  • Jimmy Carter was the last Democrat to win the South, given that he had served as Governor of Georgia. Most of the major events during his presidency were centered on foreign affairs, specifically the Middle East. Some went well, some not so well. What were these events and how did he handle them? What has he done since his term? An incredible amount actually, probably more than any other president. So let's learn a bit more about Jimmy Carter.

The Carter Administration was really influential over here, Argentina, during our last (and by far the most brutal and violent) militar dictatorship, mainly by the efforts of Patricia Derian denouncing human rights violations. It represented a shift in US policy, which used to view South American dictatorships as allies against communism during the Cold War.

Carter was dealt a terrible hand during his term, and honestly that most likely plays a massive part in why his presidency isn’t as fondly remembered. A nearly uncontrollable onslaught of both international and internal crisises plagued him. He was one of those president who came into office at a very bad time.

Surprised there was no mention of the Panama Canal treaty. I'm from the former Canal Zone and that treaty made him insanely unpopular with my fellow Zonians. I don’t know how anyone could say he handled the hostage situation well.
I’m 35 so Carter was before my time but I’m a history buff and I’ve read and watched everything I could on the Iran hostages of the US EMBASSY & he did a very poor job.
It’s amazing that he was The President when that went down and was campaigning to get re-elected while Americans were held hostage.
I don’t see how he could have focused on anything besides bringing those Americans home.
There was a reason he only served one term and a big reason for the Reagan Revolution was people got to see how bad a left leaning President policy’s effect the entire nation.
Carter comes off as a nice guy with a big heart with compassionate ideas but that doesn’t equal a great leader and it definitely didn’t translate well in real life with his policies.
After just 4 years of Carter & his bleeding heart America had a Republican in the White House for 12 years (3 terms Reagan & Bush)until they were ready to give a Democrat another shot at leading.
Carter’s bad policies effect America to this day.

I cant think of a single person who was such a great person, so loveable, yet such a mediocre leader. If he had more of a backbone and been a bit more patient by staggering his reforms out across 2 administrations he could have been one of the best presidents of the last 100 years, but he was a bit too gullible, indecisive, and self righteous. He was a great person but politically he was like an American Chamberlain, a classic appeaser.
Doing things like supporting the Shah publically yet doing next to nothing to actually support him was enough to weaken the Shah and sour his opponents (like the ayatollah) against the US without actually doing anything to help the Shah. It was a classic example of why it's best not to do half measures.
If Carter and Reagan had teamed up with Carter as the VP I honestly believe it would have been the best presidency since FDR. He was a great diplomat and ambassador, and had an excellent moral compass and endless compassion. Coupled with Reagans decisiveness, pragmatism, and political power it would have been a match made in heaven. Reagan could reign in Carters pie in the sky optimism while Carter could counter balance Reagan's more morally bankrupt acts like the Iran Contra affair

I believe you have mistaken Shah's father for him Because Shah's father was responsible for the coup.
His father (Reza Shah) who was the leader of the coup was actually the one who brought civilization to Iran by building so many institutions, facilities and eliminating the religious disastrous beliefs which consisted of not letting Shia Mullahs have a power in making any kind of decision and removing hijab for women which later lead to women enfranchisement.
