My late uncle was a manager at Eastleigh ,he told me that the rebulit west countrys etc' were due to be withdrawn in the early 80's !!!! ,some of the 9f's less than 5 years in service what a scandal

I have often wondered that the real reason for steams demise so quickly was not concerned with the locos themselves but was the governments wish to reduce the labor force within British Railways either way locos that were barely run in were scrapped unnecessarily
Travel on rail was far cheaper in the sixties. Yes the railways were losing money hand over fist. That was the fault of govt, and bad management. Not steam, and the footplate,and railway crews.

If I remember correctly some of the BR Standard locomotives were supposed to be withdrawn in the 80s
