Now that I've been able to see an undistorted version of this Q&A on CZcams (it was appearing glitchy when I saw it on Facebook), this was a great talk on the issues facing western monarch butterflies and other pollinators. Many thanks to Sarina Jespen and Senator Jeff Merkley for taking time out of their schedules to provide insight on the plight of pollinators, as well as to Curator Bob Lee for hosting this discussion. The statistics on the declines of pollinators are quite staggering; so many people, plants and animals depend on pollinators for food and other necessities, and these drastic drops in numbers are quite alarming. I support the Oregon Zoo's efforts to recover the Taylor's checkerspot and Oregon silverspot butterflies, and I support the efforts of the Xerces Society and the efforts of the elected officials who are seeking to help pollinators. I'll be looking into more solutions to help pollinators, including acquiring organic, pesticide-free produce, making some non-toxic cleaners, and more actions this spring.
I'll also look into the Monarch Act and I hope it will get passed by the government. I'm not too optimistic about its chances though (screw the filibuster).

3 18 21 Hey Austin, Suggestion: plant milkweed; common milkweed, swamp milkweed, & butterflyweed seem to be the best. Their eggs are laid on the plant. Stay safe, keep calm, & be well. v

@@virginiatyree6705 I was listing some butterfly-helping options I've seen on the Oregon Zoo's Small Actions guide. I don't know where to get ahold of milkweed and I'm already familiar with the reproductive cycle of the monarch butterfly. There are some other actions I plan to do this spring to help pollinators. I'll look into potential milkweed sources if that'll help.

3 18 21 Hey again @@AustinSPTD1996, I checked online-Esty-$3.99. I would imagine local nurseries in the Portland area my be able to make some suggestions. Years ago, I visited Pacific Grove, CA. I was amazed!!! There were so many butterflies & no people! They would land on you, take a look, & fly off... They had curiosity, no fear. It was so memorable. v

I'm so glad I found your video in my feed. I used to be an Oregonian many years ago. I lived in Newport. My adult son calls Portland his home.
Anyway, in a Floridian now. I've been raising and releasing monarchs for years. We have our own problems here, not mentioned in the video. I'm sooooo happy, actually elated!, To see you doing so much for them. I've been working with a man who runs a biology department up North. I would love to see you two collaborate. I won't put his name here in this space, but do contact me thru instagram and I will get back to you. I'm not on FB for personal reasons. Thank you all for everything you are doing to save the Monarch's. They deserve our protections.
A few years ago I wrote an article on pollinators after reading about somewhere in Oregon,(I think it was Salem but not sure), about how the State or City was using weed kill that killed anything that flys!! I was horrified!! I was not just thinking of the Monarch's but all the pollinators who give life to us humans by providing us food! And what do humans do in return?? They try and kill them!! Yes, a nightmare. Anyway, I hope to hear from you, if not, I'm going to carry on with trying to save and birth as many as I can for as long as I have breath. Thank you to the 3 of you who are doing the hard work. 💜🦋💜🦋💜🦋💜🦋💜🦋💜🦋

We really need to make this a nationwide PSA. Not just for monarchs but all of our native pollinators as well as monarchs.

Programs regarding this topic should be reached in the school system through online programs so children can also participate. Due to covid a lot of on-site informative programs (like public libraries) have been cancelled. But online programs would be good. Thank you.

I Love Butterflies. My daughter and I visited the world heritage site in Mexico to see the monarch butterflies and it was breathe taking.
I hope with the 3 trillion dollar plan issues money that will work with Farmers to plant milkweed organic in addition to their products to help increase the numbers of the population of these tiny necessary neighbors we need.

If you think that you can't make a difference, you're wrong. First, stop using all pesticides. Three years ago I started planting a milkweed indigenous to my area and this past summer, I saw monarch butterflies in my yard every day. I've seen them lay their eggs and then watched as the caterpillars feed on the plants. Milkweed also sprouts new plants vigorously so it's easy to share new plants with your friends and neighbors. It's been wonderful to see the butterflies that I used to see all the time when I was a child, only to almost completely disappear.

I watched to hear about the monarchs, but was quickly annoyed by the partisan mud slinging! Hopefully this administration will take on the pesticide issue but I doubt it since its a big business, and they're not doing what's in the best interest of American people let alone butterflies! Maybe they could teach about this in schools instead of teaching kindergarteners about LGBT sexual orientation or critical race theory!
