Shah's father was responsible for the coup.
His father (Reza Shah) who was the leader of the coup was actually the one who brought civilization to Iran by building so many institutions, facilities and eliminating the religious disastrous beliefs which consisted of not letting Shia Mullahs have a power in making any kind of decision and removing hijab for women which later lead to women enfranchisement.
