The news can make you really anxious, but you can learn to manage that anxiety. If doom scrolling is ruining your day or if the steady stream of bad news is getting you down, depressed, or overwhelmed, take a few minutes to learn how to manage anxiety about the news.
It’s been a rough weekend for Ukraine and the world. The news coming out of there is painful and scary to watch. And I know it’s affecting a lot of people. Over the weekend, one of my friends posted how the news was making her anxious, discouraged, overwhelmed, and I know that’s the experience for so many of you kind, sensitive people. It’s stressful to care, but even more than that, our brilliant brain believes we are in danger when we read about other people who are.
So in this video we’re going to talk about how your brain has a reptilian reaction to the news and this can mess up your life, and four ways you can actively manage your brain so that the news doesn’t make you depressed or overwhelmed with anxiety.
News anxiety doesn't haven't to control you. Learn to manage it in a healthy way.

The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

This is the one I'm struggling with, because so many things I stress about are 100% beyond my ability to do anything. And so stress is literally the only thing I can contribute to the situation, so if I stop stressing, then it feels like I'm less involved

I recently bumped into your channel and I strongly agree by the values you shared in all your videos. Thank you for equipping me, and us, the tools to fight anxiety and live the bestest years of our lives. God Bless you.

I have never really understood why when something bad happens in the world I have the tendency to prepare and worry as if it’s going to happen to my family and makes me feel like I’m in danger even when I’m really not. I really appreciate this video! It made me realize how much the news is actually affecting me.

I am also like this. I feel everyone's danger and sorrow as if it were my own. It can be a huge strength but we need to know when to protect ourselves. Some problems are not ours to solve, they're for the less vulnerable to deal with.

Thank you for this. The Russia Ukraine war triggered in me years of repressed anxiety and depression and I realized that watching the news is toxic to my mental health. I'm just old enough (I'm 49) to remember when all the national and world news we had access to were newpapers, radio, and a 30 minute TV news broadcast after the local news. I've blocked from myself all news websites, blocked all all-new cable stations, etc. These all-news channels intentionally put out there the scariest most sensationalist stories because they know it attracts vewiers and increases their profits. It's on us to wean ourselves from news addiction (like trying to quit a drug habit). It's not easy but for me, I'm working on it, to save my own mental health.

Thank you for posting this! Ever since I was 16 I started having horrifying dreams about nuclear war. Whenever the news brings war up I become very anxious and paranoid. Intentionally choosing where you put your energy is really helpful. We can’t control everything in life so choosing to put your energy in to the things we can control and the things that make us feel good is really important to living a happy and healthy life. I hope everybody has a beautiful day and everybody does something that makes them feel good today :)

Over the last 5ish years, I have read a lot of WWI, WWII era books ... historical fiction mostly, some non-fiction. It was interesting to me, especially in light of "now", how many of those time periods had confusion, disappointment, grief at humanity and a kind of "the world is going to hell in a handbasket" feeling. I think ... HOPE ... that as stated in the video, some of this currently is partly a bombardment of the "bad" info with less of the "good". I do know that for myself, when I feel overwhelmed by how "bad" people seem to be behaving ... when I focus on friends, family, community ... there is a LOT of good and also condemnation of the bad.

Great insights, Emma. I’d like to suggest you do a video on how media (news and social) are exploiting the fear/anger response of people everywhere. Not to call out specific parties (unless you want to) but just to know that fear of enemies is driving big profits for companies but is grinding down our collective mental health and destroying our ability to come together as a community.

Hello, Emma, I love your channel, so much I've learnt from it and I must agree with everything you say. I'm from Poland and unfortunately, our television is informing us about the war and war only. It's unbearable, esp for someone with anxiety problems. Social media isn't better either, I had to minimise my facebook visits to the bare minimum. Some catholics don't make things easier as welll, there are so much about the end of the world, prophecies, constant vigilance, fight, threat... it's just tiring. I agree with your perspective, it's about choices we make. We are not better people because we hear every news. Actually, I think it's other way round, we need to be better people and only then we can make the world a better place.

This is absolutely magical to me. I have been obsessively scanning the news from the minute I wake (this will be forever known as doom scrolling now, a very accurate term which I very much appreciate) I dread the mornings headlines as I fall asleep at night. Ruminating over the horror, fear, loss and trauma being suffered now during the Ukraine conflict and the life long effects it will cause for those involved, all day, every day.
I find it so hard to bear, I feel so helpless in my home in the centre of the UK, yet I check for new headlines multiple times a day.
I wanted to stop doing this as it causes me such difficult feelings and anxiety's but I felt to stop for my own benefit was selfish, turning my back because I can't cope with it when these poor people are actually living it! How utterly self centred.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me another perspective on this.
I will be taking your advice from today starting right now.
I feel like I can breathe again and focus on bringing back positivity to my life and of those around me.

