  • "Discovering Freemasonry" is an 8-part series presented by Rubicon Masonic Society which is an invitation only private group of Master Mason Freemasons located in Lexington, KY. The purpose of Rubicon Masonic Society is to establish a deeper understanding and connection with Freemasonry, its traditions and practices, and further cementing the brotherhood of its members and guests through conviviality and unity outside of the lodge.
Brothers within Rubicon have worked diligently in order to provide attendees and viewers with a factual overview and introduction to the philosophy and principles of Freemasonry.
This is a not an educational program to detract from the initiatory experience nor to reveal passwords, grips, steps, or any part or parts of masonic ritual that is considered sacred or private.
Upon our studies and surveys in and outside of Rubicon, we have consistently learned that new and even veteran Masons were never provided an explanation of the fundamentals that can be delivered in a basic overview such as this…hence the birth of this series.
This video is Episode 3, which discusses:
    The Entered Apprentice Degree
    Presenters within this Episode include:
Brother Don Combs, Member of Rubicon Masonic Society (KY)
WB Brian Evans, Chairman of Rubicon Masonic Society (KY)
WB Michael Poll, Best Selling Masonic Author (LA)
The outline of all videos to be recorded in this series between 9/14/20 through 12/28/20 are as follows:
    Episode 1: What is Freemasonry
Episode 2: The Path to becoming a Freemason
Episode 3: The Entered Apprentice Degree
Episode 4: The Fellow Craft Degree
Episode 5: The Master Mason Degree
Episode 6: The Legend of Hiram Abiff
Episode 7: Living as a Freemason
Episode 8: The Commitments of a Freemason
Please understand that In the period of time allotted within these episodes, it will be impossible for us to conduct anything other than an overview of each topic.
We encourage you to remember and not to assume that all men enrolled in this series are at the same level of Masonic instruction, and some may not be Masons at all. While some participants will undoubtedly desire a more in-depth discussion, others will be encountering some, or all of this information for the first time. Those who desire more information to what is presented within this series may be directed to specific books, papers, and websites that will assist the pursuit of quality academic and Masonic knowledge.
    Purpose:
The purpose of this educational series is to deliver a factual and foundational overview of the world's most ancient and honorable Fraternity, beginning with a man's initial contacts within the Fraternity, the man's progression through masonic degrees, and the life path of the man as a Freemason in his daily pursuit for self-improvement by applying the lessons and the tools of the craft in his life.
    Disclaimer:
There is a tremendous amount of misinformation about Freemasonry that currently exists in both virtual and non-virtual forums. Only factual information capable of being independently verified and consistent with the accepted academic research standards will be presented in this series. While the information presented during this series will be factual, any opinions expressed during the various presentations will be those of the presenter and do not necessarily reflect the views of any Lodge or Grand Lodge or The Rubicon Masonic Society. All material contained in this presentation is suitable for Masons and non-Masons. No private information, including, but not limited to, passwords, signs, grips, or other elements of Masonic ceremonies will be disclosed during any part of this virtual meeting. Fascinating presentations. I was totally ignorant about Freemasonry until 5-6 months ago. Since I watched a first video I have been totally absorbed into that. Have bought some books, printed texts from the internet. More I read, more I want to read. More I learn, more I want to learn. I believe deep in my heart that Masonry is what I want to be part of and want it to be part of me.

ill give a second comment. You brothers are discussing your concern that a man giving his proficiency through memorization is possibly
allowing a man of poor moral character or maybe a men that has not Received our message before they enter through our porch based on just memorization, well I am pleased to see a man that took the time to learn the work! In Ohio a man can do a day class at the local college and become a Master Mason in less than eight hours! now you tell me how a man has prove his moral compass in eight hours

@josh staley I am 57 years old and have long wanted to become a Mason, but have not for several reasons, not the least of which is due to a brain injury; MC accident and spinal surgery that went badly. I have terrible recall issues and public speaking mortifies me because I don't speak well. Being on the opposite side of your comment above, memorization is very difficult for me, and as I understand it, there is a good bit of both in earning the degrees.
All that said, I am a man of faith. I am a man of integrity, and honor, and I desire deeply to surround myself with honorable men and to be a part of something larger than myself.
I read your comment at the top of the stack, and felt that you might be willing to give me your thoughts on my situation.
FWIW, I have approached a coworker, who is a Mason. Unfortunately, they are entering the off season until September. But I am willing to wait, if this is something that I am able to do.
      Thank you in advance.

Suitable proficiency .... often we socialize together within and around the lodge meaning we do get to know each other. So real proficiency can be seen in time.
But the term, Suitable, is for the moment. But isn't proficiency morality, secrecy (respecting each other's privacy), brotherly love/charity -- all that is to say, evolving into a saint!
To answer the question of how do we judge for the moment.
    1) do we judge one's ability to memorize?
    2) do we judge one's character (morality)?
    3) do we judge one's intellect?
    4) do we judge one's self knowledge?
    5) do we judge how one treats others?

I agree with the Brother at 1:19:00 saying we should raise the bar, and perhaps require an oral or written presentation to have them abstractualize the lessons learned from the degrees in their own words. Much like academia today, most people have a great capacity to retain what they are told, but are weak inoriginal thought and critical thinking
