- Seriously, what was wrong with the title Area 88? Why U.N.? What was next on the list, NATO? The Eau Claire Neighborhood Protection Program?

Did you really just say the music isn't the greatest? The soundtrack to this game is arguably one of the best for SNES.
+C Schank
"Anger"?
There were absolutely no signs whatsoever of even a hint of anger in Emperor Palpatine's comment.
Laurelindo so his Star Wars joke completely flew over your head..
I agree I thought the music was pretty good
This soundtrack is amazing! Totally reminds me of my childhood!
my thoughts exactly!
The music isn't the greatest? You deaf? It's epic!!! I keep listening to the OST and remixes till this very day. My favorite is the Battleship Minks theme.
Andy this is a great opinion. Battleship Minks still ends up in my CZcams playlists.
I was jus heading to the comments to say "minks battleship"
I loved playing this game and still do occasionally! I have to disagree with one thing though. I loved the music! I thought it enhanced the game even more. That's just my opinion
Thanks for stopping by!
Good video!
Though in my humble opinion, the soundtrack here rocks! Anime style. Rocky and kinda dramatic.
"Whats wrong with Area 88 title?"
As far as i heard its was something due to copyrights and, ofc, they decided that anime title will not attract any interest in US. But i think copyright issues was primal.
I also imagine someone in the meetings was convinced that people would confuse (or associate) "Area 88" with "Area 51" and think it was supposed to be about aliens rather than contemporary war planes.
What!?!? How do you not like the music!?!? It's the best part!
I was #2 in the wr dept. for this game and still love it. The Submarine level on expert is insane and takes a minute to get a rhythm for. This game will always be special to me because i went from barely being able to beat the 3rd level to grinding it out and beating it on expert after i thinking that was an impossible feat. One love SNES drunk!
One of my favorite soundtracks is from this game. Considering the one who composed it, the quality did not surprise me.
No slowdown? Are we playing the same game here?
Ha, even in the video you can see the slowdowns. Nevertheless, the game is great.
If it didn't slow down you couldn't play it
@@daviswhite3591 Yeah this is a rare instance where the slow downs can save you from being obliterated. So many tight areas you need to squeeze thru on this game.
@@colirino against the carrier, lol.
The stage select music is Chocolate Rain.
"Some will fly while others crash the plane"
''The music isn't the greatest'' ? It is literally the greatest I have ever heard in any video game.
All of the tracks are great, unlike most games which usually have one or two that stand out.
Good thing the rest of your comments were on point so you barely dodged the fury of my dislike :)
Dude seriously this music awesome!
was about to say that. I make my living doing music, and damn one of the greatest on any console on any genre
I've had the music to this game stuck in my head since I bought it in the 90s when it came out. Epic game, I'll never stop playing it.
Music isn't the greatest??!!! Are you drunk!!??
Edwin Rivas it IS in his name lol!
Yeah.....SNES DRUNK!!
He's right.. I just watched the longplay, 90% of the music is awful and doesn't suit the game as all. "Serviceable" was being generous.
Loved the music. Classic Capcom. Especially stage select music.
@@teddym2808 I've been listening to the ost for my whole life. My favorite ost of all time
Had this one as a kid- I have a feeling my dad bought it for me BECAUSE he thought it was a flight sim. His loss was my gain! I haven't played it in adulthood, but the challenge was real as a youngster, and finally beating it after years of trying felt like a huge accomplishment. Great game.
1:09 mostly no slow downs, except for the final boss which is this huge aircraft that you have to circle around and destroy the core.
Yep. Slowdown on final boss and also on this base 0:33 when the main target pops out with all the heatseeking missiles.
This game is Timeless.. It is right up there with Turtles in Time best of their respective genres on the Snes.
I've played a LOT of shoot 'em ups, and this is one of my very favorite. IMO the music, level design, and replayability are top notch.
Just Some Guy -- check out the guitar covers by Breath Of The Sea.