We can choose not to watch the news and be discerning about where we find information. There are so many non-sensationalised places to inform ourselves and prevent overwhelm. Conflicts have always happened and they will continue to. The difference now is that there is so much of mis information via social media, the amgdala is being constantly activated. Overwhelm, ME, CFS are becoming the new pandemic. We can change all of this, together, by taking back our control, time and space, so e may digest things more reaonsably. Thank you so much Emma for putting this heart felt clip out today. As you say, informing ourselves and being rational about what we can do, really helps. My heart goes out to the people of Ukraine right now. Much love, Marie-Louise

I've been following the Ukraine crisis for a few months now, but the anxiety didn't hit me until mid-January and only got worse when the war began. A month ago I was a nervous wreck searching for every little detail, especially on Twitter/Reddit (the comments there don't help either). Nowadays, I mostly use a limited number of sources to stay informed. Doing this helped get me back into a more calm mindset about things and ultimately avoid doomscrolling.

  • @alfraedo304
    @alfraedo304 Před 2 lety +2

Thank you. I am looking into blocking certain sites on my phone to help stop me doom reading. I am in England and sad for others but mainly my fear is that this will escalate to become a war that directly physically puts me and my family here in danger. I happened to look at my phone late last night and saw that there was shelling and fire at a nuclear plant, with possibility it may explode and it was such a large plant that doomsayers were saying it could take out half of Europe and the fall-out even as far away as where I am, plus trigger nato to react which is unclear whether that could make things worse. I hardly slept from fear, then woke up to the news that the fire was out and the plant appears to be stable, so that problem (amongst all the others currently facing Ukraine and the wider world) at least seems to have been avoided.
My point is that if I had not CHOSEN to read it before bed, I would not have had such a rough night. Of course, my problem is anxiety, not the actual conflict itself and in my job I don’t do anything that can influence the problems happening in other countries…so in reality even if I woke up in the morning to a nuclear fall-out…knowing about the possibility of it the night before wouldn’t have been useful. It served no PURPOSE for me to be in a state on anxiety. To not be in that state, does not mean that I do not care about the news or the strangers who are in definite danger during the shelling, but I cannot help them, so what I think I have to work on is the separation of feelings of empathy for others (which is right and healthy) and the anxiety of being personally in danger from the actions of others (which is damaging my ability to function). People are upset here about the humanitarian crisis and afraid of the risks to wider Europe, plus most people have a firm opinion on which side they feel it is obvious we should place our support. We are also scared that our government could easily make a miscalculation, make a comment that is take the wrong way, that it could put our country in danger, alongside the moral feeling that we want our government to do all it can to make end the war quickly.
Looking at other wars, this conflict could go on a long time, and the threat of escalation or how close to it we actually are may never be clear. So reading about what may happen or seeing things that make us feel afraid does not help us in any way. So what can I do? I guess concentrate on my work, try to read fiction, try to carry on as normal and ignore the scary news. If we receive refugees in my city, that is the point where there may be something useful I can do through my work.
All I am able to do to prepare is get a grab-bag ready, have some cash bundles ready, some tinned food in the cupboards. If it came to it I cannot do much if war reaches my home, I am not physically able to put up much fight against anything, so really no prep would be adequate, but it has made me feel that I am at least getting prepared to cope with if it directly affects me in more minor ways.
We only get one life, spending it worrying about things that may or may not happen outside of our control is not a good use of it. Even watching a funny film is better use of our life than crying over the news…if we are not going to reacting to do anything productive, why get bogged down wasting our lives on it? Other thing is that if the very worst were to happen for our planet (and we all know what that would entail)…for me to have spent the weeks prior in a state of panic over the possibly of it would not have been the best way to live out the time that I have been given.
Thank you for this video. I had been getting my news from daily mail and Twitter, I am now rethinking that. I don’t necessarily think that the daily mail has the stories incorrect, but I have taken on board your point that they aim to play on our sense of fear with how they report it, and maybe we are right to be afraid…but that fear serves no useful purpose for me. So now I am going to push myself to only look at the BBC for my news.
So many times in my life anxiety has riddled through me, for various reasons, some of them for in comparison fairly minor things (a pet needing an operation, a risk of job loss), yet the fear is very real. Very rarely have the things I am afraid of come true, and even when they have, worrying in advance hasn’t taken much of the sting out of the harm of the situation.
I wish I knew how to stop my anxiety completely, but I don’t think that is possible. I do think that the current crisis in Europe is going to be ongoing for months or even years, so we have to fund ways to live with it without it destroying our mental health day to day. Following the horror of what is happening each day and consuming that isn’t going to quell anxiety only stoke it up.
It has seemed to be one thing after another for me, it is either a personal issue or something in the news, for the last few year I just go from one anxiety inducing thought to the next. It is horrible and probably a medical issue for me as much as a societal one. It’s interesting what you mentioned as I can remember the early 1990s before I had internet, before I had such easy access to constantly consume news, without that access, I was generally a lot less inclined to make the effort to consume it. The internet has played a massive part in my anxiety, for example any symptom myself, family or pets have…I am googling and reading the worst medial outcomes, making me worry about things that may or may not happen.
How we choose to consume the news and the internet, is a massive factor in dealing with anxiety related to the ‘what if’ problems. I liked what you said about thinking about why a particular website is presenting the stories in a particular way, because they want to tap into something in us that feeds off those feelings that make us feel the urge to continually check back to see updates, and we do that because it has made us afraid.
The crux of the question is that if I were to live as normal tomorrow, or if I were to die tomorrow, in either case, spending today caught up in a bad state of anxiety does not change tomorrow but also means that in my time in this one life I have, I am not using it in a way that makes me feel happy…when at this exact moment I am not in danger so why doesn’t my brain just want me to feel happy and enjoy this time right now?
It’s difficult. I will subscribe and watch your other videos, I think this is more use to me than the horrors I have been refreshing o news pages and Twitter this last week. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this. The only reason I've managed not to be overwhelmed by the situation in Ukraine is that I'm already overwhelmed by another crisis that's a lot smaller and closer to home. I appreciate the reminder that the lizard brain isn't always right when it tells me I'm in immediate danger, and that at some point spending a whole morning googling for information and advice isn't going to tell me anything I don't already know.

