Bummed me out I didn't get to know about this game back in its prime, but was still damn happy when a buddy of mine brought it down. We played the hell out of the game and then some. Kinda cool to hear about these comics though since I didn't ever know they existed, wonder if they have em in graphic novel form where they're all collected

I remember those old Eclipse issues. Just love the technical precision with which the aircraft are illustrated. I remember for the longest time I didn't make the connection between U.N. Squadron (which I loved, and still do to this day) and the Area 88 comics.

Funny how the SNES lacks the most with the number of Shootem ups and UN Squadron is one of the best ones made. It may not be all fast paced like PC Engine and Genesis arcade type games, but holds its own in every other way.

Ok so I live in the Netherlands, and unlike north America, arcades were never that big over here, so as a kid, I never went to an arcade and we played games on consoles. So as a kid, I remember going to my grandma, where my big brother lived at the time, and he had bought a SNES. I was super excited obviously, all my friends had NES consoles, some SEGA or whatever, but we at home didn't have a console. He had one game that he bought with the SNES: U.N. Squadron. So this was the first game I really played a lot, and spend a lot of time playing. We used to play at friends' houses, Mario, Double Dragon, Duck Hunt, whatever, but this was next level shit back then. The game cost 200 gulden back then, which was extremely expensive. I absolutely loved it, played it for years, even when we started buying more games, this remained my favorite game for a while.
Years later, after not having played the SNES for a long time, and these were the Playstation/Dreamcast days already, me and a bunch of friends of mine at the time found the SNES, we hooked it up to the tv one day, they played some Mortal Kombat and what-not, smoked some joints (Netherlands, remember), and then I let them play U/N/ Squadron. So they tried, easiest difficulty setting, and I think after a while they managed to beat the second level. They said, this game is way too difficult, how do you beat this crap? So I smoked untill I was high as fuck, I said: "Reset the console, put it on highest difficulty setting, and hand me the controler!" lol
I can still to this day beat the entire game on the highest setting, without losing, probably most levels without even getting hit. I always picked the fat dude, in my mind he was the best lol, even though I later found out people claim the other two are better. Never bothered with the other two. So I remember at first, I used to play untill I could buy the jet that fires in two directions, and then for the last levels of the game, I'd switch to the jet with the upward special weapons (so no the last one). Later on, I would simply use the first jet untill I could afford the final jet, and play the last couple of levels with that awesome Efreet (I think it was called). Awesome game, great memories. Never knew there was a comic of this, and I'll probably go search for the anime, just cause I'm curious now. This game.. hardly anyone seems to know it even existed, it pretty much went under a lot of people's radar I guess (pun intended). But yeah, great review, I can totally relate to your enthousiasm, cause this really was a dope ass game.

Its such a different type of shooter and is one of a few that doesn't take place in space. Not too mention that theres a definite strategy for managing your money so you can upgrade your jet. So many great memories playing this game! I had no idea there was so much back story to this game.

Great video for an awesome game, Johnny!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this classic. I'd always figured there must have been a manga that this game was adapted from, due to the art style, but I've never read it or seen the TV series. It looks very cool and I'm sure I would have loved it if I'd ever seen it on store shelves in the UK. The game is especially cool on the SNES / Super Famicom thanks to the fact that you could choice the order of some of the levels. I never played the arcade version at that time though but was aware from magazine reviews that it was essentially an enhanced version of the arcade game, at least from a gameplay standpoint.
For me this game will always be a favourite as it came with my Super Famicom.
Back in 1991 I bought my machine second hand with ten games and one of those titles was Area 88. To this day it's one of the only Super Famicom games that I play every time the machine comes out of storage for a trip down nostalgia lane. I love it so much that I made a video about it recently too. I filmed it a few weeks ago and was planning to upload it last week but I've been having VPN problems and have been unable to access CZcams. After changing VPN companies I've finally been able to upload it today. It's not as interesting or informative as your video, as it's just me seeing how far I can get on one life, but it made for a good excuse to play it again and explain why I like it so much.
Keep up the great videos; you've been putting up so much more cool content recently. I've just noticed that you made one about favourite controllers last year so I'm going to watch that now.

Wow I never realised that U.N. Squadron had such a big history behind it.
I never bothered to research it, I just thought it was this pretty fun arcade shooter that I played on the SNES alone or with my friends. But hey thanks for the history lesson :P.
Your enthusiasm always rubs on me, love your show and now I'll gladly track down that OVA and the mangas. Thanks ;).

Like most shmups, it also has a pretty nice soundtrack! :) I guess you knew this though, having played the game! :p
      Try U.N. Squadron: Area 88 - Forest Stronghold ~ ROUND 3

Yeah I do agree they're pretty catchy. Though I don't like it as much as other games OSTs on the SNES. I don't think they used the best sample instruments available with the SNESs soundchip.

Hey Johnny! Have you ever played Paladins Quest on SNES? I'm sure you have but was wondering if you could talk about it on a future episode.