@@Arizona9001 thanks!
@@Arizona9001i made a rom hack where you can play the game with breath of the sea music replacing the song track.
@@jud6ment wtfuhhhhh I need that in my life. Is there a website for how to
@@Arizona9001 i put up a preview yesterday. Download link in the description, and i have a 5 minute tutorial video how to patch the rom. And yes, the website is Zeldix
Probably the best and most consistenly awesome OST of any SNES game, along with Mega Man X and F-Zero
I absolutely agree!
"Area 88 was ported to the home console Super NES and released in Japan on July 26, 1991.[2] In North America and Europe it was re-titled U.N. Squadron. The illustration for the U.N. Squadron poster was created by well known illustrator Marc Ericksen, the illustrator of the covers to Capcom's other games Mega Man 2 and Strider. A version for the Capcom Power System Changer was planned and previewed but never released."
I discovered this game two days ago, and I managed to beat two stages on Gamer but then I realised that it was probably too hard for me at that moment. xD
I changed to Easy, and I beat the whole game on that difficulty today.
Now I am going to change to Normal, and work my way up. ^^
Have you made it up to Gamer again? Its the only difficulty I cannot beat.
@@kyle95smile79
Yeah, I just barely managed to beat Gamer about a year ago or so, and it was definitely a huge challenge.
It seems as if you are pretty much required to get a fully equipped Efreet for the final stage, since you simply won't have enough firepower with any of the other planes to be able to realistically beat it - so I like to grind for money on the optional bonus stages until I can afford it before I even start attempting the final stage.
@@kyle95smile79
Also, the ceiling boss that has all those conveyour belts on the floor becomes much easier when you realise that only _one_ of the lines of robots can directly hurt you.
You can notice quite clearly that one of the conveyor belts is "further away", and those robots cannot touch you, except with their fire I think.
We really need this on the Switch SNES emulator.
Heck yeah this my my childhood! I’m 23 and still playing playing this!!
I'd just like to say thank you for all of your videos. I look forward to each new one you post, because it harkens back to my childhood of playing SNES games. I think it's great you not only take a look back at the classics everyone still knows and loves today (Your Chrono Trigger retrospective is a thing of beauty), but some of the more obscure games. Like this one. I always remember seeing it at Blockbuster, but I never rented it, or gave it much thought. Nonetheless, your look back at it was still really nostalgic for me, and kind of makes me want to track down a copy. Thanks for spreading the Gospel of SNES. Greatest. System. Ever!
Thanks for such kind words! And thanks for watching, I really appreciate it
*****
I'd like to echo those sentiments.
I owned this game back in the day!!! Was so awesome! The only thing I absolutely can't remember is how I ended up getting it! This is one of the most owns for the SNES!
This game was an arcade favorite growing up. it was awesome to see it ported over to a home system.
My two favorite SNES games of all time are UN Squadron and Final Fight. Both Capcom titles. Both still very great replay value, but UN Squadron is still an incredible challenge! Final Fight is pretty easy to beat.
This one and Biohazard Battle were my two absolute favorites.
One of my favourites shooters for the SNES. Ones of my favourite shooters for the Mega Drive was Hellfire.
Love your reviews
Thanks man
I used to play this Game a Lot when I was 16!! Good memories
U.N. sqaudern is also an arcade and anime series as well
I've seen the ova. The second one was genuienly emotional with great music. I played this game too. I played it randomly not knowing it was connected to the ova and didn't make the connection right away.
Love this game. One of the easiest hard games ever if that makes sense. Contra with jets. Super sweet sounds, gameplay, & even some of the prettiest backgrounds on SNES. Tons of fun.
My fav game, very well put on the details.
Oh crap! My brother told me to rent this game but I never did. If I actually LOOKED I would’ve seen it was a shoot em up. Damn, I missed out.