Thank you so much for this video! I've been on a News Stress roller coaster these past 2 years and can physically feel my head get dizzy, headaches, and nausea. I stay away....but a part of me is afraid to not watch any news. When we went into first lockdown....I had NO IDEA what was happening seeing people load up on toilet paper and water...until I got home and watched the news. I only had a few rolls left and 2 bars of soap. That night I paid on the Target app for soap, but no toilet paper left. Thank God I after going to Target I enough soap to hold me over till I found more....but no so much with toilet paper...I ended up just using wash cloths for 2 weeks. It scares me since to be left unaware.😔

Hi Emma, great video. Thank you for creating it just now as this teaching is so very important for us.
It seems to me that the way the news is presented is crucial for any capitalist system. It isn’t just the monetisation of the news by paid advertising but the entire news system.
When we are corralled into a sense of doom, gloom and uncertainty we are far more likely to go out and spend money one way or the other so as to make us feel better. That is how we have been conditioned.
It seems that the answer in general is to control our news intake and recognise that the way to solve feelings of insecurity is through acts of creative positivity rather than consumerism.

I seen the title of video and had to come comment. So! I actually completely stopped watching the news... why? Because it just causes unnecessary drama and anxiety for me. Anything that is important you'll always find out about thru social media, friends, etc. I haven't watched the news in about 15 years! I look at it as what is the point of watching it, there is nothing you can do anyways so your just putting unnecessary anxiety upon yourself. I would love to see a news channel that only shares positive, happy, or just stressless information for people that would like to be up to date on what's going on in the world with out feeling like it's the end of the world or overfilled with anxiety.

  • @theroadhome_Liz_Summers

"intentionally choose ... where we are going to focus our attention" (maybe paraphrase) ... this is one of my takeaways and it goes with a Bible verse that I love. I will only include the secular part: "whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think on these things." (For any who want the entire bit, it is Philippians 4). The other thing that very much resonates with me is the "put it in perspective" part ... GOSH!! For me, when things seem overwhelming, thinking about perspective or changing my perspective has been so helpful ... an "Ok, but what if" kind of thing. Bottomline, so much good stuff in this video and it was very helpful to me. Thank you!

Ive felt this way about the "news" all my life & have actively avoided watching, I'll read a weekly recap, occasionally. I recall the ugh feeling in my gut when CNN 1st came around with 24/7/365 news. My mother & sisters are very high strung people who have little to no control over their emotions. They react in a way I call the Chicken Little syndrome, "the sky is falling" reaction. I pray, meditate, and feed my soul positivity & avoid the news & the Chicken Littles as much as I possibly can.

Fun Story: In my state, newspaper agency decided to change the newspaper format. They Decided to write Positive good news in front page (thumbnail page ) and left breaking news to the next pages. The news agency went bankrupt within some years🙃. I think negativity sells.
And also I think, the day news telecast became 24×7,the quality decreased and quantity increased. They caught themselves in a rat race for public rating. Cant blame them because if they want to earn for livelihood they want more rating ,and so they need more eye balls glued to the tv,So they aired emotionally triggering news and changed their motto to "news first, fact check next".I hope whoever reading this a good day❤

I am actually in a slightly different situation - being in a country just some 1200 km away that is in actual danger of an invasion, I don't watch the news, but I notice I'm in even more stress than if I watched it constantly. I realized I am in actual process of creating trauma every day, so I started educating myself and I use some of your videos to try to process the trauma and emotions as it happens, not storing it inside.
The main real concerns that trouble me are: Russian invasion. Russian nuclear strike (Putin explicitly threatened it a few days ago!). Civil war, because in my country, it turns out, 10 years of hybrid war has caused 60% of people to APPROVE OF PUTIN EVEN TODAY, and literally defend his actions, I am not kidding.
Very interesting note is that my closest people, mostly fine, intelligent, educated people, weren't really depressed as they were in constant anger shortly before the war officially started. Pure rage. I am the same from time to time and, as it turns out from what i hear in your video, anger can be masking a deeper emotion, and you mention three - fear, guilt or disappointment. In our case, it's obvious it's the first and the latter. Fear, as I mentioned above, and disappointment because my own people are siding with Putin. Literally, just let that sink in. Pure disappointment and lack of trust in my society.
