- The little known story of how the actions of a small group of brave men and women may have changed the outcome of WW2
In the small village of Rom, in south west France, lie 30 Special Air Service men and one American pilot. In the weeks before the SAS commandos’ tragic end at the hands of Nazi murderers, the SS Panzer group, Das Reich had terrorised towns and villages, none more so than Oradour-sur-Glane, on their race north to reinforce the German army engaging the Allies on the beaches of Normandy. A journey that could have been made in three days took over two weeks, thanks to the selfless bravery and actions of the French Resistance, Jedburgh units and the SAS. Once Das Reich and other units entered the plains of the Loire region, the RAF and USAAF took over with aerial attacks. Had the 100,000 Nazi troops with their heavy weapons reached Normandy in the three days expected, the outcome could have been very different.

Excellently done Roy. I have an interest in WW1 & WW2 history so found it very interesting. I had read about Oradour-sur-Glane and the atrocity that took place, and credit to the French for keeping the village as a memorial to the victims. Thanks for taking the time to do the video.
I have visited Oradour-sur-Glane very sad place, a terrible crime. An excellent documentary, as good as the one I watch on the history channel.
Wow, what a story Roy and beautifully told in your video. Thank you.
Remarkable TV quality documentary Roy. Thank you. You have a gift for this.
Having visited Oradour I can testify to its uniqueness as a memorial to senseless waste of life. A must see place but not one to enjoy. Thanks Roy.
What a fine piece of work Roy. I'm in Canada and had never heard of this place. I'm kind of like you when I come across a historical site when bike riding or travelling by car--I like to learn about the history of the place.
Thanks! Yes, cycling for me is about the journey and not the speed of arrival 🙂
My Uncle Donald Mcphail Livingstone was a member of Operation Bulbasket.... he is at rest with his friends. Thanks for the very professional video Roy.
Thanks, Arthur. From the first time I entered that forest, many years ago, the place touched something within me. I was pleased to be able to return and share their heroic story. You will be rightly proud to have such an heroic uncle.
A very moving video, I know the stories you told well, I watch a lot history channels, especially ww2, Oradour-sur-Glane was a terrible terrible crime. Thank you for your video.
Very well told, Roy - a fine, moving but restrained piece of documentary-making. Ben MacIntyre's book SAS Rogue Heroes tells the story of Bulbasket too.
Interesting, moving and very well told. Thank you Roy.
ohhh dear!
'they' say: history should be remembered, so that the same thing won't happen again..... but alas, as you say "...but of course it has, and continues to...". by a strange quirk, the worst of human behaviours sometimes bring out the best in people.
but yes, a fitting tribute by the French, to leave that place as was, and not turn it into a 'Memorial Theme Park'....
thanks Roy.
Thank you Roy, very interesting. We’ll done. Phil B
Albeit, an extremely sad topic, it was superbly expressed by you Roy. Very informative and factually spot on. I've watched all of your videos, many times, as I enjoy them very much. This one in particular, was like watching a TV show, in it's quality. Thank you Roy. 👌
That’s very kind of you, Andy. I had a disaster with edit as I accidentally deleted the finished file, so lost three days work. As I had to start again from scratch, comments like yours demonstrate it was worth it 🙂
@@RideWithRoy oh that's a shame, as you obviously put a lot of work into your content. I don't want to sound like I'm just buttering you up 😂, but your videos are without doubt, my favourite. I look on CZcams regularly, and love it when my subscriptions have a red dot on your channel!! Keep on doing what you're doing Roy. Thanks again my friend. 👍
How sad - it’s important to remember the atrocities and remind ourselves how lucky we are.
Thank you Roy.
Really enjoyed this video and will look forward to finding out more.
I've sent the link to my Aunt. She's 76, her dad was in the SAS, and I'm sure that she will be very interested in your film.
Thanks, Andy. This type of story gains very few views, but as I’m not in this for views I will continue to tell them 🙂
@@RideWithRoy I understand, but we must NEVER forget these days, and the sacrifices that " ordinary people" as well as our armed forces, made to stand up to such awful fascists and bullies.
Had to wipe away a tear for this one.
Judging by what is happening here in Ukraine now, sadly the world is not learning
Ukraine was very much in my thoughts when making this.