Chris Lowee honestly don't remember how we got this game but I loved it, even tho I was a kid and never made it past a few levels til I was older haha
Big loss. Best snes game ever
Area 88's anime is top notch, and it definitely helps immerse you further into the characters back stories.
Honestly I love the SNES slow down in games like this, because it makes the game easier.
lol If you want to cheat to make it easier, why even play? Easiest of all!!
The fact you can't simply let your finger pressed on the shooting button is the biggest flaw and kinda ruins a little the overall enjoyment of this fab shooter
You're right it wasn't immediately appealing to me when I was a kid. I think the only reason I rented it was because there weren't any other titles I wanted to play that I hadn't already played at my video rental store. I actually remember renting a few different times throughout a few months because I enjoyed it so much. I eventually found a copy at a garage sale. Definitely a good game for a good system!
The music in the desert level rocks 😜
While not a SNES game, Carrier Airwing feels like a sequel in everything but name
Please consider reviewing Out of Bounds Golf Daisuki. It's an obscure, arcane title that was only released on the Stellaview for the SFC, but it's a great little game.
I have always ignored this thinking it was a flight simulator as well. Game looks rad. I will definitely check it out. I still have my SNES from when I was a teenager. I have and still only play SNES when I am listening to music. So when video game soundtracks are brought up, it never affects me. I will definitely check this game out if I see it. Thanks for your content
One of the best SNES games I've ever had.
Damn. Wish I would've known about this game 6 years ago, when you posted this. The price is now between $18 and $40 now. Eesh. Oh well. Great video either way!
I bought this game based on this review. And I’ve got to agree, UN Squadron is worthy of playing for anyone.
I’ve really only played one or two shoot-‘em-ups extensively, so this game is really hard for me. But overall, it’s more fun than frustrating.
Music is awesome bro, it's why I got the cartridge I love it
It's so good. Just started playing it and I like it.
I do really like this game. I'm bad at it, but I do like it :).
Also, I like the music. The thing I don't like is the 'Getting hit in quick succession equals death'. I wish the health bar just kept going down even if I was hit twice quickly.
Overall though, it is probably one of my favorite shooters
Super Nintendo restoration Tysy Tube restoration Channel brought me here
I had this game when I was 9 it was so hard. I want to play it now.
Yeahhhhh, sorry man, but I'm with practically every single other comment here... are you drunk? :D U.N Squadron's music is fantastic and amongst the very best SNES soundtracks :D
Don't be sorry
Cracking game on the snes.lots of extras over the arcade game to give it a bit more substance , still enjoy today
Thanks
One of the best games on the SNES and one of my favorite games.
what is the game at 4 seconds into the video?
Lol, besides the game being absolutely awesome, the music Is one of thes many things I loved most.
Word.. It's the best. Dude is kind of a crap game reviewer with no taste in music
Was this one of the first use of regenerative health??
So when I play, I hold down the X button, and after like 8 shots it just stops. Is this the way the game works for everyone? If so, that's extremely annoying! I tried mashing or turbo, but it doesn't make the shots fire in a constant interval and it makes it hard to control.
I love this game. Especially getting the best ship and all the awesome weapons 😎
I'm 6 years to late, but the reason for the changed title is that in europe the NUMBER in the original title is "problematic" - just google it.
My fav SNES game!
Do you know where is hidden the secret life? Its icon is the Pilot's helmet
This or Axelay? I am going to grab one this month which would you recommend?
Personally I like Axelay more
@@SNESdrunk Cheers dude, I'll go with that then as your reviews are my usual go-to for SNES games I've never played, although I do like Super R-TYPE which is about all I've seen you say you we're not overly keen on, I managed to beat it but I am with you in that it is needlessly brutal with it's difficulty, what is your favourite shooter on the system?
The title 'UN Squadron is certainly one of the most bizarre marketing decisions in terms of 4th gen systems
I always assumed it was re-named to UN Squadron because of some sort of licensing issue with Area 88. The manga had been translated by the time this game came out, so there was a small audience for an Area 88 game. But given all that changed was the *name*, I don't know.
The reason it was called Area 88 is because there was an anime OVA in 1986 of the same name.
I remember playing the shit out of this game when I was a kid. Classic, through at times it felt short, and kind of hard for a kid.
I find it amusing that this damage system is essentially identical to what Halo would use years later.
This game was good but extremely difficult, it requires a lot of patience and practice to get far in this, though it's worth playing if you want a intense challenge.
Did you try the hidden difficulty setting? From what I remember you need a controller plugged in the second slot to get it... or just tap multiple times to the right, memory's getting hazy here.
Beating that game in hidden difficulty setting without hitting the continue screen was glorious :p
The music was fuckn epic
For me its the best shotemup of 16 bit era.
Wish I got this back in 2014
This was hard AF when I was a kid. I couldnt pass the 2nd level neither the wolf pack. Ive beaten the whole game several times now.
This has always been my favorite SNES game. The only other game I have that I play more is marvel versus Capcom 2
My favourite Shootem up
This game has had me throw my controller more times than most
Serviceable, lol. Definitely drunk.
Madness this game had outstanding music🤷♂️
What UNS has some of the best in game music of all time
much better than the arcade, but I did wish they had a 2 player ability
If you are not playing on Gamer difficulty are you really even playing this game?
Love the music for this!
So this is better then gradius 3?
Dude, wtf on the music comment. This is my childhood fav. LOL THIS GUY 🤔
My dad bought me this thinking it was a flight simulator.
My elation was only offset by his supreme disappointment.
........... he could've returned it.
BUT HE WAS AWESOME.
I want this on Nintendo Online!!!
License makes it difficult
This game is just difficult enough to have to force the player to get better to progress in the game. Which oddly, is what I want, and don’t want at the same time.
I had space mega force mint condition and sold it for $160 usd
Ironically, the original Area 88 was about the psychological effects of war and how it scars the human psyche. Not exactly the kind of source material I'd turn to if I was making a gung-ho shoot-em'-up video game.
The music isn’t the greatest he sAid. Wow
Imagine a remake of this game in modern days... it would totally play like Panzer Dragoon Saga. I'm not even joking, check out the anime pacing if you don't believe me!
@Emperor Palpatine & Edwin Rivas, Thank you very much. Easily top 3 best OSTs for SNES. Check out GuitarWanker90 for a great cover of forest fortress and many other golden oldies. As for this, still my childhood favorite. Gameplay, music, and replay value between difficulty/pilots/plane selection. One I have to break once a year to remember what games are about.
1:35 This is incorrect. If you die, you do lose the powerups you paid for. When you complete a level, you get refunded for the powerups you didn't use. That's the only time you "don't lose" your powerups.
Are you aware of the gamer mode? You go to options, go to the difficulty setting, hold x and a on a 2nd connected controller, and scroll past hard and voila! The hardest mode in the game is unlocked
Oh to hebin the day where this game was less than 10 dollars
You'd be lucky to find it for $30 now
Dude i cant even beat the first level uggggggggg!!!!having said that i haven't put much time into it .so of course after watching the drunk ill will conquer un squadron thank you drunk
Thanks for watching as always Marvin
I love shmups but I allways found this game unplayable it's crazy hard can't get past the 2nd level
You dare mock the music in this amazing game???? :P
Area 88 being a anime
Biggest problem with this game is no no auto fire
Besides that, awesome game
He's probably hard on the music, but I personally don't think the soundtrack oh my freaking gosh amazing like some people do.
Had to use fat greg because I suck at this game. lol Not less than 10 dollars now. Its more like 25 to 30 now. Guess retro game prices have skyrocketed.
Greg Gates is the man. I always used him as a kid.
"Hit and away is my style!" lol so funny to me now as an adult that I thought that line was so cool
